Commodore’s MessageDear Members,

I want to begin my letter by thanking Pat & Patty Leva for their generous and thoughtful contributions to improving our Youth Sailing Building. They provided the vision, the materials and manpower to improve the lavatory and refinish and epoxy coat the concrete floor. Pat’s business is E.G. Sackett Co. and specializes in installing floors in commercial buildings. The building has a fresh look and feel and we are very appreciative of this valuable gift to our Club. Please remember to thank the Leva’s when you see them next.

Only a few more weeks until our boats will begin to launch. This mostly mild winter has many of us chomping at the bit to begin our season early. So for just a few more months we must live vicariously through those who are off sailing in warmer climates. Marc Fischer, Bob Bryant and Chuck Bauerschmidt were invited to race J/22’s at the Cayman Islands Sailing Club’s International

Invitational Regatta and made us proud with a respectable 3rd place finish. Our RYC Team racers travelled to Texas Corinthian YC for our first invitational team race of the season and finished 4th of the 6 invited teams. A great start for the season Team Racers!

Vice Commodore Tom Kankoski and our Membership Committee have been developing and implementing ideas to generate membership growth and also continue to improve our member retention and involvement. Here are Tom’s program descriptors for our 2012 initiatives.

Member Recruitment Program - 75 invitations were sent to members who joined in the last 5 years with an offer to bring a prospective member to lunch or dinner. The prospective member meal will be reimbursed up to $75. Betsy or a flag officer will meet the prospective member and arrange for follow up. The premise is that new members are the best resource for recruiting new members. We will expand this program by sending out another 75 invitations in April.

Prospect List Development - we are exploring ways to raise local organizations’ awareness of RYC that could help us recruit new prospects, e.g. realtors, boating organizations, yacht brokers etc. The first step is to put together a RYC info package, which may include a brochure, DVD or link to a video and contact information. The next step is to look at hosting events for some of these organizations such as an open house to showcase the club. We will be soliciting members who are engaged in these organizations for assistance. Betsy, Kristina and I are working on this.

The Alumni Program - Donna Skelton is leading an effort to bring together members who have recently joined in the same year. We are trying to get these new members more fully integrated into the club through networking and participation in club events as a group.

LOA Reach Out - Betsy and I are looking at ways to reengage those members currently on LOA. We hope to get them to participate in some of the fun events coming up this spring/summer.

If you know a person that has expressed an interest in learning more about our Club, please contact Membership Director, Betsy Lawless. This is the season for growing our membership.

Susie and I hope to see you at the Club soon,Keith Burhans, Commodore

RYC Board of Directors Meeting - March 15, 2012 Commodore Burhans called the meeting to order at 1916 hours.

Treasurer Joe Altobelli reported on finances for the month of February. The club continues to operate under-budget for the year. We do have some large capital expenses on the horizon, but they have been budgeted for.

Club Manager Mary Smith reported that the “Pot of Gold” has been successful in bringing out more members to enjoy the club on Fridays. She attended a club managers’ conference and returned with many good ideas for our club to consider. Mary is exploring the possibility of offering a youth tennis program, Jane (well known to last year’s participants) will return to offer water aerobics, and yoga classes will continue through the summer. Mary talked about the numerous events coming up. (See details elsewhere in Log.)

Membership Committee Chair, Betsy Lawless reported that Kathryn Angelidis was elected to membership, and the board approved the following status changes:Posted for election:Caitlyn Angelidis (Resident), Proposer: Michael Ray, Seconder: Don Chesworth Status Changes:To Leave of Absence: Robert Reisch (Resident 08/04)To Resignation: John C. Fields (Leave of Absence 03/10)

Commodore Burhans announced that the Coast Guard Auxiliary would again offer a safety check on the two weekends before Memorial Day. The first team racing practice was held last Saturday. Sodus Bay YC will host centrals on July 13-14. We are pleased that Kathy Angelidis’ “Nobody’s Business” and Peter Pape will be back in the offshore fleet. The new TV monitor over the bar is great and the weather web cam is coming soon. The WIFI signal in the lockers is being boosted and is now registering properly.

Historical Committee chair, Betsy Lawless gave an update on the status of the model of the vessel “Ontario”. The Williamson-Pultneyville Historical Society has expressed an interest in displaying the model and would restore the ship and its case. A motion was passed to authorize the executive committee to negotiate the transfer of ownership of the “Ontario” model to the Williamson-Pultneyville Historical Society.

Jon Faudree reported that High School sailing starts Monday. The coach boats and 420s are tuned and ready. Thanks to Steve Wilde, Bud Webb, and Miles Bliss for putting in the float docks. Jon is also helping with adult sailing programs. All are set and details are on the website. Pat Leva donated new epoxy paint for the sailing center floor and the labor to install. He also put in a new bathroom. Many thanks to Pat for those donations! It is a huge improvement.

Junior Yacht Club -Natalie Steo announced that High School sailing has been merged into the RJYC organization. They have recently skied at Hunt Hollow and will be helping the Women’s Association with the Easter activities. Natalie reminded everyone about the upcoming gala for the Rochester Community Boating Foundation. The band is set and additional donations for the auction are welcome.

Major regattas on the schedule for this racing season: 2012 Great Lakes Invitational Match Race- Rick Sullivan 2012 Sonar North American Championship- Skip Shumway 2012 J-24 World Championship- Pete Cucci- Sponsors are lined up, 80 boats

expected, and possibly more, for 5 social events and meals each night.

Women’s Racing Association Linda Gardner noted that they have held the first fleet meeting and expect up to 25 women to participate. A rules clinic is scheduled on May 10th and the first race is on May 17th. May 14th starts the 5-week Monday night race clinic with Jon Faudree. They are arranging childcare so women with young children will be able to participate. Several regattas are planned including an event to “Sail With Your Significant Other” as crew.

Facilities -Bud Webb reported that the dock work is done and a new power system for the jib crane for launching has been installed. April 17 starts the official launch season but due to great spring weather we have a head start. A site security plan is in the works. Youth sailing program boats, coach boats and docks are done. Pat Leva provided material and crew to fix the sailing center bathroom and flooring. Thanks again, Pat, for the great job. Now we are adding some more amenities to the youth sailing building. The club will be re-doing the front entrance driveway, paving and site work now that we own the parcel. The committee is working on the capital plan for the kitchen and hot water systems. We have installed a makeup air system for the kitchen that is working and the HVAC in the dining room is better. Rear Commodore Hufsmith added that the $30,000 that had been allocated to purchase a new dishwasher turned into a major floor repair and a much bigger project so it will be postponed to next year’s budget for all of the required equipment and renovations.

Environmental Safety and Security- Rear Commodore Hufsmith reported that the name of the committee has been changed to address the current focus on environmental issues and compliance. We are seeking environmental engineers, chemists, or other members who may have expertise in this area to serve on the committee. Corresponding Secretary, Mike Ebertz read several notes received. Thank you from Max McCarthy for flying the flag at half-mast in memory of Elia McCarthy. Club Manager, Mary Smith thanked the board and the club for sending her and Christina Clabeaux to the club managers’ international conference and trade show. An invitation to RYC members to visit and enjoy the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, Maine. An announcement from the Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse that on May 17 they will host a guided walking tour of the port and would like to offer a walk-through and historical presentation at RYC. Betsy Lawless will facilitate.

Meeting adjourned at 2016 hours.

Respectfully submitted, Cheryl Evans, Recording Secretary

From the Manager’s OfficeDear Members,

I am starting my article this month with a BIG Thank You to Mr. Pat Bassett, who gave my office an extreme makeover. He donated his time, energy, and supplies to create a wonderful, fresh, bright & professional manager’s office. It now has a conference area in which I can meet with members and party prospects. Accolades and sincere appreciation go out to Pat for making this wonderful upgrade to our clubhouse.

This is the time of year that we usually anticipate warmer weather and spring flowers starting to break through the ground, and preparations for boat launching. With our unseasonably warm weather we have been able to get a head start. Groundskeeper, Gordy, along with maintenance, Steve, have worked together getting the grounds and the gardens cleaned up. Yardmaster, Miles Bliss is ready to launch boats, and the pool has been cleaned. Executive Chef George

Gremminger has created a new spring menu which you must come in and try; and Dock Master, Dick Olney, has been preparing his area for the new season too. The sneak preview of warm weather gave us all a lift from the winter blues. I hope the early spring means an early start to the boating season.

Easter kicks off April this year! Our Breakfast with the Easter Bunny and Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Women’s Association is on Saturday, April 7th. This is a family event and our 1,000-egg egg-hunt generally takes place outdoors. Sunday, April 8th is our Easter Sunday Brunch. We will be serving from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and will offer a wide array of spectacular food displays and ice sculptures prepared and presented by Chef George and his culinary team. Reservations are recommended. We will also offer dinner service with a special menu on Easter Sunday evening from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Our Successful Winter-Wednesdays series is coming to an end. On April 11th, Bay Creek Paddling will offer an educational seminar on Standup Paddleboarding. If you are interested in learning more about this sport, come and join us at 7:00 p.m.. Weather permitting this seminar will include a demonstration. April 18th John B. Adams will be here to talk about the Construction of the “St. Lawrence Seaway”. Please join us for dinner in the Grill room prior to the talk at 7:00 p.m.

As a reminder, on Thursday April 26th we are hosting a wine pairing dinner featuring St Supéry wines. St Supéry is a family-owned estate winery in the heart of Napa Valley, recognized for outstanding Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Meritage Elu and Virtu blends. Please join us for an evening of fun with friends, food, and wine.

We will conclude the month with a Family event on Sunday April 29th. Our “Bring Back Summer” party will include a Pasta Dinner, family BINGO, and of course, the ever favorite ice cream sundae bar. This will be an exciting gathering for kids of all ages. On this night we will also introduce all of our summer programs. In addition to Jr Sail and Learn to Swim we will be adding Tennis lessons and Water Baby class.

We will begin our new Yoga session on Tuesday, April 17. Be ready for an innovative and transformative experience with our next guest instructor, Jeff Young.

See you at the club,

Mary
