The epiphany of the LOrdENTRANCE ANTIPHON

Behold, the Lord, the Mighty One, has come;and kingship is in his grasp, and power and dominion.

COLLECTO God, who on this day revealed your Only Begotten Son to the nations by the guidance of a star, grant in your mercy, that we, who know you already by faith, may be brought to behold the beauty of your sublime glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT | Isaiah 60:1-6Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! Your light has come, the glory of the Lord shines upon you. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the LORD shines, and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses.

Then you shall be radiant at what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow, for the riches of the sea shall be emptied out before you, the wealth of nations shall be brought to you. Caravans of camels shall fill you, dromedaries from Midian and Ephah; all from Sheba shall come bearing gold and frankincense, and proclaiming the praises of the LORD.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM | Psalm 72R. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you.

O God, with your judgment endow the king, and with your justice, the king’s son;He shall govern your people with justiceand your afflicted ones with judgment. R.

Justice shall flower in his days, and profound peace, till the moon be no more.May he rule from sea to sea,and from the River to the ends of the earth. R.

  • The kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer gifts;the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute. All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him. R.

For he shall rescue the poor when he cries out,and the afflicted when he has no one to help him.He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor;the lives of the poor he shall save. R.

EPISTLE | Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6Brothers and sisters: You have heard of the stewardship of God’s grace that was given to me for your benefit, namely, that the mystery was made known to me by revelation. It was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that the Gentiles are coheirs, members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. Alleluia!

GOSPEL | Matthew 2:1-12When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage.” When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet:And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.” Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star’s appearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage.” After their audience with the king they set out. And behold,

the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

The Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION ANTIPHONWe have seen his star in the East, and have come with gifts to adore the Lord.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNIONGo before us with heavenly light, O Lord, always and everywhere, that we may perceive with clear sight and revere with true affection the mystery in which you have willed us to participate. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

    living catholicism

    Against storms & hurricanes

Father, all the elements of nature obeys your command. Calm the storms and

hurricanes that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise of your

goodness. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives, and

reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

    suscipe | Surrender Prayer

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my

entire will, all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return

it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your

grace, that is enough for me.Amen.

    Prayer for Liturgical Renewal

Lord Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest, bestow upon your Church the spirit of piety. Reveal to her, through the gift of your Sacred Liturgy, the depth of your love for her, the joy of the Gospel, and

    the hope of heaven.

Grant to us, especially in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, the eyes of faith,

that we might peer through the veil of Heaven as we pray the Sacred Liturgy and, being enraptured by Divine Love,

go forth to our neighbor with fraternal charity. Who lives and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God forever and ever. Amen.

St. John Chrysostom, pray for us.St. Catherine of Siena, pray for us.

    Romano Guardini, pray for us.

    Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me a channel of thy peace, that where there is hatred, I may bring love; that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness; that where there is discord, I may bring harmony; that where there is error, I may bring truth; that where there is doubt, I may bring faith; that where there is despair, I may bring hope;that where there are shadows, I may bring light; that where there is sadness, I may bring joy. Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted; to understand, than to be understood; to love, than to be loved. For it is by self-forgetting that one finds. It is by forgiving that one is forgiven. It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.Amen.

A new year often brings with it resolutions. What were your resolutions for this new year? Maybe something like eating healthier, working out more, spending more time with family, etc. What about resolutions for growing in your faith life? Conversion is the work of a lifetime, and requires us to make resolutions just like we would for everyday things like eating and exercising.

The human heart suffers from three types of greed, or “concupiscence”, which Saint John teaches us (1 John 2:15-17): the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh, and the pride of life. Basically, we want things, we want physical pleasure, and we want to be “the best” and in total control of all things in our lives without having to rely on anyone, even God.

How can we avoid or grow out of this “Triple Concupiscence”? By living out the three tenants of penance: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These three penances “express conversion in relation to oneself, to God, and to others” (CCC 1434). If I can resolve to make these three practices a part of my life, turning away from sin will get easier; desiring the Lord and his will above all else will get easier; finding peace in my daily life with Christ will get easier.

Fasting | Matthew 6:16-18Fasting is the practice of refraining from food and drink as an expression of interior penance in imitation of Christ in the desert. Fasting can help me turn away from lust of the flesh. While fasting is mandatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, we are encouraged to practice fasting at other times as well, to remember that we are not slaves to this world and to hunger for heaven above anything else. Are there times when I can regularly practice fasting; perhaps adding it to my prayer life at least once a month? Can I also fast from things other than food that I can give up for love of God?

Almsgiving | Matthew 6:1-4Almsgiving is the practice of giving money or goods to the poor. Almsgiving, like fasting, helps to keep me from being dependent on the things of the world, and helps curb the lust of the eyes. When I can be detached from the riches of the earth, I can be more focused on the needs of my brothers and sisters around me, and on loving them for God’s sake. Do I give to the poor regularly? Can I give from that “spending money” that I hold onto for myself sometimes?

Prayer | Matthew 6:5-15Prayer is the elevation of the mind and heart to God in praise of his glory. When we lift our eyes to the Lord, bringing our joys, sorrows, triumphs, and failures to Him, we grow in the relationship we desire in the depths of our hearts. Prayer helps us the overcome the pride of life; because when we become dependent on God, we realize truly how small we all are, and how great He is. How can I increase my prayer time this year? Can I set aside time to visit Christ in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist?

When we live our Catholicism out loud, embracing the truth of our need for God in everything we do, we change ourselves, we change others, and we start making the world a more beautiful place. May we all find the courage this year to reach out to God and let him lead us to heaven!
