4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME-B
If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. God spoke directly to Moses. In the first reading
God has promised the people that he will speak directly to
someone from their own kin like he speaks to Moses so
those people can hear and understand. They will be able to
hear the word of God in their own language and within their
own culture. What an amazing opportunity. I know I would
love to hear directly from God. Today it seems hard to
know exactly what to do and what really is God’s will.
Back then God spoke directly to Moses, and he said exactly
what to do. The people in the first reading have a prophet in
their midst. But this opportunity comes with responsibility
also. They have to listen and obey. And false prophets will
not be tolerated. Actually, this helps them out too, because
anyone who pretends to prophesy, but isn’t the prophet God
speaks to directly will die, so the people actually know that
their prophet is real. That makes it easier to trust in and
follow his words.
Even the demons listen to Jesus and obey. He calls
out the unclean spirit that recognizes that Jesus is the voice
of God and no match for the evil spirit, which is destroyed
at his words. The people are amazed at this, but the voice of
God is that powerful.
It’s more difficult today to hear and understand the
voice of God, but not impossible. We can read it here in the
scriptures. We can sense it in our conscience. We can see it
in God’s creation. We should be alert and aware for where
it will express itself. God is all around us. We need to rec-
ognize his voice when we hear it. If today you hear his
voice, harden not your hearts. - Tamora Whitney

SACRED HEART CHURCH GREENWICH
REFLECTION
“The last enemy to be destroyed is death” (1
Corinthians 15: 24–26). Jesus called disciples to be
with him as he began his mission at Capernaum; now
he calls us to be with him as he continues his mission
in the towns and cities where we live. The Spirit de-
scends upon each of us at baptism, and a voice from
heaven says to each of us, “You are my beloved.” We,
like Christ, will often be tempted by Satan not to be-
lieve these words when the power of evil seems to be
invincible. We will also be tempted to use power and
authority, not with Christ's compassion in service of
others, but to advance our own reign.
Later in his gospel, Mark talks about
authentic Christian discipleship. Two disciples who
were with Jesus at Capernaum (James and John) seem
to have assumed that discipleship means enjoying po-
sitions of power. Jesus summoned all his disciples and
explained his notion of power. He said that among the
Gentiles, rulers make their authority felt and lord it
over people. But, he added, among his disciples, who-
ever wishes to be great must be the servant of all. This
was the notion of power that led Jesus to teach, to cast
out demons, to cure illnesses, and finally to give him-
self up to death on a cross with the supreme power of
love. “For the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for
many” (Mark 10: 45). Campion P. Gavaler, O.S.B.

THANK YOU FROM BIRTHRIGHT
Thank you so much for your continued support to Birth-
right of Greater Stamford. Sue Franco delivered six beauti-
fully hand-knitted sweaters made by one of your parishion-
ers. Our new mothers will certainly appreciate the gift of
warmth for their babies. Sue also brought us a brand new
down coat which, within a half hour, was given to one of
our clients who had little to cover her growing “baby
bump”. How quickly you can make a difference! God’s
blessings to all of you who assist us in our mission of help-
ing women in crisis and their babies.-Denise Stack, Director

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY MEETING Saturday, February 3
rd at 9:30 AM in the School Hall
2018 ANNUAL BISHOP’S APPEAL This week we begin the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal to
provide the funds for the pastoral, educational and charita-
ble ministries of the Diocese of Bridgeport. This year’s
theme, Joy in Christ, Our Gift to Share, calls us to come
together as a people of God to live and share the faith we
profess as we carry forth the mission of Jesus Christ. When
you receive your Appeal mailing this week, please take
time to read the information thoroughly, how you can help
and give prayerful consideration when contemplating your
sacrificial gift to the campaign. Our assessment this year
is $50,000. Thank you.
