A day in the life of a SCRIP card user: by Lisa Verslues. “Leave for work, go to Eagle Stop to get gas, use Cenex SCRIP card. Go to Panera for lunch, use Panera SCRIP card. Stop at Wal-Mart on the way home, use Wal-Mart SCRIP card. Stop at Joe’s Market to pick up what I forgot at Wal-Mart, use Joe’s SCRIP card. End my day by buying Lily a new app on the iPad using my iTunes SCRIP card.” Once you get started using the SCRIP cards, it becomes second nature!

Age 70 ½ or older with an RMD from an IRA? Did you know that federal law allows tax free charitable distributions from your IRA? Charitable taxpayers who are age 70½ or older can direct “qualified charitable distributions” from their fund administrator directly to the charities of their choice, including one’s parish, school, or the parish capital campaign. This distribution may result in tax savings even if you are unable to itemize your deductions. For more information about how you can benefit from an IRA charitable distribution, please con-tact your IRA administrator or tax preparer.

Reminder: If you have misplaced your pledge card for the capital campaign, there are cards and envelopes available in the vestibule of church for your use. Also, information and forms for the capital campaign are available on the parish website, under “renovation.” Progress re-ports regarding the renovation project will be updated regularly on the website.

A “Question and Answer” session regarding the Capital Campaign for the renovation of our parish church will be held on Wednesday, August 8, at 6:00 p.m. in the school cafeteria for those who have questions or concerns about the project. Now is the time to voice any questions and/or concerns you may have about this project. Thank you.

The Holy Father’s prayer intention for August: That any far-reaching decisions of econo-mists and politicians may protect the family as one of the treasures of humanity.

Bishop McKnight’s August prayer intention for our Local Church is: May the beginning of another school year be a moment of grace for students, teachers, administrators, parents, and supporting parishes and communities to grow in knowledge of all that God provides for our good and the good of all.

FAQ – Town Hall Meeting 6/24/18 (43 people in attendance)

Q: What is the suggested cost per family over the three year pledge period? A: “Active” families / 350…$4,000 / Family. $111.00/Month/36 Months.

Q: When do you want to have the pledge cards collected to determine if you will have enough money to start Phase I of the project? A: August 1st is the goal date.

Q: Does the money collected from the “church maintenance” envelope that comes in the mail go towards the church restoration/renovation fund?

A: No. The “church maintenance” money received from the monthly envelopes goes towards routine maintenance of the church. However, we are looking to add a “church restoration/renovation” envelope to the monthly envelopes mailed out as a reminder for those that wish to give monthly.

Q: Who is bidding the building project? A: Sircal. This company was suggested by the Finance Council. Father Viviano concurred, as he had worked with them on the renovation project at Helias.

Q: Will there be a professional that will be deciding on the esthetics of the renovation, specifically, to ensure the antiquity of the building inside and out and to determine color choices on the inside.

A: As far as the antiquity of the building, a number of photos from parishioners have surfaced as well as those col-lected from the Historical Society, and by direction given from Father. It is our plan to restore the church back to how it would’ve been in that time period as much as possible.

Q: Will you be keeping the Stations of the Cross and the mural paintings. A: Yes. We will keep the Stations of the Cross and the bid includes restoration of the paintings, and to put the paintings that are currently on the wall onto canvas to preserve them for future renovations.

Q: Will there be “town hall” meetings such as this prior to each phase of the restoration process? A: Yes. It is our desire to have a meeting before each phase of this process so parishioners can offer their sugges-tions and ask any questions they may have. We want to be as transparent as possible throughout this entire process.

Q: Are there any plans for restoration of the statues in church? A: At this time we do not have any bids on statute restoration.

Q: What materials are being considered for the steeple? A: The building materials being considered for the steeple are slate and copper. For this entire project, we are looking at materials that will last us 50+ years.

Q: Can we turn the pledge cards into the offertory at church? A: Yes. Pledge cards and payments can be turned into the offertory baskets at church. If you are turning in a check, please use the envelopes that say “Church Restoration Fund” so we can accurately track your donations. Addi-tional pledge cards and envelopes can be found in the back of church.

Q: Will there be any regular update as to the amount of money being collected to date? A: Yes. We will have a fundraiser thermometer in church to show monies received to date that will be updated each

weekend before Mass.

Q: When is Phase I to begin? A: Early August

Subject: Final decisions on Phase I / ready to award contract

To: St. Joseph Parishioners

We are ready to release the Phase I work through Sircal, to the selected low bid contractor. Wanted to share all the decisions that have been made by the Phase I building committee members and the Capital Campaign team. As an FYI, the Capital Campaign team members were listed on the original brochures that were sent out, and the Phase I building committee members include: Ron Berhorst, Leo Schaeffer, Kevin Huber, Travis Rehagen, David Patterson, Steve Brune, Jim Roark, Curt Lehmen, and Randy Nilges.

The bids have come in slightly under budget, which is a good thing. There are still some unknowns with Phase I, (such as what shape the underlayment is in, after the church roof is removed), so it's good that we are under budget, as we could still incur some unknown costs. Missouri Builders from the Jefferson City area was the low bidder.

Steeple: Decided to go with copper on the steeple, which will have a steel inner layer for strength (to help prevent denting). It will patina to a brownish color over time. Estimate that it would patina over a 5-7-year span. The louver vents will be repainted. The crosses on top of the steeple will be inspected for any needed work or touch up, once they get to that area of work.

Roof: Will be installing a Uniclad standing steam metal roof with a high quality, 2605 paint finish that has a 20 year warranty. Color will be a brownish color. The contractor recommended a medium bronze, which he felt would match the copper roof after patina. We are also evaluating a mansard brown, medium bronze, dark bronze, and extra dark bronze. Color samples were dropped off this week for a final decision. As an FYI, the roofing material we are looking to use was recently installed on St. Joseph's school in Jefferson City, so if anyone wanted to see an example of it, they could view it there. The dormers on the roof will be removed. New gutters and downspouts are included in the bid.

Vinyl siding replacement: Decided to go with a Berridge shingle product as the siding replacement (https://www.berridge.com/products/shingle-systems/) in a parchment (sandstone) color, to match the look of the stone, and also matches the original look of the church (see historic photo on bulletin board in vestibule). This product has a similar warranty as the roofing material and can be installed by the same contractor.

Father and the Phase I building committee agreed that we need to consider having the entire church rewired, of which an estimate is being done. This was not in our original scope, but we are looking at this as an alternate, and will consider it. The contractor is gathering more information on this now.

Father mentioned in church last weekend that enough monies have been raised to release Phase I. We are estimating the contractor could start work in October. If anyone has any other questions, feel free to respond through the parish email, or contact one of the Phase I build-ing committee members.

Thanks,

Chris Dickneite (573-619-3541)
