IMPORTANT!

PROPER INTRUSION PROTECTION

For proper intrusion coverage, sensors should be located at every possible point of entry to a home or commercial premises. This would include anyskylights that may be present, and the upper windows in a multi-level building.

In addition, we recommend that radio backup be used in a security system sothat alarm signals can still be sent to the Customer Care Center in the event

that the telephone lines are out of order (alarm signals are normally sent overthe phone lines).

EARLY WARNING FIRE DETECTION

Early warning fire detection is important in a home. Smoke and heat detectorshave played a key role in reducing fire deaths in the United States. With regardto the number and placement of smoke/heat detectors, we subscribe to therecommendations contained in the National Fire Protection Association'sNational Fire Alarm Code (NFPA 72). These recommendations can be found onpage 34 of this manual.

This manual is a step-by-step guide that will acquaint you with the system'sfeatures and benefits. It defines the components and their functions, describestheir operation, and provides clear step-by-step instructions for normal andemergency procedures. Keep this manual in a convenient place so that you canrefer to it as necessary.

Congrat ulations on your ownership of a n ADT P ar titioned S ecurity S ystem. You'vemade a wise decision in choosing it, for it represents the latest in security protectiontechnology t oday, a nd millions of premises a re protected by ADT syst ems.

This sy stem provides: Three forms of protection: bur glar y, fire* a nd emerg ency. At least one touchpad which provides control of system operation and displays

the systems status Various sensors for perimeter a nd int erior burglar y protection Sm oke or combustion detectors* designed to provide early w a rning in case of fire.

Burglary Protection

There are four modes of burglary protection: St ay, Night-St ay , Awa y, Inst an t.STAY: ar ms perimeter zones only and entry delay is onINS TANT: sa me a s S TAY, except ent ry delay is offNIG HT-STAY: a rms perimeter zones an d selected interior zones; entry dela y onAWAY: ar ms perimeter a nd a ll interior zones, ent ry dela y is on

You can B YPASS selected zones w hile leaving th e rest of the system a rmed. CH IME mode alerts you to the opening of protected doors a nd w indows wh ile thesystem is disarmed.

Fire Protection Fire protection is a lwa ys a ctive (if installed) an d a n a larm sounds if a fire

condit ion is det ected If necessary, you can m anu ally initiat e a fire alarm us ing the touchpad. Refer to the Fire Alarm System section for information regarding fire protection,

smoke detectors and planning emergency exit routes.

Security Codes You were assigned a 4-digit security code during system installation. Use your security code when a rming a nd disarm ing the system, and w hen

performing other system functions. Other users can be assigned different security codes. User codes can be a ssigned different a uthority levels, wh ich define wh ich syst em

functions a part icular user can perform.

Zones and Partitions

The system sensing devices have been assigned to various zones, which arespecific area s of protection (e.g., front door, kitchen w indow, etc.).

Zone numbers are displayed a t t he touchpad w hen an ala rm or trouble conditionoccurs on a sensor.

P ar titions provide two independent a reas of protection, w ith ea ch partit ionconta ining a group of zones tha t can be a rmed an d disarm ed without a ffectingother zones or users.

P ar titioned systems can include a common zone ar ea, which is an a rea sha red byusers of both par tit ions (such a s a lobby in a building ).

P art ition identificat ion: 1 = part ition 1; 2 = partit ion 2; 3 = common zone.

Arming, Step-Arming and Disarming Burglary Protection The system must be armed before the burglary protection; can sense intrusions. To arm y our system , enter your user code followed by th e desired arm ing key. You can also use the step-ar ming key to a rm t he system, if programmed. To disar m t he syst em, enter y our user code then press th e [OFF] key. Step-ar ming, if progra mmed, lets you use a function key to arm the syst em in one

of three modes by simply pressing the key repeatedly, where:first press a rms S TAY; second press a rms N IG HT-STAY; third press ar msAWAY.

Alarms When an ala rm occurs, both t he touchpad an d external sounders will sound, a nd

the touchpad w ill display t he zone(s) causing th e ala rm. If your system is connected to a Cust omer Ca re Center, an a larm m essage will

also be sent. To stop the ala rm sounding, simply disarm the syst em.

Memory of Alarm When an alarm condition occurs, the touchpad displays the number(s) of the

zone(s) that caused the problem, an d displays t he type of alarm . The message rema ins display ed even a fter disarm ing the system, but can be

cleared with another off sequence.

Phone Access If included, a phone module permits you to access the syst em via a t ouch-tone

phone, either on-premises or by call-in w hen a w ay . You can r eceive synth esized voice messa ges over th e telephone rega rding t he

sta tus of the security syst em. You can a rm a nd disa rm th e system an d perform most function comma nds

remotely via the telephone, with voice confirmation provided after each commandentry.

Complete informa tion regarding t he use of this feature is provided in a separa teman ual entit led Phone Access User 's Guide th at is supplied with the voice

module.Paging Feature

If programmed, up to four pagers can aut omatically display certain syst emcondit ions as t hey occur in your syst em.

The display consists of code numbers that indicate the type of condition that hasoccurred.

Function Keys The A, B , C, an d D keys on the touchpa d can be progra mmed to perform

various functions. Functions include: activate a P an ic ala rm; ar m the system; provide step arming;

sw itch lights on/off; send a messa ge to a pa ger; display Time/Da te; st a rt a Ma cro

Scheduling Your system can be programmed to automatically perform certain functions (e.g.,arm the system) at a predetermined time each day.

Your touchpads allow you to control all system functions. The touchpads feature thefollowing: A telephone st yle (digital) keypad Liquid Crysta l Display (LCD ) wh ich shows the na ture an d location of all

occurrences B uilt-in sounder which will sound during a larm s a nd t roubles. The sounder a lso

"beeps" during certain syst em functions a nd w hen depressing any of the keys (toa cknow ledge the key press).

Ba cklighting of the LCD d isplay w indows. B acklighting turns on when entering the

premises through a ny a ssigned entr y/exit door, or when a ny t ouchpa d key ispressed. This featur e is helpful when a touchpad is located in a dimly lit a rea.

IMPORTANT: If the touchpad beeps rapidly upon entering the premises, it indicat estha t a n ala rm ha s occurred during your absence and a n intruder may st il l be on thepremises. LEAVE IM MED IATEL Y and C ONTACT THE P OLICE from a nea rby sa felocation.

There are tw o basic types of touchpads wh ich a re functionally t he sam e, but theyha ve different t ypes of displays.

Custom En glish Display 2-line Custom E nglish display touchpad s feature a 2-line,32-chara cter alphanum eric LCD which can display systemmessages in friendly English. These touchpads can also beprogram med w ith cust om zone descriptors. To access thekeys on the touchpad, sim ply open the sw ing-down d oor.

14. READY INDICATOR: (GREEN) Lit whenthe system is read y to be ar med (no fault spresent). While the syst em is disa rmed, t hisindicator w ill go on a nd off as protectionzones are closed and opened.

15. ARMED INDICATOR: (RED ) Lit w hen thesystem has been armed.

16. INTERNAL SOUNDER: The b uilt -in

sounder mimics the alarm sounder duringala rms, and w ill a lso "beep" dur ing cer ta insystem functions.

17. FUNCTION KEYS: Keys A, B, C, D ma yha ve been progra mmed for a var iety offunctions, including pa nic (emergency)functions. For details, see the Fu nction Keys section.

IMPORTANT! When entering codes an d commands, sequential key depressions must be mad e

Your system ha s preset time delays, known a s exit delay a nd entry delay .

Exit delay gives you time to leave through the designat ed exit door without sett ingoff an a larm. E xit delay begins immediately after a rming your system in anyarm ing mode and C ustom Display touchpads display th e message You May ExitNow. When You may exit now disa ppear s, the system is fully ar med. If programmed, aslow beeping will sound throughout the exit delay period.

Exit Delay Restart. If you w ish to open the entry /exit door to let someone in aft er a rmingSTAY, you can re-sta rt the exit delay a t a ny t ime simply press the [ ] key , then let tha tperson in. This avoids having to disar m the system a nd then re-ar m it a gain.

En try D elays give you time to disarm t he system wh en you re-enter through thedesignated entra nce door. B ut you must disa rm t he system before the entry delayperiod ends, or an a lar m w ill occur. The touchpad beeps during th e ent ry delayperiod, reminding you to disarm the system. There are two entry delays (ifprogram med). The first is for your prima ry ent ra nce and t he second ca n be used fora secondary entra nce, where a longer delay is required to wa lk to the touchpad t odisarm the sys tem.

You can a lso arm the system w ith no entry delay a t a ll by using the INSTANTa rming m ode. This mode provides grea ter security w hile on th e premises or w hileaway for extended periods of time.

Whenever you a rm t he syst em, th e exit delay begins. I f a n ent ry/exit door or interiorzone is fault ed wh en th e exit delay end s (e.g., exit door left open), the sy stem soundsan a larm a nd sta rts t he entry delay timer. If you disarm th e system before the entrydelay ends, the alarm sound stops and th e message "CANCEL ED ALARM" or "C A" isdisplay ed on th e touchpad, a long w ith a zone number indica ting th e faulted zone. Nomessage is sent t o the Cust omer Ca re Center.

To clear the exit alarm condition, the open zone must be made inta ct; to clear thedisplay , enter your code plus OFF.

If you do not disar m th e system before the entr y delay ends, a nd a n entr y/exit door orinterior zone is still open, the a larm sound continues a nd a n " exit a larm " m essage issent to the Cu stomer Ca re Center. The message " "E XIT ALARM" or "E A" is display edon the touchpad, along wit h a zone number indicating the fa ulted zone. To stop theala rm, t he system m ust be disa rmed (your code plus OFF); to clear the display, enteryour code plus OFF a second t ime.An exit ala rm a lso results if an ent ry/exit door or interior zone is fault ed wit hin tw ominutes a fter the end of the exit delay.

Your system may have been programmed for this feature to minimize false alarms sent to the CustomerCare Center. Ask your installer if "Exit Alarm" is active in your system. If so, check this box.

Before arming your system, all protected doors, windows and other protection zonesmust be closed or bypassed, otherwise the touchpad will display a "Not Rea dy"message.

Use the READY key to display all fa ulted zones, ma king it ea sier for you to identifyand secure any open zone.

When bypa ssing zones: Your system m ay ha ve been set so tha t a rming w ill not be possible if more tha n

one zone is bypa ssed (check with your inst a ller). The system must be disarmed before you can bypass zones. B ypassed zones ar e unprotected and w ill not cause a n a larm if violat ed. The syst em w ill not allow fire zones to be bypassed. Zones are aut omatically unbypassed wh en the system is disar med.

Silencing LowBattery Warning

Tones at theTouchpad

You can silence the touchpads warning tones by pressing the OFF key ,but the touchpad's low ba ttery messa ge display w ill remain on as areminder that you have a low battery condition in one or more of yourwireless sensors. When you replace the w eak ba ttery with a fresh one,the sensor sends a " good bat tery" signal to the control as soon a s thesensor is a ctiva ted (opening/closing of d oor, w indow, etc.), cau sing thelow batt ery display to turn off. If the sensor is not a ctivated, the displaywill aut omatically clear wit hin a pproximately 1 hour.

Ea ch wireless sensor in your syst em ha s a 9-volt or 3-volt bat tery. Thesystem detects a low bat tery in w ireless sensors, including smokedetectors, the persona l emergency tra nsmitt er, and the portablewireless touchpad an d displays a low bat tery message*. (A low bat teryin a portable wireless touchpad is detected as soon as one of its keys ispressed, an d displayed as 00 .). Battery-operated smoke detectors witha low bat tery a lso emit a single "chirp" sound approximately onceevery 2030 second s.Alkaline batteries provide a minimum of 1 year of operation, and inmost un its a nd a pplica tions, provide 24 years of service. 3-volt lithiumbat teries provide up to 4 or more year s of operat ion. Actua l bat tery lifewill depend on the environment in which the sensor is used, thenumber of signals tha t the tra nsmitt er in the sensor has ha d to send,and the specific type of sensor. Factors such as humidity, high or low temperatures or large sw ings in tempera ture, may a ll lead to thereduction of actua l batt ery life in an inst alla tion.

Routine Care Treat the component s of your security system a s you would any otherelectrica l equipment. D o not sla m sensor-protected doors or win dows.

Keep dust from accumulating on th e touchpad an d a ll protectivesensors, particularly on motion sensors and smoke detectors. The touchpad a nd sensors should be cleaned car efully with a dry soft

3 . I f th is does not remedy the problem, there may s t i ll be smoke in thedetector. Clear it by fanning the detector for about 30 seconds.When t he problem ha s been corrected, clear t he display byentering your code and pressing the OFF key.

Should you become aw are of a fire emergency before your smoke orheat detectors sense the problem, go to your nearest t ouchpad an dman ually initiat e an a larm by pressing the pan ic key assigned forFIRE emergency for 2 seconds. 5 . Try the door. I f the door is hot , check youralt erna te escape route. If t he door is cool, open itcautiously. Be prepared to slam the door if smokeor heat rushes in.

6 . When smoke is present , craw l on the ground. Donot wa lk upright, since smoke rises an d ma yovercome you. Clear er air is n ear t he floor.

WARNING! THE LIMITATIONS OF THIS ALARM SYSTEMWhile this system is an a dvanced design security system, it does not offer gua ran teed protection against burglary or otheremergency. Any alarm system, whether commercial or residential, is subject to compromise or failure to warn for avariety of reasons. For example: Intruders may gain access through unprotected openings or have the technical sophis t icat ion to bypass an alarm

sensor or disconnect a n ala rm w arn ing device. Intrus ion detectors (e .g. pass ive infrared detectors ), smoke detectors , and ma ny other sens ing devices wil l not work

without power. Battery operated devices will not work without batteries, with dead batteries, or if the batteries arenot put in properly. Devices powered solely by AC will not work if their AC power supply is cut off for any reason,however briefly.

S ignals sent by wireless t ransmit ters may be blocked or ref lected by metal before they reach the alarm receiver. Evenif the signal path has been recently checked during a weekly test, blockage can occur if a metal object is moved intothe path .

A user may not be able to reach a panic or emergency button quickly enough.
