A Message From Our Pastor

Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week

LISTEN - Talks - CATHOLIC LIFE Love Sacrifice Trust by Fr. Mike Schmitz

Labor Day weekend is celebrated throughout the coun-try with great fanfare, or at least with great happiness be-cause of the long weekend. This day, like many other civil holidays we celebrate, was started to honor an aspect of life in our country that we should not take for granted. The labor of many who have gone before us helped shape our nation into the great and prosperous nation that we enjoy. It was by their persistence in the fight to better our nation's economy, commerce, and even our standard of living that we are where we are. We are reaping what they sewed those many years ago. We also have them to thank for decent wages, working conditions, and benefits, such as vacation time and health care coverage. Let us not forget the hard work of our ancestor that has gotten us to where we are today, because in other parts of the world, people still lack decent work or fair wages, they toil in terrible working conditions, and they have no real voice in their economic life. We, in America, have much for which to be grateful. Make this Labor Day, and every day, a day to be thankful for our nation's growth. Let it also spur you to take up the mission to continue our nation's prosperity and its growth. The burden is now upon our shoulders to further the hard work of those who have gone before us and to help our nation to prosper into the decades and centuries to come. This task is imperative to accept so that our chil-dren and our children's children can reap the benefit of what we sew, and can then pass it on to their children and their children's children. May this Labor Day bless us with renewed vigor to work for the betterment and growth of our nation.

NEXT SUNDAY’S READINGS SEPTEMBER 9, 2018 3.

FIRST READING - Isaiah 35:4-7 Thus says the LORD: Say to those whose hearts are fright-ened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. The burn-ing sands will become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water.

SECOND READING - James 2:1-5

My brothers and sisters, show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. For if a man with gold rings and fine clothes comes into your assembly, and a poor person in shabby clothes also comes in, and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say, “Sit here, please, ” while you say to the poor one, “Stand there,” or “Sit at my feet, ” have you not made dis-

tinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil designs? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?

GOSPEL - Mark 7:31-37 Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” — And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was removed, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceed-ingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Key Scriptural Passage:

Welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. Be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. (James 1:21-22)

Questions for Discussion: Adult: Which words of Jesus provide the most inspiration for the Christian work that you do? Child: How do you welcome the words of Jesus into your heart?

Men’s prayer group...Starting Tuesday, Sept 4, we will begin our series “A Biblical Walk Through The Mass.” This is a fantastic series that explains a lot of what we do in the Mass and where you can find it’s origin in the Bible. Have you ever wondered: Why do we have Mass? Why do we make the sign of the cross? Why is the Mass a sac-rifice? How do we know that the Eucharist contains the Real Presence of Christ? Where in the Bible does it say that we need to have Communion every week? Come

Tuesday night to find out.

New Parking Lot Complete… We would also like to thank

Frank Marek Trucking for their part in the construction.

St. Philip the Apostle Bible Study…David the King

Please join us for Bishop Robert Barron’s newest study and experience how the whole New Testament opens up once we see it through the person of David. This seven week study begins the week of Sept. 10, 2018. All classes are held at the St. Philip’s Meeting House. Class options are Monday’s @ 10 am, Tuesdays @ 10 am, Tuesdays @ 6:30 pm, and Thursdays @ 9 am. All students will receive their materials for this study in their classroom on the first day of class. For more infor-mation contact Essie Leslie at 979/541-6262 or [email protected] David’s kingship recalls that of Adam in the Garden of Eden, and also foreshadows that of Jesus, the son of David. Adam was the first king and steward of the rightly ordered Garden of Eden. He was called to govern the garden ac-cording to God’s mind and purposes, yet he did not fulfill his kingly responsibility. After Adam, David emerged as the model king who would restore order in the Garden and bring the world under the lordship of God. Like Adam, David fell, and his reign began a succession of compro-mised kings and rejected prophets…until the coming of the King of kings and Lord of lords, Jesus Christ. Acts 13:22“After removing Saul, he made David their

king. He testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son

of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I

want him to do.‘”

Prayer for Catechists…O Word of God, help those who catechize to turn their faces to you, that they might know the Father and feel your redemptive love through the presence of the Holy Spirit. O Word of God, when the Father spoke, the world was created, life began, and love was brought into the world. Help catechists to count the blessings of the loving God in their midst, to be filled with your kindness, and to know the fruits of their labor. O Word of God, may the works of their hands and hearts prosper. Make them towers of strength that can withstand all of the buffeting winds encountered during this coming year. May they be beautiful in your eyes, a beacon of hope for all who seek to know you. Bless their labor, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Bring those whom they catechize to faith in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A prayer for Labor Day…Lord on this Labor Day, we thank you for the blessing of work. We ask for strength to complete each day. We ask for rest when we are weary. We ask for your guidance for everyone seeking employment, and we ask that You be with those whose faces we might never see but who work tirelessly each day for the good of us all. Amen.

Prayer for Catholic Schools...Lord, we pray that we will always remain open to the great gift of your Grace that shapes our vision and strengthens our will to create Catholic schools in which the Gospel’s message of love and hope is shared and nourished in our children every day. May our children continue to be blessed by their Catholic education, as they are challenged to academic excellence while learning the Catholic values that will help them develop faith, character, and a sense of moral leadership while growing in their love for you. Through the intercession of Mary and Joseph, the first teachers of your Son, Jesus Christ, we ask that you con-tinue to pour out your blessings on our Catholic Schools, so that they will always provide our students with a pro-found sense of service inspired by faith in you. Amen. By Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller
