BREAD AND WINE INTENTIONS The Bread and Wine for the week of
December 15, 2013 is offered for the honor and glory of God.
GIVE AND IT WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU Everything we have, everything we are comes from God. When we give back to God a small portion of the abundance he has given us, we not only show our gratitude to God in a tangible way, we also benefit from our own generosity. As Christ promised, “Give and it will be given to you.” (Luke 6: 38) If we give faithfully and regularly to God through his Church, we honor the Lord and allow his work to go forward. And we will, as Jesus himself promised, receive abundant blessings in return!

THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT, DECEMBER 15, 2013
ALL “GIVING TREE” GIFTS ARE NOW DUE
If you selected a gift tag from our Giving Tree, your wrapped gift must be placed under the tree TODAY, December 15. Any gifts that are still outstanding must be brought to the Rectory by Monday, December 16 in order for them to reach those in need in time for Christmas.
Make sure that you securely attach the tag you took to your gift.
Without it, our office staff and the agencies we are helping will not know for whom the gift is meant.
Thank you for remembering those who would otherwise be forgotten.
ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE The parish communal Advent Penance Service will take place on Monday, December 16 at 7:30 pm in the Upper Church.
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
DID YOU GET YOUR CALENDAR?
Saint Joseph Parish would like to gratefully acknowledge the donation of calendars by Boulevard Funeral Home and Beaugard Funeral Home. If your family did not take a calendar last week, there will be some available at the doors of the church this weekend.
The 6th Century Irish Penitentials, books of directions for confessors, contain lists of sins and the advisable penances for those who
committed them. In a recent study of these fascinating documents, Hugh Connolly noted the following themes: contrition (piercing the heart), confession (opening the heart), absolution (freeing the heart) and satisfaction (healing the heart). These themes offer a fine summary of how to celebrate the sacrament of Penance, something the Church urges us to do during Advent. Our Advent Penance service is this Monday evening at 7:30. After communal prayers, there will be individual confessions until everyone is heard. Besides our usual 4:00-5:00 pm Saturday confession time, our priests will also hear confessions in the main church after each weekday Mass from Thursday, December 19, through Monday, December 23, when pre-Christmas confessions will conclude. Here are two tools for making a good confession: an examination of conscience from one of the helpful flyers published by the Knights of Columbus and an Act of Contrition from the Rite of Penance. (You are also free to use an Act of Contrition you have memorized, or even to make up your own.) Have God and my pursuit of sanctity in Christ been
the goals of my life? Have I avoided the profane use of God’s name in my
speech? Have I honored Sundays by celebrating Mass,
avoiding unnecessary work and re-creating myself? Have I shown Christ-like respect to parents, spouse, and family members? Have I cared for the bodily health and safety of
myself and others? Have I been chaste in thought and word? Have I used
sex only within marriage and while open to procreating new life? Have I permitted sexual thoughts about someone to whom I am not married?
Have I stolen anything from another, from my employer, or from the government? If so, am I ready to repay it?
Have I spoken ill of any other person? Have I always told the truth?
Have I desired what belongs to other people? Have I been faithful to sacramental living
(Communion and Penance)? Have I helped make my parish community stronger
and holier? Have I done penance by abstaining and fasting on the
obligatory days? Have I been mindful of the poor?
(continued above)
Father of mercy, like the prodigal son, I return to You and say: “I have sinned against you and am no longer worthy to be called your son.” Christ Jesus, Savior of the world, I pray with the repentant thief to whom you promised Paradise: “Lord, remember me in your kingdom.” Holy Spirit, fountain of love, I call on you with trust: “Purify my heart, and help me to walk as a child of light.”
Msgr. David Hubba

ONLY THE BLESSED MOTHER IN MARY’S CHAPEL IS LEFT!
Generous donations have already been made to pay for the electric votive candle stands we plan to install in front of both the statue of Our Lady in the Harrison Street vestibule of the church and in front of the statue of Saint Joseph in the
sanctuary.
Made of wood to match the pews, the stands cost approximately $6,000 each. You can still donate that amount “in memory of” or “in the name of” a loved one for the votive candle stand planned for in front of the Blessed Mother in Mary’s Chapel.
CIRCLE JANUARY 12 ON YOUR CALENDAR —for “An Afternoon of Christmas Joy,” the annual Christmas concert of our Saint Joseph Music Ministry. Take the bright spirit and beautiful music of Christmas with you into the new year as we celebrate the official final day of the Christmas Season.

AN ADVENT REFLECTION Advent points us to the past, present, and future.
We remember the coming of Christ as the babe in Bethlehem.
We contemplate the coming of Christ into our lives today—in the
proclamation of the Gospel, the sharing of the Eucharist, the word of forgiveness, the fellowship of the Church.
We anticipate Christ’s coming again, when he will make all things new and judge the world in righteousness. We await his coming in power to share with us the great and promised feast. Longing for this day, we pray: “Stir up your power, O Lord, and come!”

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ
Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee
The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus.
The Gospel Reading for today is from
Saint Matthew 11: 2-11.
Today is the Third Sunday of Advent when we light
the third candle of the Advent Wreath.
It is a pink candle and it is known as
the Candle of Joy. It reminds us that
the Savior, Jesus Christ, will soon be
here and that we are to be joyful.
In today’s Gospel, John the Baptist asks one of
Jesus’ followers to find out if he is the one who is to
come or is there another? He was confused because
Jesus did not act like a King. He was not rich and he
served others instead of having them serve him.
Jesus showed that he is truly our Savior and King by
his works of healing, mercy, and kindness. John the
Baptist believed what Jesus showed him. He trusted
and loved God with his whole heart and inspired
people to follow God.
Jesus wants us to be like John the Baptist - to trust
and love God with our whole hearts. God doesn’t
care how many possessions we have, or whether we
are rich or live in a big house. He wants us to help
others and to share our possessions with those who
do not have what we have. By helping and sharing,
we become less selfish, and we ready ourselves for
the coming of Jesus.
MISSION OF THE WEEK
As a family,
do something for someone
who is struggling
during this Christmas season.
John the Baptist prepares the way for Jesus.
