Dear Parishioners,
Over the past weeks, the Gospels asked “How are we living our lives?” The man who had a good harvest hoarded his blessings and did not share his bounty. He placed his security on his possessions and lived his life eating, drinking and being merry. He didn’t realize that his life was coming to an end. He did not live his life planning for eternity.
In another parable, we find the servants not doing their work for they were not expecting a quick return from a wedding by their master. When he did return, they got a severe beating. The servants who were ready were served a feast by their master. Am I attentive to my work as a follower of Jesus? Am I growing spiritually, sharing my gifts and talents and sharing the good news of our salvation?
The Summer Olympics have begun. The Olympic athletes are good examples of sacrifice, discipline, and hard work. They train hours a day, all in order to compete for a gold medal. They put to shame all of us who say we have no time to build up our spiritual life with the hope of winning the crown of eternal life. We find no time to pray, read the Scriptures or attend Sunday Mass. We forget that we are deciding our eternal life by how we live our lives today. Caring for our souls must be our priority. We must not allow this world to distract us from the basic purpose of why we exist, to be friends with God and to have a relationship with Him. Religion is not a bunch of laws, regulations and doctrine. They have their place but religion is how we nourish our relationship with God.
I encourage you to spend at least 10-15 minutes a day in prayer, praising God, asking for mercy for the times we were unloving, thanking Him for one’s blessings and asking for what you need. Read a little from the Bible and worship each week. Take advantage of any adult faith formation programs. Share your gifts and talents and serve the needs of others. Keep your eyes on Jesus and prepare for the eternal life awaiting you in the kingdom of heaven.
This Monday we celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. It is our belief that since Mary was immaculate from the moment of her conception, her body did not undergo decay but shares in the fullness of the redemption won for us by the death and resurrection of Jesus. She was assumed body and soul into heaven. For us our bodies will be reunited with our souls at the end of time. The Feast of the Assumption is a holy day but this year it is not one of obligation since it falls on a Monday (I’m still trying to figure this one out). You are still encouraged to attend morning Mass to celebrate this great feast of Mary.
I will be available for confessions this week on Tuesday, August 16, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs.
God love you,
3

Holy Year of Mercy December 8, 2015 to November 20, 2016
Immaculate Conception to Christ the King Please place this page on your refrigerator for this week’s reflection (Continuation from last week) Magnificat Magazine’s Year of Mercy Companion edition (pages 197-200) provides an understanding of indulgences for this Holy Year based on guidelines published by the
Vatican on its website. 4. “A plenary indulgence can be gained only once a day. In order to obtain it, the faithful must, in
addition to being in a state of grace: • Have the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin, even venial sin; • Have sacramentally confessed their sins; • Receive the Holy Eucharist (it is certainly better to receive it while participating in Holy
Mass, but for the indulgence only Holy Communion is required); • Pray for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff.
5. It is appropriate, but not necessary, that the sacramental confession and especially Holy Communion
and the prayer for the Pope’s intentions take place on the same day that the indulgenced work is
performed; but it is sufficient that these sacred rites and prayers be carried out within several days
(about twenty) before or after the indulgenced act. Prayer for the Pope’s intentions is left to the choice
of the faithful, but an “Our Father” and a “Hail Mary” are suggested. One sacramental confession
suffices for several plenary indulgences, but a separate Holy Communion and a separate prayer for the
Holy Father’s intentions are required for each plenary indulgence.”

SCHOOL NEWS
Saint Joseph School Alumni Team Volunteer Coordinator Needed!
Coordinator will work with our Saint Joseph School Alumni Team to develop an Alumni database. If interested in this position, please call Maureen Miller at the rectory at 781-245-5770.
Summer Vacation is an excellent opportunity to
increase faith and family activities. Here are a
few suggestions:
• Work on the kid’s religious education book in preparation for class in the fall. The grade level books are available in the rectory. Grade
level books can be handed down to siblings.
• Pray the Rosary daily as a family. Here is a link to “How to Pray the Rosary:” http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-
and-devotions/rosaries/how-to-pray-the-
rosary.cfm
• Attend daily Mass at St. Joseph at 9:00 AM and ask your friends to join you. From here you can
go for coffee, visit a playground, etc.
• Begin a family Scripture night and take turns reading from the Bible as a family and discuss
what you have learned.
• Unplug and take a hike in the woods. Let the peace and tranquility of this natural setting
bring you closer as a family.
So remember, don’t take a vacation from Jesus this
summer! There are lots of options! Have a safe
and blessed summer.

Novena to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
O Most Blessed Mother, heart of love, heart of mercy, ever listening, caring, consoling, hear our prayer. As your children, we implore your intercession with Jesus your Son. Receive with understanding and compassion the petitions we place before you today, especially ...(special intention). We are comforted in knowing your heart is ever open to those who ask for your prayer. We trust to your gentle care and intercession, those whom we love and who are sick or lonely or hurting. Help all of us, Holy Mother, to bear our burdens in this life until we may share eternal life and peace with God forever. Amen.
