Lots of news as we begin this Fourth Week of Advent:

2022 Calendars – Calendars, provided by our local funeral homes that regularly have funerals here, are available after Masses again this weekend. It’s our hope that you’ll find a style that you like and please join me in offering “thanks” to these generous providers for their gift to our parish!

Christmas Mass Schedule – I hope that you’ve had a chance to review our Christmas Mass Schedule, which was mailed to all registered parishioners and is found on page 4 in today’s bul-letin. Please remember that there is no 4:30pm Mass on Christmas Day. Perhaps you might consider reaching out to a neighbor or friend who hasn’t attended Mass recently. Listen to their story, share some time with them while spreading the mes-sage of Christ’s Advent, and consider inviting them to Mass with you for Christmas! Wouldn’t it be awesome to welcome some new folks to our praying community? We’d love to have them!

Heart of a Shepherd – Again this weekend, I want to thank you for your generous consideration, and for some, your monetary support of this campaign. I am very excited to share that as of last week, we have exceeded our goal by pledging $492,872 towards our goal of $371,621. That’s 133% of our goal – wow and thank you! Since we have exceeded our goal, 80% of funds over the goal will now stay here at St. Joseph as op-posed to the 50% under goal. In the midst of our 75th Anniver-sary Year, this will strengthen our Parish Endowment Fund for future generations, while also serving to help our seminarians and priests throughout the Diocese. As pledges will be redeemed over three years, there remains time to support this, with further infor-mation available at: www.catholiccommunity.org/heart-of-a-shepherd. Again, thank you for your support – it will make a dif-ference!

Ministry of Assistance wants to help! – In the midst of the Sea-son of Giving, not everyone is able to give and some are quite in need. I believe we’re all aware of the great work that Ministry of Assistance (MOA) does to help those in need. Please know that MOA may be able to provide, to St. Joseph Parishioners, lim-ited material help and/or referrals for assistance in the event of unexpected life circumstances. All you need to do is call our Parish Office at 440.238.5555 or speak to a Pastoral Staff Mem-ber. All inquiries are held in strict confidence.

Synod 2023 – You may recall that in October, the Church launched a world-wide listening process leading to a Synod (Gathering) in Rome during 2023. At that time, I invited you to stay tuned to see how you might participate in this process within the Diocese, particularly here at St. Joseph. Listening sessions have begun throughout the Diocese and here’s your chance to mark your calendars for Sunday, January 23 (1pm) or Mon-day, January 24 (7pm). Marie Hirsch, a parishioner and re-tired staff member of the Diocesan Pastoral Planning Office and I will be hosting our parish’s Synod Listening Sessions. All are invited to participate in one of these Listening Ses-sions, such as parishioners, non-parishioners, youth, teens, young adults, parents of children in the school or PSR, those who are missing who may have left the parish during the pandemic or for other reasons should feel welcome to come. We want to reach out to as many people as possible! With you on the Advent journey towards Christmas,

ADORATION OF OUR LORD

“In order to make the Blessed Sacrament and the other sacraments readily available to all, our Lord instituted the priesthood. Bringing and being Christ to the world is, of course, the most vital mission of the Church.” (Most Rev. Robert J. Carlson, Archbishop of St.. Louis)

Thank God for priests, pray for priests in the pres-ence of Our Lord and King, made possible only through the holy priesthood. For more infor-mation please contact Regina at 440-846-0055.

THE HISTORY OF ST. JOSEPH PARISH Our Early Pastors

Fr. Joseph McGraw, St. Joseph’s first pastor began his ministry on June 19, 1946. Fr. McGraw over saw the building of the Quon-set Hut and St. Joseph School, which consist-ed of 8 classrooms and a social hall. On Octo-ber 13, 1962, Fr. McGraw died in the Rectory of a heart attack.

Plans for the new church were already in place to begin the construction of a new church and rectory and started to take shape under Fr. McDonough’s leadership. Fr. McDonough served the parish for 10 years during which the present church, McGraw Hall and the interme-diate classrooms of the school were built. Fr. McDonough died on March 17, 1972 while serving St. Joseph.

Fr. Robert Donahoe was our pastor from 1972-1981. During this time St. John Neumann Church was erected. It was decided at this time, that the two parishes would share the school and it was renamed Sts. Joseph and John Interparo-chial School. In 1981, Fr. Donohoe was re-assigned to another parish.

VESTIBULE GIVING BOX

The Strongsville Food Bank advertises their greatest need each month. For the month of December they are in need of pork and beans, canned soup, boxed juice, and hot chocolate. Please place your items in the giving box in the Gathering Area and they will be distributed to the food bank, our parish food cupboard and to St. Vincent de Paul pantries. Thank you for your continued support of the needy.

Please keep in mind that we cannot accept any alcohol prod-ucts. Also, we have no need for plastic grocery bags, which we have found in the box. Thank you!

FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Without the angel’s intervention, a confused and hurt Joseph was planning to quietly divorce Mary. Those people who come into our lives at times of confusion and help us find our way are truly angels to us. Like Joseph, we need to listen to them. Frequently those angels are in our own homes.

SHARING TREE

Our 2021 Sharing Tree Project came to an end on December 6th. This was another unique year due to Covid guidelines. I have been privileged to be a part of this special project for many years and again this year, in spite of it’s uniqueness, we had a success-ful year. A huge “Thank You” to everyone who took a tag and returned the gift. Because of your generosity we were able to help two families have a merrier Christmas. Our own Strongs-ville Food Bank received 35 gift cards to help the needy in our home town and Our Lady Help of Christians received 62 gift cards to help the needy in neighboring Medina County. In addi-tion, you made monetary donations to the West Side Catholic Center totaling $1,460; Holy Family Cancer Home, $960; El Salvador, $135; our Ministry of Assistance, $160. St. Herman’s received 99 pieces (sweatshirts, hooded sweatshirts, winter caps, scarves, gloves, coats, socks, etc.) to help keep homeless men warmer this winter. Thank you all so very much. ~Mary K.

THE ROCK AM 1260

“Dare Great Things” with Fr. Nathan Cromly will move to 8 am Wednesday beginning December 22nd. At 8:30, catch an encore presentation of “God Calling”. If you haven’t listened to “Dare Great Things” you owe it to yourself to tune in. Fr. Cromly instructs families, businesses, young adults and entrepreneurs raising up leaders who

can rise to the challenge to bring virtue and hope to those who want to live an excellent, deep and meaningful life. For the most up to date programming schedule, please visit our website at am1260therock.com

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry has begun meeting again on Tuesday evenings in the Nazareth Room. Anyone interested in joining them is welcome to join. They knit and crochet shawls and lap blankets to bring comfort to those who are ill. These shawls are available at the Parish Office. Please feel free to stop in and pick one out for your loved one.

EL SALVADOR EDUCATION UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who became an Education Partner with the students of our sister parish in San Jose Villanueva! Once again the generous people of our parish donated over $11,000. This was our 16th scholarship drive and we have sent over $182,000 over these years to assist these children in need. Thank you!

YEAR END GIVING

In this season of giving, we recall that parishioners have chosen to make a year-end gift to our parish in gratitude for all the blessings they have received in life. As you plan to make the most of your charitable donations in 2021, know that we gratefully accept gifts of cash and appreciated assets such as stocks or bonds. We wanted to take this time to remind you of some important CARES Act provisions that are scheduled to expire at year’s end. These provi-sions may affect you—and even make it easier for you to make a gift to your parish. They include:

• An expanded charitable giving incentive that allows taxpayers who take the standard deduction to make up to $300 in chari-table cash contributions for single filers ($600 for married couples) to qualified charities like ours this year.

• For those who do itemize their deductions, the law allows for cash contributions to qualified charities such as ours to be deducted up to 100% of your adjusted gross income for the 2021 calendar year.

And, if you are 70 ½ or older, you may be able to make a gift of a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA that will help us in our ministry and reduce your taxable income. Talk to your advi-sors and IRA administrator for more information and to be sure that your IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution gift is made di-rectly from an IRA to a qualified charity such as our par-ish. Questions? Contact Joe Shuman in our parish office at 440-238-5555.

In order to continually enhance the efforts of the Catholic Church regarding the protection of children and the creation of safe envi-ronments, the Diocese of Cleveland adopted a training program for parents and children titled Called to Protect. This program teaches even young children about boundaries, what boundaries are, and what to do when someone violates these boundaries. Called to Protect is designed to prevent the abuse of children by teaching these skills and by facilitating conversations between children and appropriate adults about keeping safe. Since this program is part of our PSR curriculum, parents are asked to at-tend a virtual training in January. An informational email will be sent to families in January.

Being Part of the neighborhood means caring about its parishioners. Jardinefh.com

We’ve watched this area and it’s families grow together, so it’s only natural that we feel close to the people that made our community the place it is today. We treat all of the families we serve as if they made our town what it is today, because after all, they did.
