After almost a year of concept development and benchmarking, we prou-dly release the first issue of the Sabiá Magazine. It has been designed to be a space without borders for the Brazilian contemporary art. We will strive to overcome new challenges in each issue, for each publication will surely be unlike any other. We believe in technology as an ally that will aid us in un-veiling the messages that contemporary art expresses through notebooks, canvasses, and wall murals.Our goals have been carefully determined and we struggle to reach excellent standards worthy of representing the greatness of the works featured in our pages. First of all, we want to exalt the artists through their art, as each work of art reveals an aspect of Brazilian culture that goes beyond the triteness usually expressed in foreigner’s images about Brazil. We invite you to leave behind any pre-conceptions and stereotypes about Brazil and dive into the complex and unique Brazilian culture. In addition, we would also like to en-courage you to send any feedback, impressions or suggestions about the magazine, so that we can incorporate them and continue to improve every day. What is “Sabiá”?

The bird Rufous-bellied Thrush (Turdus rufiventris) is known in Portuguese as “Sa-biá” and is the Brazilian national bird since 2002. It is one of the most common birds in southeastern Brazil, found either at campside or urban landscapes and with a broad presence at the Brazilian literature, music and culture.

“I am 23 years old and I have enjoyed drawing since I was a child. What inspires me has not changed much since my childhood years. I admire and miss a lot of things that I used to watch or read during my childhood, such as: tv shows (specially Castelo Rá Tim Bum and many others from TV Cultura), theatre plays, comic books, or books filled with illustrations. This feeling is what I try to transmit through my work.”

“Wood is part of my life. I was born among sawmills and timbers, in a civilization that swallowed the forest. From the hammer and saw, I turned to the chisel, which was a gift from an aunt when I was nine. I’m from the pre-plastic era. I carved in my youth, forgot it in my adulthood. Got back to it as a necessity; when I needed furniture to my home after my wedding. Through long wonderings in the beach I once again dis-covered the meaning of art, as I thought about the Renaissance and its role in inhibiting the ordinary in works of art. Further motivation came from my shrink, who encouraged me to look back into the past in search of pleasure. Woodworks, construction sites and beaches became the source of raw material, which I would later use in my work. The reference point for my works of art came from the work of the Italian artist Roberto Cippoloni. My work reuses and recycles wood, aiming at a critical approach about the rela-tionship between economic development and waste of natural resources, mostly from the Amazon forest. I am absorbed by themes such as urban skylines, natural disasters, flowers and forests. There is also the Don Quijote ‘ghost’, from who I can’t escape, completing the transit among figurative and abstraction. I almost never try to portray anything specific. I just trim pieces to fit, then glue, staple and nail it compul-sively, until I get tired.”

Catarina Bessell is an architecture graduate from the Universidade de São Paulo, and currently works as an illustrator and designer. Catarina maintains a weekly illustration collaboration in the Mercado section of the Folha de São Paulo newspaper and also illustrates sections of the Pes-quisa Fapesp magazine. Her illustrations can be found in Brazilian and International magazines. In addition, she is working in the new adverti-sing campaign for CooperVision contact lenses. She believes that each work/text/story needs a different language and because of that she is constantly experimenting with new techniques. Instead of aiming for a personal style, Catarina researches new materials and references for her works. Nowadays she lives in Berlin, Germany.

Diego has a degree in architecture and urbanism and also works as an illustrator. He is a member of the Nimbus Group, which has works in architecture, design, art direction, scenography and web design. His first individual exhibition was in 2009, entitled: “Tragedy mixed to the nothing.” In 2010 he graduated from architecture with the final project “Attics - images & imaginaries from the box-city”, which consisted of a series of ephemeral artistic interventions in downtown Florianópolis. This work resulted in his art being permanently placed in the architec-ture building of Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina.

Eliana Vieira is a photographer of fashion, advertising, still photo-graphy and portraits. Her interest in images was influenced by her mother, as she would always record family moments with a camera. She is an advertising graduate who has worked in video production and television. Eliana’s interest in enhancing her photography skills lead her to at-tend courses in other cities; she took fashion photography with Bob Wolfenson, product photography with Clicio Barroso and portraits with Marcos Rosa. Her later work includes: fashion photography with photographer Fábio Cabral, a collaboration with the maga-zines Contigo!, Criativa, VIP, Strass, Folha de São Paulo newspaper, and advertising and modelling agencies. More recently, Eliana has entered a new stage in her work: beauty photography, and here presents an exclusive project for Sabiá Magazine.

Iskor is an artist from São Paulo city, who since 2001 has made of the city streets his canvas. He has multiple projects going on and divides his time between digital works, illustrations and paintings. Iskor also participates in the collective of art Overlei.

João was born in Trindade, country town of Goiás state and was raised in the capital city of Goiânia. In his childhood he started ex-perimenting with the collage technique. Later on, as a grown-up, he moved to São Paulo city looking for answers to his artistic cra-ft. In 1991 João went back to Goiânia, already recognized through expositions and awards. Wilma Lindomar da Silva, an art collector saw João’s work and took 250 works of art to Europe. In 1997, João moved to the Netherlands. The artist is in search of new languages and materials through which silence can communicate and con-vey meaning with the aid of the visual world. Every year, he seeks to reassert himself through a singular visual identity. The perfect cut and the search for new symbolism draws his art to different phases, however always using the human figure as subject. (Adaptation of Alana Morais text)

“I was born and raised in Saúde neighborhood in the South region of São Paulo city. It was my academic pursuit what took me to other re-gions of the city; high school in the North, technical school in the East and Graphic Design college in the South. In between these routes full of contrasts I realized the importance of listening, sharing and even ma-king up stories. Something that, in my view, helps people understand each other and get along, even if their lives are totally different. Maybe it is there where lays the transformation power of the arts; in achie-ving a junction through drawing, movie, song, literature, food or simply knowing how to listen to others. Listening to one another is probably the most important thing. Nowadays, practicing patience and com-passion is the most powerful artistic manifestation one can achieve.”

FIlhas d’Oxum (Oxum daughters) is the first documental photo essay pro-duced by the photographer and graphic designer Raimundo Britto. The pictures were taken at the Yemanjá festivity in February 2010 and do-cument the passage of a group of women coming from the city of Serrinha - interior of Bahia state in Brazil. This group was composed by “filhas de san-to de um terreiro de Oxum” (devotees of Oxum divinity of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé). Dressed in golden yellow, they contrasted with the blue sky and the crowd dressed in white, which is the typical colour of the celebration. The women - grandmothers, mothers and daughters -, expres-sed the same typical archetype as the African divinity (Oxum), meaning not only sweetness, but audacity, fertility and independence. Human faces ana-lized under a raw view, having the faith as narrative guideline.

Rubens Scarelli, also known as Rusc, was born in Atibaia, a town in the countryside of São Paulo state. He is a self-taught artist who began to work with illustration and design at the age of 22 in an advertising agency in São Paulo city in order to begin his freelance career drawing comic books. In 2007 he started to work with t-shirt graphic design and keeps doing so un-til now. His illustrations are done in pencil and finalized in ink and brush to become digitalized and then the drawings go through image processing and vetorial illustration software.
