TheHawkWillNeverDie!
Saint Joseph’s University
One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Saint Joseph's Hawk has beenflapping its wings for 55 years.
The Hawk, which celebrated its golden anniversary in 2005-06, is best known forstaying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game andrepresenting the Saint Joseph's motto, "The Hawk Will Never Die."
Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks”since 1929. At that time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the stu-dent body for a symbol. More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” win-ning out over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The name was appropriate because it typ-ified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive of the aerialattack which has made our football team famous.” Football, ironically, was discontinuedat SJU following the 1939 season.
The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It hasbeen selected as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, SportsIllustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook, ESPN College Basketball maga-zine and was nominated for the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2008.

time in saves (462) and fifth all-time in save percent-age (.510) and ground balls (126). The three-year goal-keeper currently holds the career (24) and single-sea-son (10) records for most wins.
Herlihy was named Atlantic 10 Defensive Player ofthe Year, the only player in program’s history toreceive the award, which she received in 2009 afterleading the league in goals against average (8.48) andsave percentage (.521).
Lindsey-Kate McCool is a 2008graduate of SJU and returns to theHawk staff for her third season in 2011.
McCool graduated from SaintJoseph’s as the all-time leader in
ground balls (151), tied for the all-time lead in gamesplayed (63), second in career assists (65) and fifth in all-time points (140).
Additionally, McCool led the team in assists all fouryears on Hawk Hill and was vital to the offense fromthe midfield position. She also provided excellentdefense, causing 56 turnovers, which ranks third all-time in the program’s history.
McCool completed her masters in criminal justicein 2010 at Saint Joseph’s and resides in Marlton, N.J.
Finnesey Field, currently in its82nd year, has been home to 10different varsity squads at SaintJoseph’s. Opened in 1929 ashome to the SJU football squad, the field has undergone numer-ous changes over the years andhas been home to over a thou-sand SJU varsity games, matchesand track meets.
The most recent upgradehappened in 2008 when theAstroTurf, laid down in 2001, wasreplaced with new, state-of-the-art TigerTurf.
Home to the men’s andwomen’s lacrosse teams, men’sand women’s soccer teams, thefield has seen other modificationssince its inception in 1929. Theprospect of a 70,000-seat bowledstadium for football was dashedwhen the sport was discontinuedfollowing the 1939 season.
Baseball re-occupied the space in 1947, calling Finneseyhome until 1959. Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer began in 1958 andplayed every season but one (1960) at Finnesey. In 1960, the orig-inal grandstand as well was the hillside seating near OverbrookAvenue were eliminated as Villiger (now Post) Hall and the BluettTheatre were built. In the process of the 1960 construction, thefield’s elevation was raised five feet to its current location.
In 1990, artificial turf replaced the grass, making Finnesey atrue multi-purpose facility. In 1994 the installation of lights fur-thered the use of the grounds, while new bleachers in 2003 onthe hill next to Mandeville Hall were another touch of renovationto a historic stadium.
The women’s lacrosse squad is 56-80 in 18 seasons on HawkHill. The best season came in 2004 when the Hawks went 5-2 enroute to an 8-6 campaign. The first game was played on March23, 1993 when SJU defeated Gwynedd Mercy, 18-4.
The men’s lacrosse team has compiled an overall 53-68 markin 18 seasons.
The location has also been home to men’s soccer since 1958and women’s soccer since 1996, while the field hockey teamwrapped up its last season on Finnesey in 2007.
Overall, the site has seen 1,129 games entering 2011, andSJU teams put together a total record of 518-564-47 in 81 years.

2010 REVIEW

TheHawkWillNeverDie!
Saint Joseph’s University
Misfortune and a plague of injuries marred the 2010 SaintJoseph’s women’s lacrosse season, ultimately giving the largefreshmen and sophomore classes ample opportunity to obtainvaluable experience.
The Hawks started the season out winning two out of theirfirst three games, including a 14-3 trouncing of Lafayette in theirseason opener and a 10-3 victory over Wagner. One of SJU’sbiggest offensive threats for the season, Meghan McDevitt, tal-lied six points in the two games, including four goals and an assistover Lafayette, before suffering a season-ending injury againstWagner.
SJU then fell to Delaware, a tough CAA competitor and hada two-point loss to Lehigh in which freshman goalkeeper AlishaAquilino played half the game injured making seven saves for theHawks before she also suffered a season-ending injury.
Midfielder Meghan Mitchell graciously stepped into the cageagainst Rutgers before senior goalkeeper Kaitlin LaBarbera, whohad been sidelined due to a pre-season injury, took over goal-keeping duties for the Hawks.
LaBarbera tallied 27 saves over the next three games as SJUfell to Monmouth in overtime, fifth-ranked Penn, and OldDominion before the Hawks entered conference play. LaBarberahad a career-high 10 saves against ODU as the squad played itsfirst game without key defender, captain Rae Wojnar, who wasalso sidelined for the remainder of the season due to injury.Wojnar had picked up six ground balls and caused eightturnovers in just eight games.
Although the Hawks had lost two key components ondefense and lost two offensive threats with the addition of KarlyKindbom two games later, SJU never lost its fight and the fresh-men stepped up to meet the challenge.
Sophomore Grace Dinn led the Hawks with four four-goalgames, totaling 22 goals as Saint Joseph’s lost five of its last sevengames by three points or less.
Dinn tallied five points in a 13-10 loss to Duquesne and thenscored three of SJU’s four straight goals in the last eight minutesas the Hawks fell one point shy, 13-12, in their comeback againstSt. Bonaventure.
Freshman Nora Mcguire stepped up with a goal and an assiston Alana Glanell’s game-tying goal to send the Hawks into over-time as SJU fell, 9-8, to La Salle. Mcguire added to the mix againwith three assists while Dinn scored four goals and Mary Elizabeth Klepper began adding to the scoring with two goals as
Saint Joseph’s dropped a two-point loss to George Washington.Senior Jenna Martino scored two goals on Senior Day as the
Hawks fell to Richmond (10-8, 6-1), the 2010 conference runner-up. Martino and Wojnar were honored for the successes in theirfour years on Hawk Hill.
Martino didn’t stop there as she and Dinn led the Hawkswith five points each in a 14-13 overtime thriller to the Atlantic10 Conference champion, Massachusetts. Martino and JenPeters scored two goals apiece to bring the Hawks back from athree-point deficit to take the lead before Massachusetts tied itup in the last two minutes to send the game to overtime.
Underdogs from the start, the Hawks never showed anysigns of nerves and never gave up the fight. The sophomore andfreshman classes gained valuable experience and were forced totake charge. Martino and four sophomores led the Hawks scor-ing while sophomores Elizabeth Fox and Alli MacDonald helddown the defensive end. With young talent and a plethora ofexperience, the Hawks should be a team to contend with in the2011 season.

Saint Joseph’s University
On March 2, 1975, the idea of what isnow the Atlantic 10 Conference was con-ceived. What started as an eight-school,men's basketball-only affiliation has growninto a 14-university, 21-sport league that isuniversally hailed as one of the best confer-ences in the country.
That growth and prominence is a directresult of the ideals and commitments of themember institutions of the Atlantic 10 - theUniversity of Dayton, Duquesne University,Fordham University, The George WashingtonUniversity, La Salle University, University ofMassachusetts, University of North Carolinaat Charlotte, University of Rhode Island,University of Richmond, St. BonaventureUniversity, Saint Joseph's University, SaintLouis University, Temple University, andXavier University.
The 14 member institutions of the A-10are united and strengthened by their diversi-ty. Each is extraordinary in its educationalmission, whether of a Catholic faith, a privateuniversity or a land grant institution. The var-ied pursuits of each member prove that thereare many threads that weave the fabric for agreat conference.
The presidents and chancellors ofAtlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction withAtlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V.McGlade, have made a strong commitmentto making the academic and athletics equa-tion a successful one. Over the years, theleague membership has strived to better rec-ognize the academic accomplishments of itsstudent-athletes. The Commissioner's HonorRoll, which cites every Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5 grade point average or bet-ter, recognized 1,162 student-athletes in theFall 2008 while 1,164 were named to theSpring 2009 Honor Roll.
The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports andhonors one student-athlete per sport as theA-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduatescholarship grants to qualified student-ath-letes. In 2000-09, 182 student-athletesearned Academic All-Conference recognition, while Charlotte's Lamarra Currie, ChristaDominick of La Salle, St. Bonaventure'sKatelyn Murray and David Zenk of George
Washington received postgraduate scholar-ship grants.
The Atlantic 10 Conference had 50 teamsamong the 767 Division I sports teams hon-ored by the NCAA with public recognitionawards for their latest multi-year AcademicProgress Rate scores. These teams postedmulti-year APR scores in the top 10 percent ofall squads in their respective sports. This rep-resents an increase of 16 teams from a yearago and ranked the league fifth among 31Division I Conferences. In 19 of the 21 sportssponsored by the Atlantic 10, the league'sAPR was at or above the conference averagenationally according to the most recent datareleased by the NCAA. Moreover, 75 A-10teams attained a perfect score in the NCAA'sGraduation Success Rate Report.
The Atlantic 10 Conference, with a totalpopulation of nearly 74 million people withinits geographic footprint of eight states andthe District of Columbia, will crown champi-ons in 21 sports this season: baseball, men'sand women's basketball, men's and women'scross country, field hockey, men's golf, women's lacrosse, men's and women'sindoor and outdoor track & field, women'srowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, and women's vol-leyball.
