Demographic Transition
• Demographic Transition- a process of change in a society’s population
Stage 1
• Very high Crude Birth Rate (CBR)• Very high Crude Death Rate (CDR)• Very low Natural Increase Rate (NIR)–Most of human history was at this stage– Hunting and Gathering– No society remains in stage 1 today
Stage 2
• Still high CBR• Rapidly declining CDR• Very high NIR–MDCs 200 years ago• More technology and wealth
– LDCs 50 years ago• More penicillin, vaccines, insecticides
Stage 3
• Rapidly declining CBR• Moderately declining CDR• Moderate NIR–MDCs 100 years ago• Chose to have fewer children
Stage 4
• Very low CBR• Low, slightly increasing CDR• 0 or negative NIR–MDCs currently• Increased access to birth control, more
women working in labor force
