Scripture Readings

September 9, 2018

The 23rd Sunday in

Ordinary Time

1st Reading....Isaiah 35:4-7

2nd Reading ….James 2:1-5

Gospel…..Mark 7:31-37

Reliance upon the goodness of others is not only praiseworthy but also an oppor-tunity to be GRATEFUL for their generosity. Our Sacred Scriptures this weekend pri-marily reflect the GOODNESS that God has toward us. As a result we are to respond as generously as we ARE ABLE not only to Him but also to others who ARE UNABLE to be as generous to us in return. In the Book of Isaiah (35:4-7) God is clearly the divine Benefactor to us who are fearful and may be in need of healing in many different areas in our lives. God also wants to provide the means by which we can be MORE FRUITFUL and FULFILLED as we use the gifts He makes available to us for our good and for the good of others. Our responsorial psalm (146) proclaims that God is EVER FAITHFUL and GOOD to us because He loves us with an EVERLASTING LOVE. Our response to God’s eternal goodness and love for us is to give Him praise and thanks out of our love for Him and the love He wants us to have for others. In the Letter of St. James (2:1-5) we are encouraged not to be judgmental in our giving of service to others. Instead we are to be impartial and loving toward them. In the Gospel of Mark (7:31-37) Jesus wanted His healing miracle to be done as privately as possible just as He wants our good works to be done as privately as possible too—yet all for the glory and praise of God!!! This weekend throughout our country is Grandparents Day! What a fantastic opportunity this is to give thanks to God for our grandparents whether they are living or deceased!!! If they are living, let them know how much you still appreciate their kindness, goodness, and generosity they have shown you and may continue to do so if they are able. For your grandparents who are no longer living, keep them in your pray-ers for the eternal repose of their souls. May they continue to intercede for you with our loving Lord as you are doing for them!!!! Thank you for the generosity you shared with Fr. Zawadi, the Crosier priest from the Congo in the heart of Africa. Fr. Zawadi had appealed for our help last week-end for his native people back home, especially the children. Be assured that they are keeping us in their prayers for our help in their needs that are ongoing.

Remember in your prayers those who need our help: Mary Jo Hostert

It doesn't matter if you have kids or not, 77 Ways to Pray With Your Kids is a great book to find inspiration when prayer time feels stale, shallow, or maybe unoriginal. It's great to get started praying. It is great if you feel very experienced in prayer but would welcome ideas for how to add variety to your approach to prayer. It's great for ideas to pray alone, or with others. It is great for identifying opportunities to pray in the every day or by liturgical seasons or holidays... It has EVERYTHING. Pick up a copy at the entrances to our three churches...a gift to you from Parish Champions at Dynamic Catholic.
