The Saint Joseph’s women’s track and field squad returns34 letterwinners – including two individual and eight relayrecord-holders – for the 2015-16 season. With the addition of16 newcomers, first-year head coach Melody O’Reilly antici-pates strong indoor and outdoor seasons for the Hawks as theybegin their quest for high levels of success on both the A-10 andECAC levels.

“Coming off of the results from the fall and knowing whatthe crew is doing now, I can see why they’re confident in whatthey’re doing. I hope their confidence carries into the meets. Iwould love to see them pick up where they left off at the endof last year. That would be huge.”

CAPTAINS Senior long sprinter Jenna DeAngelo, senior hurdler/long

sprinter Dannah Hayward, senior sprinter Carly McGowan, andsenior distance runners Lauren Hehir and Sara Radzwilka willcaptain the Hawks this year.

All five racers have demonstrated a commitment and dedi-cation to the Saint Joseph’s women’s track and field programover the course of their first three years on Hawk Hill and haveall scored at the conference level between individual and relayevents, combining for 53 points. O’Reilly expects that takingthe program to the next level will begin with her five seniorcaptains.

SPRINTSSenior captain Carly McGowan will lead the short sprints

again this season. McGowan turned in a season-best 60m(8.34) at Jack Pyrah last season and owned four of SJU’s top sixtimes in the 200m, competing in the event at both the indoorand outdoor conference meets.

“Of our track captains, Carly is our strongest leader,” saidO’Reilly.

“She has taken a young group of athletes and has shownthem how to do the work,” added Meyers.

Junior Carly Montgomery set all four of her sprint PRs lastyear between the 60m (8.30), 100m (12.92), 200m (26.08), and300m (44.57) while sophomores Nia Dupiche (60m-500m),Alex Edger (60m-400m), Rose O’Brien (100m-300m), StephToland (300m), and Ariana Wilson will add to the short sprints.

“The sprinters are on board with the work, which hasincluded less volume and more intensity,” said O’Reilly.“They’ve been very receptive and look and feel stronger. There’s a really nice mix in that group, and they look great.”

LONG SPRINTSThe Hawks return two SJU record-holders in junior

Courtney Foster (indoor 400m) and senior captain DannahHayward (indoor 500m) to the long sprints this season.

Voted SJU’s Most Outstanding Performer as a sophomore,Foster led the Hawks in the indoor 200m (25.76), 300m (42.16),and 400m (56.48) and outdoor 100m (12.78), 200m (25.19),and 400m (56.49). Foster scored in the indoor 400m at A-10sand will once again be a main factor on SJU’s relays.

“Courtney is going to be very dangerous on the track thisyear,” said O’Reilly.

“She not a vocal person, but she knows what you wants todo,” added Meyers.

Hayward, who will also lead the Hawks in the hurdles, scored in the indoor 500m at A-10s and went on to place 13that the ECAC level in a season-best 1:14.99 last season.

second seasons as distance captains to lead the squad’s biggestevent group in 2015-16.

“The biggest group will be the middle distance group andwith this group, expansion is key,” said O’Reilly. “A lot of themhave gotten comfortable in their events, and I’d like to makesome moves in the distance events. I think we’re going to getto play around a bit this season and maybe find new places forpeople so that they can experience greater success than whatthey’ve had. I want them to open their horizons a bit.”

Radzwilka turned in SJU’s best 800m (2:16.28) and 1000m(2:59.15) while Hehir checked in with SJU’s best mile (4:56.08)and 1500m (4:34.83) last season. Both Hawks scored at the2015 A-10 Indoor Championships, with IC4A-qualifier Hehirplacing sixth in the mile and Radzwilka earning eighth in the800m.

“Julia really wants to compete in the steeplechase and isexcited about it,” said O’Reilly. “We have a group that reallywants to focus on steeple, so it could be very exciting.”

O’Reilly gave credit to the freshman class on the holisticimpact it will have on the distance group.

“The freshmen will have a huge impact on how these guystrain,” said O’Reilly. “It’s going to make that group interesting. We’ve adopted the idea of ‘racing’ and not ‘running,’ so now Ianticipate that mentality will carry through into the track sea-son.”

One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has beenflapping its wings for 59 years. The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in2005-06, is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughoutevery basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will NeverDie."

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks”since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the stu-dent body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” win-ning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typ-ified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aeri-al attack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontin-ued at SJU following the 1939 season.

SWEENEY FIELD

Sweeney Field, formerly known as Finnesey Field, has beenhome to 10 different varsity squads at Saint Joseph’s Universityin over 80 years of use. Opened in 1929 as home to the SJUfootball squad, the field has undergone numerous changesover the years and has been home to over 1,200 SJU varsitygames, matches and track meets. The pitch is the current homeof the varsity men’s and women’s track and field, soccer andlacrosse teams.

The field was renamed Sweeney Field in Fall 2013 uponcompletion of an extensive expansion project. The venue hassignificantly increased the seating capacity for SJU’s varsitylacrosse and soccer programs. The new name recognizes thecontributions of Sean S. Sweeney ’94 (MBA), a member of theUniversity’s Board of Trustees and the lead benefactor to therenovation project. Sweeney Field was blessed in conjunctionwith Hawktoberfest on October 12, 2013 while a formal dedi-cation was held on April 5, 2014.

The current expansion includes the addition of 1,200 per-manent seats to the hillside nearest to the University’s iconicBarbelin Hall as well as the addition of 1,100 portable seats onthe opposite side of the field, increasing total seating capacityto 3,000. In addition, the facility will includes a new state of theart press box and enhanced sound system.

Opened in 1929 and planned as the centerpiece to a70,000-seat football stadium, SJU was forced to eliminate thefield’s original grandstand and hillside seating in 1960 due tothe construction of Villiger (now Post) Hall/Bluett Theater.Since 1990, the field has undergone a number of upgrades andenhancements designed to expand usage and functionality, including installation of AstroTurf artificial surface prior to thecurrently TigerTurf surface, lights, and bleachers. Additionally, the track received a new coat of rubber material in 2009 to bet-ter suit the athletes who use it for all seasons.

Currently the home of SJU men’s and women’s varsity soc-cer and lacrosse teams, Sweeney Field has also served as the

home venue for Hawk baseball, field hockey, football and soft-ball, in addition to peripheral usage by the men’s and women’strack teams, along with countless club, intramural and recre-ational activities. Legend has it that a 1777 Revolutionary Warskirmish took place on the site.

Finnesey Field had been named after the late James T.Finnesey. A native of Wyncote, Pa., parishioner at the Gesuand president of a local auto manufacturer, he was a memberof SJU’s Foundation Committee, which was established in 1922to raise support for the College’s relocation to Philadelphia’sWynnefield neighborhood. Finnesey was a lead donor to thestadium project in 1927.

The Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer program was started in1958 and played every season but one (1960) at Sweeney. Thesquad has compiled an overall mark of 168-194-34 in 54 sea-sons at Hawk Hill, the most victories of any program onSweeney Field. SJU opened its playing grounds with a 6-0 victo-ry over Rutgers-South Jersey in October 24, 1958.

In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Sweeneya truly multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lightsfurthered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003on the hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of reno-vation to a historic stadium.

Baseball called Sweeney home from 1947 to 1959. The fieldhockey team played on Sweeney Field until 2007 and now prac-tices and hosts games on Ellen Ryan Field on the MaguireCampus. The location has also been home to women’s soccersince 1996 and the field hockey team wrapped up its last sea-son on Sweeney in 2007. The women’s lacrosse squad is 74-104in 21 seasons on Hawk Hill while the men’s lacrosse team hascompiled an overall 66-88 mark in 21 seasons on SweeneyField.

Overall, the site has seen 1,298 games entering the 2015-16academic year, and SJU teams put together a total record of589-650-59.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

2015-16 SAINT JOSEPH’S WOMEN’S TRACK AND FIELD MEDIA GUIDE 52

The Mackal Fieldhouse at the University of Rhode Island will once againserve as host to the 2016 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championshipsfrom February 20-21.

George Mason Stadium in Fairfax, Va. will once again be the site of the2016 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships from May 7-8.

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is nowthe Atlantic 10 Conference was conceived. Whatstarted as an eight-school, men’s basketball-onlyaffiliation has grown into a 14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as one ofthe best conferences in the country, and is cele-brating its 40thanniversary in 2015-16.

That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10 – DavidsonCollege, The University of Dayton, DuquesneUniversity, Fordham University, George MasonUniversity, The George Washington University, LaSalle University, University of Massachusetts,University of Rhode Island, University ofRichmond, St. Bonaventure University, SaintJoseph's University, Saint Louis University andVirginia Commonwealth University.

The Atlantic 10 was proactive in navigatingsweeping conference realignment over the lastfew years, adding Davidson College, GeorgeMason University and Virginia CommonwealthUniversity. The additions have proven successfulwith all three institutions winning regular seasonand tournament championships. The league con-tinues to draw national praise for its decisionsduring conference realignment in selecting strongacademic institutions with basketball-centric,robust athletic programs. The 14 member institu-tions of the A-10 are united and strengthened bytheir diversity. Each is extraordinary in its educa-tional mission, whether of a Catholic faith, a pri-vate university or a land grant institution. Thevaried pursuits of each member prove that thereare many threads that weave the fabric for agreat conference.

The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a total pop-ulation of over 76.5 million people within its geo-graphic footprint of eight states and the Districtof Columbia, will crown champions in 21 sportsthis year: baseball, men's and women's basket-ball, men's and women's cross country, fieldhockey, men's golf, women’s lacrosse, men's andwomen's indoor and outdoor track & field, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving,

men's and women's tennis, and women's volley-ball.

The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10institutions, in conjunction with Atlantic 10Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade, havemade a strong commitment to making the aca-demic and athletics equation a successful one.Over the years, the league membership hasstrived to better recognize the academic accom-plishments of its student-athletes. TheCommissioner's Honor Roll, which cites everyAtlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade pointaverage or better, recognized 3,029 student-ath-letes in 2014-15, a record for a 14-team A-10. Theleague sponsors Academic All-Conference teamsin each of its sports and honors two student-ath-letes as the A-10 Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides $70,000 inpostgraduate scholarships awards to 14 student-athletes, one from each campus.

The Atlantic 10 Conference annually earnshigh marks in the NCAA Academic metrics. Thisincludes graduating its student-athletes at an 89percent rate according to the NCAA’s most recentGraduation Success Rate (GSR) figures, five per-centage points higher than the national average. There were 90 A-10 teams with a perfect 1000GSR score in the NCAA’s 2014 most recent report. The league also had an average AcademicProgress Rate (APR) of 985 in 2015, seven pointshigher than the national average. A record 60teams were singled out for public recognition fortheir APR scores by the NCAA this past spring. There were 51 teams with a perfect APR score of1000 and another 71 teams that scored a 990 inthe 2015 report.

Success on the playing field has mirrored theA-10’s classroom prowess, with the league earn-ing NCAA postseason bids in each of its 21 sports, including two men’s soccer bids and 11 men’s andwomen’s basketball bids in 2014-15. Daytonwomen’s basketball made a run to the Elite Eight, challenging eventual national champion UConn inthe process, while VCU baseball advanced to the2015 NCAA Super Regionals.

THE JESUIT TRADITION OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCESaint Joseph’s nationally-recognized aca-
