LIGHT “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light” (Ephesians 5:14). We are at the midpoint of our Lenten journey of conversion. As always, God never gives up on us, especially those who have “fallen asleep” along the road to conversion. The most powerful stories of conversion are proclaimed during these final weeks of Lent. They have the power to shake us out of our sleep. Today’s Gospel story of the healing of the man born blind exposes the real blindness in the time of Christ—the blindness of the self-righteous religious leaders. In a few weeks, at the Easter Vigil, the Church will proclaim “Christ our Light” as the pas-chal candle is carried into darkened churches throughout the world. May the darkness of sin that still pervades our lives, communities, and world, be dispelled by the Christ who comes to bring sight to the blind and light to the world. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FILL US Open wide the windows of our spirits and fill us full of light; open wide the door of our hearts, that we may receive and entertain Thee with all our pow-ers of adoration. —Christina Rossetti

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

FROM THE DESK OF MSGR. FRANCISCO RIOS, PAROCHIAL VICAR….

At group meetings, some time we have used the icebreaker of walking blindfolded, trusting the person who guides us, confident that we will not tumble or fall. The goal is to work as a team and to build trust. For some it is easy and for others not so easy to trust someone you do not know, someone you meet for the first time. How would this man, blind from birth, feel being in darkness? Who would he trust? Is anybody there for him to help him? As we journey through Lent, some members of our community are getting ready to receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Communion. They trusted that our cate-chists would guide them to the light of Jesus. The Gospel today shows us the sacrament of Baptism as light. The blind man lived in darkness his whole life; now in Jesus, he sees the light, he received physical sight, the light of this world but more than that, he received the light of faith, he be-lieved in Jesus the light of the world. He trusted that Jesus could heal him. Our catechumens are not blind because they have their physical sight, but now they will re-ceive a new light. The light of faith. They will be incorporated into the Body of Christ, the Church. In addition, they will have the light of Jesus. Now that they know Jesus, they will have to learn to trust in him. We, all the baptized, have that light and we need to see the reality of this new light. What does this mean? It means that we have to live in the presence of God, that we need to trust more in God’s providence especially in the mo-ments of darkness in our life; It means that all we do is to fulfil God’s plan for our life and so to enter eternal life and share the Glory of God in heaven.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

The essentials of physical life demand our attention in order to sustain our bodies. Last week Jesus told the woman at the well, who was drawing water for her household, about “living water” (Jesus himself). He also told his disciples that he had “food to eat of which you do not know.” Our Lenten Scriptures focus us on the spiritual sustenance which comes from God. Today’s Gospel again uses a physical metaphor for God’s presence in those who can see beyond the moment. Literally, the man born blind has his sight given to him. In our minds this wonderful gift should be a cause for everyone to rejoice. But no, people are skeptical, the religious leaders refuse to believe at all. Like water last week, sight is a central need. Jesus’ actions invite us to translate or recognize that our spiritual selves are even more central to our destiny than our physical well-being. We live in modern times, graced to be in a place where access to needed water and nourishment are available. Because of that the Gospel message these last two weeks may lose some of the impact that it had in Jesus’ time. We are invited to make our own translations, to ask ourselves if we are taking advantage of Jesus’ living water to refresh our spirit as we walk amidst the challenges of today’s world. Do we realize that we are called to vision that sees beyond what our eyes see, listening to Jesus as his words speak to us? Do we use our experience and insight to enable those who see less clearly to find examples in our treatment of them? We need to place ourselves in the company of Peter, James and John and “see” the luminous transfigured Jesus as the one who lights our way. In a world that seems only transactional, do this and get that, we need to look beyond the immediate present to see Jesus before us, assuring us that we are disciples … meant to see beyond our own needs to whomever we find before us. Not in a “do this and get that” way, rather as walking with an open heart, able to see differently. We are sent out into the world to spread the Good News of the Gospel, sharing that Jesus came that we be his presence to all, without exception. We certainly need help in that mission, not that we lack the ability but more that we too often forget that we are really on a mission. Lent provides us a reminder to stop, or at least slow down, in order to see as Jesus did, to drink of his living water, to replace judgment of others with a heart open to walk with them. When we can, no matter how few the moments seem to be, we are able to be recognized as a disciple of Jesus, one who invites others to know God’s love for them. Sometimes even in words.

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Until a treatment is found for the new Coronavirus we need to remember to be conscious of limiting physical contact in public. And WASH our hands often...

DESDE EL ESCRITORIO DEL MSGR. FRANCISCO RÍOS, VICARIO PARRO-

QUIAL….

Living Lent at Home: Fasting and Feasting

Fasting is the second discipline of the practices of Lent. Fasting reminds of our spiritual hunger, our need for God. Our Lenten fasting is modeled on Je-sus’ 40-day fast in the desert. Just as he fasted to prepare for his public ministry, we fast to remind our-selves of our baptismal commitment to be followers of Jesus and to remember those who are suffering in this world. Fasting is not only about food. It can take many forms. While we usually fast by eating less, we can also fast from or “give up” other things, whether they are activities or bad habits. A good way to think of fasting is if you “give up” something or a habit, what can you do instead? In other words, what can you feast on this Lent?

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SECOND COLLECTION

Pope Francis, in his Lenten message, said, “Charitable giving makes us more human . . .” and that is our experience in the SVdP minis-try. Our volunteers give of their time, talent, and treasure, and meet the needs of parishioners and neighbors when they are in great difficul-ty. With your generous donations, we can keep gas in the car, food on the table, and the bills paid. The number of calls and the amount of need has seemed especially great in the past few months. St. Vincent de Paul had a second collection scheduled for next weekend. Given the Shelter in Place and the cancellation of masses, they will not be able to take up their much needed collection. If you would like to contribute to their great cause, please visit our webpage and make your contribution online.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT

St. Catherine School News

Our Mission Carnival was a fabulous success with wonderful weather and tons of fun. Stu-

dent run activities raised funds for the Learning and Loving Center here in Morgan Hill, Awaso International School in Ghana and St. Anthony

Indian School in Zuni, New Mexico.

eWaste Drive—Postponed

Our eWaste drive has been postponed until the Covid-19 crisis ends. We will let you know as soon as we have a rescheduled date.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS

Due to the issues with Covid-19, Stations of the Cross have been put on hold until at least April 2. We will keep you apprised as conditions change.

Lent… A season

to fast, pray and give alms.

LENDING LIBRARY FOR PARENTS AND PARISHIONERS

A small lending library of faith based and spiritu-al books is available in the school lobby. If you are looking for special information about our Catholic faith or a book to inspire you to seek a closer relationship with Jesus, stop by and check out the selection.

Just take the book with you and return it when you finish. After you finish a book, you are en-couraged (certainly not required) to jot a few notes about its impact on the sheet in the front cover. If you have books about our faith and developing a relationship with Christ that you would like to share with others, you can drop them off at the school office. We’ll put them on our list, include a note sheets and get them on the shelf.

Happy Reading!

ST. CATHERINE SCHOOL CLOSED DUE TO COVID-19

St. Catherine School remains closed until at least March 30. While students are at home, teachers are providing ongoing education through distance learning. Presenting online lessons allows students to engage in meaning-ful learning so they can progress in meeting learning goals and standards. Videos, Zoom calls and adaptive software are just a few of the ways material is provided. Kudos to our teach-ers for stepping up so quickly to maintain high quality educational activities for our students!
