Letter from the Manse Dear Friends

Well, these last few months since I arrived in Aberdeen have been full and enjoyable. Thank you so much for the warmth and friendliness you have extended to David and myself.

We have settled down in your comfortable manse and other than approximately 5 boxes still to open (where do they all come from?) we are generally unpacked. Ministry wise, I am at the moment organising my week to include times specifically allocated to visiting. As I have calculated that it will take me 2 to 3 years to visit everyone in St Mark's then it wouldn't be wise to wait in! If I miss you don't worry I will pop back or you can ring me up to let me know a convenient time. If I arrive at the time of your favourite TV programme please feel free to say, " please pop back another time Diane" or just invite me in for a coffee and I'll watch too!

Please don't hesitate to let me know if someone is in hospital or needs a visit from me.

Easter celebrations of God's amazing love expressed so clearly on the Cross and through the Resurrection will soon be upon us. On a recent trip to Islay, I noticed the trail of churning water behind the ferry creating quite a pattern in the otherwise calm water; it all reminded me of the different responses of people to Jesus -

Adored and hated, admired and ridiculed, Loyalty and betrayal and in the end tears and critical laughter!

(Continued on page 4)

Page 4: St Mark's Messenger

4

How fortunate we are to know that, despite these responses, Jesus went willingly to the Cross for us. Over the last few months we have heard of dreadful suffering as lives have been devastated by the consequences of this restless earth and its inhabitants. It is through the lens of Easter we begin to see the role God has given us through His Church to be Christ's loving servants bringing His healing, support and loving touch wherever we can. Wherever you are and whatever you are doing this Easter may the love of our Risen Christ surround and encourage you. God Bless you. Diane

Summer Coffee Mornings The first Coffee Morning will be on Saturday 4th June and then each Saturday morning until the beginning of September. Please come along and bring your friends, your support is what makes these events a success and, as always, your donations of home baking and raffle prizes will be gratefully received.

The Strollers

The past session has seen the Strollers admiring snowdrops in the grounds of Crathes Castle and crocuses in the Duthie Park. Shortly we hope to view the daffodils along Riverside Drive. We hope to continue to enjoy more evidence of the beauty of God’s world and would be happy to have you join us on one or more of the following dates.

Margaret Donald 01224 591942

Did you know?

The earliest known reference I can find to Daffodils is in the 6th century A.D. writings of Prophet Mohammed.

The earliest reference I can find for the crocus is 2100 BC being grown in Egypt and Greece

The most common legend about the snowdrop is when Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden an angel transformed snowflakes into snowdrops as a sign of hope that spring will follow winter.

The Guild Of Friendship I am writing this as an ‘absentee’ from The Guild of Friendship being just out of hospital after my operation. Attendances have been very good (3 new ladies this year) and everyone seems to enjoy Monday afternoons. By the time this comes to print, our closing day will have taken place and the ladies will no doubt be looking forward to meeting up again in June for our usual High Tea.

Pat Skene 01224 642293

Projects Committee We will be holding an evening of ‘Jewellery, Handbags and Scarves’ on Wednesday 11th May, 7.30 in the Hall. The Garden Party will be held on Sunday 17th July, Alex has again agreed to host this event in his garden as Lynn and Colin are still busy with their new home in Orkney.

Although it was decided that the last Charity Shop was to be the LAST, we have had so much good bric-a-brac donated to the Church that we have decided to have the shop again. We have been allocated the week beginning 12th September.

If you have any good clothes and bric-a-brac please bring them along to the Church or ‘phone me at 575663.

St Mark’s Flower Rota

Have ‘you’ ever wondered about the flowers in Church?

On a Sunday morning the communion table always has a vase of beautiful flowers provided by a St Mark’s member. Following the service volunteers deliver the flowers to members of the congregation who are not able, for whatever reason, to be at the service. These flowers are very much appreciated by the people who receive them, often bringing a bit of cheer and sunshine into what can be a difficult time for them.

Oonagh, who organises the flower rota, is not well and in her absence we are making an appeal. There are 5 Sundays that have no one supplying the flowers and 17 Sundays that have no one to deliver the flowers. Flower Supply

April 17th, May 22nd, 18th September, 11th and 18th December Flower Delivery

19th and 26th June, 24th July, 7th and 28th August, 18th and 25th September, 11th and 18th December, 15th and 29th January 2012, 5th and 12th February, 4th March. We are asking if there is anyone in the congregation who would be willing to fill any of these spaces.

Please contact the magazine editor so that your names can be added to the magazine list and they will be passed on to Oonagh who does the amazing job of organising the rota.

A Note from the Treasurer “The Church is always asking for money”. Perhaps that’s something you have said yourself and, as Treasurer, I can agree that perhaps it does. In fact I started my piece in the last Messenger with these very words.

Why then am I using them again? If you were at our AGM on 20 March you will know. Last year the Congregational Account ended up with a surplus of £4,900, this year that is likely to turn into a deficit of about £9,000 unless our income improves.

During 2010 because we did not have a minister we benefited from certain savings, e.g. our contribution to 121 was reduced. However this year we must now pay the full amount plus inflation, VAT has increased and many of the day to day expenses we incur include VAT. The cost of utilities has also increased and whilst I always have an eye to savings on our expenditure I have little control over our income. That is in your hands as individual members of the congregation.

A small number of you have reviewed and increased your FWO or Standing Order during the year and for that I am extremely grateful. But what about the majority - the silent majority.

Being a member of the church is not about having to hear me “always asking for money”. It is about willingly supporting your fellow members simply by being there Sunday by Sunday and by making the offering you promised to make when you took your vows of church membership. These days if you cannot make it on a Sunday then you can give by Standing Order and your regular offering is secure.

The solution to our financial woes is in your hands. You simply put them together, bow your head and speak to God

O.A.K OAK has been busy since we started in January. The cafe has been busy in spite of the inclement weather, or perhaps because of the weather. We had a very successful Special Lunch at the end of February in aid of The Scottish Bible Society. The speaker came from Edinburgh and explained some of the work of The Bible Society. Our March evening service, in Crown Terrace Methodist Church, took the form of a Songs of Praise and was led by The Acclamations and Mr Alan Campbell. This was a very happy time and was well attended. Our thanks to everyone who helped to make all these events possible and run so smoothly. We look forward to Easter and our Communion Service and Afternoon Tea with the Circle of Care and some friends from the Methodist Church. We have another Special Lunch in aid of Erskine Hospital on 28th April and we look forward to seeing you all at some of our events. We wish all our customers and staff the Blessings of Easter.

The St Mark's Men's Club By the time this article is in print the Men’s club meetings will be over for another year. We have enjoyed the company of the ladies from the Guild at a number of meetings including the recent end of session meal. We have had a number of guest speakers talking on topics as far ranging as the work of the Street Pastors, a interesting talk about diabetes and recently “In deep water” a look at how machines can work at great depths in the world’s oceans helping in oil and gas exploration. On the games nights carpet bowls, darts and dominoes are enjoyed by the few dedicated men who attend, and they always enjoy the cup of tea or coffee at the end of the evening. If you would like to join us on a Monday evening starting from October we will be pleased to see you. For more information contact

Circle of Care The O.A.K Afternoon Tea was very successful last Easter and we hope that there will be as good a response this year not only from the members of St Mark’s Circle of Care but also from those of Crown Terrace Methodist Church who have been invited to come along both to the tea and to the celebration of Communion at 2pm in the hall. We are grateful to the staff of the O.A.K Cafe for catering for this event and also to the volunteer drivers who provide transport. A happy Easter to one and all.

The St Mark's Guild

Here we are at the end of another session, we hope members have enjoyed the varied programme. Unfortunately our joint Christmas Party on 6th December had to be cancelled because of the snow, but we started the new year with a belated joint Christmas Party on 17th January. The committee hope you all have a happy, sunny summer and look forward to seeing you all in October. If anyone would like to come along or would like more information please contact

Scottish Country Dancing

After the disruption of our classes at the end of the 2010 session, owing to the snow, we were glad to resume our 2011 session in January.

As we missed our Christmas Party in December we re-scheduled it to 26th January and had a Burn’s Night theme instead, much enjoyed by all.

Eight dancers then took part in the Church’s Burn’s Supper, dancing a reel called Tam O’Shanter. The feedback was very positive.

The classes have been well attended despite the long break. My thanks to everyone for their support especially Babs, Nora, June and Anne.

Our last class for the session will be 20th April, our party night.

Can Anyone Help?

Can anyone help shed light on when the Scottish Country Dance class began? What we know -

The former South Church (St Mark’s) Women’s Guild founded the Class to run on alternate Monday nights to The Guild. Students from the ‘Dumph’ Physical Training School led and attended as part of their training.

Mrs Lennox played the piano and Mrs Annie Wood provided the tea and the biscuits.

I have been a member for 46 years and took over ‘teaching’ when Mrs Winnie Low moved to Forfar in 1981/82.

I hope someone can help - Margaret Brown

The Sunday School Great fun was had by all at the recent joint service, where Queen Street and St Mark’s Sunday schools got together with Diane.

The chi ldren attended our ‘Special Agent Training School’ w h e r e t h e y learned how big

our God is and how he can do the impossible. We made special agent badges, deciphered Allan’s secret Bible code and tried hard to complete the ‘impossible’ tasks set by Diane. We had a reading from our special agent handbook, the Bible, and said a thank you prayer using wool! Young John did get rather tied up at that point. At the end of the morning we all graduated and received a certificate and a pair of special agent glasses.

We are looking forward to getting together again.

Our Cabaret 2010 was a great success with our audiences and the cast liked it as well. Special congratulations are due to our young Musical Director, Rachael Watson, who not only played piano for some of the songs but also appeared on stage as one of the solo performers.

We are now looking at plans for this year and have already fixed performance dates, such is the demand from other organisations for the use of the St Mark’s hall.

We begin the year with our traditional Spring Plays and Farmhouse Tea which are scheduled for 20th and 21st May. This year will probably see the production of a single Garry Watson authored play in two acts with the famous St Mark’s Farmhouse Tea at the interval. Further details will be available in the Pew Leaflet and on the St Mark’s website, www.stmarksaberdeen.org.uk.

Plans for our Christmas production are at a very early stage but we may be presenting something quite different this year. Again keep your eyes on the website and Pew Leaflet. The one thing we do know is that the performances will be on 24th, 25th and 26th November.

Our junior section, Stage Door, will tread the boards on 24th and 25th June for a show which is still at the planning stage but is sure to be another hit with our very supportive audiences. Although it is still too early to confirm it is likely that this production will also feature interval refreshments for the audience.

Once again further details will be available as they emerge on the website and in the Pew Leaflet.

Recently the ramblers have been on a couple of walks. On a cold Winter’s morning in January we walked around Kirkhill forest, and on Monday 7th March, after a bus run to Banchory, the sun was shining and we had a lovely walk up through the forest to Scolty. The following are walks planned through the summer and copies can be seen in Church hall and vestibule Come along and get fit and enjoy the fresh air. Phone Ian Lord for more information.

Taken From CrossReach Prayer Letter

As children bring their broken toys with tears for us to mend I brought my broken dreams to God because he was my friend But then instead of leaving Him in peace to work alone I hung around and tried to help with ways that were my own At last I snatched them back and cried “How could you be so slow?” “My child’ He said ‘What could I do?” “You never did let go”

Ian McIver - Parish Development and Outreach Worker

It is easy to feel overwhelmed when you look around at the sheer

scale of need in this world.

From Third World poverty to homelessness on the streets of Aberdeen, the challenges facing Christians are enormous. I’ve come to the conclusion that the best way to fill the well of human kindness is the ‘drip-drip’ approach. If we all do our little bit, the whole can be much greater than the sum of all its parts when it comes to loving our neighbours. Alpha Course leader Nicky Gumbel tells a story to illustrate how the smallest act of compassion or mercy can make a difference. A young man is walking along a beach when he notices an old man picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean. Approaching the old man, he asks, “What are you doing?” The old man replies, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out. The sun is shining. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.” The young man says, “Don’t you realise there are hundreds of miles of beach and thousands of starfish? You can’t make a difference!” After listening politely, the old man bends down, picks up another starfish, and throws it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the young man, he says. . .“I made a difference for that one.” Mother Theresa was feted wherever she went, but she often referred to herself as "nothing" or a "pencil" in the hands of the Lord. And as she told biographer Navin Chawla, "We are called upon not to be successful, but to be faithful.”

Page 27: St Mark's Messenger

27

It is a fact of life that the three churches that make up the Aberdeen City Centre Parish Grouping have ageing and gathered congregations. But if we have enough faithful people who are willing to play their part, large or small, age will be no barrier to making a difference locally, nationally and internationally.
