March 21, 2017 Dear Parishioners:

The gospel for the Third Sunday of Lent has a great story about the encounter of Jesus with the Samaritan woman at the well. The unusual element in the story as present-ed by John, shows Jesus talking to a Samaritan woman. This was not an acceptable behavior for the religious Jew. The Samaritans were religious outcasts and interaction with them was religiously prohibited. The Samaritan peo-ple were the descendants of those Jews who intermarried with the pagan gentiles during the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish community.

When the disciples of Jesus returned, they were amazed that Jesus was not following the cultural, social and reli-gious conventions of his day.

In reaching out through this encounter with the Samari-tan woman, Jesus brought her to faith. He accomplished this by going beyond the preconceived notions of his day. However, Jesus was fulfilling the mission given to him to evangelize people with the good news of the gospel.

The church and we as well have been empowered by dis-cipleship to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to people of our generation. In following the example set by Jesus Christ, we need to be flexible in our evangelistic outreach. By allowing Jesus to use us as his instruments, we can inspire people who do not believe as we do to accomplish good things.

In carrying out the challenge to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, the church needs to be flexible in its ministry and follow the example of Christ. Our Holy Father Pope Fran-cis recently announced that he will be going to Egypt to dialogue with the Christian and Muslim leaders of that country. He is following the example set by Jesus in ac-knowledging the goodness that exists in many people who are not in our church. The work of reconciliation among people of goodwill who are separated from each other is fulfilling the gospel of Jesus Christ. Reconciliation is the theme often expressed in the liturgy during the Lenten season. One of the challenges of Lent for us is to work to bring about reconciliation with those people in our families and among our friends who are estranged. Reconciliation in our communities and our country at this time is needed more than ever. Praying for this endeavor and doing what we can to bring this about is a fine Lenten goal.

Several stops are made along the route, where the Youth of the Parish reenact the Passion of Jesus and His Crucifixion. There will be a costume rehearsal on Saturday, April 8th at 9:30 in the church hall. We will also do a “walk-through” around the route of the Faith Walk, so that the “actors” will be comfortable with their parts. For more information, please contact: [email protected].

This weekend, the theme of the GIFT sessions will be, “Holy Week: Passion of Christ; Our Passion,” presented by Sr. Jewel Renna, CND. These are some questions you may want to re-flect on during your prayer time: 1. What is your passion? 2. Do you have family traditions for the Paschal Triduum? What are they? 3. What can you do to grow in your relationship with Jesus? 4. We believe that Jesus is both fully divine and fully human.

We also believe that Jesus rose from the dead. How do these beliefs impact your life?

Fourth Sunday of Lent

When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, he found him and said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" He answered and said, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" Jesus said to him, "You have seen him and the one speaking with you is he." He said, "I do believe, Lord," and he worshiped him. - Jn 9:35-38 Readings for the Week of March 26, 2017 Sunday: 1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a/Ps 23:1-6/Eph 5:8-14/Jn 9:1-41 or 9:1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38 Monday: Is 65:17-21/Ps 30:2, 4-6, 11-12a, 13b/Jn 4:43-54 Tuesday: Ez 47:1-9, 12/Ps 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9/Jn 5:1-16 Wednesday: Is 49:8-15/Ps 145:8-9, 13cd-15, 17-18/Jn 5:17-30 Thursday: Ex 32:7-14/Ps 106:19-23/Jn 5:31-47 Friday: Wis 2:1a, 12-22/Ps 34:17-21, 23/Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 Saturday: Jer 11:18-20/Ps 7:2-3, 9bc-12/Jn 7:40-53 Next Sunday: Ez 37:12-14/Ps 130:1-8/Rom 8:8-11/Jn 11:1-45 or 11:3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45

MEATLOAF COLLECTION April 8-9

The mission of the parish meatloaf ministry is to provide the House of Bread, a Hartford soup kitchen, with at least 12 baked and frozen meatloaves once a month throughout the year. The meatloaves, cooked and frozen at home, are then brought to the parish hall and placed in the freezer. Once they are all collected, a volunteer delivers them to
