PASTOR’S LETTER
Dear Parishioners, Over the past two weeks, we have celebrated two feasts dedicated to Mary. This past Saturday, we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption honoring when Mary was assumed, body and soul, into heaven. Mary, who was sinless from the moment of her conception shared in her Son’s victory over the powers of sin and death. This Saturday, we celebrate the feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mary is Queen of Heaven because she is the mother of the King, our Lord Jesus. As queen, all graces flow from her. We look to her as a shining example of love and she is the greatest intercessor on our behalf. We have so many gifts and blessings bestowed upon us. One of the greatest is the gift of Mary given to us by Jesus as He was about to die on the cross. Our renovation for the Church began last Monday. We hope that it is finished by the end of September. Just a reminder that during the renovation our daily Mass will be held in the hall. The schedule for the daily Mass is 6:45 a.m., 8:00 a.m., & 9:00 a.m. Our weekend Mass schedule will still be held in the Church with overflow in the parish hall. Our Eucharistic Adoration will also be held in the parish hall. Say a prayer that all goes according to plan and will be done smoothly. I want to share this article from The Word Among Us that I thought you would find of interest.
Do Not Fear
Sometimes our future weighs on us as well. We don’t know what’s in store for us. The only thing we know for certain is that someday we will die, but we don’t know how or when. We hope for success for ourselves and our families in our future, but who knows how it will turn out? How easy it can be to look at the future with fear! We worry about our health or our finances. We worry about our loved ones, especially our children and grandchildren. We might live each day expecting bad news, especially if we’re in the middle of a hard situation. We may even fear for the future of society or the Church. All this worry can cause us to live in a perpetual state of apprehension. It may lead us to overreact or make important decisions without first considering what God might say about them. God does not want us to live in fear! Early in his ministry, Jesus himself told us, “Do not worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will take care of itself” (Matthew 6:34). So how can we learn to entrust our future to the Father, as Jesus did? Clinging to God’s Promises. When we fear the future, it’s often because we have lost sight of God’s promises. Of course, he doesn’t promise a problem-free life. He also doesn’t promise to give us everything we ask for. But he has made some promises that tell us just how deeply his love for us flows—and we can cling to those promises. God promises to be with us always. The same God who walked with us through our past promises to remain with us “always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). Even when the future seems scary or uncertain, we know that God will be with us because he has given us his Holy Spirit to be our Comforter and our guide (John 14:19). He promises, “I will never forsake you or abandon you” (Hebrews 13:5).

(Continued - Do Not Fear, The Word Among Us)
God promises us the grace we need to deal with every situation. Sometimes our future looks different than we expected. We might have been thinking about a comfortable retirement, and instead we are facing a serious illness. Just when we thought our family was complete, another child comes along. We might be surprised by a job transfer to a new city. Whether our surprises are pleasant or painful, God’s answer remains the same: “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9). We can count on God to give us the help we need to face each new day, whatever it brings. God promises us eternal life in heaven. God’s promises are not just for this life, because our future is not limited to our years on earth. God loves us so much that he wants us to be with him forever. He promises that everyone who believes in Jesus will have eternal life (John 3:16). We have a Savior who is preparing a place for us in heaven (14:2). Eternal life with the Lord and with all the angels and saints is our ultimate future; it is the goal of our lives. As we ponder our future in this world and in the next, we can be sure that God is taking care of us at all times. As the psalmist says, “I trust in you, Lord. . . . My destiny is in your hands” (31:15-16). He is our faithful Father, always. So go ahead and place yourself - and your future—into his loving and trustworthy hands. (The Word Among Us) I would like to share with you an article that you may find of interest.
The COVID Crisis Has Turned Society Into a Tower of Babel By John Horvat II
A Civilization Without God Our society has become a giant Babel, and it is through that prism we might come to understand our predicament. We have created a civilization without God. It is a high-tech society in which we declare we do not need God. We produce everything we need to thrive. Our hyper-organized society has everything under control. God’s moral law is rejected and scorned. Every pleasure and unbridled passion can be satisfied in our decadent culture. The logical progression of a civilization without God is for us to declare ourselves gods. We can engineer our own bodies and change the nature of things. Indeed, this idea of becoming gods is the thesis of a bestselling book, “Homo Deus,” in which author Yuval Noah Harari claims we have conquered nature and will now try to turn ourselves into gods. Like those at Babel, there seemed to be no limits on what we might accomplish in our civilization without God. We have built a tower to heaven in the form of a technological utopia where we can reinvent ourselves and transcend our mortal contingencies. Confounding the Minds Enter the coronavirus. If there is one thing that characterizes the response to the crisis, it is confusion everywhere. There is no unity. Above all, there is no wisdom. Everyone disagrees with each other about everything connected to COVID-19 (even its name). A generalized confusion extends beyond the conservative and liberal divide. People cannot agree on the origins and nature of the virus, how it is transmitted, prevented, or treated. The first lockdown norms were based on the now-proven-false Imperial College London report that predicted the apocalypse. There are a thousand different opinions about the use of masks or social distancing. Families, communities, and businesses are divided.

SAINT JOSEPH PARISH WAKEFIELD MA
(Continued… The COVID Crisis Has Turned Society Into a Tower of Babel ~ By John Horvat II) Media spread fake news. Everyone is confused. Many distrust government statistics, guidelines, and the use of fear as a policy-enforcement tool. We squabble over treatments. Scattering and Shattering of the People In the panic of the outbreak, governments lock down everything. Businesses were closed and church worship was severely hamstrung or outright forbidden. Abortuaries, liquor stores, and marijuana dispensaries were allowed to continue as essential services. COVID is the magic word that opens up Ali Baba’s cave with trillions of dollars in economic aid and funding for liberal pet projects. Family life and social relationships are shattered, as grandparents cannot visit grandchildren, relatives avoid other relatives, neighbors isolated from all. The delightful personal contacts that once were part of our lives are now mediated via online media and cloth masks. Now racial protests erupt, violating all health norms, with the approval and frequent participation of officials that imposed stay-at-home orders on others. Riots, looting, and property destruction came next. No one knows the future as some say a vaccine will be ready soon, while others say that we might expect this to continue for years or that we will never be free of the virus. Confusion is the new normal. The political sphere is full of confusion and stalemate. The crisis is in the hands of governors and mayors who have arrogated to themselves arbitrary and extraordinary powers that many call dictatorial. States impose quarantines on other states. Mayors defy governors and make their own COVID laws. Sheriffs and law enforcement say they will not enforce COVID orders. Governors fight the president, other governors, their state’s legislatures, sheriffs, and mayors. All is chaos. Our tower reaching unto heaven – a civilization without God—might well be called Babel. Stop Building the Tower All this happened because we have turned away from God. Our civilization without God has produced not only great wealth but a society full of sin, disorder, and vice. Our unbridled passions are now calling for the end of all restraint. The accumulation of our iniquities has reached the point that it has overwhelmed the social structures that keep order. The coronavirus crisis is merely a catalyst that is bringing the system down. Having exiled God, the target is now the end of civilization. The only way to end the confusion is to stop building the tower. That means rejecting our culture based upon a civilization without God. Amid the hell we have created, we must realize that we must stop transgressing God’s law and return with singular resolve to God and His moral law. Our confounded minds will then unify and rest in the Lord God, our refuge and strength. (John Horvat II) I will be available for confession this week on Wednesday, August 19, from 2:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. and on Saturday, August 22, from 3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. in the chapel or any other time by appointment. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.
God love you, y

The Religious Education staff have been meeting to formulate plans for our Fall 2020 programs. We continue to monitor and review the archdiocesan guidance and look for innovative programs that are flexible enough to account for future changes. The focus of our faith formation model will continue to be on the parents as the primary educators of the faith for their children. Fr. Ron and his staff will continue to provide a community of faith and support for the work you do at home. We’ll be in touch via email with information and details as they become available. Saint Joseph School News
Saint Joseph School is currently enrolling for the 2020/2021 school year!
Saint Joseph School would like to introduce our new teacher, Mr. Douglas Shattuck. Mr. Shattuck will join us as our Science, Technology and Engineering teacher for Grades 4-8. He will also be our Grade 4 homeroom teacher. We are truly privileged to have Mr. Shattuck on our faculty. He has been teaching science, technology and engineering at Concord Middle School in Concord, MA for the last fifteen years, building on many years of engineering work in private industry. He also began his career in teaching and for many years served as a Chemistry teacher at Wakefield High School. For the last 8 years, while teaching in Concord, he has also been a Research Affiliate in Civil & Environmental Engineering at MIT. He has authored many publications and has been recognized many times, including with the Educator Excellence Award by the International Technology Engineering Education Association and Engineering Teacher of the Year by the Massachusetts Technology Education Collaborative. We are absolutely delighted to bring Doug's engaging teaching, impressive experience and exciting connections and opportunities to our students!
Introducing Our Newest Faculty Member
We are delighted to announce that Mr. Shattuck has organized a research collaboration between SJS and MIT for the 2020-21 school year! The collaboration will consist of two major activities: Participation in the Future City Competition sponsored by the Boston Society of Civil Engineers for grades 4 through 8; and Original research conducted by 7th and 8th graders as part of MIT’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering outreach.
The theme for both of activities this year will be Lunar Exploration and Habitation. Participation will be co-curricular and will include an in-class academic component and an after-school activity using the STE resources of SJS and MIT.
Future City – This year, teams from around New England will plan, design, and present a lunar habitat to a panel of engineers, architects, and scientists as part of a national competition. This activity includes construction of a scale model with at least one moving part, a computer simulation using SIM City, a written proposal, and an oral presentation. The program begins in September with final deliverables due in December and a presentation in January.
MIT Research – This activity is part of the Outreach of Prof. Buehler’s Lab. This year, we will evaluate and test simulated lunar soil as a building material for 3D printed dwellings. This is part of a NASA initiative and will include original research conducted throughout the school year. Preliminary research findings should be compiled in January and drafted in poster form to collaborators. A summary article will be submitted to Microscopy and Microanalysis in February and a formal presentation presented to the Lab in May. If accepted, the paper will be presented at the International Microscopy and Microanalysis Conference in Pittsburgh in August and published in September. Collaborators will include Prof Buehler, Dr. Kunal Kupwade-Patil of ICON buildings, and Mr. Vernon Robertson of JEOL, USA. 8th Grade students will be invited to continue their research as MIT student interns with graduate and undergraduate researchers during the summer.
