St.CatherineLabourewasbornMay2,1806inFain-les-Moutiers,France.Whenshewasnineyearsold,hermotherdiedandshelookedtotheBlessedVirginMarytobehermother.SheenteredtheDaughtersofCharityonApril21,1830.WhileCatherinewasstillanovice,theVirginMaryappearedtoherandaskedhertohaveamedalstruckinherhonoronNovember27,1830,inthemotherhouseoftheDaughtersofCharity,inParis,France.
CatherinesawOurLadystandingonaglobe,withdazzlingraysoflightstreamingfromheroutstretchedhands.Framingthefigurewasaninscription:“OMary,conceivedwithoutsin,prayforuswhohaverecoursetothee.”ThenMaryspoketoCatherine:“Haveamedalstruckuponthismodel.Thosewhowearitwillreceivegreatgraces,especiallyiftheywearitaroundtheneck.”
ThevisionthenseemedtoturntoshowthereverseoftheMedal:theletterMsurmountedbyacrosswithabaratitsbase;belowthismonogram,theSacredHeartofJesuscrownedwiththorns,andtheImmaculateHeartofMarypiercedwithasword.
