Abortion creates a wound in post-abortive women, (and men) re-sulting in spiritual and emotional prob-lems. The Project Rachel ministry as-sists women and men who have been wounded by abortion to find truth and healing. There is a support group be-ginning in the Triangle area in August. If you have experienced an abortion and would like more information about the support group, contact Pro-ject Rachel at (919) 852-1021 or email [email protected]. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION As Independence Day draws near, we think of the men and women of the military who serve with courage and competence, some far from home. How does the Church accompany them? In 1939, Pope Pius XII created an independent jurisdiction of the Catholic Church called the "Military Vicariate." In 1985 Pope John Paul II created the "Archdiocese for Military Services, USA." Spanning the globe and serving nearly one and a half mil-lion Roman Catholics, more than one thousand priests minister in hospitals, on military bases of all the armed forc-es, on ships at sea, and on the battle-field. The AMS does not ordain priests, but accepts priests on loan from religious orders and dioceses. In 1824 a Jesuit priest named Adam Marshall enlisted in the Navy and died at sea in 1825. He was assigned as a "schoolmaster," but he sought out and ministered to Catholic sailors. Twenty years later, President Polk was worried that the war with Mexico was seen as anti-Catholic, so he recruited two Jesuit priests to serve in the army as chaplains. At the time of the Civil War, only about ten percent of Ameri-cans were Catholic. Military policies forced Catholic soldiers to attend Protestant services. The Church pro-tested this rule, and many priests vol-unteered to become chaplains. Their witness and the courage of the "Nuns of the Battlefield" (several orders of sisters who assisted Civil War victims) helped temper prejudice against Cath-olics and pave the way for the life and ministry of this vigorous and unique archdiocese. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Do You Have To Be Religious To Be Pro-life? From a scientific perspective, what fundamentally constitutes an organism as a certain type of “being” is its genet-ic structure. Trees have tree DNA. Dogs have canine DNA. And humans have human DNA. Humans receive their basic genetic structure at the moment of conception. Written into the single fertilized cell possessing 46 chromosomes is all the information that the human zygote will need to grow towards full develop-ment. No other extraneous genetic material will ever be needed. Science tells us, therefore, that from the mo-ment of conception we have a genet-ically living human being (and the "development" continues throughout life until death). This means that human life is to be respected and protected; it is not to be taken capriciously, especially from the innocent. You certainly don't have to be religious to understand the critical importance and dignity of human life. Even most atheists can agree to this basic idea. But let’s say that my Christian belief is the sole grounding for my opposition to abortion. Would this be so bad? Would I be “imposing” my beliefs on others to say that abortion is immoral? Think throughout the history of Amer-ica ---- many if not most of those who opposed slavery and championed hu-man rights were Christian believers who allowed their faith to guide their opposition to evil. Think of Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Lloyd Garri-son, and the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. Should their opposition to moral evil have been dismissed because of their religious beliefs? Of course not.

Goodbye from Fr. Alex Last weekend was my last weekend with you in the Parish. For me it will be a weekend tinged with sadness and joy-sadness to be leaving my Saint Mary family but joy at having shared & learned from you, and having en-joyed 4 years of my priestly life. When I came to Saint Mary 4 years ago, I was unsure of how I would set-tle in. Almost immediately the people of the parish set about making me feel at home – A home that I will never forget, a home where many are my brothers, sisters, and of course, my children; My dear Children, who will always be in my heart, the little ones as well as the big ones. I will never forget how much fun and how much I learned from all of you, whether in the classrooms, playgrounds, youth con-ventions, prayer nights, Sunday School classes, etc. Your kindness and friend-ship have been amazing and a credit to you all, children as well as adults. The path to priesthood is not an individual one. The community in which you develop is vital to your future ministry and I thank the people of this parish for giving me a sound footing. It is impossible to thank you all as much as I would wish to and to name you all would take weeks. Know that your kindness will be forever in my heart. For all the wonderful smiles, words, and cards, thank you so much, your generosity is much appreciated. The greatest gifts a person can take from a place are happy memories and I have them in abundance. Please pray for me and for the community of Saint Mary, as I embark on this new turn of the great journey of life and be assured of my prayers. And as I leave do not forget to pray and welcome Fr. Roch Drozdzik with the same warmth and generosity you shared with me. The peace of the Lord be always in your families, God Bless you!!!
