The Most Holy Body & Blood of

Christ (Corpus Christi) June 18, 2017

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

“Brothers and sisters: The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because the loaf of bread is one we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf.” The simple questions St. Paul asked his Christian community at Corinth are directed to us on this great day for our Catholic community. The danger of

routinely approaching the altar and receiving the Eucharist is shaken as we read his important questions. People wait hours to catch a glimpse of a hero, a star or idol. Many thousands gather in St. Peter’s square weekly to see the Holy Father, hear his message and receive his blessing. But every time we meet for mass, Jesus is present in the gift of the Eucharist. He is present for adoration in the tabernacle, waiting for our praise and thanksgiving. Jesus is truly present in this sacrament for He wanted to remain with us, and this is the way He chose to be here. May we be reminded of this great gift of His presence as we enter our church. May we teach our children the need for respect and reverence as we celebrate each mass.

First Reading: Deuteronomy 8:2-3, 14b-16a Moses reminds the Israelites that when they were starving in the desert, the Lord fed them with “manna” -- a food not known to

them. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 10:16-17

Paul points out to the Corinthians that through the sharing of the cup and the breaking of the bread, they are all one in Christ

Jesus. Gospel: John 6:51-58

After Jesus feeds the five thousand people with barley loaves and fishes, he tries to make them understand the significance

and the meaning of what he has done. He tells them, in mysterious and beautiful words, that the bread he gives is his

flesh and says, “I myself am the living bread... If anyone eats this bread, he shall live forever.”

Welcome! New parishioners are asked to register by calling or visiting the parish office or by speaking to one of the parish staff. WHY A CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE A REGISTERED PARISHIONER The precepts of the Church explained that: we need to belong to a parish (your

parish is the Church in the City where you are domiciled) and to contribute to its support. Everyone should do this (Canon 107). To identify yourself with a worshipping community of faith. Salvation comes to us by God in community. Religion is not meant to be individualistic. Membership in a parish community is the norm. To allow the priest of the parish to know you so that Letters of Recommendation can be given when needed. (Sponsorship/certificates)

"The Eucharist is connected with the Passion. …To make sure that we do not forget, Jesus gave us the

Eucharist as a memorial of his love … When you look at the Crucifix, you understand how much Jesus loved you then, when you look at the Sacred Host you understand how much Jesus loves you now."
