SAFETY IN THE CHEMISTRY LAB
• What is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?
• designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with a particular substance.
Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
• MSDS's include any safety issue such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, andspill/leak procedures.
• These are of particular use if a spill or other accident occurs.
Hazard Identification label
• Summarizes risks related to health, flammability and reactivity.
• A number scale indicates the level of risk.
MSDS
• Every company that manufactures or distributes hazardous chemicals in the United States must prepare a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
• Mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in their Hazard Communications Standard 29CFR 1910.1200.
• This standard is commonly referred to as the Right-To-Know Law.
What items or formats are required on an MSDS?• ALL U.S. MSDS's must includde the
items found on OSHA’s Form 17.• You can include more items than OSHA
requires. • The
American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has a 16-part standard format which encompasses the areas given in the OSHA standard and adds a few more such as toxicology.
• In fact, OSHA now recommends using the ANSI format!
MSDS QUIZ
• MSDS sheets must be written in:• A OSHA Form 174 format• B ANSI format• C EPA format• D Any format, but must contain the
information found in OSHA Form 174.• E Any format; there are no specific
requirements for content.
OSHA’s Form 17• Chemical Identity• Section I. Manufacturer's Name and
Contact Information• II. Hazardous Ingredients/Identity
Information• III. Physical/Chemical
Characteristics• IV. Fire and Explosion Hazard Data• V. Reactivity Data• VI. Health Hazard Data• VII. Precautions for Safe Handling
and Use• VIII. Control Measures
MSDS QUIZ
• MSDS's should be consulted:• A In case of fire or explosion• B Before working with a chemical• C In the event of a spill• D To prepare risk assessments• E All of the above

manufacturer?• A (201) 796-7100• B 911• C (800) MSD-S100• D You must call directory
assistance and ask for it.• E (800) REA-GENT2.

knownC. Is considered stable at normal
pressures and temperatures.D. Can spontaneously detonate, even
when stored properly.E. Is a volatile gas that should be stored
in pressurized cylinders.
