Priorities at the Polls By Most Reverend Joseph F. Naumann
As Catholics approach the polls, we are asked to weigh many important issues. The U.S. bishops have reaffirmed
that “the threat of abortion remains our preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself, because it takes
place within the sanctuary of the family, and because of the number of lives destroyed.” While they did warn us
not to “dismiss or ignore other serious threats to human life and dignity such as racism, the environmental crisis,
poverty, and the death penalty,” they did give priority to upholding and defending our brothers’ and sisters’ most
basic right—to live.
Abortion tragically ends someone’s life when he or she is most vulnerable and most in need of loving protection.
Abortion is an intrinsic evil, meaning that it is never permitted or morally justified, regardless of individual
circumstances or intentions. The personal and societal consequences of attacks against human life, whether at its
earliest stages or at its final stages, are all the more serious because most often they are “carried out in the very
heart of and with the complicity of the family—the family which by its nature is called to be the ‘sanctuary of
life.’” This is the place where a person should be most loved, cherished, and protected.
Catholics are called to defend human life wherever it is threatened and stand up for human dignity wherever it is
violated. The enormous number of human lives destroyed by abortion is one factor that elevates its importance.
The most recent available data indicates over 2,000 children per day die from abortion in the United States. Since
abortion was legalized in 1973, over 61 million children have been killed—and untold numbers of women and
men suffer in the aftermath.
The tragedy of abortion is also distinct in that it is currently legal to directly and intentionally take the life of an
innocent human being. Current laws in our country fail to protect the lives of unborn children. Our highest Court
does not recognize children in their mothers’ wombs as persons and claims that abortion is a constitutional right.
Further, many political leaders work actively to increase access to abortion. Some falsely describe it as health care
and even as a basic human right.
People of good will must boldly stand up against this intrinsic evil, especially when it is occurring on a massive
scale, implemented in law and funded, in some instances, by the government. As believers and citizens inspired by
the Gospel and guided by the shepherds of our Church, we must do what we can to end violence in the womb, to
ensure that unborn children are fully recognized and protected by our laws, and to support mothers and fathers in
embracing life.
Archbishop Naumann is Archbishop of Kansas City, Kansas and Chair of the USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When the fathers of the Second Vatican Council met to discuss the sacrament of penance, they were required
to draw up a new rite, including several forms. The hot button for debate was so-called “general absolution,”
by which a penitent could be absolved of sin without confessing to a priest. This was a difficult debate,
compounded by widely varying traditions in both East and West. Some were surprised to learn that the Holy
See had already given permission, during the First and Second World Wars, for this form. In 1944 the Vatican
issued a decree saying this form was valid under extreme conditions, which bishops in mission lands and Latin
America took as a kind of “blanket permission.”
Thus, the fathers of the Council were alarmed to find this practice fairly widespread, not only in war, but in
peaceful places with huge numbers of faithful and few priests. Although they eventually produced a ritual
with three different forms, the forms are not considered equal, and the enriched and revised individual form is
preferred. The enrichments include a welcome of the penitent, a sign of the cross with an encouragement to
trust in God’s compassion, new texts rich in the Word of God, praise for God’s mercy, and a dismissal.

SAINT TERESA OF JESUS (1515-1582) October 15
Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you. Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of
converting Muslims and becoming a martyr. All things are passing; God never changes. But her mother’s
death when Teresa was fourteen inspired lifelong devotion to Our Lady, and Teresa entered the Carmelites,
Mary’s order, despite her father’s objections and her own fragile health. Patience gains everything. Initially,
she enjoyed her lax convent’s sociability and “busyness,” but mystical prayer and John of the Cross’s
collaboration inspired her to reform the Carmelites. Whoever has God, lacks nothing. When her ideals
encountered resistance and brought suffering, she maintained her peace—and humor. Discovered devouring
leftovers, she told her mildly scandalized nuns, “When I fast, I fast! When I eat, I eat!” To nuns demanding
less work and more prayer in the convent schedule, she retorted: “What we really need around here are fewer
starry eyes and more strong arms!” God alone is enough! The italicized sentences here are her “Breviary
Bookmark,” the simple, profound prayer of Teresa, the first woman Doctor of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER DURING COVID
Loving and faithful God, we turn to you in our doubt,
our disbelief, our fear. So much is unknown to us.
The future is uncertain. We feel helpless, alone,
worried.
Fill us with the courage to face whatever happens and
the common sense to follow public health directives
until the threat of the disease is diminished, friends
and loved ones are able to reunite, people get back to
work, and communities of faith gather once again to
sing your praise.
We pray through Christ our Lord.

Thank you for your continued generous support of our
Parish and all it’s organizations.
By now, we hope you’ve noticed our exposition on the church
grounds. October is Respect Life month. And we’re calling
attention to the abomination that is abortion. We can’t build a
culture that cherishes and protects every human life if we
don’t stand up for our most vulnerable.
The first principle of the Knights of Columbus is charity; the
love of neighbor. We express this love most powerfully by our
vigorous defense of the weak and vulnerable of society. To-
day, there is no one as defenseless as an innocent child in the
womb.
62 MILLION babies have been murdered since the 1973 Roe
v. Wade ruling. Just because something is legal in the USA,
doesn’t mean it’s lawful in the Kingdom of God.

Dear Parishioners,
Thank you for your generous support for our Split the Pot fundraising efforts. We are
seeing more support of this effort as the weeks roll on. However, it is becoming more difficult
every week to keep track of donations. Many of you are sending one check in and asking us to
spread the Split the Pot donations over several future weeks’ drawings. Other times the
instructions are not specific enough and we have to track down your intentions. Since the
winner must give to Split the Pot and make a regular donation to qualify to win, it is
imperative that we are able to determine this at the time of the drawing. We are also receiving
entries through the post office, sometimes these are late entries that do not qualify because we
have drawn the number before receiving the envelopes. . We are doing our best and are
committed to being transparent. These exceptions are causing problems, so, if at all possible
please send in one envelope and one check (cash) specifically for Split the Pot in the week it is
drawn.
Thank you for your continued generosity and understanding.
Dear Parishioners,
Our Split the Pot drawing has resumed. Here is a refresher on the
rules.
1. Only registered parishioners are eligible to win this weekly
drawing. If you are not registered with our parish, please come to our
administrative office and we will be happy to register you into Sacred
Heart Parish.
2. You must play to win. In addition to your regular weekly offering of at least five dollars,
the cost of a split the pot entry for any given week’s drawing is also five dollars. (There are
separate envelopes for split the pot). All monies for split the pot will be set aside until there is
a winner.
3. There may not be a winner every week. Each week, a name is drawn from our entire,
(whether they participate in the split the pot or not) parishioner file. If the name drawn
participated in that week’s split the pot drawing, they will win the split the pot prize.
4. If the name drawn from our entire parishioner file did not participate in split the pot that
week, the money will be rolled over to increase the next week’s jackpot.
Thank you for your continued generosity! Emmett Williamson, Business Manager
Split The Pot Drawing for the Weekend of OCTOBER 4, 2020

GARDENS OF MEMORY AND THANKSGIVING
Much has happened in these last several months with so many limitations,
especially the stay at home order and you may not have been able to attend such
momentous occasions as a special birthday, baptism, graduation, wedding or the
funeral of a loved one. A great way to memorialize these special people or events
could be to create a brick of remembrance.
Completed forms with payments can be can be mailed to the parish office,
dropped off or placed in the drop box (located in the wall outside of the parish
office).
Completed forms without payment can be sent to [email protected] or
[email protected] but will not be fully processed without
payment. Verification of design will be sent via email address.
Thanks - Paul Mikula
Why not make a lasting memory for those who have made
a special impact in your life or for those that are never
forgotten. Perhaps a brick in our memorial gardens will let
them know just how much they mean to you.

Additional Information and Definitions for Reading the Initial Scenarios:
The next page includes the initial scenarios for our grouping, which consists of:
St. Linus Parish and School
St. Patricia Parish and School
Our Lady of the Ridge Parish
Sacred Heart Parish
Key data for each parish area is also listed on the final page.
Reading the scenarios, it is important to distinguish between the words parish andchurch.
Parish = The People, Community, Organization
Church = Building; the sacred space in which we worship
A united parish has one pastor, budget, staff, Finance Council, etc. – but may have multiple churches. The assets of each parish uniting as one parish become the assets of the united parish.
A united parish may take the form of a new parish with a new name (Parish A and Parish B form New Parish C) or Parish B becoming part of Parish A. In either case, the church buildings retain their names. So Church B would still be Church B even if it becomes part of Parish A.
When a parish would have two churches, one of the churches would be designated as the parish church where the sacramental records would be kept.
As we review the scenarios, it is important for all us to do so prayerfully keeping in mind that the spiritual and structural renewal to which we are called to foster are connected. The best and most effective and efficient stewardship of our resources (structural renewal) can allow us to invest more into the ministries that directly work toward making disciples, building community and inspiring witness (spiritual renewal).
Just as Jesus asks us to pray always, He also invites us to trust always. Together, we pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit to determine how Our Lord will use existing structures to create new ones that bring more people into relationship with Him.
Your input is needed Again, these initial scenarios are conversation starters only. No decisions have been made. We are asked to provide feedback on the initial scenarios from the Archdiocese and propose alternative scenarios and configuration models.
Please come to our next parish meeting to learn more and share your feedback and input.
Page Fourteen
Initial Parish Scenarios for Discernment
Please note schools are not explicitly addressed in these scenarios. To the extent schools remain financially sustainable, St. Linus School will be the parish school of whichever configuration St. Linus Parish joins, and St. Patricia School will be the parish school of whichever configuration St. Patricia Parish joins.
Scenario 1: 1 parish, 4 churches
All four parishes unite to form a new united parish, continuing to use all four campuses. (5,862 avg. weekend Mass attendance; $3.5 million operating revenue)
Sacred Heart would serve as the central location for the united parish and formally be designated the parish church.
School governance would need to be explored in this scenario as having two parish governed schools within one parish can be challenging.
Scenario 2: 2 parishes, 4 churches
Parish 1: St. Linus and Our Lady of the Ridge unite to form one parish. Both churches continue to hold a regular Mass schedule within the united parish. (2,112; $1.63 million)
Parish 2: St. Patricia and Sacred Heart unite to form one parish. Both churches continue to hold a regular Mass schedule within the united parish. (3,750; $1.89 million)
Scenario 3: 3 parishes, 4 churches
Parish 1: St. Linus and Our Lady of the Ridge unite to form one parish. Both churches continue to hold a regular Mass schedule within the united parish. (2,112; $1.63 million)
Parish 2: St. Patricia remains in its current parish structure. (1,211; $824,000)
Parish 3: Sacred Heart remains in its current parish structure. (2,539; $1.06 million)
Scenario 4: 3 parishes, 4 churches
Parish 1: Our Lady of the Ridge and St. Patricia unite to form one parish. Both churches continue to hold a regular Mass schedule within the united parish. (2,013; $1.51 million)
Parish 2: St. Linus remains in its current parish structure. (1,310; $948,000)
Parish 3: Sacred Heart remains in its current parish structure. (2,539; $1.06 million)
Scenario 5: 3 parishes, 4 churches
Parish 1: Our Lady of the Ridge and Sacred Heart unite to form one parish. Both churches continue to hold a regular Mass schedule within the united parish. (3,341; $1.74 million)
Parish 2: St. Linus remains in its current parish structure. (1,310; $948,000)
Parish 3: St. Patricia remains in its current parish structure. (1,211; $824,000)
Scenario 6: 4 parishes, 4 churches
Each parish remains its own parish entity, working collaboratively on ministry and exploring opportunities to share staff across the parishes.

● Szkoła i parafia pw. św. Linusa ● Szkoła i parafia pw. św. Patrycji ● Parafia pw. Our Lady of the Ridge
● Parafia pw. Sacred Heart
Parafia = ludzie, środowisko, organizacja
Kościół = budynek; poświęcone miejsce kultu
Połączona parafia ma jednego proboszcza, budżet, personel, radę parafialną, itp. – ale może posiadać kilka kościołów. Majątek każdej parafii wchodzącej w skład danej parafii, staje się własnością połączonej parafii.
Połączona parafia może przyjąć nową formę oraz nową nazwę (parafia A i parafia B stanowią nową parafię C), lub parafia B może wejść w skład parafii A. W obu przypadkach nazwa kościołów pozostaje ta sama. Kościół B nadal pozostanie kościołem B nawet jeśli wejdzie w skład parafii A.
Potrzebujemy Państwa opinii Są to jedynie propozycje początkowych scenariuszy i rozmów.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
In the United States, an act of domestic violence occurs every 12 seconds
.
In the United States, each year, approximately 10 million men and women are abused
by an intimate partner.
Domestic Violence is a pattern of violent and coercive behavior exercised in an inti-
mate relationship. This can be physical abuse or more subtle forms of abuse like threats
and manipulation. We are called to minimize roadblocks facing victims and maximize the availability of re-
sources found within our Christian tradition and around our community.
Prayer for Those Affected by Domestic Violence
Dear God, there are many places and many people who do not experience Your peace. Right now, there are
people who live under the dark weight of the fear of violence right in their own homes. We pray for Your pro-
tection, and for wisdom for friends and officials to help bring protection to victims. We pray for abusers who
themselves feel powerless and confused about their relationships. We ask that You help them to find healthy
ways to work out their frustrations and to find hope without resorting to destructive impulses. God, we ask for
Your perfect peace. Amen.
