From the Pastor’s Desk...

Green has become an adjective signifying environmental awareness and care, for example: green energy, green architecture, and green behavior such as recycling. This is not much of a stretch for us who read

in Scripture such words as: “Sun and Moon, bless the Lord, springs and rivers, bless the Lord” (Daniel 3). Further, our beloved Saint Francis of Assisi prayed, “Praise be to you, Lord, for Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Brother Wind, Sister Water, Sister-Mother Earth”. It comes as no surprise that Pope Francis’ recent teaching on caring for our Common Home opens with words from the little man from Assisi: “Laudato, Sí” (Praise to You, Lord).

Finally, in recent years green has become used as a symbol for decaffeinated products. Rather than living jacked-up and juiced-up lives, Ordinary Time invites and

challenges us to pass through the fire of desire, and to pass into more quiet commitments. “Love starts in passion and grows into car pools,” writes David Brooks and the poet Tagore wrote: “I slept and I thought that life was joy. I awoke and I saw that life was duty. I acted, and Lo! Duty was Joy”.

PARISH SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENTS

WEEKDAY MASSES & DEVOTIONS – This week we are resuming our 8:00 AM Masses in Chapel Mondays through Thursdays. Chapel will be opened from 7:00 AM to 9:00 AM for private prayer and other devotions such as the Rosary, Novenas, etc. We need all worshippers to wear a mask, enter via the Main Street doors, sanitize your hands in the lobby, sit according to our social distancing markers in the pews, and exit via the side doors of Chapel. The pastor has discontinued the reception of Holy Communion on the tongue until further notice. SPANISH MASS – Starting June 28 and continuing through Labor Day our 11:30 AM Sunday Mass in Chapel will be celebrated in Spanish. SUNDAY 7:30 AM MASS – As the need arises and as we are able we will resume our regular Sunday 7:30 AM Mass in Chapel. We are in the process of learning how many of our members feel safe enough to return to weekend Masses.

SILENT WORD – Returning today to Ordinary Time we are liturgically re-immersed in the color green. What does this “silent word” have to “say” to us, unveil for us, require of us?

The first and most obvious connection is that green is overwhelmingly the color of growth and vitality in nature. So, as ordinary Christians we

are called to be growing in grace and deepening in discipleship. “What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Justice without mercy, or mercy without justice, or either without humility, is the responsibility not only for saints but for all us “ordinary” Christians. The recent film Just Mercy ends with these words: “If we can look at ourselves closely and honestly I believe that we will see that we all need justice, we all need mercy, and, perhaps, we all need some measure of unmerited grace.”

That said, growth happens when we are not noticing it. We are to attend to our daily duties, to care for to our regular relations and relationships, to be alert for openings to practice justice and charity. Our Tradition sheds light on the spiritual journey by

teaching that it is precisely when we persist in praying in the midst of prolonged spiritual dryness, that our souls are graced to grow most.

In the tradition of religious icons, green is the color associated with Christ. On the energy spectrum, in the sub-spectrum of visible light, the colors range through: 1. Red; 2. Orange; 3. Yellow; 4. Green; 5. Blue; 6. Indigo; and 7. Violet.

Since green is the middle color, icon makers (spiritual teachers) see green as the place where the colors meet/merge/come together, and so they see green as the color for Christ, where Divinity and humanity become one. In our daily living, we might then see green as a call to live an integral and consistent life---not so much opting out (“Well, I’m only human”) as jumping in (“I am called to be holy because my God is holy and I am made in God’s image”).

CONFESSIONS – Our regular Confession schedule will resume on Tuesday July 7 (8:30 AM) and Saturday July 11 (3:00 PM). As of now we are planning to hear Confessions on the front porch of 602 S. Main ST (next to Chapel). More details to follow. PARISH OFFICE HOURS – Our Parish Office will not be open on Fridays for July and August. Thank you for your cooperation.

“WHATSOEVER YOU DO…” Saint Ann Pantry - We want to thank all those who have made financial donations to St. Ann’s Pantry which is helping 50 households a month. Your generosity has been overwhelming. At this time, though, we ask that you hold back a bit on such financial contributions until we “spend down” the pantry’s current financial surplus. In a few months as our current funds are depleted we will once again request financial donations to help with this ministry. That said, we still need your material donations to continue to assist our families with your donations of: diapers (especially sizes 3, 4, & 5); laundry detergent; baby wipes; toilet paper; paper towels; cooking oil; juice; bagged dry black beans; white rice; canned tuna; pancake mix and syrup. Donations can be placed in the bin on the front porch of the parish office (502 S. Main St). For information contact Michelle Giffroy-Rossi (610-283-1515) or Jack McKeon (610-283-1311)

Caring for Friends (formerly Aid for Friends) is a wonderfully simple program connecting meal providers with those suffering from food insecurity. Our Caring for Friends freezer will be available as it

always had been in the back room of 602 S. Main Street on Saturdays from 4:00 to 6:00 PM and on Sundays from 7:00 AM through 1:00 PM. For information contact Kate Commiskey at call (610) 933-3814 or [email protected]

“EASY TO DO GOOD” – We are blessed to have many ways by which it is easy to do good in our

community. In addition to our parish ministries we invite our members to consider volunteering through, for example: The Senior Center, PACS, Orion, the Clinic, Alianzas and the meals at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Additionally, we are blessed through our shelters: A Baby’s Breath, The House, St. Mary’s and Good Samaritan. “GIVING HOPE TO ALL” – is the theme of the 2020 Catholic Charities Appeal. This annual appeal is our main corporate effort as the Body of Christ in the five counties of the Archdiocese to serve hundreds of thousands of our neighbors in need of material and social assistance. For more visit www.catholiccharitiesappeal.org

Emmaus Ministry – Summer/Fall 2020 During this difficult time of COVID-19, the St. Ann Emmaus Bereavement Ministry and the Nourish/Emmaus Caregivers Ministry would like to offer its support to anyone who is in bereavement or is taking care of a loved one who is ill. Normally, these two ministries offer in-person assistance through weekly small–group meetings for listening, mutual support and prayer. However, due to the current pandemic, we are unable to operate as we normally would, and this may cause our parishioners to feel isolated and overwhelmed. In order to move forward creatively during this time, the Emmaus team would like to offer support by phone to those who are currently in need of such assistance. If you have lost a loved one or are in a caregiving situation and would like someone to contact you by phone, please reach out to the contacts listed below and we will set up a time to talk.

Saint Ann Parish Protocols for Weekend Masses as of Saturday June 20, 2020

Introduction

We thank you for your cooperation, patience and good spirit as we live through the process of being a parish within the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Please Note

No one is obliged to attend Mass. Archbishop Pérez has suspended the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays or Holydays of Obligation until further notice.

If you are sick (symptomatic), stay home for your own sake and for the sake of others. Even though the chapel will be sanitized thoroughly prior to each weekend’s Masses, and between our weekend Masses, please err on the side of caution.

If you are in an “at risk” category, please stay home and participate in our livestreamed Mass. You are at risk if you are an older adult (age 65 and older) or if you are a person of any age who has a serious underlying medical condition.

We will publish the Scripture Readings and the Act of Spiritual Communion on Flocknote before each Mass. You may opt to print the Flocknote liturgical aid for the week and bring it with you or you might prefer to use Flocknote via a mobile device during Mass. Please note, however, that chapel does not yet have WiFi.

Limited Seating Capacity

In the process of implementing the protocols for social distancing we are learning that we can accommodate about 70 to 75 individual worshippers per Mass. This number is fluid, though, because those who live in the same dwelling may sit together more closely.

How Do I Reserve A Seat for Mass?

With patience and a good spirit. In this unprecedented situation we are asking for your cooperation by helping us to prepare for and celebrate Mass in a way that includes public health precautions. Remember, you are not so much “reserving a seat” as helping us prepare to worship together safely.

Each Wednesday at 2:00 PM we will post a sign-up link on our Parish Homepage. Please follow the instructions of our link and please let us know if you have any difficulties with our process so that we may continue to improve our reservation process. You may also reserve seats by phoning the parish office (610-933-3732) at or soon after 2:00 PM on Wednesdays.

What If I Am Not Able to Reserve a Seat for Mass? We will continue to listen to our members and do what we can to have a seat for everyone.

We will continue to livestream our 9:30 AM Sunday Masses for those who are not yet comfortable gathering in a large setting and for our members whom we are not able to accommodate due to social distancing limitations in chapel

Arriving at Chapel

The front doors of Chapel will be opened 30 minutes prior to the starting time of Mass, for now this means that the Chapel doors will be open at 4:00 PM on Saturdays and at 9:00 AM on Sundays.

Entering Chapel

Everyone must enter by way of our Main Street doors which (weather permitting) will be propped open.

Please maintain proper social distancing while waiting to enter the chapel.

Everyone must wear a mask and everyone must sanitize his or her hands as they enter the chapel using the sanitizers that will be located in our Main Street Lobby.

Non-contact forehead thermometers will be used to check the temperature of each worshipper.

There will be a secure cabinet in the Main Street lobby in which you may place your Sunday donation.

As you enter, masked ushers will welcome you and direct you to a seat in chapel. No one may seat himself or herself .

Holy Water fonts will be empty and no holy water will available to take home until further notice.

The pews that will be in use will have seats designated. That said, families who live in the same dwelling may sit more closely together in the same pew.

During Mass

▪ No Entrance Procession. Please note that the priest and lector will not be wearing masks while performing their functions in the sanctuary.

▪ No hymnals and no singing

▪ No Quiet Room (Cry Room)

▪ No Collection during Mass. You may drop your offering envelope or loose cash into the secure cabinet in the Main Street Lobby of chapel as you enter Chapel or you may choose to use online giving as many of our members are doing by visiting https://churchofsaintann.org/donations

▪ No Presentation of Gifts

▪ Please do not hold hands during the Our Father

▪ No Sign of Peace until further notice.

Holy Communion

While our worshippers are welcome to receive Our Lord in Holy Communion, no one must receive Holy Communion. You may attend Mass and opt to make an Act of Spiritual Communion.

All those administering Holy Communion will sanitize their hands in public view and wear masks.

Communicants should not be wearing gloves when they receive Communion. Communicants should wear their mask as they receive the Sacred Host.

Communicants will be directed to the proper Communion Station by our ushers and we will have single lines as communicants approach Communion Stations. For now we will discontinue the double line approach we have used in our center aisle.

The floors will be marked for social distancing as people approach the Communion Stations.

For now no one may receive Holy Communion on the tongue.

After receiving Holy Communion, take two steps to the side, lower your mask, receive the Body of Christ, reset your mask and return to your seat.

Dismissal & Departure

The Priest will leave first.

The ushers will direct the exiting from the pews, beginning in the rear of chapel and congregants may exit by any one of our side doors in chapel. Weather permitting, the side doors will be propped open as Mass ends.

Please leave chapel immediately when you are dismissed and continue to observe social distancing. Unfortunately, no one may remain in Chapel for private prayer until further notice.

Thank you for your cooperation.
