FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT AND THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD 2020

Christmas is about the arrival of Jesus into human life, and the centrality of his truth, and its unequaled impact on all who believe in it.

No wonder we celebrate this reality with all the joyous exuberance we can summon up. Next to this certainty all the additional enjoyments that have become part of the customs of this feast, which we rightly look forward to and relish each year, are of a different and lesser order. (We can enjoy them all the more if we place Christ where he belongs in our lives: at the very top.) Clement of Alexandria (c. 150-c. 215), a Father of the Church, is someone of importance in our religion, even though we know very little about his life and only three of his works, and some fragments, have survived. He effectively engaged the philosophers of his city, then the intellectual center of the Roman empire, by defending the Catholic faith in a winning, wide-ranging style. (Robert Payne, author of deft profiles of the Fathers, remarked that “Clement has the happy faculty of rarely sticking to the point. At the sight of the smallest hare running across the landscape, Clement is immediately after it.”) Clement had something splendid to say about the importance of Jesus that is very apt to keep in mind at Christmas:

In our sickness we need a Savior, in our wanderings a guide, in our blindness someone to show us the light, in our thirst the fountain of living water that quenches forever the thirst of those who drink from it. We dead people need life, we sheep need a shepherd, we children need a teacher, the whole world needs Jesus!

The Dutch priest Henri Nouwen (1932-1996), author of The Wounded Healer, The Return of the Prodigal Son and many other books, was one of the most popular spiritual writers of modern times. During his teaching career at Harvard and for years after, he was an unresting searcher for belonging and for spiritual truth. He spent much of his life in the Americas: a year with the Trappists of the Genesee monastery in New York, living with missioners among the poor of Bolivia and Peru, and finally serving as the resident chaplain for the L’Arche Daybreak community in Toronto, where developmentally disabled people and their counselors share their lives. Each year

during the Christmas season Nouwen returned to the Netherlands to be with his extended family. Toward the end of his life, what he saw about the state of the Church there distressed him. One of his relatives’ families would celebrate New Year’s day by going to Mass and then having dinner. Nouwen noted that

For me, it’s an annual confrontation with the tragedy of Dutch Catholicism. The husband and wife are deeply believing people. But for the children, God and Church have lost all meaning, and the grandchildren know nothing at all about the story of God’s love. Sadly, children will again accuse their parents. They will no longer say, “Why did you force us to go to church?” but, “Why did you never tell us about Jesus?”

It is something Father Nouwen will never be accused of. Here is something he once wrote about today’s great feast:

O God of love, you gave us life and sent us your only Son to be with us at all times and in all places, so that we never have to feel lost in our struggles but always can trust that he walks with us. Help us to know that Christmas is the renewed invitation not to be afraid and to let you —whose love is greater than our own hearts and minds can comprehend—be our companion!

May all of you enjoy a most blessed Christmas.

PARISH OFFICE AND MEETINGS ALL PARISH BUILDINGS REMAIN CLOSED to in-person meetings of any kind. Due to increased health and safety concerns, all MINISTRY MEETINGS SHOULD CONTINUE VIRTUAL ONLY and all OUTDOOR GROUP GATHERINGS are currently NOT permitted anywhere on parish grounds. For health and safety considerations, in-person visits to the Parish Office/Rectory are limited. Walk-ins are not currently permissible. If you need in person assistance, you must CALL the Parish Office/Rectory at 201-2610148 Monday thru Friday from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm for an appointment. Most parish office business (baptism, wedding and funeral arrangements, sacramental records and Mass intention requests etc.) can be easily accomplished with our staff by phone, email (office @sjcnj.org) or postal mail (105 Harrison St., New Milford, NJ 07646) or the lock-box outside the rectory. PUBLIC MASS SAFETY GUIDELINES

ARRIVE EARLY (20 minutes before Mass) and safely line up

outside. Doors will open 15 minutes before Mass. WEAR A

FACE MASK at all times while on the parish campus (both

indoors and outside) and maintain SAFE SOCIAL

DISTANCING (6 feet).

ENTER via Elm St. or Harrison St. doors ONLY. (Grand St.

entrance is handicapped-access only).

HAND SANITIZER is available and must be used upon

entering and exiting.

You will be seated in alternating pews.

No physical contact during the Sign of Peace.

COMMUNION will be distributed to one entire side of the

church and then the other starting from a single, socially

distanced line up the center aisle.

When processing forward to receive, keep mask on and

follow the blue floor markings.

PAUSE AT THE SOLID BLUE LINE, and WAIT until a priest/

minister is available.

Holy Communion is permitted in the HAND ONLY.

Once the consecrated host is placed in your hand, step to the

side, remove your mask briefly to consume, then

immediately reposition your mask and return to your seat.

AFTER FINAL BLESSING remain in your pew until a

minister instructs you to move; exit the pew when prompted

and proceed directly outside onto the campus.

No private prayer or gathering after Sunday Mass is permitted

to allow for church cleaning.
