SAFRANIN AUSTRALIA / NEW ZEALAND
by Stéphane ABRIAL Senior Executive Vice President, International and Public Affairs
Safran’s history in Australia and New Zealand reaches back to the 1970s. Some 40 years later, 4 Safran companies are operating in the region, in our three core businesses: aerospace, defence and security. In the aerospace sector, over 750 of our helicopter engines are now in service and Safran is the only engine manufacturer in this region with its own local technical support facilities. In addition, more than 400 CFM56® engines have been chosen by 17 airlines including Qantas Airways and its subsidiary Jetstar, and Virgin Australia. We also supply optronics and inertial navigation systems to the armed forces for air, land and naval applications (helicopter, surface ship and submarine).
Within our security portfolio, Federal and State police forces and a growing list of international airports have chosen our explosive detection equipment and our biometric identification systems (automated fingerprint identification or facial recognition).Over the years, we have built up a relationship of mutual trust with our customers and partners, based on the quality and reliability of our high-tech products and services, on the local support we provide and on the exceptional relationships established by our respective teams. In the coming years, we will expand our partnerships with our customers, continue to invest in local projects and personnel, and actively contribute to the development of the regional industry.

Turbomeca supports the MTR390 and RTM 322 engines that power the Australian Army’s ARH Tiger and MRH90 helicopters, respectively. Turbomeca has also set up an RTM 322 engine production line in Sydney, Australia.
Morpho’s SmartGate automated border control system authenticates passenger identities in near real-time and is deployed across Australia and New Zealand.
Over 400 CFM56 engines are in service with Australian airlines including Qantas Airways.
Safran has been operating
in Australia, New Zealand,
New Guinea and the Pacific
Islands for nearly 40 years in
all three of its core markets:
aerospace, defence and
security. Today, we have over
200 employees in the region
in 4 companies working for
defence forces, federal, state
and local governments, airlines
and other customers.
AEROSPACESafran is a major supplier of aircraft equipment and engines in Australia and New Zealand. Turbomeca (Safran), the world leader in helicopter turbine engines, is the only turboshaft engine manufacturer with support capabilities in the region. It has provided engineering support for civil and military helicopters since 1994. From its facility at Bankstown Airport in Sydney, Turbomeca provides repair and overhaul capability to owners and operators of aircraft powered by Arriel 1, RTM 322 (MRH90) and MTR390 (ARH Tiger) engines and APU323 (Hawk) and APU329 (MRH90) auxiliary power units. This facility is a center of excellence and it offers deep maintenance solutions for the Arriel 2, Arrius 1 and Arrius 2 engines. Turbomeca Australasia covers Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and surrounding islands, a region with more than 750 engines in service. It is also a world centre of excellence for RTM 322 engines.
Safran is also one of the leading engine suppliers to Australasian airlines via CFM
International, the 50/50 joint company between Snecma (Safran) and GE. 17 operators in the region have already chosen the CFM56 engines or its successor LEAP® to power their aircraft, including Qantas Airways and its subsidiary Jetstar, and Virgin Australia.
Aircelle, Safran’s nacelle specialist, is one of the world’s largest nacelle manufacturers and provides a full range of support services to all customers in the region. For example, aircraft operated by Qantas Airways, Virgin Australia, Airnorth and Fiji Airways are all equipped with Aircelle nacelles.
Messier-Bugatti-Dowty (Safran), the world leader in aircraft landing and braking systems, has been present in the region for over 15 years and has more than 20 customers in Australia and New Zealand. Working closely with Qantas Airways and its subsidiary Jetstar, and Virgin Australia, the company provides landing gears, wheels, brakes and associated systems for both Airbus and Boeing commercial jetliners.
DEFENCESafran has operated in the Australian defence market since the 1990s providing manufacturing capabilities for a range of market leading products. Sagem (Safran) supplies and supports avionics and optronics used on major platforms such as the ARH Tiger and the MRH helicopters. The ARH Tiger helicopters deployed by the Australian Army also feature twin Turbomeca MTR390 engines, Messier-Bugatti-Dowty landing gears and the Sagem Strix sighting system.
As for the NH90 Troop lift helicopter in Australia and New Zealand, they are fitted with Sagem Inertial Reference Systems (IRS) and assembly tests, ground tests, repair and overhaul are undertaken by Sagem Australasia. Sagem also provides inertial navigation systems for Huon class coastal minehunters and Collins class submarines, as well as IRS, surveillance systems and InfraRed Search and Track (IRST) systems for other Royal Australian Navy vessels. In 2009, Sagem moved to state-of-the-art facilities in Bankstown Airport (NSW) to deliver local support of its equipment for its customers.
SECURITYSafran’s security subsidiary Morpho has long operated in Australia and New Zealand (formerly known as Sagem Sécurité), providing critical biometric solutions for criminal justice, public safety, border control, detection and smart transactions markets. All Australian Federal and State police forces use Morpho’s biometric solutions to identify criminals in real time, together with CrimTrac’s National Automated Fingerprint Recognition System, one of the world’s largest fingerprint and palm print databases. Both the Australian and New Zealand Custom Services use Morpho’s facial recognition technology to give eligible travellers the option of self-processing through passport control via SmartGate automated control gates, now deployed at all major international airports in the region.
Morpho also provides a facial recognition system that helps detect multiple driving licence registrations to combat identity fraud in New South Wales. In 2011, Morpho also opened a service centre in Canberra. This 24x7 dedicated facility with top security clearance now supports key customers such as CrimTrac, the Australian Federal Police and the Australian Customs and Border Services.
