Sacred Heart Catholic Church Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ October 20, 2019
Reflection from the Pastor: November 1st is the Church’s celebration of all the saints: those named in the calendar,
canonized or beatified, and the great multitude of those who enjoy the beatific vision
in heaven. It is a Holy Day of Obligation which means that all the faithful are
obliged to celebrate Holy Mass unless for serious reason. Please plan ahead.
A TEACHING ON: THE HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION
We all try to establish an “everyday routine” for ourselves which in turn helps
us make the most of our time. For most of us, we use our work schedules to know
when we have time for things like family, fun, sleep, vacations, sports, etc. But
there are certain days of the year where we throw out the routine to celebrate
special occasions (holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, etc.). We commemorate
them because they were important days in our life (“my life changed that day”, “I
got the greatest gift of all”). We change our schedule on these days in order to do
something extraordinary. For example: on the day of an Wedding Anniversary
(1) we might arrange to go to work late so that we could spend extra time together
in the morning to have breakfast; (2) we could arrange to leave work early so that
we could spend an entire afternoon together and go somewhere special for dinner;
(3) we might take the entire day off.
In a very similar way, there are days of the year where Church throws out the
normal routine and celebrates special occasions. We call them the Holy Days of
Obligation and they are opportunities we make to commemorate certain events of
our history and celebrate our relationship with God.
Holy Days of Obligation are considered grave matter and so to intentionally not
participate in Mass or not have a serious reason for being absent is to put one’s
self in mortal sin. If you have questions about whether or not you have a serious
reason, please feel free to email or call me. The pastor, who has the care for souls
and authority, can issue a dispensation (permission to be absent from Mass).
