Roger’s Reflection
Sixth Sunday of Easter page 3
If people behave themselves ( and if we get a little bit lucky ) Covid 19 will subside enough in the foreseeable future to let many of us slowly, gradually, get back to something resembling our pre-pandemic lives.
But for many others, life will never be the same. Those strong enough and lucky enough to survive the illness will always re-member the pain and the fear. Those who lost family, neighbors and friends to the dis-ease will suffer from that loss for a long time. The people in essential occupations who put their lives on the line every single day to take care of the victims and keep the rest of us fed and safe will be physically and emotionally exhausted. They won’t feel much like the heros they really are. And many of the millions of people who lost their jobs or their businesses may never fully recover their security, especially if the virus attacks again.
But today’s Gospel gives us some hope. Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments … I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you … And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father.” Those are solemn promises Jesus made, and all we have to do to benefit from them is to do the best we can to live according to His commandments and His example.
Certainly he included the Ten Command-ments in that statement, but I suspect he was thinking more about his brief summary of them, paraphrased here: “Love God with everything you’ve got, and love your neigh-bor as much as you love yourself.”
He isn’t talking about romantic love here. I believe the kind of love he’s talking about is much more inclusive and, in some ways, lots harder to practice. It’s really a collec-tion of a bunch of our best human traits, ranging from common courte-sy on the easy end of the spectrum, to
the “ultimate sacrifice” of our lives for the sake of others.
So, what are these common human traits that are special components of loving God and our neighbor? Loving God certainly starts with obedience to the spirit of His commandments, not grudgingly, but willing-ly. It involves the courage to do the right thing in public. It includes the honesty and humility to admit when we’ve done some-thing stupid and the determination not to do an encore. It includes respect for His name in speech and writing. It involves sincere, active prayer, and conscious passive pray-er -- listening with the heart open. We could go on, but I’m sure you get the point: Many common human acts are loving acts.
How about actions with each other? Thoughtfulness: Remembering important days; Gratitude: Thanking for things done; Touching: Hugs, holding hands; Listening with both ears and full attention; Gentle-ness, even when disagreeing; Respect for others’ ideas, property, privacy. All of these things and many more are loving actions.
Both love of God and love of each other can include lots more common human ac-tions than are named above. If we do many of those things already, we are reasonably loving people. If thoughtlessness, selfish-ness or self-centeredness cause us to do few, if any, of those things, we’ve got a lot of thinking to do and a lot of habits to break.
What if we don’t like some people? Join the human race. But not liking someone doesn’t mean we can’t love them. We all deserve respect as creatures of God, and if we give at least that respect to everyone, all the actions above can and should be done whether we like someone or not. Roger LeBouton, Lay Minister

Becoming our Best Selves One Step at a Time
Dave Courchane is a respected teacher of Objibwa cul-ture. His best-known program is about the Seven Sa-cred Teachings of the Ojibwa grandfathers. It’s sort of their version of the Ten Commandments, but instead of telling what we should not do, it talks about how we should live. One of those teachings is about honesty. The Ojibwa have a very simple way of explaining how to always be honest. Put simply, it is to make choices about our be-havior with others from our hearts, not our heads. How come? Well, the heart is thought of as the center of the most tender of human feelings and traits, like love and faith and loyalty. The head, on the other hand, though capable of decisions based on these tender traits, can also be the breeding ground of our most deceitful and selfish behaviors. It’s awfully hard to scam someone, for instance, when we’re thinking about and feeling their friendship, their love, or their kindness. It’s much easier to do it when we’re thinking about what we could do if we had access to their bank accounts. There are people with blisters on their ears from tele-phoning strangers in an effort to rob them blind, yet they would never do it to people they care about. An Ojibwa who truly believes in the Sacred Teachings would never harm or pull a scam on anybody. Neither should a Christian who truly believes in the teachings of Christ.

STREAMING SOUND UPGRADES If you joined us for Mass on Fa-cebook or YouTube last Sunday or this past week, you surely no-ticed the crystal-clear sound, especially compared with our first month of livestreaming. We have made some upgrades that now make it possible to run audio directly from the sound system at both churches for use in our livestreaming events. We are continuing to explore other ways to im-prove our livestreams and other online content, especially as it becomes increasingly clear that we may need to continue the streamed Masses for some time. Even if we are able to resume public worship in the coming weeks, it will be some time before it is safe for all to return. We are deter-mined to continue doing whatever we can to keep connected with all members of our community!

Let us never lose the Love & Respect our Mothers deserve every day of their lives. As so often is the case we take for granted the amazing things our mothers do us every day, except on Mother’s Day!
Let’s keep it in our hearts to try to stay in touch with the motherly figure in your life, be it in a prayer to her in heaven, a phone call, a text or whatever way you can let her know you love her!
God Bless Mary and all Mothers. Pray the Rosary often!

ADORATION Our first Adoration went ex-tremely well. We stayed with-in the guidelines of 10 people or less in the church and kept adequate distancing. Some guidelines for next week: We will again allow a maximum of 8 people to sign up during each prayer opportunity. At this time we are not able to extend the time to more than 15 minutes due to the amazing turnout. We ask that everyone enters through the Leannah Hall side of the church and exit through the 6th Street side (unless you need to use the handi-capped assessable entrance). Someone will be in the Church and disinfect after each group. Please copy and paste the link below into your web browser (if reading this online) to sign up. If you are unable to sign up via the computer please con-tact Brad at (920) 235-7412 for assistance.

“STAR OF HEAVEN” NOVENA How Do I Pray the Novena?
On each day from May 15 through May 23:
1. Pray the Stella Caeli Exstirpavit 2. Recite three Hail Mary’s for an end to the pandemic 3. Recite “A Prayer in Time of a Pandemic”
Novena Prayers
Stella Caeli Exstirpavit
The Star of Heaven, who nourished the Lord, drove away the plague of death which our first parents brought into the world. May this bright Star now deign to hold in check the constellations whose battles have slain the people with the wound of death.
O glorious Star of the Sea, save us from the plague. Hear us, for your Son honors you by denying you nothing. Save us, O Jesus, on whose behalf the Virgin Mother beseeches You.
Hail Mary (Recite three times)
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
A Prayer in Time of a Pandemic
Loving Mother of the Redeemer, Gate of Heaven, Star of the Sea, we, your children, come to you in this time of world-wide pandemic, seeking your powerful intercession. We come to you in our weakness and uncertainty. We come to you in our loneliness and fear. We come to you with trust, Mother of Mercy, for you are our life, our sweetness and our hope. We place before you our suffering world, deprived even of the consolation of the Sacraments and the community of the Church and we beg you, dear Mother, to intercede for us with your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.
May all bishops, priests and civil leaders be given wisdom, as they seek to guide us in this time of crisis. May scien-tists be granted insight and understanding. May caregivers be endowed with compassion and generosity. May all those who are ill be restored to health. Pray that your Son protect those who are most at risk, especially health care workers, first responders and essential workers who put themselves in harm’s way for the sake of others. Beseech your Son, in His Providence, to provide for those who are unemployed or in financial difficulties.
Grant your peace of heart to those who are unable to visit loved ones, especially elderly parents. Give comfort to those who have lost family or friends and were unable to be with them in their last hours. Welcome into the Father’s House those who have died. O Mary, Comforter of the Afflicted, ease all the fear of our hearts and fill us with confidence in your maternal love and protection. Amen.

LAUDATO SI’ WEEK MAY 16-MAY 24 Pope Francis’ encyclical is a call for global action as well as an appeal for deep inner conversion when ad-dressing the “care of our common home.” Here are some of the pope’s suggestions, with references in parentheses to their paragraphs in the encyclical: *Put an end to “mental pollution.” Think deeply, live wisely, love generously. (47) *Moms and dads: teach kids to use things properly; to respect, take care of others; to ask permission po-litely; to say, “Thank you;” to control temper; to ask forgiveness; to share. *Less is more. Stop needless consumption. (193, 203, 222, 211) *Be consistent. Pro-life, environmental and social justice movements are all connected. Protecting vul-nerable species must include the unborn, endan-gered animals and the exploited. (91, 120) *End the tyranny of the screen, information overload and distractions. Watch out for media-induced mel-ancholy and isolation. Cultivate real relationships with others. (47) These are suggestions out of many that we can act on
now, without cost and without leaving our homes Please pray the common prayer for the 5th anniver-
sary of Laudato Si’ at noon on Sunday, May 24.

OPEN HEARTS AND OPEN DOORS:
WELCOMING A GLOBAL OUTREACH CATHOLIC EXCHANGE STUDENT
Hosting an exchange student is an amazing experience for you and for the exchange student. Lourdes Academy would like to welcome two
Global Outreach exchange students for the 2020-2021 academic year. Global Outreach is Catholic ex-change program with a mission of building a civilization of love by forming young dynamic Catholic servant leaders for the 21st century. Placement of students becomes a reality when a household opens the door to their heart and home and says “yes” to hosting a student. Currently, 11 students are waiting for their “Good News! We have a host family for you” letter. The students are from Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithu-ania, Poland, Slovakia and Ukraine. Please contact Barbara Tota-Boryczka, Executive Director, [email protected] (920) 540-3085 or Fr. Larry Seidl, Spiritual Director, [email protected] (920) 412-0320 for further information. Here is more information on two of the fine young students who could be placed at Lourdes Academy: Tadas is 16 years old and lives near Kaunas, Lithuania. He comes from a close family and has a special relationship with his older brother. He describes himself as having a charismatic and friendly personality. He is optimistic and likes helping others to be optimistic. He is also active and cannot stand doing nothing–he always finds activities for himself. His creative side is very strong. While he loves playing and watch-ing sports, he devotes much of his energy to developing his musical talent, playing piano, accordion and guitar. He also loves to draw and act. He is very social, likes meeting new people and finding more friends. Sofia is 16 years old and lives in a village near Kosice, the second largest city in Slovakia. Her friends and family say that the most beautiful thing about Sofia is her kindheartedness and cheerfulness. Her biggest hobby is cooking and baking, and she would like to acquaint her host family with the food of her small but beautiful country. Her main sport is swimming. As a Global Outreach student, she would like to gain new experiences, become more responsible and independent and grow spiritually.
LUNCH TIME CONCERTS It’s Duet Week! We are blessed to have Kris Isham and Connie Schuster teaming up to sing at our Concert Series starting at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, May 20.
