Introduction This demographic analysis of Saint Andrews, New Brunswick has been prepared to assist in municipal planning, but will also be a resource for residents to better understand their community. Demographic data has been drawn from multiple censuses, the most recent being 2016. In order to see trends, that data has been compared to historical census data as well as overall provincial population data. Unless otherwise specified, measures are describing Saint Andrews’ population in 2016.
3
1. Age and Sex The overall population (1,786 in 2016) has seen little change over the last 15 years, although it has decreased in the last 5 years. That population is ageing: since 1996 those aged 55-‐74 have increased while those aged 10-‐49 have decreased (with the exception of 20-‐24 year old men). The median age in 2016 was 52.8 – higher than the overall median age of the entire county and the province.

2. Housing and Family Structure Housing stock has diversified since 2006 when the only dwelling types were single detached homes and apartments. Singe detached homes still make up the majority of housing stock but between 2006-‐2016 semi-‐detached homes, row houses, and duplexes have been built. The average household size in 2016 was 2.1 and the average family size was 2.7 showing little change since 1996. In 2016 renters made up 27.04% of the population compared to 18.41% for Charlotte County and up from 23.42% in 2006 (data not available for 1996).

3. Language, Ethnicity, and Immigration Saint Andrews is an Anglophone community with little language diversity predominately populated by people of European ethnicity. Visible minorities made up 2.4% of the population in 2016, a decrease from 5.19% in 2006. Immigrants12 have also decreased as a proportion of the population from 10.42% in 1996 to 7.76% in 2016.

4. Income
In 2016 Saint Andrews had median individual and household incomes of $33,749 and $63,232 respectively. This is a steady increase from 1996 levels and above Charlotte County’s overall median income. The prevalence of low-‐income3 in 2016 was 6.9%, up from 5.3% in 2006. Given that this rate fell between 1996 and 2006 it is concerning to see it rise again, especially while the overall rate for Charlotte county has continued to drop. This sharp rise coupled with the increase in median income points to increasing economic inequality.
3 Income levels at which families or persons not in economic families spend 20 percentage points more than average of their after-‐tax income on food, shelter and clothing.

5. Employment Saint Andrews’ labour market has followed the trends of the county as a whole between 1996-‐2016. Participation4 (59.6%) and employment (53.1%) have fallen while unemployment (10.9%) has risen. Fewer Saint Andrews’ residents are working in Saint Andrews and more are working elsewhere in the county or province. Possibly because of this shift fewer people are commuting by carpool, bike, or foot and more are driving personal vehicles.
4 Share of working age (15-‐65) population currently working or actively looking for work.

6. Education Saint Andrews is a highly educated community. In 2016 69.62% of adults had a post-‐secondary degree compared to 47.4% for all of Charlotte County. Saint Andrews’ numbers are roughly the same as in 1996, but the number of degrees at bachelor level or above has increased.
9
7. Mobility
The number of people moving to Saint Andrews from other countries, other provinces/territories, other counties in New Brunswick, and other parts of Charlotte County has decreased. This is consistent with the numbers indicating a declining population.

8. Tourism The province of New Brunswick has seen growing shares of tourism and with the decline of manufacturing and resource based economic opportunities the province is aggressively pursuing tourism based economic development. This is good news for Saint Andrews which is already largely a tourism based economy. While specific measures are not available for Saint Andrews, the Fundy Shore region had 96,599 hotel room bookings in 2017, a 5% increase from 2016. In 2017 Kingsbrae Gardens had 32,949 visitors, an increase of 15% from 2016. Increases of this magnitude have been the trend since 20145. Last year USA Today ranked Saint Andrews the #1 Canadian destination for Americans6, which has certainly led to an increase in visitors from the United States. Saint Andrews is also a popular destination for visitors from other Maritime Provinces, Quebec, and Ontario.
