He agreed to take on the position and began the task of persuading voters to pass an upcoming election that would support the district monetarily with tax dollars. Sweeten was told the district had failed the last audit with the state and documentation was necessary to bring the district into compliance. Sweeten said even with the hurdles he welcomed the challenge. Sweeten dove into the issues at hand all the while applying for a grant to also fund the district. He said in the beginning the board members told him the job would entail about twenty hours a week. Sweeten usually put in about sixty. He admits the district had a pretty good first year, especially with all the accomplishments. See “Sweeten” page 2

An inspiring tale of Christmas Spirit in World War I is told and retold as the Truce of 1914 Every concievable nation at war somewhere certainly along the trench-lines of Northern France and Belgium There were otherswhere the men actually played football boxed sang carolsand buried their dead

The pictures of the soldiers shaking hands laughing and smiling showing family photos knowing in less than 24 hoursthey would be at war with each other again is a powerful and thought provolking image of the Great War The Great War whose next three years would change the world forever Soldiers of the Western Front laid down their arms on Christmas Day and met in No Manrsquos Land

exchanging food and cigarettes The cease fire was entirely unofficial and there had been no prior discussions and troops acted spontaneously Not only did this truce actually happen but it is said the event was more widespread than commonly portrayed

There are so many

stories of the Christmas truce but it seems to be that there was no one single reason only one single purposeby the time officers realised what was happening the initial meetings had been made and most commanders either ignored it or joined it Today most stories finish with the soldiers returning to their trenches and then fighting again the next day but in many areas the peace lasted much longer

ldquoThe so-called Christmas Truce of 1914 came only five months after the outbreak of war in Europe and was one of the last examples of the outdated notion of chivalry between enemies in warfare In 1915 the bloody conflict of World War I erupted in all its technological fury and the concept of another Christmas

Truce became unthinkablerdquo

That brings to mind the pictures of British soldiers in Afganistan in Santa hats firing missiles because they were attacked during a Christmas celebration and how sad it seems that so many of our soldiers are far from home tonight while I wrap my gifts and fill my stockings If you would like to remember help write or send care packages to the men and women who wonrsquot make it home this year below is a good place to start

ldquoMay No Soldier Go Unlovedrdquo is the motivation behind Soldiersrsquo Angels This quote is at the top of their page ldquoIf anybody is wondering

Where are the young idealists Where are the people willing to devote themselves to causes larger than themselves They are in uniform in Iraq [and Afghanistan] straddling the divide between insanity and orderrdquo -- NY Times Columnist David Brooks Visit soldiersangelsorg and remember our brothers and sisters mothers and fathers sons and daughters who are far far from home and in harms way

NUECES CANYON MISSION RESTORATION ORGANIZATION

continued from page 1He said all the data

collected in the last seven years is now basis to move forward in conservation

In recent months the district has been involved in a lawsuit that challenged this concept Sweeten took it upon himself to start networking with other agencies to form a position of respect among the other districts His personal drive to learn everything he could about the preservation of water in the state lead him continue to move the district

forward Sweeten retired from

the state but had always been interested in water issues of the area He grew up here and knew the water would not last forever unless steps were taken towards preservation He said one of his main goals was to teach good stewardship and promote conservation The district has in the past furnished book covers for school districts taught conservation classes and co-sponsored Riparian workshops

Sweeten contends one

well when it runs at capacity is the same as five garden hoses One well is not going to dry up the rivers not one person cutting cedar brush is going to make a difference in conservation but thousand of acres and each resident practicing conservation will make a difference He said everyone needs to practice being good stewards of our natural resources Limit water usage during droughts

Sweeten said using scare tactics to tell people one well will drain the rivers is

untrue and unfair to citizens He said the district got off track with the lawsuit and needs to return to its goal which is to protect and preserve ground water resources Sweeten is a major supporter of personal property rights Conservation has to be important to everyone as people who get to enjoy our beautiful countryside and governed not so much by regulations but more by education

Sweeten won a place on the Edwards County Commissionerrsquos Court and

will take the position in January 2001 Open and honest Sweeten said he felt the district wasted both Real and Edwards counties time and money with the lawsuit over one well He said there comes a time when you must step aside and he hopes the district can continue to move forward On a personal note throughout the time I covered the district meetings Lee was continuously professional honest and extremely courteous and he will be missed

IntroductionThis story came from one of my personal experiences many years ago Prior to his death it was customary for my Brother and I to spend at least Christmas Day together While driving around one Christmas in San Antonio we passed by a shelter and I noticed one old gentleman coming out with his torn jacket pulled around him So ldquoAnother Christmas Another Dayrdquo was born The cold north wind came whistling down the alley and found its way into the cardboard shelter The man reached out and pulled the pile of newspapers closer around him Taking some in his hand he lined the inside of his ragged coat then rearranged the boxes in an attempt to block out the snow that was drifting along the alley The moaning sound of the trees protesting the brutal storm caused his body to shiver as he huddled back against the alley wall Daylight approached and the wind like a thief faded away into the early morning light Crawling out from under the newspaper he made his way through the pile of cardboard and slowly got to his feet Large flakes of snow no longer hampered by the wind drifted silently to the ground He slowly stretched then turned and rearranged the boxes in an attempt to protect his makeshift home Once finished he walked across the alley and relieved himself behind a pile of trash Turning he made his

way along stopping occasionally to search for breakfast in the cans of trash lining the alley walls Finding none he left the alley and plodded along the snow-covered sidewalk towards the shelter in the center part of town He looked up at the courthouse clock as he slowly shuffled past At seven AM on Christmas morning he had the street to himself Stopping in front of a store he pressed his face close to the window The display was filled with the promises of good times and happiness but the reflection he saw as he slowly backed away showed only a hollow pain filled shell of what had once been a proud man Turning quickly so he would not see the tears flowing down his unshaven face he took a tattered coat sleeve and dried his eyes Crossing the street he entered a quiet residential neighborhood not unlike the one where he had once lived He stopped and leaned against a sign post for a moments rest After a short pause he slowly surveyed his surroundings The snow cast eerie shadows as it journeyed downward covering the dirty streets like a cleansing blanket From across the way he could hear the sound of children laughing as they unwrapped brightly covered boxes of promises and good behavior their faces showing the hope joy and innocence of the season Lights from the tree created multi-colored reflections on the snow covered ground outside their window

For a few moments the man stood in the cold remembering seasons past He had been successful and life had been good before his world fell apart Before the other man before the divorce before the alcohol before losing the job before before giving up and just not caring anymore The man smiled as he thought of his son opening presents on Christmas The smile quickly changed to sadness when he realized that he hadnrsquot seen him in over five years A son who would be in high school Over the years the tears had been replaced by lines of despair etched permanently on his face Once more the wind began to blow and the cold surrounded him like a blanket of ice The cardboard liners in his shoes did little to keep out the cold snow and his feet felt numb He brushed the flakes from his shoulders then rubbed his hands together in an effort to regain some warmth Moving away from the signpost he slowly plodded down the street The lights of the shelter like a beacon in a wintry gale beckoned to him with the promise of warmth and comfort With others he formed a trickle of forgotten humanity slowly trudging through the blowing snow towards the lights and the promise of warmth they provided He approached the shelter and stood in the short line of lost souls waiting for the building to open its doors As he waited the line grew behind him Men

and women some with small children made their way through the bitter storm in the hope of a warm meal and a bed for the night No one spoke There was no need to There was nothing to say The doors opened and the line slowly trudged forward One by one they entered the building Inside it was warm The smell of coffee and freshly baked biscuits permeated the air Coffee and biscuits that would soon be the only warm meal many would have that day After passing through the serving line he found and empty place and sat down When he began to eat he heard the sound of someone playing Christmas carols on a piano The memories played across his face as he put down his cup and listened to the make shift choir perform the songs of the season He caught himself thinking about the last Christmas he had spent with his family He remembered the look on his sonrsquos face as the boy happily tore open the gaily wrapped packages his wife as she sat beside him in the coziness of companionship and the smell of turkey roasting in the oven The music stopped and his memories slowly ebbed to an end Even though it was warm in the shelter a sudden chill went through him His hands shook as he picked up the cup and had the last sip of the now cold coffee He finished then picked up his tray and carried it back to the kitchen where he along with the others helped clean the aftermath of the meal

Once the food was put away and the dishes cleaned he joined the crowd as one of the shelter workers began to pass out small bags of fruit and candy to the younger children Small bags that brought the same look of happiness that the man had noticed when he had stopped in the street and watched the children unwrap presents earlier The day progressed and the storm strengthened Howling wind rattled the windowpanes as it swirled the snow into large drifts A few more stragglers braved the storm and made their way to the haven of the shelter By late afternoon the shelter was overflowing One by one the people began to drift out making room for others who were looking for the warmth of hot coffee and a bit of companionship The man sighing deeply finished one last cup of coffee got to his feet and after stopping for a moment to pick up a fallen child made his way out into the street The sudden chill made him shiver and he turned up the collar his old coat but it gave little protection from the biting wind Glancing back for one last look at the warmth he was leaving behind he thought ldquoAnother Christmas No just another dayrdquo Turning he slowly shuffled back to his cardboard home in the alley while the snow silently covered the evidence of his passage

There are as many Christmas traditions as there are families that celebrate this Christian winter holiday Here is look at some of the most popular traditions and the folklore behind them

The Christmas Tree Nothing says Christmas time like the lights angels and bright colored ornaments shining on your Christmas Tree The legend of the Christmas tree can be traced back to the early 8th century when an English missionary named Saint Boniface interrupted a group of pagan men about to cut down an oak tree to be used for a human sacrifice He felled the tree and showed them the young fir tree beneath He told them this sapling with its branches pointing upward toward Heaven represented the Holy child The legend of

Saint Boniface was codified in 1539 when the records of the Cathedral of Strasbourg mention erecting a Christmas tree During the later half of the 16th century other churches began erecting Christmas trees By the 17th century the tradition had migrated into peoplersquos homes

The use of a Christmas tree indoors appears to have begun in Germany German Christians would bring trees into their homes to decorate When the German immigrants came to American they also brought along their Christmas trees as the Dutch brought the tradition of exchanging gifts Early Christmas trees were often decorated with apples nuts cookies colored popcorn and candles The invention of electricity in the early 20th century and use of electrical

Christmas lights helped spread the use of the Christmas tree

Poinsettias Poinsettias with their ruby-colored star-shaped leaves native to Mexico and falsely rumored to be poisonous symbolize the Star of Bethlehem According to the Christmas story the Star of Bethlehem led the three wise men to the manger where the baby Jesus was born F i r s t discovered by the early Aztecs the poinsettia has long been associated as an Indian symbol of purity Mexican legend tells of an impoverished girl who had nothing to offer on the alter to Jesus at Christmas Eve other than weeds She brought the weeds to her church the weeds miraculously blossomed into a beautiful poinsettia plant In Mexico the poinsettia plant is

called Flores de Noche Buena Spanish for ldquoflowers of the holy nightrdquo

Mistletoe While the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe is a long-standing and popular one the word ldquomistelrdquo is an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ldquodungrdquo and ldquotoerdquo means ldquotwinrdquo So mistletoe quite literally means ldquodung on a twigrdquo Yet it has also long been believed to carry magical powers The Druids believed that mistletoe represented the treersquos soul and sexual prowess The very first people to believe in the magic of mistletoe were the ancient Greeks who would kiss under the mistletoe which later became customary during marriage rites as well

The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe on

Christmas emerged in Europe during the Middle Ages The original custom held that each time a man kissed a woman under a twig of mistletoe he should remove one of the berries Once all the berries were gone no more kissing could take place under that twig

As our Christmas traditions and celebrations come from many lands and cultures and for just as many reasonsrdquo Joyeux Noeumllrdquo from the French Creole or ldquo Buon Natale ldquo from Italy maybe ldquoSchone Weinachtenrdquo from the Swiss or Feliz Navidad from Mexico or our Texas sized Merry Christmaswherever you arewe wish you wonderful holidays joyous memories and a safe and Happy New Year

Where are the young idealists Where are the people willing to devote themselves to causes larger than themselves They are in uniform in Iraq [and Afghanistan] straddling the divide between insanity and orderrdquo -- NY Times Columnist David Brooks Visit soldiersangelsorg and remember our brothers and sisters mothers and fathers sons and daughters who are far far from home and in harms way

continued from page 1He said all the data

collected in the last seven years is now basis to move forward in conservation

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
