Catholic Life, March, 2013 20 Saint Andrew’s Church, Kiev, Ukraine FROM WIKIPEDIA, THE FREE ENCYCLOPEDIA The Saint Andrew’s Church is a major Baroque church located in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. The church was constructed in 1747–1754, to a design by the Imperial Russian architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli. It is sometimes incorrectly referred to as a Cathedral. The Saint Andrew’s Church overlooks the historic Podil neighborhood, situated on a steep hill to which the church gave its current name – Andriyivska Hill. It is currently one of four architectural landmarks of Ukraine, which were put down on the List of Mankind Treasures of Five Continents by the world society. As the church sits atop a hill, foundation problems have been one of the main concerns of preservationists. More recently, the foundation below the church has started to shift, causing some concerns that the church’s foundation might collapse. Cracks have already appeared in the foundation, and some of the church’s falling decor has been found in neighboring areas. Churches of the World

St. Brigid’s Primary School Kyogle

Believe Achieve Succeed The theme for St Brigid’s in Kyogle in 2013 is ‘Believe Achieve Succeed’ and it got off to a flying start on Australia Day with the announcement of the recipients of the Australia Day Awards in the town. Mrs Vicki Jansen (pictured below), a long time resident of Kyogle and much loved and respected teacher at St Brigid’s received the award for ‘Enhancing Children‘s Participation in Community Life’.

Vicki is a very committed teacher at the school but she also dedicates much of her time out of school to community events involving children including swimming club, carols by candle-light, Christmas hampers for St Vincent de Paul, entertainment for the elderly and infirmed at Kyogle Aged Care and Relay for Life support.

Vicki was humbled and honoured to be nominated for this award and thrilled when she learned that she was the winner in her category. Vicki certainly lives out the theme of Believe Achieve Succeed and is pictured with her new recruits, a class of fresh-faced, excited new Kindergartens on their first day of school this year.

exciting Start to the Year 2013 is shaping up to be an exciting year for students and staff of Xavier Catholic College. Whilst the college has had an Student Representative Council in its early years, the staff is keen to revive this wonderful opportunity for the students to become more actively involved in the community life of the school. The students were inducted to their positions and presented with their badges at a special ceremony combined with the Ash Wednesday Liturgy.

At the same ceremony, HSC student of 2012 Karly Potts was presented with the College Dux award. Karly scored an ATAR of 99.6. Karly spoke to the student body of the importance of a balance in education and of being fully involved in the many opportunities that the college offers. She also stressed the importance of support from family and friends and thanked the staff for the assistance she had been given during her time at Xavier Catholic College. Karly has decided to accept an offer from the University of Queensland to study medicine after considering a number of options open to her.

Another exciting initiative for the college is the change to the structure of the House system. Sports Coordinator Mr Pat Kennedy said, “We are really aiming to increase the level of competitiveness, participation and spirit.” The college will have its first competitive event at the swimming carnival to be held in March.

After the excitement which met the college’s first musical, The Wiz, Mrs Amanda Falvey has announced that the Creative and Performing Arts faculty will again take to the stage in 2013 with the production The Beauty and the Beast. Auditions have been held and rehearsals have begun in the lead up to the performances to be held in early July. Stay Tuned!

Dr Jake Madden, Principal of St Augustine’s watching as Bishop Jarrett rings the school bell, marking the opening of the centenary year at St Augustine’s

celebrating 100 years of educationOn February 3rd 1913, the school bell at St Augustine’s Primary School Coffs Harbour was rung for the very first time by the Good Samaritan Sisters to mark the opening of the first Catholic Primary school in the area. On the 4th of February this year the school community marked the beginning of 100 years of education at St Augustine’s, with a Centenary Mass, celebrated by the Bishop of Lismore, Rev Geoffrey Jarrett.

During Mass, Bishop Jarrett told many historical stories about early school life at St Augustine’s and the arrival of the Good Samaritan sisters in Coffs Harbour. Staff and students alike listened eagerly to how the sisters established the school with few resources and through donations of goods by local parishioners.

Following Mass, staff, students and parents surrounded the school bell and recreated the events of 1913, with the ringing of the school bell by Bishop Jarrett.

Dr Jake Madden, principal of St Augustine’s said, “This is the beginning of a special year in our school’s history, where we reflect upon those who have gone before us and the significant contributions they have made to our school. Today marks the start of our centenary celebrations in what should be an exciting and memorable year for our past and present school community.”

A schedule of events has been marked out for the coming year, aiming to celebrate the achievements of all those who have worked to bring the school its current levels of success.

Thumbs up!...Wez Brown and Nelson Langley think that their pancakes are the best!

Mmmmm... it’s Pancake timeTuesday 12th February was a special day for all students of St Patrick’s, Macksville. Each year, as part of the tradition of Shrove Tuesday, St Patrick’s students make pancakes in their class groups. They then are able to enjoy their culinary skills by eating their creations, covered in their favourite topping. Lots of smiling faces, happy tummies and sticky fingers, with comments of “it being the best day ever!!” Fun times at St Pat’s...

Family MassOver the last year our Parish has been holding a family Mass on the second Sunday of each month. This has been a great opportunity to build our Parish community and involve our young families in parish life. Each month we celebrate Mass together with the children forming a choir backed by a guitar group. After Mass the families and parishioners meet together back at our parish school to share morning tea, socialise and participate in a range of games. As a parish community, we started the year on a

very positive note as we celebrated our first Family Mass in February with over 40 young families attending. During Mass our new student leaders for 2013 were inducted and our school staff professed their commitment to Catholic education in our parish school. Afterwards, everyone gathered back at our school for a shared morning tea and sausage sizzle. This was a wonderful turnout and offered a fantastic opportunity to build and strengthen our Parish community. We hope our next Family Mass will see just as many, maybe more families attend as we gather for the start of Catholic Schools Week.

Year 2 Visits crowley VillageYear 2 went to Crowley Village to socialise with the residents. They performed two very entertaining songs and displayed a variety of pieces of class artwork. Following their performance, they had the opportunity to mingle with the residents. Some children engaged the elderly residents in a delightful chat, while others displayed their reading skills by sharing a book. Crowley says thank you by providing a drink and biscuit for the students, which the children enjoyed. Holy Family is aiming to build upon community in the Ballina Parish by fostering the relationship with Crowley Village. The residents and students gain so much from this very worthwhile experience.

A Wet Start to the New School YearWhat a way to begin the new school year at St Carthage’s Lismore. On Tuesday 29th January most teachers returned to school to find that the bottom playground was under at least 2 metres of flood water. The water level was a continuous topic of discussion all day long. There was only a minimal drop in the level of the water all day.

Those students who could get to school on Wednesday 30th January were amazed that their playground was a river. Fortunately by Wednesday afternoon the children had their playground back, Bangalow Road had re-opened and the clean-up had begun.

In the meantime colour houses met to practise their war cries and to encourage their team mates to enter events, ready for our swimming carnival at Alstonville Pool on Friday 1st February. Who would believe floods at the beginning of the week and swimming carnival at the end of the week!

What a fantastic day it was, sun shining, competition and novelty events, not to mention Colour Houses cheering on their team members.

The second week saw the school community of 619 students gather to celebrate the Commencement of the School Year Mass which included the blessing and presentation of the student leaders badges to our sixteen school leaders. The annual announcement of the Lismore Lions Club recipient for community spirit was made, with Emilie Hughes taking out the award for 2013.

Our Welcome BBQ & Disco followed in the evening with 1100 sausages cooked and several cartons of soft drink consumed. This was a great way to come together as a school community to get to know the other families.

Who says that schools don’t hit the ground running, or in our case, swimming!

2013 marks an exciting year for St Joseph’s Regional College and St Paul’s High School in Port Macquarie, as they begin the incorporation of iPads into the school curriculum. On their first day of high school, some 400 Year 7 students arrived at the schools with their brand new devices, excited about the fantastic benefits that are sure to come with such an innovative and powerful device.

Though some parents have voiced concern over the cost of the iPad, Leader of Pedagogy at St Joseph’s Regional College, Mr Chris Delaney, says that the benefits of using such a device will far outweigh the costs; “It is very important for us to prepare kids for this technology rich world we live in and move forward as leaders in IT”.

iPads have been introduced in a range of schools over the past two years and after seeing the positives first-hand, teachers from St Joseph’s and St Paul’s began investigating ways iPads could be incorporated into their own classrooms.

Year 7 St Joseph’s student, Samantha King is looking forward to using the iPads as they have many more benefits than books, laptops or standard computers, “It’s good that it’s electronic. You can have a lighter bag instead of carrying around heavy textbooks and there are heaps of apps you can use”.

As Mr Delaney explained, there are literally thousands of educational apps available for the iPad, allowing for more creative and innovative learning, presenting teachers and students with a range of unique opportunities in the years ahead.

Academic Assembly AcclaimWe gathered on Friday, 8th February, to celebrate the success of the 2012 Higher School Certificate High Achievers. These students excelled in their studies in 2012 and deserve to be recognised for such marvellous outcomes. The results from the 2012 HSC and the University Admission Index show that Trinity Catholic College Lismore continues, to produce students who achieve high results. Trinity gained 96 entries (from 44 individual students) on the Board of Studies Distinguished Achievers’ List. This is published by the Office of the Board of Studies which recognises students who have scored 90 or greater in a course – and we also recognise these students.

One of the most prestigious Academic Awards is that presented to the Dux of the College. The Dux Award is based on the student with the highest University Admission Index Rank in the College. The 2012 Trinity Catholic College Dux was Divya Venkataraman with a UAI of 97.9. Other students who excelled at a State level were Bonnie Graham who came second in the State for Food Technology and Laura Pirlo who was ninth in the State for Music.

commissioning Mass 2013On the 18th of February 2013, over 100 students from Years 10 and 11 attended a Mass in the St John’s College Woodlawn Chapel to celebrate the induction of students into both the Social Justice Committee and the St Vincent de Paul Society Conference.

Woodlawn has a long history of student involvement in both groups, but in recent years both have been supported by outstanding numbers in Years 10 (for Social Justice) and Years 11 and 12 (for Vinnies). In 2013 Social Justice will have has 45 members, whilst Vinnies will enjoy over 80 students in the Conference. The February Commissioning Mass has traditionally been seen as a St Vincent de Paul inauguration, but the obvious correlation of the two in terms of the causes they support has seen a change to tradition in 2013.

Both groups of participating students were handed their badges by special guests from Vinnies, Julie Simpson and Helen Lockton, along with Coordinators of each group, Mrs Annette Reen and College Chaplain, Fr Paul Pidcock. Whilst the deeds of the Social Justice group have been well documented in recent issues of this magazine; in particular their outstanding support of Yodifee House Cambodia, the huge body of work of Woodlawn’s St Vincent de Paul has received less press. Ably led by the new Year 12 Executive Alex Macdade, Jessica Cairnduff, Katelyn Burns and Sam Whitelaw, students will actively participate in Buddies days held at the Ballina Pool (supporting financially disadvantaged youth), clothing collections, after school events, holiday camps and sport & recreation camps and working in the Lismore soup kitchen and the Lismore Vinnies store.

President Alex Macdade of Year 12 will lead by the mantra “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others”. She and all members of both teams will lean heavily on the traditions set for us at Woodlawn by the Marist Fathers. There will be a ‘power’ of work done for the disadvantaged and no doubt it will be carried out humbly.

The brand and strategic plan for Proclaim 2013 have both now been outlined and approved.

Please be assured that all parishes will be kept informed as we move forward on this exciting journey together. Your prayers and support will be greatly appreciated.

The SEACS team is now in place and moving throughout the diocese.

It is intended that by the end of 2013 every person in Catholic education will:• Knowtheyareapartofagreatyearofchange, growth

and development for Catholic education – and this growth cannot happen without them.

• Bringalltheirgifts,passionandtalentstothischallenge.

Embrace the New Evangelisation and be collaborative co-designers of what it means for Catholic education.

• Feelempowered, confidentand‘on fire’ for the mission of Catholic education.

• Work as one leadership group in promoting a morevibrant and engaging Catholic culture in our schools.

Proclaim then is a journey not an event. It is designed to ensure that our school communities remain authentically Catholic and centres of the New Evangelisation and that our students emerge from them as religiously articulate, practising Catholic young men and women.

The following paragraphs are taken from the document “Anointed & Sent” which clearly articulates the meaning of Evangelisation:

Evangelisation invites young people to a personal encounter with Jesus Christ through the Church. It encourages all ages to live every day of their lives as witnesses; evangelising others and the culture in which they live.

Young people are called to become agents for the new evangelisation, working in collaboration with their local community, to reach out and witness to Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Young people are to be encouraged and assisted to many and varied creative means, always seeking to build a bridge between the ancient faith and the contemporary world, between the tabernacle and the street.

¥ Joseph Ratzinger, the son of Maria and police officer Joseph Ratzinger was born on April 16, 1927, in Marktl am Inn, in south eastern Germany near the Austrian border. His early years were marked by the turbulent times in his country, as well as his faith. His adolescent years were spent in Traunstein, in the Catholic region of Bavaria. At 14, school officials enrolled his class in the Hitler Youth Movement. He left the organisation shortly after, to study for the Priesthood. In 1943 he was drafted into the army. He served for two years then deserted. In 1945 he was released from a POW camp, hitched a ride on a truck and headed home to start a new and incredible life. µ
