PASTORAL REFLECTIONS T.F. Brosnan

The Mongolian Genghis Khan ruled the largest empire in world history, stretching from the tip of Korea to the gates of Vienna. Genghis Khan’s tomb, thought to contain untold treasures, has yet to be found; but his legacy lives on in legend. He, being noted for his stamina, was said to have fathered, by rape or romance, thousands within his vast empire. A number of years ago, when DNA analysis was just getting underway, a study was undertaken to test that assumed fanciful legend. According to the New York Times, DNA samples were taken from men from Korea to Turkey, testing to see how many shared that particular Y chromosome (the sex chromosome that distinguishes male from female and is passed from father to son ad infinitum) that would link them to a distant Mongolian paternal ancestor - ostensibly, the Great Khan himself. The results of the experiment surprisingly revealed that an unusually high percentage of males in that large swath of geography from which the sample was taken were indeed descended from a common male Mongolian ancestor. The legend, it would seem, may well be founded on fact.

I recently joined Family Tree DNA, submitting a sample of my DNA with the specific purpose of tracing that Y chromosome. The Family Tree database compares thousands of others who have likewise submitted DNA samples. I’ve yet to read the lengthy explanation provided by the company but from the illustrated graphs it’s obvious that I share a lot with other men from Britain, Ireland, Spain and Germany. Alas, I am not Mongolian.

The nature/nurture debate has long been with us and remains, as far as I understand, unresolved as to which takes precedence in determining the direction of a person’s life. After many decades of believing that nurture was all important, we’ve now come to understand that genes play an enormously important role; but how our genetic make-up interacts with our particular environment and history seems to be the key to outcome. In other words it’s not either/or but both/and.

When I found my birthmother some 30 plus years ago the first thing she told me was that she named me for her brother, a Jesuit priest. Chalk one up for nature – a religion-gene, so to speak? Having had known my mother for some ten years until she died, I could see certain aspects of my personality in hers though physical resemblance didn’t seem evident at all. Then again, her six other children were a hodgepodge of physical characteristics from hair color to height. And I am a priest today mostly due to the positive influence of my adoptive parents and probably not because of some mysterious genetic predisposition.

Perhaps it’s a bit risqué to speculate about Jesus’ DNA, especially his Y chromosome, which he surely possessed since he was a man, and was like unto us in everything but sin. But such a speculation is at the very heart of the Christian religion which insists that Jesus had no human

father. The gospels are replete with innuendo about Jesus’ origins, and the first heresies in the history of Christianity centered precisely around his mysterious origins.

In today’s gospel Jesus makes an assertion: “I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you.” Although we might ascribe omniscience to Jesus’ divine consciousness, I would find it hard to believe that, in his human consciousness, he knew anything about genetics. But are we to take his assertion as literal or simply a use of analogy? What separates Catholicism and Orthodoxy from Protestantism is precisely our understanding of our relationship with the divine. Luther maintained that we human beings, even after baptism, remain what we were before – a damnable mass. In baptism, Luther taught that we are simply “clothed” in Christ, so that when the Father looks at us he sees only Christ which effects our redemption. For Catholics and Orthodox Christians what happens in baptism is not limited to the spiritual. We believe an “ontological” change takes place – a change that affects our very essence. The old way we used to refer to baptism, as being “christened,” being Christ-ed, reveals that truth. In baptism we become other Christs - anointed ones - transformed (for lack of a better word) into literal sons and daughters of God; we are, in essence, divinized.

Ontological effects, like mutations in our DNA, are not felt in any physical way (ontology belongs to the world of metaphysics, after all). Perhaps that’s where faith enters the picture. If we believe we are essentially changed – divinized – we might begin to look at our lives from a different perspective, from another point of view, and entertain the possibility of making changes for the better; indeed, imagine all kinds of possibilities.

If I understand some of the basics of genetics correctly, scientists can trace our ancestors in history because of the mutations to our genes that occur, seemingly haphazardly, through the millennia. Pope Benedict XVI has referred to the Resurrection as a mutation that effected an evolutionary leap for humanity. I suppose we could extend the analogy to the Incarnation as well, affirming St. Athanasius astounding statement that “God became man so that man could become God.”

We are, in the end, all mixed up – there’s no such thing as purity when it comes to genetic inheritance. I might not be in any way Mongolian, despite Genghis Khan’s robust virility; but I am a mix of many different ethnicities and probably races, not to mention cultures and religions – a product of both nature and nurture. Once God decided to become human, he allowed us to entertain the possibility that we could become like him, mutating (as it were) into beings who many theologians and philosophers have attempted to categorize over the centuries: rational animals, embodied souls, ensouled bodies, divinized men and women, other christs: in the end, just ordinary men and women who by acknowledging our past can embrace our future.

FAMILY MASS

The next Family Mass will be celebrated on

June 4th at 9:30am. At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. At Sacred Heart each month we have two special Masses for families. We celebrate Family Mass and Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). At both liturgies the children’s readings are used. Our Parish Children’s Choir, performs at Family

Mass. All children are welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. For information, please call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at 718-631-1307.

Family Masses will resume in the fall.

CHILDRENS’ LITURGY OF THE WORD

Our next CLOW Mass will be held on June 11th, at 9:30am this will be the final CLOW

mass for the school year. “Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word.”

What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at 718– 224-5695.
