HISTORICAL REVIEW OF sr MICHAELS RIDGE

The early history of st Michaels parish st

Michaels Ridge (North Ridge) dates back to the year

1844 when the first Catholic settlers moved into this

territory AIrong them was Michael Lutz who settled

in Sec 28 Adams Township Defiance County It was

on his donated land that the first Catholic Church

was built in 1861 Another Catholic settler was

Michael Schmidt who settled his family in what is now

Ridgeville Corners Many descendants still living

changed their name to Smith

It was in these two settlers homes that Holy

Mass was offered and the Sacraments administered In

these early years other emigrants arrived in this new

country which at that time was nothing more than a

dense and swampy wcxXs Many of the praninent pioneers

mostly of German and Irish origin were John Denair

Peter Lenhart Adam Peter and Nicholas Clemens John

Coressel Michael Schuetz (now Sheets) I Frank Scmners

David Westrick and Joseph Michael By 1861 we see

In 1840 Adams TOwnship had a population of 188

Priests saying Mass in private homes were Reverends

Andrev Herbstritt CPPS in 1854 Jacob Ringele

CPPS in 1855 Engelbert Ruf CPPS in 1855

Francis Westerholt from 1855-58 and Aloysius H

Hoeffel from 1858-1868

In the year 1861 because of the more numerous

and growing population the Rev Aloysius I Hoeffel

was appointed to st John I s catholic Church in Defiance

and directed also to look after the spiritual needs

of the faithful living in the region of the North Ridge

It was during that year that the original church a

30 ft by 50 ft frame structure was erected on a

one-acre plot of ground donated by Michael Lutz and

dedicated to st Michael the Archangel in remembrance

of the patron saint of the donor of the land An acre

of land at that time was worth $4000 but that amount

was considered a real sacrifice The organization

of the parish continued until completed in 1862

The little mission was attended to from nearby

parishes of Defiance Napoleon and Antwerp Rev George

Rudolph in 1868-1869 and Rev Christian Viere from

1869-1873 ministered to the people of the new parish

In 1873 the Rev Anthony Eilert assistant pastor

of St Johns Defiance built a small cottage and had

the honor of being the first resident pastor Many gt

Mekus relatives of Father Eilert are living in this

area today

It was during the pastorate of the the Rev J

Henry Huhlenbeck (1881-1886) that the church and the

pastor I s residence were enlarged Unfortunately the

pastors residence burned to the ground in 1886 The

first brick schoolhouse was built in 1882

The Mission of Mud Creek (Marysdale) was served

from NOrth Ridge from 1873 through 1888 st Michaels

Ridge was also known as North Ridge Rev G C

Schoeneman was pastor from 1886-1890 He acquired

another acre of land and built another parsonage He

reopened the school which had been closed to house

the pastor

The first parochial school was orgainized by Rev

T McCarthy in the Fall of 1877 using the church

gallery for that purpose

Pastors for the next three years were Rev W A

Panuska 1890 Rev W S Kress 1890 and Rev John W

middot Bell 1891-18921

In 1893 the Rev John Baptist Heiland was assigned

to the Ridge parish Although times were hard the

congregation made plans to build a new church as the

old church building was becoming too small Six acres

of land were acquired fran George Fronk in exchange

for a burial lot in the new cemetery that was to be

laid out on the new site The first person buried

in the new cemetery was Barbara Hoschak in 1897 Bodies

fran the old cemetery three miles away were transferred

to the new cemetery

A small barn was built on the new property by

Henry CUpp to be used as the contractors office and

for storage This barn was replaced in 1981

Ground was broken for the new church October 23

1901 John Wagner delivered the first load of bricks

fran Napoleon With the careful supervision of Father

Heiland the building and tower were under roof by

November 1902 Finally all inside work was completed

by st Michaels Day Sept 29 1903 when the Olurch

was dedicated The generous contributions of labor

and lOOney on the part of the 67 families left the parish

with only a small debt Evidence of this generosity

are the names of those donating the beautiful windows

Unfortunately Father Heiland was to enjoy the fruits

of his efforts for only a short time In 1905 after

a short illness he died and was buried in the church

cemetery which he laid out

For many years in the winter Mass was said in

the church basement which was heated by two stoves

Many rrornings George Fronk and Albert Fronk went early

to start fire in the stoves

The first Baptisms after the Church dedication

were Peter Leithhauser in October 1903 and Albert

Francis Mekus in December 1903

The first marriage in the new church was George

Hoschak and Carrie Fronk followed by Frank Mekus and

catherine Mose~ John Clemens and catherine Mekus

all in 1903

The first Funeral Mass was for Wesley Hoschak

age 22 and Frances Nagel age 9 1903

In 1905 Rev Albert Andlauer became pastor In

1911 a fine pastors residence next to the new church

was built and the school enlarged Lay teachers taught

the children until 1912 when the Sisters of Notre Dame

took charge Father Andlauer was the school superinshy

tendent and disciplinarian Many of the children living

a distance away came to school with horse and buggy

The horses were housed in a stable on the northeast

corner of the school lot carl Mekus rode horseback

After the death of Father Andlauer in 1916 the

Rev Gerhart Schmitz became pastor Among the first

baptised were Louie and Laura Fronk and Paul Wagner

A beautiful new combination school and hall was

erected on the original plot of ground which by this time

had been increased to five acres three of which were

i donated by Olarles Fronk General building superinshy

tendent was Frank Coressel Frank Sheets was in charge

of concrete and masonry Albert Si ler was in charge of

the slate roof Because of donated WOrk by church

members the total cost of the building was $2137107

The building was blessed by Bishop Stritch in

January of 1922

The old church building which in its lifetime had

been used for church services school hall for church

meetings and festivals meeting place of the Farmers

Institute and st Michael t s Land Bank etc was sold

at auction for $12500 It was dismantled by Justin

Coressel and Melvin Hall and taken to the Coressel farm

The next important improvements were a new convent

for the sisters and a janitors heme built by Frank

Coressel who charged 33cent per hour for his labor

On March 28 1920 a terrific cyclone swept through

the region doing considerable damage to the Church and

the comnunity The chimney fell through the church

roof The church had to be redecorated at the cost

of $260000 defrayed by funds raised by the WOlleI1S

societies

The people of the Ridge retrember Father Schmitz

for his quiet gently service especially to the sick

and to the youth He entertained the youth with

Irovies picnics tripsshowing the way with his starr

auto He encouraged sports He had the school hall

windows protected for the playing of basketball

In 1931 Rev Albert Bishop came to st Michaels

and under his leadership necessary income was genershy

ated even in those Depression years Some people will

recall the good times they had at the public dances

held in the school hall The cemetery roadway was

paved with a donation fran Herman J Rauth in 1933

thus relieving pallbearers fran carrying caskets to

the cemetery

Rev Sylvester Eisel was next to serve at st

Michaels (1936) Financial improvements continued

with a gOCld balance on hand for future repair work

He was especially remembered for his spiritual

guidance His death came suddenly on April 28 1951

Bishop Rehring celebrated the Requiem Mass with 92bull

priests attending Pallbearers Were Cletus Wagner

Rime Horrer Hulbert Leonard Cavanaugh and John

Westrick He is buried in St Michaelis cemetery

beside Fr Albert Andlauer Fr John Heiland and

Fr lawrence Heiland

Fran 1951 to 1963 St Michaels was served by

Rev Desrrond r-Dore as pastor He had varried interests

including community projects such as the Red Cross and

bowling hobbies of chalk-painting portraits and

collecting Many improvements were made including

the redecorating of the church rerrodeling the church

basement with kitchen and dining room new rest roans

new water supply with cisterns the addition of a

third classroom at the school and the gold leafing

of St Michaels statue in the front of the church

Fr r-Dore repainted the stations of the cross and

many of the statues Many of his paintings hang on

the walls of various rooms

In 1954 the school cafeteria was moved to the

church basement and operated by Agnes Kahle for l8~

years until the closing of the school in June 1978

In 1956 the Diocese issued Life Annuity contracts

with interest of 4 to be paid by st Michaels

Annual interest of $14000 is still being paid

In 1954 George A Fronk who owned land adjacent

to the church property desired to add more families

living close to the church He commissioned his

nephew Justin Ooressel to sell hamesites of his

property at a reasonable price to help accomplish

his purpose In 1955 Fronks First Addition was

dedicated Also 165 ft west of the old cemetery

was given to the church for cemetery purposes In

the next few years 18 new homes were built many of

them by Alfred Kahle and Son Builders

In 1960 Fronk f s Second Addition was dedicated

but abandoned a few years later because of zoning

The Lenhart family donated an easement of their

land opposile the church and rectory for better church

parking

In 1963 the Rev Herman Fortman becarre pastor

During his pastorate the front wooden doors of the

church were replaced with glass doors donated by

Mr and Mrs Frank Steffel The inner entrance doors

were also replaced donated by Mr and Mrs Frank

Lenhart

In keeping with the renewal of liturgy a new

altar facing the people was donated by Justin Wagner

The COImlUIlion rail ing was rerroved and COImlUIlion was

received standing The first Saturday evening masses

were offered

The changes in worship offered an opportunity

for many donations a new lectern by Justin Wagner

tabernacle by Agnes Kahle sanctuary carpet by Frank

Clemens sanctuary lamp by Ted Mekus gold chalice

with patten and intinction tray by Paul and Vivian

Wagner baptismal font by Clara Lenhart Easter

he Rev Edward Hug was appointed pastor in

1968 The first school board was formed with Eugene

Westrick as president He was followed by Don Keber

Bernard Ryan William Krueger and Fob Hulbert

Another classroom was completed in the northshy

west comer of the school basement he room that

served as the school library was canpleted and the

Northeastern School District used roans for kindershy

garten classes

Rev Henry Szteiter became pastor in June 1970

In 1970 a parish council was formed he first

president was Frl Breckler followed by Bernard Ryan

William Krueger David Westrick and now William

Burkhart in 1987

he church roof was replaced after the removal

of the five dormers on either side at the cost of

$1460000 The interior of the church was

redecorated

Rev Dennis Schroeders pastorate began in

1972 During 1973 sandblasting of the exterior of

the church was canpleted he large cross on the

church steeple was gold leafed as was the statue of

St Michael on the front of the tower A parish

pictorial directory was published

Ihrough the generosity of the Beck family a

new electric organ was installed on the left front

of the church but leaving the old pipe organ

standing in the choir loft

Bishop Jolm A Dgtnovan gave permission for lay

people to help distribute Holy Cbmmunion when necesshy

sary First such ministers were Richard Kahle James

Coressel Bernard Ryan Paul Wagner and Eugene Westrick

en January 4 1974 Rev Russell Gillig was

assigned as the pastor of st Michaels Ridge Three

more Eucharistic Ministers were canmissioned

Dennis Coressel Alfred Kahle and William Krueger

During this time Louise Keber repainted several

of the statues in church

With a gift of $800000 Donelda Mekus Arentz

pi suggested that the Church steeple be lighted and the

41 bells electrified She gave this as a memorial to I

bull~ her husband Joseph Arentz a nephew of Father Gerhardt

Schmitz

Our own permanent Deacon Eugene Westrick was

ordained May 22 1976

In 1978 st Michaels became a sister parish

with st John 1 s of Defiace who was served by Rev

Thanas Wehinger pastor and Rev George Wenzinger

as associate pastor

Sister Mary Lou DeBauche OSU was hired as

Pastoral Associate

The parish grade school was closed in June 1978

and replaced with the CCD program Members of the

last graduating class from the parish school were

David Kahle James Kunkle Gary Moser Lisa Schafer

Elizabeth Schlegel Rex Steffel Linda Westrick and

Lori Harris Lori Harris graduated from Defiance

College cum laude and broke many of the college

girls basketball individual records and was named

National Academic All American Athlete

he school building is now rented by the public

school system to teach Severely Behavior Handicapped

children of elementary grades It is also used for the

parish ceo program on Wednesday nights for early childshy

hood classes on SUnday nnrnings and for Bible School in

the slllllIrer

An endowment was formed from the bequest of Stella

Clarence and Carl Siler and Cletus and Rose Lenhart

Income from the Trust is a big help in making needed

capital improvements at St Michaels

he Rev James Say became pastor in July 1981

Rev John Fleck became associate pastor in July 1982

Rev Gerard Ruffing became associate pastor in July 1983

Rev David Kirk became associate pastor in July 1985

Sister Alice Pethe OSFT became pastoral

associate in July 1984

In 1986 a new parish directory was published

chaired by Linda Wagner

A $7000000 addition including elevator for the

disabled steps and entrance were added to the northshy

west part of the church

Certain families donated their tine and the cost of

each station

be Crucifixion group in the cemetery originally

donated by Albert Fronk was restructured with a gift

of $500000 from Marie Mekus Steffel in memory of her

husband Dr Victor Steffel She also donated cemetery

maintenance funds

Upon the suggestion of Robert Hath a unique

structure containing the cemetery map and directory

designed by Sally Siler was erected with funding by

Justin Ooressel in memory of his parents Frank and

Alma Ooressel

In July 1986 Rev Thomas Oedy became pastor The

church steeple is now being repaired and painted

In July 1987 Rev Paul Kokocinski became pastor

of St Michaels and st Marys Junction He will

continue to reside at st Marys Defiance be st Michaels school roof is being renovated

and the dormer windows and bell tower are being removed

Our organist is Sr Damien Morman OSFIT who

came here in April 1984 She is assisted occasionally

by Starla Hoschak trumpet Andy Batt trumpet Melanie

Newton Renee Newton CarnIen Wagner and cathy and

Melissa Farber

t Our organists date back to 1878 when Mrs Anna

i (Fronk) Bauer began playing the organ when she was

only 11 years old She had the honor of being named

the National catholic Mother of the Year in 1950

Nine of her 14 children joined the religious life

Mrs Bauer I s sister Mrs Valeria (Fronk) Miller

succeeded her as church organist Then Miss Rose

Fronk their cousin played regularly until her reshy

tirement after 50 years other organists were Joan

Westrick Kling Dave Moninger Debbie Westrick

Theresa Frank Dawn Wagner Mike Baxter and John BeckJr

Oloir members while Anna Bauer was organist were

st Michaels parish has been blessed with good

cooperation in faith and fellowship One evidence is

the St Michaels Parish Festival which has been an

annual event for 84 years Sane years as many as 1800

people enjoyed the chicken and ham dinners This years

The Altar and Rosary Society is one of the oldest

organizations in the parish having begun about 1902

followed by dinner dancing and entertainment

he Home and School Association had sponsored

coffee and rolls after Sunday Mass providing fellowshy

ship and extra funds for their projects This project

was assumed by the Parents for Religious (PRE) after

In January 1969 the Catholic Ladies of Columbia Council 199 was started with Agnes Kahle as first

president She was followed by Rosalie Harris

Sr Mary Lou DeBauche as the first moderator followed i

by Sr Alice Pethe The first president was Bernard

Wagner followed by fugene Westrick and Agnes Kahle

Parishioners are kept informed of activities and

other coocerns of the parish by a monthly newsletter -l which was edited by Connie Flory tmtil January 1986

when SUe Mekus becane the new editor The parishshy

st Michael IS is in a rural ccmnunity but only I a few of the parishioners are full-time fanners

In 1985 st Michael I s barber shop owned and

operated by Robert fYbser since 1963 was moved to his

fann residence

Because of the death of Joe Oravetz and the poor

health of his wife Ellie st Michaels store which

had been operated by them from 1949 to 1986 was

closed st Michaels store was built in 1921 by

George fYbser and operated by him for three years

- His son Clement operated it for a time then Frank

Moser Carl Ramus steve steffen and Joe Steffen

Prior to st Michaels Store the conmunity was

served by the Danerville Store and the Cupp Store

The Danerville Store was operated by Josh Dommer

John Kern D B Marckel and Olarles Clemens until

it closed in 1929 Both stores served as mail pJsts

before RFD in 1902 Mail was delivered to the stores

usually by horseback Henry Aschemeier had a hardware

store on the Ridge Road

Many parishioners have worked on Diocesan programs

through the years one of which is the Diocesan Develshy

opnent Fund that has had as Chainnen Paul Wagner

Bernard Ryan Dick Kahle and Eugene Westrick Mary

Beck has been the secretary

The Propagation of the Faith has been collected

here for many years Rose Fronk was Secretary for

many years until the current Secretary Marjorie Siler
