“Build Your Competitive Advantage!” By Lynne Jensen-NelsonThursday, January 23rd 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm“The only sustainable competitive advantage is the ability to learn faster than the competition.” It is more important than ever to stand out in a highly competitive marketplace! Today’s consumers have distinct buying expectations. They also have more information available to them than ever before which creates market confusion and negatively impacts/slows down the buying process. Attendees will leave this session with immediately applicable skills and strategies to improve their sales process and enhance customer experience. Learn how to:• Capitalize on influential consumer demographics.• Understand the 5 most common sales objections (HINT: it’s NOT always about $$$).• Examine the impact of human bias on decision-making.• Create clear points of differentiation to set you apart from the competition (value > cost).• Deliver solutions that meet the changing needs of your customers.
Lynne Jensen-Nelson is an award-winning business leader with 2 decades of experience in the home improvement, new construction and interior design industries. She has earned numerous distinctions including the Platinum Award for Distinguished Sales Leadership. As the founder of Conversion-omics© she works with builders, product suppliers and professional organizations like NARI, NKBA, and NAHB helping them establish effective marketing strategies, create successful sales processes and enhance their overall customer experience. Today she is here to help us sell more, sell faster and create an efficient sales process that your customers crave. Learn more at www.conversion-omics.com.
“My Plans and Concerns for 2020” Dealer Panel Discussion Facilitated By Craig Webb (With Breakfast)Thursday, January 23rd 8:15 am – 10:00 amNo two dealers’ objectives for the year are exactly the same, but rarely are they completely different from top to bottom. That means you can benefit from speaking to and hearing from other dealers on the issues that matter most to you and them in 2020. Craig Webb, ProSales’ longtime editor and now president of Webb Analytics, will assist by telling you what he’s hearing from dealers across the U.S., as well as by leading a discussion among your fellow NLA members. Craig Webb formed Webb Analytics in September 2018 after spending a dozen years as editor-in-chief of ProSales, where he won numerous national writing and editing awards and visited dealers in 49 states. Webb Analytics provides insights, data, and connections to help construction supply insiders and investors make better strategic and tactical decisions.
This beneficial peer discussion WITH BREAKFAST is only $15 per person and is available to members only. Breakfast will be served from 8:15 am – 8:45 am. The seminar will start at 8:45 am and go until 10:00 am. Tickets must be ordered in advance.

EXHIBITSWednesday, January 22 3:00 pm – 6:30 pmThursday, January 23 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
With approximately 100 exhibit booths displayed over two days, you’ll have plenty to see and do on the exhibit floor. See and touch the products first-hand. Speak to professional sales representatives about what they can offer, how your business can benefit, and develop long-lasting partnerships with the best in the industry!
PRODUCT DEMONSTRATIONS Sometimes seeing first-hand how products work or how they’re installed offers a perspective that seeing them in a catalog or displayed on a table just can’t do. And that’s exactly what these product demonstrations are for! A select number of exhibitors will give a 15-minute overview and demonstration of their product right on the exhibit floor during trade show hours. Get an up close and personal look at what these suppliers will be revealing.
Demonstrating companies, products, exact times and the demo location will be established as the conventions approach. Information will also be prominently highlighted in the onsite show program AND announced over the speakers so you can make sure to attend them all!
CONTESTS, DRAWINGS, AND FUN Who says you can’t have a little fun doing business? NLA is rewarding two lucky people with a HUGE GRAND PRIZE, while many of the exhibitors are offering up individual drawings for amazing prizes! Participation is easy and chances are good you’ll be leaving triumphant.
Contests & Drawings on the Exhibit Floor:Sponsor Game Card Contest (One $500 drawing each day. Must be present to win. Check schedule for drawing times) Prize Drawings at Individual Exhibit Booths (Continuous during entire convention) Best Booth Contest for Exhibitors (Announced at the Awards Dinner on Wednesday)NLA Booth Games and Wild West Themed Fun! (Continuous during entire convention)
NETWORKING RECEPTION Wednesday, January 22 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm
The Networking Reception is held right in the middle of the exhibit floor on Wednesday evening. It’s where business is still in full swing and lumberyard professionals can rub elbows with exhibitors and sponsors in a relaxed atmosphere. Continue doing business or find other common interests to talk about with those around you.
Light hors d’oeuvres, free keg beer* and soda will be provided to everyone at no cost! And remember to listen for the Grand Prize $500 cash winner during the reception (at 5:30 pm) – it could be YOU! *Cash bar available for other libations.
AWARDS MIXER, DINNER, PRESENTATION & ENTERTAINMENT Wednesday, January 22 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
After a busy day of seminars, exhibits, product demos and prize drawings, reward yourself with “dinner and a show” at the annual Awards Dinner - another opportunity for dealers, exhibitors, guests and staff to gather together on a winter evening without ever leaving the building. Starting with FREE wine & beer during the Mixer, we’ll then serve up a delicious plated dinner while enjoying the awards presentation and brief NLA business. Wrap up the evening with some laughs provided by ComedySportz, a 6-person team that will conduct an improvisation match, complete with audience participation! Cost for all of this is only $35 per person.
Tickets must be ordered in advance.

“Sales Success on Purpose ” By Rick DavisThursday, February 27th 12:00 pm – 2:45 pmAuthor and sales training expert for the building materials industry, Rick Davis, will introduce you to new concepts to create sales on purpose. You will learn why sales results are not the best measure of performance, how to objectively evaluate the quality of a sales call, and advanced concepts in time and calendar management. This is a program for serious students of sales and sales management. You’ll leave energized with new thoughts and the ability to measure the sales activities that produce predictable future sales results.
Rick Davis is the leading sales expert for the construction industry. He is the owner of Building Leaders, Inc., a Chicago-based sales training company devoted exclusively to the construction industry, and is an award-winning sales columnist for ProSales magazine, LBM Journal and the author of The Sales Secret.
During his career, Rick has delivered over 1000 presentations and consulted with industry manufacturers and dealers in 42 states and six Canadian provinces. His methodology and processes transform sales organizations and empower salespeople to higher levels of success. His common-sense method for effective selling is a message you will want to hear.
EDUCATION“My Plans and Concerns for 2020 ” Dealer Panel Discussion Facilitated By Craig Webb Thursday, February 27th 9:30 am – 11:00 amNo two dealers’ objectives for the year are exactly the same, but rarely are they completely different from top to bottom.
This beneficial peer discussion is FREE to attend and available to NLA members only.
“Trends in the LBM Industry” By Craig WebbThursday, February 27th 12:00 pm – 1:15 pmWhat are America’s best lumberyards doing today to separate themselves from the competition? What are the big boxes and biggest dealers focusing on these days that represent the greatest threat to you? What products and services are builders increasingly likely to ask of you in the next few years? Craig Webb, ProSales’ longtime editor and now president of Webb Analytics, travels the country to get answers to those and other key questions. He’ll tell you which trends he’s seeing represent the biggest opportunities for your future success.
Women in the LBM IndustryThursday, February 27th 5:45 pm – 6:15 pmWomen have always been part of LBM businesses, but their roles are expanding. At the 2020 Expo South, NLA will host a casual Women in the LBM Industry Meet and Greet. This first, kick-off gathering is intended to bring women together from both the dealer and supplier side to meet each other and build a professional networking community that can be used year-round for professional growth and support. Meeting location to be announced onsite. Watch for signage or ask an NLA staff member.

“Tricks for Recruiting Talent in a Tight Labor Market ” By Kyle BrussThursday, February 27th 1:30 pm – 2:45 pmIt’s no secret that the labor market locally and nationally favors the job seeker and finding great talent is an ongoing challenge for most HR pros. Join Kyle Bruss, Director of Talent Acquisition at Talent Plus, Inc. for a session on best practices, tips and a few tricks for recruiting talent in a tight labor market.
Key Takeaways:• Discover tools used to attract quality candidates.• How to set your company apart from the competition.• Learn common hiring mistakes and how to avoid them.
Kyle Bruss joined Talent Plus in 1998 and obsesses over finding talented candidates for the company. Bruss also works as a senior consultant with several clients in their recruitment, selection and organizational development efforts. His work encompasses initiatives that include mission and vision development, recruitment, selection, team development, one-on-one coaching and management development.
Membership Meeting & Breakfast with Keynote, Coach John CookFriday, February 28th 7:45 am – 9:45 amJoin us for breakfast, the annual association membership meeting, and inspirational keynote speaker, John Cook!
The philosophy of John Cook can be summarized in two simple words: Dream Big. When John Cook took over the reins of the Nebraska volleyball program in 2000, the challenge facing him was daunting. He was replacing one of the sport’s legendary coaches, Terry Pettit. Cook, who left an emerging volleyball power in Wisconsin, had his own vision for Nebraska volleyball. He saw a program that had even more potential to grow. Join us for the Membership Breakfast and hear Coach Cook’s stories of leading his team to NCAA Championships and how the philosophies, beliefs and values found in successful coaches parallel those found in successful business leaders.
This event is only $15 per person to attend. Breakfast will be served from 7:45 am – 8:15 am. The association will hold a brief annual membership meeting from 8:15 am – 8:45 am and the keynote speaker will begin at 8:45 am and go until approximately 9:45 am. Tickets must be ordered in advance.
Project Management With a Focus on Special Orders & Inventory Management

This program’s agenda includes:• Project Management - Learn how to

EXHIBITS Thursday, February 27 3:00 pm – 6:30 pmFriday, February 28 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
With rows upon rows of exhibit booths displayed over two days, you’ll have plenty to see and do on the exhibit floor. See and touch the products first-hand. Speak to professional sales representatives about what they can offer, how your business can benefit, and develop long-lasting partnerships with the best in the industry!
PRODUCT DEMONSTRATIONS Sometimes seeing first-hand how products work or how they’re installed offers a perspective that seeing them in a catalog or displayed on a table just can’t match. That’s exactly what these product demonstrations are for!
Contests & Drawings on the Exhibit Floor:• Sponsor Game Card Contest (One $500 drawing each day. Must be present to win. Check schedule for drawing times) • Prize Drawings at Individual Exhibit Booths (Continuous during entire convention) • Best Booth Contest for Exhibitors (Announced at the Awards Dinner on Thursday)• NLA Booth Games and Wild West Themed Fun! (Continuous during entire convention)
NETWORKING RECEPTION Thursday, February 27 5:00 pm – 6:30 pm
The Networking Reception is held right in the middle of the exhibit floor on Thursday evening.
AWARDS MIXER, DINNER, PRESENTATION & ENTERTAINMENT Thursday, February 27 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm
After a busy day of seminars, exhibits, product demos and prize drawings, reward yourself with “dinner and a show” at the NEW Awards Dinner - another opportunity for dealers, exhibitors, guests and staff to gather together on a winter evening without ever leaving the building. Starting with FREE wine & beer during the Mixer, we’ll then serve up a delicious plated dinner while enjoying the awards presentation. Wrap up the evening with some chuckles, laughs, and snorts - provided by the Amazing Arthur Fratelli, a local comedian, mentalist, and entertainer! Cost for all of this is only $35 per person.
Tickets must be ordered in advance.
