THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY
A correspondence begins between Juliet Ashton and
members of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie
Society, with them sharing their experiences of Nazi
Occupied Guernsey. When an idea for a book catches
Juliet, she goes to visit the island, making lifelong friends
and taking life changing steps along the way. This book is
told by way of letters and as the reader, you become
enchanted by the writers of them and the love Juliet
comes to feel for each of the Islanders; Dawsey, Amelia,
Isola, Eben, Kit and Elizabeth. A beautiful story of love,
friendship and the sadness of friends lost.
Historical Romantic Drama, 2018, Rated 12A.

I can't believe that September is
upon us already, although there
was definitely an autumnal feel to
the weather on walking through the
village to the WI meeting last
evening. However, this did not
deter the stalwart WI members who
turned up in a respectable number
with only a few apologies.
Our talk this month was by
Phyllida Scrivens on the subject of
her first biography entitled
„Escaping Hitler: a Jewish boy's
quest‟. The hero of this book is
Gunter Stern, a young boy born in
1924 of Jewish parents in a small
village outside of Koblenz called
Nichenich in Germany. At school
he was the only Jewish child but
was not ostracised at all, having
many friends amongst his fellow
pupils. His father had served in the
German army and had been
wounded several times during
WW1 and insisted that Hitler
would not do anything bad to
another veteran. Unfortunately, this
was not the case as his father was
dragged off one night to prison. At
the age of 14, having applied to
The Kinder Transport scheme for a
visa to travel to England and
having received no offer of a home,
Gunter decided bravely to get there
by himself. He reached Holland
after 7 days of travelling across
Europe only to be sent back home
by the well-meaning Dutch. He
finally reached England on a
Kinder Transport visa some time
later and was taken in by a family
who saw to it that he had a good
education. His father and mother
were both killed in concentration
camps which he didn't find out
until very much later in life.
Gunter, having changed his name
on joining the British army to
Joe Stirling, became a successful
business man after the war and
was made Sheriff of Norwich in
1975.
Phyllida was a great speaker and
very passionate about her subject
and spoke very fondly of her
friendship with Joe Stirling who
is still alive at 94! Her book was
for sale at the meeting and several
ladies bought one.
The competition was An
Inspiring Quote from any source,
and the winner was “ A woman is
much like a teabag as you only
find out how strong she is when
she is in hot water”. Very clever
Angela.
The lunch club will be meeting at
Browns, Mundford this month.
Member's approval was sought
for going to Lincoln Christmas
Market in December en masse.
Our Birthday meal will be at the
King's Arms in Shouldham in
November.
NORTHWOLD WI
Bex reported that the Book Club
had its second meeting on the
4th September to discuss „The
North Water‟ by Ian McGuire. This
was an extremely brutal, gritty
story of the whaling business in the
late 1850's, sort of Moby Dick on
steroids, that certainly didn't pull
any punches. I don't think many of
the members actually enjoyed
reading this book but it was
certainly eye opening.
Supper was provided by Doreen,
Irene and Eileen and was enjoyed
by all before the end of the
meeting.

Everyone Remembered
To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the Royal British Legion have created a w e b s i te c a l l ed , E ve ry o ne Remembered. The aim is to have all those who died during World War I commemorated on this site by November 11th this year. When you visit this site you will be able to search by name and leave your commemoration and if you wish to upload a photograph and leave a story about that person. There will be many who died that do not have living relatives to remember them and this site allows us to leave a message of thanks and gratitude to them too. I have left a message and uploaded the information and photographs that I have for all of the men on our war memorial and I would encourage everyone who can, to visit the site and remember someone. If you need any further information I will be pleased to help. Ann Howarth 01366 727772
NORTHWOLD WAR MEMORIAL We are pleased to report that our War Memorial has been given Grade II
listed status, as a monument of significant historic/architectural interest.
PLEASE HELP US TO RECREATE THESE LOVELY PHOTOGRAPHS
These photographs were taken in July 1920 at the dedication of the Northwold War Memorial.
As this year is the centenary of the end of World War I, we thought that this Remembrance Sunday would be the ideal time to try and recreate these photographs. Please help by coming to the Remembrance service at the War Memorial on Sunday 11th November, it looks as if most of the village attended in 1920, let’s see if we can have just as many people attending this year.
We also hope to make wreaths similar to those in the photograph using crochet and knitted poppies, so, if anyone would like to help us by making some we would be most grateful.
Copies of these photographs will be
on display in St Andrew’s Church,
Northwold, in Mrs Bloomfield’s
corner and if you would like any
further information please contact
either Brenda Ayres 728565 or Ann
Howarth 727772.

WHAT DOES THE DOCTOR THINK THIS MONTH?
I have never been interested in
football as I was put off the game at
about the age of five. Before World
War II, my father had been a Scottish
footballer of some renown and he had
kept his skills up to scratch while in
the RAF during the War. By the time I
was a toddler, he was working so hard
that football had become a hobby of
the past; however, he did dust off his
skills occasionally to engage in a
“dribbling” exercise with his first
born son. This involved the two of us,
a football and one pair of feet (his)
flying about in circles, stepping over
the ball, flicking it in the air and all
the other skills demonstrated by
skilled footballers. The result was that
I never ever managed to deprive him
of the ball and, being fairly intelligent,
I soon realised that football was not
the game for me and I lost all interest
and went off on my bike.
As the years wore on,
Saturday evenings became a bit of an
issue. Wherever we were, we had to
get home in time for the football
match results so Dad could check his
“Pools” coupon. This involved great
concentration for a great deal of time
and we all had to keep very quiet.
Initially, I amused myself by trying to
second guess the second half of each
score by listening to the inflections in
the voice of the poor man who had to
read out the results. During later
weeks, I amused myself by making
'bus signboards out of old wooden
cigar boxes or, if pushed, oblong
tissue boxes. In those days, there were
two direction boards on the front and
back of 'buses, saying stuff like
HESWALL via PENSBY on
Crosville 'buses or, if we were in
Scotland, SMT (Scottish Motor
Traction) buses might have
GLASGOW CENTRE via
LESMAHAGOW. The trick was to
cut two oblong slits in the front of
the box and then insert four rods (eg
bits of garden cane) through the box
from one side to the other, both sides
protruding a couple of inches. Two
paper blinds were created listing all
the places to which the 'bus might go
and these were then wound over the
rods. By turning the protruding ends
of the rods, the blinds would roll
behind the cutout slots giving
tantalising glimpses of places my
bus might one day visit. The 'bus
conductor always had a lovely
chromium handle to turn to move the
blinds to the correct destination and I
used to love watching him. If all this
is confusing, talk to my old friend
Robin Hood who has such a 'bus,
still with blinds intact, or google
“Collectable Bus & Coach
Destination Blinds” which will show
you lots of unrolled examples. I was
also upset because I could not watch
Quatermass and the Pit which I used
to do from behind the settee and
covered by cushions!
Sorry for the slight
digression. The point of the story is
that I have never had any interest in
football. Fast forward to last month.
We are in Madeira with Calum and
his family and Calum's son is an avid
Ronaldo fan. Ronaldo is a 33 year
old footballer, born and raised in
Madeira, signed by Alex Ferguson
for Manchester United in 2003 at the
age of 18 for about £12 million and
signed by Juventus for over £100
million a couple of months ago. He is
arguably the best footballer in the
world and, in Madeira, there is a
massive museum dedicated to all his
cups, golden boots and so on. Calum's
son always makes the pilgrimage and,
this year, it was my turn to accompany
him. Oh Joy! One of the highlights of
the museum is a full size Madame
Tussaud's type effigy of Ronaldo on a
plinth. A queue of adoring fans waits
to take turns to stand on the plinth and
have their photo taken with Ronaldo.
We thought it would be cool for me to
join the great man for a picture so I
went to get up on to the plinth. Since
all the surgery, my balance is rubbish;
I tripped and fell onto the great man,
nearly knocking him off the plinth. A
horrified collective gasp arose from
the queuing fans and I have since had
nightmares -what if I had knocked him
to the floor and broken his head off in
front of the fans? In the end, all was
well and I would be happy to show
you the resulting picture.
Two studious friends
were at university. One noticed that
the other had a new bike and enquired
how is friend had come by it. It
transpired that a beautiful girl, who
had been hanging around his friend,
had ridden up to him, jumped off her
bike, taken off all her clothes and said
“You can have anything you want!”.
“Good choice” says the first lad “Her
clothes wouldn't have fit you anyway”.
Best wishes to you all, Ian Nisbet

looking forward to playing my role in the 3 communities our schools serve. I believe the link between staff, parents, governors and the local communities is vital to achieve the best possible education for our children. The evidence of this is already clear to see within our partnership of schools – whether it’s developing
an outside area, the library or another project – the benefits of this are the children and their education. I look forward to making links with the wider community and playing my part within it. Regards, Andrew Stratton

PRESENT: Cllr R Crisp, Cllr C Anderson, Cllr M Peake, Cllr S Smith, Cllr I Quinn, Cllr G Gillett, Cllr C Sharp, Cllr N Nickles, Cllr C Pointeer, Cllr David Human, Cllr H Hogan. Mrs N Cooper (Clerk) There were 4 members of the public. 1. PUBLIC FORUM (15 MINUTES) Item 12 Whittington Park was brought forward for discussion on approval of the Chair. It was noted that the new swing seat which has been purchased for Whittington Park will cost £141 incl. vat to install by Bonnets as the current shackles are non-standard. This cost was agreed by all. * Cllr Pointeer to progress. Some discussions have been had with Whittington residents about what would be liked in Whittington Park but no specific ideas have been provided. After discussion it was agreed that a small questionnaire should be developed for delivery to all Whittington residences to determine what parishioners would like to see there. *Whittington Councillors to develop a questionnaire and bring it to the October meeting for approval. 2. ACCEPTANCE OF APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE There were none. 3. MEMBERS’ DECLARATION OF INTERESTS and DISPENSATION REQUESTS (for items on the Agenda) Nothing was declared. 4. TO APPROVE AND SIGN THE MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING held on 3rd July 2018 The minutes were approved by all Councillors present. The minutes were signed by the Chairman as a true record
of the meeting held on 3rd July 2018. The final version will be available on the website. 5. REPORTS AND MATTERS ARISING FROM MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETINGS (for information only) Item 8b, the items could not be refunded as they were paid by card. Item 16a, the bin has been installed but the BCKLWN have retrospectively advised that it is sited too high. Discussions are on-going to resolve this. Item 23a, to be deferred for now. 6. LOCAL AUTHORITY REPORTS a. Norfolk County Council – representative not present b. Borough Council of Kings Lynn & West Norfolk – nothing to report 7. CORRESPONDENCE i. Newsletters CPRE, Norfolk Constabulary, Norfolk Association of Local Councils ii. Annual Review of Small Schools, Norfolk County Council Children’s Services iii. West Norfolk Early Help Bulletin and Service Directory for August iv. Norfolk Rivers Trust: WaterCoG - Water Management Survey v. Also a complaint has been received into the Council about a fence height. *This will be passed on to the BCKLWN. It was advised that the Wissey catchment update will be amended to include the correct villages. 8. SCHOOL LANE CAR PARK UPDATE The plans to satisfy Highways
requirements for the visibility splay have
been approved. The Public Rights of Way
team have concluded that historically FP6
was 4-5m along its length and therefore a
1m gap would be an illegal obstruction.
The plans have been adjusted and
resubmitted and a response is awaited.
Quotes for the works have been difficult
to attract. 5 companies have visited the
site and invited to quote but only two
have responded with costs to date.
Creative Driveways have costed for part of
the works; to widen and gravel the
driveway. NCC Highways have quoted for
the full job. The NCC quote was discussed
and it was agreed that the cost is greatly
in excess of the original budget and could
not be approved at this point. The
maximum grant from National Lottery
Awards for all is £10,000 which would not
offset the quoted cost sufficiently.
It was noted that contractors for the
highway frontage must be NCC approved.
This was a limiting factor for Creative
Driveways. *It was agreed that Cllr
Anderson should go back to Creative
Driveways and Highways to see if there is
a way of piecing together an affordable
way forward for the project. * Clerk to
check when the Lottery Grant must be
spent by.
It was noted that some antisocial
behaviour on the car park site has been
reported to the police. This included the
riding of quadbikes on the land. This
report has been followed up and police
have visited the site. Any subsequent
antisocial activity on the site should be
reported directly to the police.
9. NORTHWOLD SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB ROOF REPAIRS – estimates are awaited. *To put on October agenda.

NORTHWOLD WAR MEMORIAL AND WHITTINGTON WAR MEMORIAL have both been awarded Listed Building Status by Historic England. This was noted. 12. Discussed under item 1. 13. CONSTABLES CHARITY LAND The Clerk advised that she had looked through the paper work and on the Charities Commission website as to whether the charity land can be sold. A copy of the scheme dated 18th March 1930 (Charities Commission) is held at Norfolk records office in Norwich and is needed to determine the governing rules which should determine whether a sale can take place. Cllr Human offered to visit the records office. *Clerk to follow up initial contact with the office to see if a copy could be received and liaise with Cllr Human if a visit is still necessary. 14. A request from Methwold PC to remind people to clear up after their dogs along Mill Drove was noted. 15. UPDATE ON CURRENT WORKS a. Common Drove Footbridge – both Common Drove and Ingham’s Lane footbridges have had temporary repairs. Signage has been put up at Ingham’s Lane footbridge to say ‘Pedestrians Only No Livestock’ upon request from NCC. b. SAM2 / Trod. The SAM2 is ready, training to be organised for Cllr Nickles and Cllr Piinteer before this can be used. *Clerk asked to ensure that the SAM2 is covered by the insurance. *Cllr Pointeer to purchase padlocks for the device. The trod is still awaited. Clerk also asked to find out what
happened to the flashing speed sign which used to be located on the A134 100m south of the junction with Methwold Road. *Clerk to ask Highways c. Public Rights of Way Signage and Road Signs - the PROW sign for FP6 has been requested. The road signs are all reported as having been repaired. d. Play area repairs – There have been company delays on this. *Clerk to request a date for completion. e. Crown Inn – a purchase price for the pub has been agreed and this has been publicly announced. Financial contributions are still being sought. Shares can be purchased for £50. Loans of a minimum of £2000 are requested and these will be paid back from Yr 4 and will be eligible for tax relief. 16. CEMETERIES:
a. Christchurch wall has been damaged. This is believed to have occurred during recent treeworks as ordered by the Parish Council. The Church insurance does not cover the cost for repairing this. *Clerk asked to contact the contractors to find out why no one was informed of the damage at the time. *PCC to seek three estimates for repair. * To place on October agenda.

Page 12
b. The following planning applications were discussed at the meeting. i. 18/01495/F New house and garage at Land Copse And Pond SE of Heathlands And W of A134A Thetford Road Northwold Norfolk. The Parish Council objects to this application on the grounds of reduced traffic safety due to the sites location close to a dangerous crossroads where any increased traffic usage will compromise safety. ii. 18/01561/F Proposed residential bungalow 5 Glebe Close Northwold. The Parish Council objects on the grounds of it being a cramped form of development. iii. 18/01541/F Removal or variation of condition 9 of planning permission 07/02097/F No objections raised
20. FINANCES: a. Election Costs - – The BCKLWN has advised by email that Borough Council costs for administrating uncontested elections will now be recharged to individual Parish Councils. For Northwold and Whittington Parish Council there are two wards so the costs will be double. Democratic services estimate that the cost would be around £200 per ward for this. Contested elections are already being budgeted for but Democratic services have advised that the charge for contested elections council be up to £2000 per ward. Therefore, the amount of £1000, which is already allocated to this each year, needs to be rolled forwards incrementally each 4-year period between elections. The next elections will be in 2019. b. 2019/20 Parish Partnership Funding – discuss project ideas. Deadline 7th December 18. *To be placed on October agenda. Clerk to investigate whether this could contribute towards the car park cost. c. 5 Year Financial Plan – rolling agenda item. Costs for Whittington amenity land flagged up. d. Emergency treeworks were undertaken by NCC since the last meeting to remove a fallen tree in Church Lane Whittington. It was confirmed that this tree is the responsibility of the Parish Council and the payment was approved. The accounts to 4th September 2018 were accepted and cheques to be signed and payments approved in accordance with the table on the next page.
21. TRAINING: No new requests

Paperwork, Paperwork
and Solicitors. The team and I have been trying to get
this update out to you all for a while
now. Why has it taken so long? Read
on to find out.
As you know, we've agreed a price for
The Crown with Dave & Cheryl. This
shows tremendous commitment on
their part to help ensure the pub
remains as a pub, open for all and
working as a pub should work. Not
only that, but by agreeing to sell to the
community they have shown great
faith in what we can achieve.
Since that day we've appointed a
solicitor to act on our behalf and guide
us through the purchase which is, of
course, subject to certain - highly
specific - legal requirements. If you've
ever bought or sold a pub that's open
to the public you'll know this part of
the proceedings is not as
straightforward as a residential
purchase. For a start there are pages
and pages of paperwork to complete -
some of which concern the health and
safety aspects of a public house, some
are licensing, some financial and so on
and so forth. One other important
legal requirement is the buildings
survey which should happen within
the next two weeks. I look forward to
giving you all an update when the
report is available.
To help us get through the current
minefield of paper-shuffling we, the
committee, have now begun to have
weekly, rather than monthly,
meetings. This should help us all to
stay on track and prevent delays as
we head towards completion in mid-
November. Yes, that soon.
For many months, our group looked
forward to the day we could start
this stage, looking back it seems to
me that the fundraising part of this
project was perhaps the easiest but I
was never a big fan of paperwork.
As we keep reminding ourselves;
each day, each meeting, each signed
document brings us closer to our
first day open as a community pub.
And that's the point, right? Bring it
on.

It is with regret that the Village Hall Trustees confirm
that the planned Quiz Night on Fri 28th Sep was
cancelled due to the low number of pre-booked

Due to catering planning, the event was unfortunately
deemed non-viable and all tickets have been refunded.

be determined. This new date will be published in

planning in future, please email [email protected]
and I will bring this to the attention of the VH

COURGETTES
(or How to back a sure-fire
loser every time.)
Suddenly, there is an explosion, an
invasion, of courgettes.
Which reminds me of the old saying,
“Be careful what you wish for, because
what you wish for is often what you
gets.”
It certainly seems to hold true for this
diminutive marrow,
But in a curious way, because this year
I planted five courgette plants and each
one is producing enough to fill a fair-
sized wheelbarrow.
Its weird.
The wise (so they think), scientific
crowd, sneer at the idea that you can
foresee the future – but I just think, and
stroke my beard.
I chew the facts over in my head, and
think, “These guys may be experts in
their fields, but I still think their
perception just ain't so, otherwise, how
do you account for the following fact -
That deciding how many courgette
plants to set out and nurture, is a
deliberate, carefully thought out,
calculated act?”
And, as previously stated, this year
five plants grow in the vegetable
bed, each producing like a massive
“rabbits on Viagra” plague.
The intention of these plants to
reproduce is determined, forceful,
and most definitely not vague.
It is an incredible feat.
And because I am generous with my
produce, people have taken to
crossing over, away from me, to the
other side of the road, when they see
me walk down the village street.
Last year, I decided to get the size of
my crop exactly right to meet my
personal needs by planting just one
such squash.
So that my store would not, with
courgettes, become awash.
The result? Two courgettes, both of
which were so miserable that they
were carefully examined, then
treated with contempt, by the local
snails.
When I slips up, I really fails.
But this happens every time -
If I set out one or two plants, I search
vainly for any kind of crop. Plant
five, and the resultant courgette
mountain is what many farmers
would consider sublime.
So somehow I must know, in
advance, just what kind of growing
year it will be -
I plant exactly wrong each time. That
can't possibly be chance - or is it just
me?
I reckon that I really know – I can
predict the future crop size, even if in
a very strange and perverse way. But
there's no need to panic.
Just remind me not to build a ship at
considerable expense, and then decide,
when launching it, to christen it
“The Unsinkable Titanic”.
