An Invitation from Presiding Bishop Curry to Turn and Pray on Behalf our Nation
As the season of Lent approaches, Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry invites Episcopalians and people of faith to turn and pray on behalf of our nation: “In times of great national concern and urgency, people of faith have returned to ancient practices of repentance, prayer and
fasting as ways of interceding with God on behalf of their nation and the world. This is such a moment for us in the United States.”
“On Ash Wednesday I will join with other Christian leaders observing this Lent as a season of prayer, fasting and repentance on behalf of our nation, with continued fasting each Wednesday until the Wednesday before Advent begins.” “Our appeal comes during a time of profound division and genuine crisis of national character. This is not a matter of party or partisanship, but of deep concern for the soul of America.”
“The group of religious “Elders” who share this commitment – the same group that over a year ago published the “Reclaiming Jesus” statement – includes Evangelical, Roman Catholic, mainline Protestant leaders. While we hold diverse political affiliations and positions on many issues facing our country, we find common ground in two shared convictions:
• First and foremost, we are committed to Jesus Christ as Lord, and his way of love as our primary loyalty.
• Second, because we love our country, we are concerned about its moral and spiritual health and well-being.”
“For me, this call is rooted in my personal commitment to practice Jesus’s Way of Love, by which I turn, learn, pray, worship, bless, go and rest in the way of our savior. Especially now, drawn together by love, hope and concern, and recalling the wisdom of our ancient traditions, I am grateful to join others in the spiritual practice of prayer, fasting and repentance for our nation. If you feel called to join us in this practice, the invitation is attached. The full text, together with the “Reclaiming Jesus” document can be found on the: Reclaiming Jesus website: www.reclaimingjesus.org

Let us pray. Almighty God … We humbly pray that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to do your will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in your Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to your law, we may show forth your praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in you to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Your brother, The Most Rev. Michael B. Curry

ANNUAL PLANT, BAKE AND RUMMAGE SALE The vestry is planning our annual plant and bake sale tentatively for Friday May 29 and Saturday, May 30. We sell a lot of plants if they are big enough to dig out of the ground at that time. What we need is an early spring. Greenhouses best seasons are at Mother’s Day and we would like to have plants at that time also, but they have hothouses and we do not. If you have plants that need thinning or you want dug up let me know and we will come to do the work. House plants also sell so if you have too many or it's time to separate them to fit into your pots better,
we can do that too. It isn't too early to think about these things, especially if that early spring happens and we move the date up. Another idea for the sale is to offer a sandwich plate from our parking lot. We are thinking pulled pork on a bun with a bag of pork to buy and take home. This will take some extra advertising so if ANYONE here can help with that part of it please let me know. The next part is the bake sale. We do well with our bake sales and anything goes. I have Deb Jenson's recipe for her orange cookies if anyone would like to practice them for our next Christmas cookie walk and sell them at the bake sale. As far as rummage goes it has been decided that the little stuff that doesn't sell well, such as cups, vases, toys, plates, clothes, knick-knacks, Christmas decorations, electronics etc. will not be included. We just have to box them up and take them somewhere else. If you have bigger items such as bicycles, furniture, golf clubs, or fishing equipment we will decide by item. It sounds harsh but we don't want to move things that don't sell multiple times. There will be more information as the time gets closer. ~ Linda Zamzow

Just a reminder that there will be a presentation about dementia and what it means to be dementia friendly on March 15th after church. The presenter will be Rob Griesel, Dementia Care Specialist from the Dodge County Aging and Disability Resource Center in Juneau. As more and more people age, dementia becomes more of an issue for families and friends of those with dementia. Come see how we might be able to help them feel more comfortable in their surroundings.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church
Vestry Meeting Minutes January 12, 2020
Members present: Chris Merrill, Erin Weirough, Jody Langfeldt, Linda Zamzow, Joann Ellis Also present: Ken Peters – Co-Jr. Warden, Jim Merrill – Sr. Warden, Fr. Rozo – Rector, Fred Ellis- Treasurer
1. Meeting called to order by Jim Merrill, Sr. Warden at 10:38 am. Linda Z gave the devotion. 2. Approval of December 15, 2019 meeting minutes – Corrections were: 1) Joann E was not present at the
meeting but was in the listed of those who were, 2) the Quik Books version currently in use is version 9 and we would be updating to 2020, and 3) Joann E did not make the motion to adjourn as she was not present at the meeting. That motion was made by Chris M. Motion by Linda Z and seconded by Chris M to approve the December 15, 2019 minutes. Motion carried.
3. Treasurer’s Report – Fred E gave the final Treasurer’s Report of 2019. He noted the profit from the Cookie Walk was not included in the Fundraiser amount, line 416. He also pointed out that the internet cost were higher, line 544.4, as we had to renew our domain. Motion by Joann E to accept the Treasurer’s report. Report accepted. Fred then moved on the draft 2020 budget. Most budgeted amounts remain the same from 2019 although there were some changes: 1) Line 417 was changed from “Flowers & Candles” to just “Flowers” since we have changed to refillable candles, 2) Fr. Oscar’s compensation will be increased 2.2% as per the Diocesan recommendation, 3) line 518 is the premium for Worker’s Compensation insurance, 4) there was a zero missing from the Miscellaneous (Snow/Lawn, line 519) 2019 budgeted amount, 5) the copier amount was left at $1900 although that area was underspent in 2019 as the current copier contract is up in April of 2020, 6) line 545.2 Software, was increased from $150 to $300 for the needed updates to some software, 7) line 546 Fundraiser Expenses was increased to $200 as that area was overspent, 8) line 563, Flowers, was decreased from $550 to $350 as Altar Guild members frequently use flowers from their gardens in the summer months, 9) line 564, Sanctuary Candles will be removed as have an electric Sanctuary candle, 10) line 568, Ads & Advertising was increase from $50 to $100 dollars as it was slightly overspent, and 11) line 572, Rector’s Continuing Education was decreased from $690 to $600 as frequently Fr. Oscar’s education is paid for or subsidized by the Diocese or National Church. Motion by Joann E and seconded to approve the 2020 draft budget for presentation to the congregation at the Annual Meeting. Motion carried. Fred did bring to our attention an issue that needs to be addressed regarding Fr. Oscar’s RSVP account, item 215 on the Balance Sheet. This is like a retirement account that Fr. Oscar puts money in for the future. The set up apparently took longer than expected and while the amount shows up on paper, we have not been putting the amount needed in Fr. Oscar’s compensation for the funds to actually be there. This is essentially money we owe to Fr. Oscar in the amount of $7985.01. Fred will talk to Fr. about the account number to transfer the money into so this can be corrected. Motion b y Joann E and seconded by Jim M to transfer $7380 from line 250.6, Columbarium Money Market, and $604.99 from line 259.9, Coffee Money, to the RSVP Account, line 215. Motion carried. The parish will continue to pay back the Columbarium Money Market the balance of the amount taken to purchase and construct the columbarium.
4. Old Business – a. St. Mark’s Rule of Life – Tabled. b. Quickbooks ( Techsoup) – Jim M reported he will be checking if other programs need updating
before updating QuickBooks. He is planning to take advantage of deals for non-profits to purchase this software.
c. Non-profit in Beaver Dam (flyer)/(website) – Jody got information to Fr. Oscar about La Clinica and Goodwill to add to the flyer.
d. Diocesan Baseball Card – This information was sent to Fr. Oscar. e. Compensation Resolutions – These were emailed and approved via email before 12/31/19. f. Annual Meeting – This is usually an expanded coffee hour provided by the Vestry members. It was
suggested we have a chili dump with corn bread, rolls, crackers and desserts. Committee reported
10
need to get to Sarah for inclusion in the packet. It was determined that the positions of Sr. Warden, Jr. Warden, 2 Vestry members (Erin and Chris’s terms are up), Convention delegates/alternates, and a Trustee will need to be voted on.
5. New Business – a. Issues from Rev. Oscar, Sr. Warden and others:
i. Rule of Life – Fr. Oscar received ideas from Vestry members regarding their ideas about a Rule of Life. This will be presented at the Annual Meeting.
ii. Diocesan Baseball Card – See Old Business item (d). iii. Plan Annual Meeting – See Old Business item (e).
b. Junior Ward and Committee Reports: i. Building and Grounds – Ken P. gave the Jr. Warden report.
1. Plan to convert fireplace – Will be getting estimates on converting Fireside Room fireplace from wood to gas.
2. Other – Normal small maintenance being done. ii. Other Committee Reports –
1. Stewardship – A reminder that the Friends and Family CPR/AED training is scheduled for next Sunday the 19th. Jody will contact Dodge County Aging and Disability Resource Center about providing a speaker for the presentation on dementia and dementia friendly businesses and organizations. This would replace the March presentation.
2. Liturgy – Joann reported that music and lyrics will be in weekly bulletins for a sung Lord’s Prayer. She will be getting ahold of the organ maintenance person about recording more of the hymns from the hymnal use on the occasions Barb Panzer is unable to be in attendance. She would like people to email her their favorite and least favorite hymns to be include in the Liturgy planning. She indicated Fr. Oscar is interested in comments about Messy Church.
3. 2020 Fundraiser Dates – Linda Z gave us the dates for the 2020 brat stands. Those dates are May 16th and June 15th. We will get a third date but can’t do that until after March 1st. A date was set for the Plant/Bake/? Rummage/Pulled Pork sale. It was agreed that May 30th would be the date.
c. Other New Business i. Angel 41 – The National Cathedral angel will be moved in the coming week to a new
location. ii. Pledge Envelops – We are not ordering pledge envelops for 2020 as so few people use
envelops. There are some left over which if people want they can use changing the numbers and dates.
iii. AED/CPR Protocol – These documents were email to Vestry members for their review. Due to the length of this meeting this will be discussed at a future meeting.
6. Fund Raising – Scrip profit for December 2019 is $211.58. 7. Next meeting – The next meeting will be determined after the Annual Meeting. Jody L volunteered to do
the devotion. Linda Z did the closing prayer. 8. Motion to Adjourn – Motion by Joanne to adjourn meeting. Meeting adjourned at 1:30 pm. Respectfully submitted, Jody Langfeldt, Clerk
