POINTS OF DISTINCTION■ Saint Augustine’s College was recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the Top Baccalaureate Colleges in the South.

■ Saint Augustine’s College was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.

■ The Saint Augustine’s College sports program won seven CIAA titles during the 2009-10 season. Seven Falcon teams were also recognized for having the highest GPA of the teams in the conference.

■ Twenty-five percent of the male students and 33 percent of female students at the College earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the 2009-10 academic year.

■ Saint Augustine’s College is the first historically black institution to establish its own commercial radio and television stations. WAUG 750 AM is ranked by Arbitron as one of the top 25 radio stations in the Raleigh-Durham market.

■ President Dianne Boardley Suber received the Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award from the American Association of School Administrators.

■ As part of the Cooke Street Redevelopment Project, the Saint Augustine’s College Community Development Corporation built 11 houses to revitalize the Southeast Raleigh community and offer quality, affordable housing for its residents.

UNIQUE PROGRAMS■ Saint Augustine’s College’s Forensic Science program is the first baccalaureate program in North Carolina and one of only five in the nation.

SAINT AUGUSTINE’S COLLEGE ■ The Real Estate Management and Development program is the first undergraduate real estate program in the state.

■ The Theatre and Film major provides academic, creative, and practical instruction for students seeking careers in the entertainment industry.

HISTORIC CONTRIBUTIONS■ The Bishop Tuttle Training School operated on Saint Augustine’s College’s campus from 1925 to 1941. The school trained African American women in social work. The building currently houses the College’s Army ROTC program.

■ St. Agnes Hospital was founded in 1896 on the campus of Saint Augustine’s College to provide health care and medical training for African Americans. St. Agnes, which operated until 1961, was the only hospital and training school for African Americans between Atlanta, Ga., and Washington, D.C.

■ The Saint Augustine’s College Golf Course and Recreational Complex at Meadowbrook continues to thrive since the College acquired it in 2007. Meadowbrook, founded 50 years ago, was the first black-owned golf club in the country.

NOTABLE ALUMNI■ Alex Hall: Drafted in 2008 by the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. He was the first draftee since football was reinstated in 2002.

■ Luther Barnes: Grammy Award nominee, Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee and one of gospel music’s premier vocalists.

■ Robert X. Golphin: Film, television and stage actor. He appeared in Denzel Washington’s “The Great Debaters.”
