LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE

For previous letters go to stjuliana.org/letters

Dear Parishioners, The only thing Scripture tells us Jesus ever made, though he was a carpenter, was a "whip out of cords" (Jn 2:15). It's in our Gospel this Sunday: the scourging of the temple. It's amazing to think that this simple weapon could drive out the dozens and dozens of moneychangers, animals, and other traffickers. And though Jesus was a strong man (years of carpentry would have made him so), he was not that big and strong, such that he would in midate people. It wasn't as if Dwane "the Rock" Johnson were cleansing the temple. How was Jesus able to disperse all these sellers and animals, and avoid arrest by the temple police and Sadducees? Author Frank Sheed writes, "there must have been something in the personality they could not stand against, in the blaze of the eyes or the icy condem-na on in them; otherwise Jesus would have been beaten to the ground in the first few minutes, and the money-changing and the animal-selling would have gone on with hardly an interrup on."

This scene occurs in all the Gospels, but in John's Gospel, from which we read this weekend, the scene is at the beginning of Jesus' ministry, not towards the end as the synop cs have it. He leaves the wedding feast of Cana and proceeds immedi-ately to the temple to cleanse it. I wonder if the people for the next three years of our Lord's minis-try had this fiery image of Jesus in their minds. I

wonder if this was part of Jesus' allure. We all like people, I think, who show emo on and are passion-

ate about what they believe in. There is a reason Mike Ditka is s ll so popular in the eyes of Chicagoans. His temper showed he cared, and that was endearing.

Jesus is not all that different. He was passionate about cleansing the Temple. He is as passionate today about seeing you be his disci-ple and about seeing his parish, St. Juliana, thrive. Today, Sunday March 4th, is the Scout Pancake Breakfast in the morning, followed by a presenta on by Chicago radio legend Kevin Ma hews on his book Broken Mary at 3:30pm in the church. He will then join us for the 5pm Mass. Copies of the book will be available in the back of the church in the a ernoon.

The St. Juliana Parish Mission, led by Fr. Michael Moore of the St. Patrick Fathers, is this week as well. Fr. Moore will give his talk in the context of Mass, and there will be a Mass/talk at both 8:30am and 7pm. On Wednesday evening we will conclude with a penance service, which will serve as our Lenten Penance Service.

Tomorrow, Monday, I will talk with the Heartbreak to Healing group at 10am, and on Wednesday I will accompany the 8th graders again this year on their field trip to the Holocaust Museum.

We are excited for the individuals who are preparing to enter the Church in a few weeks: Daniel Dreger, Stephanie Garrigus, and Bob Nelson. Thank you to Father Laurent who has led RCIA with these candidates.

On Easter I plan to give a fuller descrip on of all that is happen-ing around the parish, but in the mean me let me provide a li le sampling. As I men oned last week, we have begun construc on on our new restroom facility in the back of the church. We are also in the process of ordering new carpet for the inside of the church. Fi-nancially, we are doing quite well. Take a look at a few items, com-paring ourselves to last year:

This is, of course, just a snapshot, and it is only midyear, but it goes to serve the point that we are moving in the right direc on here at St. Juliana. Addi onally, Mass a endance is up, school enrollment is healthy, the commi ees (School Board, Finance Council, Pastoral Council) are ac ve and strong, and we have created some great new programs (3 C’s in Christ, Teen Ministry, Hospitality Ministry, to name a few) to help people experience Jesus. Thank you for your con nued support. Yours in Christ, Fr. James

Mary's perpetual virginity is an ar cle of our faith. We Catholics believe that our Blessed Mother was a virgin before and a er the birth of Jesus. (The "brothers and sisters" of Jesus we hear about in the Gospels are, actually, his cousins or perhaps half-siblings.) Mary was given to no man so that she could be given to each of us. That is the significance of Mary's virginity. Another reason Mary's virginity is significant is because of its effect on marriage. Mary was truly married to Joseph, yet she remained a virgin. Mary thus adds a "virginal" component to marriage. She is a model for married couples. Husbands and wives obviously give themselves to each other in mately and physically in marriage, but they also should have a sense of virginity about them.

Virginity means openness or newness. If an adult going to Great America, for example, can act like it's his first me, the rides will be thrilling and the experience more rewarding.

This is because God creates out of nothing. "In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless wasteland, and darkness covered the abyss, while a mighty wind swept over the waters" (Gen 1:1). Just as the wind or the spirit swept over the barrenness, the Holy Spirit overshadowed the barren womb of Mary (cf. Lk 1:35). Infer lity, through God's grace, is frui ul. It's through a person's virginity that God can create and recreate. If spouses can maintain a spiritual virginity in their marriage, God will con nue to make their marriage frui ul. This is a dynamic of marriage that would not otherwise be present if Mary had not been a virgin. That is why we call her the Virgin Most Frui ul. Rev. James Wallace

TASSEL OF THE CLOAK

THE

CHRIST IN CHICAGO REFLECTIONS FROM ST. JULIANA PARISHIONERS

Always make me for God: A er our youngest of 6 children was born, I felt like I was going through the mo ons in my faith. Yes, we took all the kids to church every Sunday, but as I prayed for strength I also prayed for Mass to end quickly, as the kids were becoming more and more restless. Pointless right? Not exactly, for many reasons, but mostly because I DID take me for God.

One day a er church Father Phil invited me to a end Christ Renews His Parish, CRHP (a women’s retreat weekend). Yeah, right. What with all the kids’ ac vi es, their schoolwork, sports…how would I ever find the me? But I did need some “me” me; I did need some “God” me. Father Phil convinced me to a end the retreat and bring the baby. A er thinking about it, I decided to go and I took the baby. Not only did I get to know those with whom I shared the weekend, but I also got to know and see God again in my life. He was always there. I just didn’t recognize or pay a en on to Him.

As I made me for the weekend, the forma on process, sharing my witness on discipleship, and volunteering to work on the con nua on commi ee for CRHP for many years, I got to know Father Phil. He became my friend and mentor in life, suppor ng me in many ways. Through the CRHP program and with Father Phil’s assistance, I renewed the importance of God in my life.

I met with Father Phil for guidance a week or two before he died. At that me, Tom was applying to the deacon program. I learned so much from Father Phil. He was very reassuring, encouraging, and suppor ve. I never really had the opportunity to thank him for all he had given me: faith, inspira on, and courage. But the one thing I learned most importantly from him is to ALWAYS make me for God.

Marie Dombai is a lifelong St. Juliana Parishioner, having a ended St. Juliana School. She met her husband of 32 years, Tom, through the St. Juliana scou ng program and raised six beau ful children in the parish. All six children were bap zed and confirmed here and a ended St. Juliana school. Marie works as a nursing field supervisor.

YOUR WORSHIP AID SUNDAY

In the Book of Exodus, the Israelites have been liberated from the Egyp ans. They witnessed the wonders of God: the ten plagues, par ng of the Red Sea, being led by a pillar of cloud and fire, but they are unsure whether to rely on this God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. If they accept the covenant and live by God’s commands, they have the opportunity to live in a genuinely free and trustworthy society, centered around God. God desires to give His people everything, even the freedom to reject His offer. In the second reading, St. Paul writes to the people of Corinth, a cosmopolitan Greek seaport of the Roman Empire. It teemed with rival religious and philosophical movements, which endangered the faith of the early Chris an community. St. Paul, a er having been laughed out of Athens, approaches Corinth through preaching the death and Resurrec on of Jesus and focusing less on philosophical arguments. It is this tenement of our faith, the Paschal Mystery, that is the stumbling block of the wise and the learned. In the Gospel, Jesus directs the a en on of the religious elite and officiates to what is coming, i.e. His death and Resurrec on, but also that it will be by the faith of the Church gathered together, as the Mys cal Body of Christ, that the true worship of God will take place.

READING I: EXODUS 20:1-17

In those days, God delivered all these commandments: "I, the LORD, am your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me. You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflic ng punishment for their fathers'

CONFITEOR

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (strike breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth genera on; but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth genera on on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments.

"You shall not take the name of the LORD, your God, in vain. For the LORD will not leave unpunished the one who takes his name in vain.

"Remember to keep holy the sabbath day. Six days you may labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God. No work may be done then either by you, or your son or daughter, or your male or female slave, or your beast, or by the alien who lives with you. In six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them; but on the seventh day he rested. That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.

"Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you. You shall not kill. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male or female slave, nor his ox or ass, nor anything else that belongs to him."

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: 19:8, 9, 10, 11

“Lord, you have the words of everlas ng life.”

READING 2: 1 CORINTHIANS 1:22-25

Brothers and sisters: Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gen les, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

GOSPEL: JOHN 2:13-25

Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, "Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace." His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, "What sign can you show us for doing this?" Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up." The Jews said, "This temple has been under construc on for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?" But he was speaking about the temple of his body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

While he was in Jerusalem for the feast of Passover, many began to believe in his name when they saw the signs he was doing. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to tes fy about human nature. He himself understood it well.

SEASONAL PSALM: 91

"Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble, be with me, Lord, I pray."

CLOSING SONG

All will be well, And all will be well. All manner of things will be well.

“Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”

BAPTISMS

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION If your parish is reading from Year B of the Lec onary to-day, and not Year A, as is normally done when there are elect present for the scru nies and preparing for Easter bap sm, you hear about Jesus driving the money-changers from the temple. If you wished to get as close as possible to this site today, you would in fact be at a Muslim shrine, the Dome of the Rock, built on the ruins of Herod’s tem-ple. Archeologists believe that this striking, gold-domed crown of a shrine is set precisely where the Holy of Holies once was. Jews believe that the rock is the exact spot where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice Isaac. It is not a mosque, as some think, but a shrine, the oldest one in the Muslim world. For them, the rock is the place from which the Prophet Mohammed ascended on a visit to heaven. The Crusaders mistook the shrine for the actual Temple of Solomon, and the infamous Knights Templar used it as their headquarters and model for their churches else-where. The geometric perfec on of the shrine is a mathe-ma cian’s dream. The inscrip ons are not exactly hospita-ble though, since they encourage Chris ans to “depart from error” and declare that “Jesus son of Mary was only a messenger of God.” In ancient mes, those who prayed here a er walking around the rock were given a cer ficate en tling the bearer to admission to paradise. The cket had to be buried with them. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIESThank you for your interest in being a sponsor of the

St. Juliana Emerald City Gala. Our community includes

1,700 parishioners supported by a K-8 school that re-

cently earned the National Blue Ribbon for Excellence

in Education, a vibrant CCD program and an active

Alumni organization.

The main fundraising priority for the Emerald City Gala

is to build a STEM lab program for our students. STEM

offers an interdisciplinary approach to teach science,

technology, engineering and mathematics. Rather than

just teaching the four disciplines as separate and dis-

crete subjects, STEM integrates these disciplines into

a cohesive learning paradigm based on real-world ap-

plications. This is an essential component to our cur-

riculum because it will prepare our students for jobs of

the future. We would appreciate your support to help

us raise the $200,000 necessary to build a STEM lab

for our students.

Your contribution is tax deductible and one hundred

percent of proceeds will go toward much needed

capital improvement projects. Please contact us if

you would like to customize your sponsorship. Thank

you in advance for your consideration and support of

St. Juliana.

WORSHIP AID FOR CHILDREN

DEAR CHILDREN & PARENTS We are so happy you are here at Saint Juliana for Mass! We encourage you to sit up in the front pews so you can see what is happening. Also feel free to sit up in the balcony. Parents, don’t worry if you come in late or need to go to the back for a meout, and especially don’t worry if you make noise during the service. Your presence adds so much to our community. Children, feel free to use this page to color during Mass and take home with you. We hope your family experiences Jesus!
