THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Vive La Différence! People dye their hair strange colors or get a “Mohawk” just to stand out. They get tattoos or body piercings to express their indi-viduality. But then they spend hundreds of dollars buying designer clothes and trendy foot-ware so they can be like everyone else. And they keep get-ting new cell phones, computers, car and applianc-es “to keep up with the Joneses”. So, what’s the deal? Is it more important to be different or to fit in? In today’s gospel, Jesus says that we should be “in the world” without being “of the world”. In other words, we should stick out, but not “like a sore thumb”. We don’t have to wear burkas, yarmulkes or turbans; we don’t need a red dot on our fore-head. Our values, attitude and compassion should make us stand out, make it obvious to others that we are Christians. When we were kids, this was

difficult. Since almost everyone we knew was a Catholic, or at least a Christian, all we had to do to live our faith was to follow the crowd, to do like eve-ryone else. Life is certainly different today. The crowd is no longer following Jesus. If we’re going to follow Him, we’ll have to leave the crowd. While they’re heading to the beach, we’ll be headed to Church. When they campaign for the popular can-didate, we’ll be supporting the one who shares our values. When the crowd is screaming for more freedom and tolerance, we’ll be promoting the sa-credness of life, marriage, and family, and the need for more compassion, forgiveness and self-control. Maybe living by faith and values is becoming the “road less traveled” but it is still the only option for one who is following Christ. But don’t feel bad: be-ing in the world but not of the world is pretty neat!
