28TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 4 OCTOBER 14, 2018

Pope Paul VI Blessed Paul VI, who was born Giovanni Battista Montini, was pope from 1963 to 1978. He presided over the final sessions of the Second Vatican Council and its initial implementation. He also wrote "Humanae Vitae," a 1968 encyclical on married love, the 1975 apostolic exhortation "Evangelii Nuntiandi" on evangelization and "Populorum Progressio," a 1967 encyclical on social development and the economy. Speaking in 2013 to a group of pilgrims from Brescia, Italy, Pope Paul's home dio-cese, Pope Francis said his predecessor had "experienced to the full the church's travail after the Second Vatican Council: the lights, the hopes, the tensions. He loved the church and expended himself for her, holding nothing back." And, beatifying Pope Paul VI in 2014, Pope Francis noted that even in the face of "a secularized and hostile society," Pope Paul "could hold fast, with farsightedness and wisdom -- and at times alone -- to the helm of the Barque of Peter while never losing his joy and his trust in the Lord." Pope Francis referred to him as "this great pope, this courageous Christian, this tire-less apostle," who demonstrated a "humble and prophetic witness of love for Christ and his church."

Saint Oscar Romero Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez was born on August 15, 1917, in Ciudad Barrios, El Salvador. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1942 and appointed archbishop of El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador, in February 1977, at a time when reports of hu-man rights violations by government troops and death squads were on the rise. A little more than a month after his appointment to San Salvador, Archbishop Romero’s close friend and minister to El Salvador’s campesinos, Jesuit Fr. Rutilio Grande, was assassinated. Later that same year, El Salvador’s right-wing government was over-thrown, and civil war erupted. Following Fr. Grande’s death, and amid increasing vio-lence against Salvadoran citizens, Archbishop Romero began to preach against the war and for the restoration of human rights. In February 1980, he sent an open letter to U.S. President Jimmy Carter, asking him to suspend U.S. military aid to the Salva-doran regime. On March 23, 1980, Archbishop Romero delivered a homily in which he asked Salvadoran soldiers to disobey orders to kill their countrymen. The very next day, he was gunned down by an assassin while celebrating Mass in a hospital chapel in San Salvador. The Vatican Congregation for the Causes of Saints authorized the opening of Oscar Romero’s cause for sainthood in 1993. On February 4, 2015, Pope Francis declared Romero a martyr, opening the way for his beatification, which will take place on May 23, 2015, in El Salvador.
