FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Sikes named SafeState Director TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Mar. 30, 2015) – Interim Director John Sikes has been named executive director of the UA SafeState program at The University of Alabama. “John has done an excellent job in the critical role of interim director and he deserves our deep appreciation,” said Dr. Craig Edelbrock, dean of the college of continuing studies. “I am confident, that with the support of our dedicated employees, this will be a smooth and successful transition.” Sikes began his career with UA Safestate in 1988 as technical manager for environmental programs. During his long successful tenure with Safestate, Sikes has served in various roles and has been instrumental in course development and program management. Sikes assumed the role of interim executive director in 2013 and has served concurrently as the associate director for environmental programs. “It is with the support of such an excellent team that we have been able to make this program a success,” said Sikes “I look forward to leading this team as we continue to find innovative ways to extend our training and services to companies across the state.” Sikes earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Alabama and a master’s degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He also holds certifications in asbestos inspection, management planning, lead inspection, risk assessment and is a certified indoor environmental consultant. Sikes named SafeState Director

Sikes began his career with UA Safestate in 1988 as technical manager for environmental programs. UA SafeState, a division of the University of Alabama College of Continuing studies is designed to promote occupational and environmental safety and health through university-based programs of continuing education and career enhancement. Environmental Programs provides cost-effective consultation to Alabama businesses to assist them in compliance with air, water and hazardous waste regulations while the Occupational Safety and Health program provides confidential health and safety consultation to businesses within Alabama.
