SATURDAY AND SUNDAY CLOSED SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER OR SUNDAY OF DIVINE MERCY First Reading: Acts 2:42-47 In the early days of the Church in Jerusalem, the faithful listened intently to the teachings of the apostles. They lived a communal life, sharing all property in common and praying and taking their meals together. Second Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9 In this first letter from Peter, he speaks to the Christians with great joy and confidence, reminding them that through Christ’s resurrection, they have been given a new birth and are heirs to the kingdom of heaven. Gospel: John 20:19-31 After his resurrection, Jesus appears to his disciples and gives them the power to forgive sins. Thomas, who is absent, sees Christ later and believes in His resurrection after feeling His wounds. Christ admonishes Thomas by saying, “You became a believer because you saw Me. Blessed are they who have not seen and believed.”

THE DIVINE MERCY: FRUIT OF EASTER AND LENT
The Octave or Eighth Day of Easter is also known as “New Sunday” and the “birth of salvation” (St. Gregory of Nazianzen), “the compendium of mercy” (St. Augustine). And “the second perfection of Easter” (St. Thomas Aquinas). Then, on April 30, 2000, as he
canonized Blessed Faustina, John Paul II named the Second Sunday of Easter as “Divine Mercy Sunday.” The Pope explained that this day is “the Sunday of Thanksgiving for all goodness that God has shown us in the whole Easter of the Easter Mystery.” Jesus’ death and resurrection make it possible for him to breathe on the disciples and give them the Holy Spirit for the ministry of forgiveness of sins (cfvv 22-23), as Jesus promised in the farewell discourse at the first Holy Thursday (cfJn 16:7-11). God’s merciful and forgiving love through Jesus touches Thomas first, as if it were to assure us that no fault or failure is too great for God. Jesus is the King of Mercy by his cross and resurrection. The devotional image is that of the risen Jesus appearing before a closed door, showing the wounds of his crucifixion as he raises his right hand in the gesture of a blessing---as pictured in the Gospel. Risen from the dead, Jesus comes to his disciples gathered behind locked doors and greets them, “Peace be with you.” The Feast of Divine Mercy sums up Lent and Easter, proclaiming mercy as the perfect fruit of the whole paschal mystery of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection.

Welcome! New parishioners are asked to register by calling or visiting the parish office or by speaking to one of the parish staff. WHY A CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN SHOULD BE A REGISTERED PARISHIONER The precepts of the Church explained that: we need to belong to a parish (your
parish is the Church in the City where you are domiciled) and to contribute to its support. Everyone should do this (Canon 107). To identify yourself with a worshipping community of faith. Salvation comes to us by God in community. Religion is not meant to be individualistic. Membership in a parish community is the norm. To allow the priest of the parish to know you so that Letters of Recommendation can be given when needed. (Sponsorship/certificates)

SPIRITUAL ADOPTION Month 7 I CAN LOOK AROUND! Beginning this month the baby uses all four senses. His eyelids open and close, and the eyes look around. The baby can hear, taste, touch, cough, yawn and hiccup. He now recognizes his own mother’s voice. His grip is even stronger now than it will be after his birth. The hair on his head
is growing longer and the downy covering on the rest of his body is disappearing. During this time the baby will receive antibodies from his mother, providing him immunity to a wide variety of diseases. For info call Kathy Friel 973-398-8728

Divine Mercy Prayer
By St. Faustina Kowalska O greatly Merciful God, Infinite Goodness, today all makind calls out from the abyss
of its misery to Your mercy---to Your compassion, O God; and it is with its mighty voice of misery that it cries out.
Gracious God do not reject the prayer of this earth's exiles! O Lord, Goodness beyond our understanding,
Who are acquainted with our misery through and through, and know that by our own power
we cannot ascend to You, we implore You; anticipate us with Your Grace
and keep on increasing Your mercy in us, that we may faithfully do Your holy will all through our life and at death's hour.
Let the omnipotence of Your mercy shield us from the darts of our salvation's enemies,
that we may with confidence, as Your children await Your final coming
- that day known to You alone. And we expect to obtain everything promised us
by Jesus in spite of all our wretchedness. For Jesus is our Hope:
Through His merciful Heart as through an open gate we pass through to heaven.

LIVES OF THE SAINTS
April 24: St Fidelis Franciscan Capuchin martyr. He was born Mark Rey is Sigmaringen, Germany, in 1577. A practicing lawyer, he traveled across Europe as a tutor to aristocrats but then started defending the poor. In 1612, he became a Franciscan Capuchin monk, taking the name of Fidelis. Fidelis was stabbed to death in a church id Seewis. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XIV. Fidelis served also as the head of the Congregation for the Spreading of the Faith April 25: St. Mark St. Mark lived for years in Alexandria, where he died as a martyr while being dragged through the streets.Mark's Gospel was probably written between 60 and 70 A.D., and was based upon the teachings of St. Peter. It is believed Mark provided both Luke and Matthew with basic sources for their Gospel's.He was probably the first bishop of Alexandria, Egypt and the founder of the Church of Alexandria, although he is not mentioned in connection to the city by either Clement of Alexandria nor by Origen. St. Mark's symbol is a winged lion. This is believed to be derived from his description of St. John the Baptist, as "a voice of one crying out in the desert" (Mark 1:3). The wings come from Ezekiel's vision of four winged creatures as the evangelists .April 26: St. Aldo A native of Siena, and also known as Aude and Aldobrandesca, she gave away all her possessions on the death of her husband and devoted herself to aiding the poor. She spent the last part of her life ministering to the sick in the hospital at Siena, subjecting herself to great mortifications. She experienced visions and ecstasies during her lifetime. April 27: St. Zita St. Zita was born into a poor but holy Christian family. Zita herself always tried to do God's will obediently whenever it was pointed out to her by her mother. At the age of twelve Zita became a housekeeper in the house of a rich weaver in Lucca, Italy,. As things turned out, she stayed with that family for the last forty-eight years of her life She use to say: "a servant is not holy if she is not busy; lazy people of our position is fake holiness." At first, her employers were upset by her generous gifts of food to the poor, but in time, they were completely won over by her patience and goodness and she became a very close friend. Word spread rapidly in Lucca of her good deeds and the heavenly visions that appeared to her. She was sought out by the important people, and at her death in 1278 the people acclaimed her as a saint. She is the patroness of domestic workers. April 28: St. Peter Chanel, Priest and Martyr St. Peter Chanel was born in 1803 His intelligence and simple piety brought him to the attention of the local priest, Father Trompier, who saw to his elementary education. Entering the diocesan Seminary, Peter won the affection and the esteem of both students and professors. After his ordination he found himself in a rundown country parish and completely revitalized it in the three year span that he remained there. However, his mind was set on missionary work; so, in 1831, he joined the newly formed Society of Mary (Marists) which concentrated on missionary work at home and abroad. To his dismay, he was appointed to teach at the seminary at Belley and remained there for the next five years, diligently performing his duties. In 1836, the Society was given the New Hebrides in the Pacific as a field for evangelization, and the jubilant St. Peter was appointed Superior of a little band of missionaries sent to proclaim the Faith to its inhabitants. pagans and their king Niuliki who had only recently forbidden canabalism. However, the kings jealousy and fear were aroused when the missionaries learned the language and gained the people's confidence; he realized the adoption of the Christian Faith would lead to the abolition of some of the prerogatives he enjoyed as both highpriest and sovereign. Finally, when his own son expressed a desire to be baptized, the king's hatred erupted and he dispatched a group of his warriors to set upon the saintly head of the missionaries. Thus, on April28, 1841, three years after his arrival, St. Peter was seized and clubbed to death by those he had come to save. And his death brought his work to completion - within five months the entire island was converted to Christianity.
