We’re trying something new in March. A cruise and cook out at the West End of the Jen-sen Beach causeway on March 30th. That’s a new destination for SLSC. There’s plenty of water to anchor for overnight and a nice picnic pavilion and BBQ grill at the park for the cook out.

Our annual Don Ellis Memorial Regatta takes place in the St. Lucie river on March 9th. For you ocean racers, we’re invited to join the Fort Pierce Yacht Club for their Spring Regatta the weekend of March 15 – 17th. See the flyer elsewhere in this Log. Details at the March meeting.

On February 16, 2019 we had the SWEETHEART’S REGATTA. This is another race where there must be a female helmsperson throughout the course. We had a good turnout along with great weather for sailing and it was just fabulous being out on the Saint Lucie River in the middle of February.

We had six cruising boats and two Sonar one designs come out which is the one of the highest number of boats to participate in years! The breeze blew from the Southwest at 10-13 kts. The two Sonars lead the fleet around the course and the cruising boats were spread out through out the course, though when the handicaps were applied the fleet were only minutes, or seconds apart.

Trophies were presented at the ‘After Race Party’ on the deck at the Deck Restaurant. The Finishers -

Sonar: 1st – ECHO with Terrie Silcox 1:10:20 2nd – PRIVATEER 1:10:54

Cruising J&M Fleet: 1st – SHOO FLY with Nancy Pickuet (E) 1:24:35 (C)1:01:03 2nd – WILD RICE with Asta Poirier (E) 1:23:44 (C)1:02:19 3rd – WHISPER with Barbara Jacobs (E) 1:15:40 (C)1:02:45 4th – LADY ANNE with Katherine, Barbara (E) 1:30:45 (C)1:04:34 & Laura Kay 5th – MY WEIGH with Laura Varga (E) 1:24:02 (C)1:06:48 6th – VOYAGER with Joanne Swann - DNF & Pat Eltz

February’s 12 Pack Race (2-2-19) had 6 participants.

The start line had light winds and an outgoing tide, but fortunately the winds picked up around the first mark.

Warlock started first and maintained a lead for the entire race.

Whisper started last but eventually overtook Freedom around the #5 mark headed to #1 for a second place finish.

What started off slow ended up being a great day to be on the water.

The weather this time of year is too nice not to be participating in club sailing activi-ties. The next 12 Pack Race is scheduled for March 2.

Order of Finish:

Warlock

Whisper

Freedom

The ‘Blessing’ was held on the North Fork of the St. Lucie River on February 9th. We were truly blessed this year with a beautiful day on the water. This year was the SLSC’s turn to be the lead club, so it was my privilege to serve as Commodore for the event. We were fortunate this year to have the participation of Frances Langford Evinrude’s former yacht, the Chanticleer with several members of the Evinrude family on board. Having her lead the parade provided a cool connection to the past when she served as the review boat for many years. They wrote us afterwards that being in the ‘Blessing’ again was a real treat for the family.

SLSC members George & Betty Treiber’s Manta 38 Cheshire Cat served as review boat this year. George & Betty and their crew were terrific hosts for the clergy. From left to right they were Deacon Frank Gluhosky, Father Scott Adams, Rev. Doug Jewett and Rev Carol Barron representing the Catholic, Baptist and Episcopal faiths respectively.

The participation this year was one of the best ever. There was a total of 130 boats from 10 different boating organizations, plus independent boaters. SLSC had 10 boats in the parade, most of whom proceeded up the river to Kitching Cove for a pot luck raft up after receiving their blessing. Judging from the pictures on the web site a good time was had by all.

It was a quite a positive experience to serve as Commodore for the ‘Blessing’ this year. I met a lot of wonderful people from the different clubs and being on the review boat was a blast. Next year it’s someone else’s turn!
