SACRED HEART SCHOOLS

From its founding by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville in 1877 as the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Sacred Heart Schools (SHS) has a proud tradition of transforming lives. With its global alumni reach and extraordinary impact, SHS strengthens and continues the educational ministry of the Ursuline Sisters who have served in Louisville since 1858.

SHS is rooted in both the teaching mission of the Catholic Church and the tradition of the Ursuline Sisters, founded by St. Angela Merici. SHS is comprised of four schools—Sacred Heart Academy, Sacred Heart Model School, Sacred Heart Preschool, and Sacred Heart School for the Arts—all of which are committed to education that affirms the dignity of each individual and promotes community, leadership, reverence, and service.

ACADEMICS

Sacred Heart Academy is a proud IB World School offering both the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for grades 9 and 10 and the Diploma Programme (DP) for grades 11 and 12. To this end, SHA prides itself on offering an academic experience that is concept-based and promotes inquiry and experimentation, rather than simply teaching content and then testing on it. SHA classrooms are active, student-centered, inquiry-based environments where students are challenged to take academic risks and to develop their research, writing, and critical thinking skills. Teachers are collaborative and creative and participate in extensive professional development with other educators across the world. As a result, SHA students are deeply engaged in their learning and can make connections to the world beyond their school campus.

Students have the option to choose from 34 college-level courses including IB, Advanced Placement (AP), and dual-credit courses. In fact, 56% of juniors and seniors are enrolled in college-credit courses. SHA also offers a wide variety of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) courses with a concentration in computer science. The four-year sequenced computer science program engages students in computational thinking through activity, project, problem-based learning, and will get them excited about the possibilities in careers that use computing.

SHA operates on a four-block schedule each day, which offers students the opportunity to develop their planning and academic preparation skills. This style of schedule also means that students have ample opportunity to seek additional help from teachers, study with peers, collaborate on group projects, visit the counselor or the academic dean, or simply take more time for independent quiet study.

THE ARTSAt Sacred Heart Academy, the performing and visual arts allow students to find their voices, express themselves, and showcase their creativity.

Every student at SHA takes at least one visual arts class but may enroll in art all four years of high school. Students can choose to commit to the four-year IB Art Program or experience a variety of art electives including jewelry design, painting, photography, ceramics, and sculpture. Graphic design, computer animations, video production, and digital photography classes are available through the Business, Communications, and Technology department.

The performing arts department offers a variety of courses and co-curricular opportunities. SHA’s choral program has a long tradition of excellence offering three choirs for promising vocalists: Bel Canto Choir, A Cappella, and Madrigals. For students interested in a focused study of vocal music, the four-year IB Music Certificate program prepares students for the professional world of performing arts. In addition, performing arts electives include a survey of performing arts, music theory, piano, and introduction to dance or acting. SHA students may also participate in two musical theatre productions each year.

ATHLETICS

With one of the most successful athletic programs in the state, Sacred Heart Academy understands the meaning of giving 110%. The 15 sports offered at SHA represent just a handful of ways students can become involved and show their Valkyrie pride. Nearly 50% of students participate in at least one sport, including three no-cut sports and intramural flag football. SHA’s state-of-the-art athletic facilities are conveniently located on campus, equipped with a gym, fitness center, turf field, two grass fields, softball field, regulation track, and field houses.

Sports offerings include cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, volleyball, archery, basketball, bowling, swimming and diving, lacrosse, softball, tennis, track and field, cheerleading, and dance.

STUDENT LIFE

Sacred Heart Academy takes great pride in its mascot: the Valkyrie, a Norse mythological woman who carried the bodies of brave deceased warriors to heaven. At SHA, the Valkyrie represents the school’s goal to build and graduate strong women of great faith, and the school has many programs and traditions that reflect this goal.

Since its founding, SHA has established special traditions such as the Freshman Mass, when seniors present each freshman with a single red rose to symbolize the beginning of their journey as a Valkyrie. Upon graduation, graduates carry a bouquet of red roses to symbolize all that they have gained during their time at SHA. At the end of the ceremony, instead of throwing their caps, graduates tear off rose petals and throw them into the air to celebrate. Another beautiful tradition that embraces the spirit of the Valkyrie is the Junior Ring Ceremony. SHA students receive their class rings in March or April of their

junior year. At the ring ceremony, each junior is presented her ring by a special female role model in her life. The ceremony focuses on their responsibility to serve as the senior leaders in the coming year.

The Jean Frazier Leadership Institute (JFLI) at Sacred Heart Schools promotes a culture of leadership by providing authentic leadership experiences that create empowered leaders who seek to serve others. The JFLI has created a four-part approach to leadership development, including social emotional learning, skill-based learning, practice, and reflection. The three pillars of the Jean Frazier Leadership Institute (Leadership, Service, Financial Literacy) combine to provide a comprehensive leadership development program that inspires students to discover their passion and their purpose.

SHA has more than 50 clubs and organizations for students to explore a new interest, develop leadership skills, and meet new friends. Whether through Student Council or 100 Club, Art & Photography or Culinary Club, or the VEX Robotics or Computer Programming Club, SHA empowers students to try new things.

Sacred Heart Academy’s commitment to Catholic, Christian values reaches far beyond the classroom through liturgical services, retreats, and service. Each day begins with prayer, and the community gathers regularly for Mass and other religions celebrations. SHA’s four-year retreat program provides opportunities to bond with others and grow student commitment to the Ursuline Core Values. The program includes a mandatory underclassmen retreat and, while optional, a senior retreat said to be one of the best experiences of a Sacred Heart student. Called to serve others, SHA students provide more than 25,000 hours of service to the Louisville community each year. Freshmen and sophomores are required to do 20 hours of service, while juniors and seniors are required to complete 25.
