There were hallucinations, the scare of falling asleep mid-stroke and hypothermia.

But amidst it all, there was no quit-ting as marathon swimmers Alex Cape and Susan Simmons accom-plished a 70-kilometre Cowichan Lake double: a non-stop, 31-hour adventure from Friday, Aug. 22 to Saturday, Aug. 23.

“The both of us are beat up, we’re tired,” said Simmons, whose neck was so chafed it was still cushioned under a heap of fresh gauze and ban-dages five days later.

The Victoria duo started and ended the epic swim on the beach at Lake Cowichan, and were still recov-ering nearly two weeks later.

While the two are awaiting confir-mation that the swim is among the top 15 per cent of open water dis-tances ever completed, there was no waiting to confirm they had joined an exclusive group of only 120 peo-ple to swim 24-hours straight.

There were a lot of mental chal-lenges and it definitely dragged on at points, but I’m so glad we did it,” said Cape, 34.

Swimmers in exclusive company after Lake Cowichan double feat

Cape reached the turnaround point of Heather Campground at about 5:30 a.m. on Saturday after a 2:45 p.m. start the previous day.

Simmons, 49, reached the same point shortly after. It was about two hours longer than the time it took them to do the same 34-km stretch in July 2013, and Cape was worried.

“The support and safety crew were com-forting. I was wonder-ing what’s wrong, but they were calm,” Cape said.

Each had their own safety crew of kayaks and “sherpas,” a kay-aker or outrigger who would run food to the swimmers from a big-ger boat. And though they trained together at Thetis Lake four times a week and accom-plished the incredible swim together, they experienced uniquely harrowing moments in Cowichan Lake.

“As soon as we hit 24 hours, I had my safety boat come near me so I could radio Alex and tell her, in the water,” Simmons said.

Simmons, who works in Saanich, endured several hallucinations. On Saturday morning, she fought the urge to sleep and succumbed twice, all while visions of flying bats raced back and forth below her.

By Saturday evening and with just a few hours to go, Simmons witnessed the figures of angels and devils on the horizon. She knew they were hallucina-tions, but that didn’t make them go away.

“I had to laugh in my head (when I thought): ‘Am I dying? Because I keep seeing angels and devils and being told to

swim to the light,’” Sim-mons said.

As it turned out, the light was real, where a welcoming party awaited her onshore.

Cape also experi-enced hallucinations during the final hours of her swim, like the changing colours of her support kayaks and multiple swimmers near the water.

To be fair, they were joined by swimmers, some for up to 10-km stretches.

“There was just so much to it, so many little things that had to

happen, and so much trust that I had to give to my safety team and crew,” Cape said.

Simmons agreed. “I was totally cognitive, but I couldn’t make a rational decision,” she said. “And giving up that control is not easy for me to do.”

There were about 100 friends, family and various supporters, most with volunteer roles. Surprisingly few were aware that Sim-mons nearly backed out of the swim before it started. She had dam-aged her left shoulder in early August and thought it was beyond repair in time for the swim.

Ironically, Simmons managed to mend the shoulder but fin-ished the swim with a sprained right ankle instead, likely due to the overuse of her ‘thumper kick,’ to com-pensate for the weak-ness in her swimming catch.

She credits active release therapy for res-urrecting it in time for Cowichan.

“I hadn’t told anyone

about my shoulder. It was so bad I couldn’t lift the arm more than 20 degrees. I actually swam just twice in the three week lead-up, doing six kilometres total instead of the scheduled taper of 40, 30 and 15 km (respec-tively),” Simmons said.

The shoulder weak-ness caused chafing consistent with a sec-ond degree burn. As Simmons’ left arm

came over her head, her goggles rubbed against her shoulder and neck, skinning her as she swam.

“I’m using antibiot-ics and staying out of the sun and ocean for at least two weeks,” she said.

Cape is recovering from her own list of injuries. She passed out upon exiting the water and experienced convulsions, and her internal tempera-ture dropped to 34.9 degrees.

“I’ve worked with B.C. Ambulance before so it was funny being in the truck as a patient and not as a para-medic,” said Cape, an army paramedic.

She eventually recov-ered and was released at 3 a.m. from hospital.

“It’s not about chang-ing my life, I know who I am, and what I do,” Cape said. “But it was an amazing adventure with so many different experiences, emotions

and stages along the way. It was very excit-ing and interesting, sharing it with every-one. We’re thankful they shared it with us and proud of what we all did.”

Cape’s role in the accomplishment has been overlooked at times, as Simmons picks up added atten-tion for living with mul-tiple sclerosis. Twenty years ago, Simmons was blind in one eye and nearly confined to a wheelchair before she

took control of her life through swimming and diet.

“For me, it was amaz-ing to see how excited and serious everyone was about this,” Sim-mons said. “We had so many people doing so many jobs. It was really something else.”

New community garden takes root at Gorge Park

Saanich is betting the farm that its first community garden in three decades will spur on similar projects across the dis-trict.

Dozens of supporters gath-ered last week for the ground-breaking ceremony of the Gorge Park Community Gardens, a labour of love for members of the Gorge Tillicum Community Association, led by board mem-ber Gabe Epstein.

“This is the result of 10 years of ideas, discussion and plan-ning,” said Epstein, standing on the 1600 square-metre site at the southeast end of Gorge Park.

Epstein, a retired elementary school teacher and driving force behind the Gorge Tillicum Urban Farmers, was joined by Saanich Coun. Paul Gerrard and GTCA president Rob Wickson, who said the two-year process work-ing with Saanich Parks and coun-cil has been positive.

“We never had a barrier mov-ing forward on these gardens,” Wickson said. “This now has so much potential to build commu-nity in the area.”

Once complete, about 60 plots

will be available to various com-munity groups and individual residents. (The wait list already includes close to 100 names.)

Several elevated beds will cre-ate easier access for elderly gar-deners and others with mobility problems, Epstein said.

A public gathering area, chil-dren’s play space, seating and public pathways are also being installed.

“This is about food security, but it’s also about the com-munity around the gardens,” Epstein said.

“People wanted a welcoming space, and that’s what we’re going to create.”

Songhees Nation representa-tive Will George offered bless-ings at the groundbreaking and exchanged gifts with supporters.

The gardens received Mexi-can orca beans from Lifecycles Project Society, while George left with a Western trumpet honey-suckle.

“I think these proj-ects should be going on

everywhere,” George said.A similar community garden

project had been in the works behind Saanich Commonwealth Place, but was nixed after local residents failed to show support for the plan last fall.

Gorge-Tillicum residents, in contrast, showed strong sup-port for the gardens, thanks in part to early outreach, said Ger-rard, who also chairs the dis-trict’s Health Saanich advisory committee.

“This is a wonderful project. We want a community garden in every community in Saanich, if we can,” he said.

The first phase of the project includes irrigation, fencing, a rain garden installation, a tool-shed and pathways. Epstein anticipates a spring opening if all goes as planned.

“We envision the space being used for community gatherings – live music, community din-ners, as many collaborations as we can realize,” he said.

Project first public success of long-term district plan for food security

The province is contemplat-ing changing how it punishes pubs, restaurants and liquor stores that violate liquor rules that ban over-serving and selling to minors.

Business owners have asked government for a more flexible penalty system and a month-long online consultation running to Sept. 30 asks stakeholders for input on the options.

One possibility to be explored is lower or higher penalties.

According to a government discussion paper released Fri-day, B.C. penalties are stiffer than most other provinces.

“Decreasing penalties would bring British Columbia in closer alignment with the average among the provinces,” it says, noting government must bal-ance business hardship and the need for deterrence for public safety.

A first offence for a B.C. liquor establishment typically means a one- to three-day suspension for overcrowding and 10 days or a $7,500 fine for selling to a minor.

(The first-offence maximum is $10,000 and 15 days for serving minors.)

Alberta bars have a choice of paying a fine or serving a sus-pension and most operators there choose the fine, which is typically $500 to $1,500 on a first offence. The stiffest penalties are in Ontario, where suspen-sions of 21 days and longer are common.

Another issue is perceived unfairness of the current system for different business types.

Food-primary outlets can keep on serving food during a suspension, while liquor-pri-mary bars and retail stores must close entirely. That raises the question of whether fines are a better option, the paper says.

It adds the penalties must spur liquor violators to volun-tary compliance and not be so low they’re merely treated as a cost of doing business.

A second offence is only counted as such if it happens within 12 months of the first one – after a year the slate is clean.

One option is to increase that period to two or three years, which would put more pres-

sure on repeat offenders whose subsequent penalties would be more severe.

Another question asks if repeat offences should be fines rather than suspensions.

The consultation is in response to recommendations flowing from the liquor policy review headed by B.C. Liberal MLA John Yap.

“We have been asking for review of the penalty sched-ule for a while,” said Jeff Guig-nard, executive director of the Alliance of Beverage Licensees, which reprensents a broad spec-trum of bars, stores and other liquor sellers.

He said a $7,000 fine for fail-ing to check an ID could be a month of profit for a mom-and-pop rural liquor store in north-ern B.C., but negligible to a big Vancouver bar.

There were 13,415 inspec-tions of liquor licensees last year, resulting in just under 400 contravention notices or nearly three per cent of inspections. But of those, less than half (171) led to enforcement action being taken.

Study Results to be Considered by Saanich Council

The District of Saanich undertook a study looking at the potential legalization of secondary suites in the area north of McKenzie Avenue as shown on the map below. Stalwart volunteer reflects on local craft beer revolutionTravis PatersonNews staff

It wasn’t long ago the saying, “Going for beers,” meant nothing more than a social gath-ering. Beer, or at least its contents, was never the focus.

But in 2014, it’s all about the beer – what’s in it, who made it and where’s it from.

The craft beer revolu-tion is upon us, to steal a phrase from local author Joe Wiebe, who captured it in a book by the same name.

And the current rev-olution wouldn’t be what it is, save for the Great Canadian Beer Festival, an incubator that’s brought 40 of the best Northwest (and beyond) breweries to Greater Victoria for the past 22 years.

The popular outdoor event returns to Royal Athletic Park today (3 to 8 p.m.) and tomor-row (noon to 5 p.m.).

“I try to think what the beer culture was when I grew up and I can’t. It’s not like what we have now,” says Peggy Pallan, Cordova Bay resident and long-time beer festival vol-unteer.

Pallan is an Islander through and through, born in a house on Clo-verdale Avenue. She’s witnessed firsthand the transformation of Vic-toria’s beer scene from fringe interest to full-scale craze.

“I always liked beer, but there was nothing to it until I joined Beer Fest as a volunteer. I remember driving past 15 years ago saying, ‘That looks like fun and I like fun.’ The next year I joined as a volunteer.”

Pallan soon fell in with the local chapter of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale), and began brewing beer and wine at home. She’s since won multiple awards for her brews and rib-bons for her wine. She’s also the current presi-dent of the Victoria Corks and Caps wine club.

Pallan is just one example of the legacy of the GCBF.

Victoria boasts mul-tiple beer festivals, as well as new and recently transformed beer halls such as The Drake Eatery (26 taps)

and The Churchill (55 taps). There’s also a 1.9-litre growler phenom-enon, which connects consumer to brewery.

It’s a far cry from what was available to Pallan in the 1970s.

She recalls touring Victoria’s once promi-nent Labatt brewery. She also remembers

visiting the original Drake pub, a beer hall with its own charms, but a place unlikely to draw legions of beer geeks looking for hard-to-find seasonal beers on tap.

“India Pale Ale is my favourite style, in the growler. Except if it’s a growler, I need some-

one to help me finish it,” she says.

Pallan joins another 467 volunteers this weekend at the Great Canadian Beer Festival. She’ll lead a group of 27 volunteers who run the front gate.

Beer Fest has played an important role intro-ducing Islanders to breweries beyond Van-couver Island, said Joe Wiebe, author of Craft Beer Revolution, a B.C. bestseller.

“It’s helped create a very knowledgeable and discerning craft beer culture here,” says Wiebe, adding 15 new B.C. breweries will be sampling their products at this year’s festival. Expect local favourites like Hoyne, Phillips, Moon Under Water, Lighthouse and others as [email protected]

Flip the switch on cellphones

Before jumping all over ICBC for requesting an increase of 5.2 per cent for basic insurance, let’s look at their reasons for the request.

Claims are up – way up – from five years ago.Bodily injury claims hit $1.9 billion in 2013,

up $73 million from 2012 and by more than $500 million from five years earlier.

That’s 33 per cent higher than five years ago.Legal and medical costs are also up.And what has happened in the past five years?Technology.The ever-growing use of cellphones and other

personal electronic devices by drivers is a major factor cited for the rise in injury claims.

But why should those of us without cellphones pay more because of the irresponsibility of some of those with them? Perhaps it’s time for ICBC to start awarding further reductions to those who do not have cellphones, or those who do not use them in their cars.

Of course, something like that would be near impossible to monitor. The real solution is for the automotive industry to jump in and rectify the situation.

Here’s how.Install a mechanism in the motor of the car

that renders smartphones, laptops and other such instrumentation useless, while the engine is engaged.

Impossible? Hardly. After all, you can already turn on the lights of your Gulf Islands cabin from your home in Victoria. A disengage switch for smartphones et al should be a breeze.

Too “Big Brother” for you? Don’t consider it “Big Brother”; consider it improvement to vehicle safety for the good of all.

Remember, seatbelts used to be optional; as did motorcycle helmets. Plenty of people protested those laws as well. But we eventually got over it.

Heaven forbid we should be forced to drive without the use of a phone, or a laptop, or a DVD player.

That’s so 1990.And what did car insurance cost in 1990?

In Saanich, new candidates with excellent credentials are lining up for the mayor and council positions. They are well educated. They volunteer, attend public meetings, listen and add their input. If elected, the new public servants will bring their expertise from software engineering, chemistry and intelligent information using the newest technology to the council chambers. It will be refreshing to see something get done. There will be a reduction of expensive studies to postpone decisions with less reliance on staff to make their decisions. For example: The latest Capital Regional District sewage study will cost the taxpayer another $210,000 to find other locations for sewage treatment facilities. Victoria, Saanich and Oak Bay have to find a solutions in their own backyard. What have they been doing for the past seven years and spending almost sixty million dollars?

Frank Leonard says he knows what is best for Saanich. If he believes in democracy he will have the courage to put the amalgamation question on the November ballot. If the answer is no to amalgamation, perhaps there can be a more co-operative CRD where each municipality might have just one vote. Let democracy rule. It is the informed voter who will decide what is best for Saanich.

Fassbender’s logicmind-bending

To Peter Fassbender, Minister of Education:

The few public comments i have heard or read coming from you have not instilled confidence in me that you have good public education as your vision.

For example, your statement that you do not believe that large classes have any (ill) impact on how children learn in the classroom makes me wonder not only what your own experiences have been, but also what your sources of information and knowledge are. We all come with certain ideas and opinions, but as the Minister of Education you have a particular responsibility and need to have a broad, deep and committed approach to create the best possible public education system in B.C.

The present situation between government and teachers is way out of hand. The ability to come to an agreement includes having respect for the law, respect for teachers,

caring about the education of our children and compassion for parents.

It also needs public money, given to you in trust by all B.C. residents in order to provide good public education. It makes no sense to hand out $40 per day to parents; it certainly is not covering day care cost, and it clearly does not create day care spaces.

But most of all, it sends the wrong message and pretends that it is given as support. But what it really shows is ill intent on the side of government and is a divisive – or at least distracting and disrespectful – move.

This is not a partisan issue; it is an issue of good government, for the common good of our children and their future.

I urge you to focus on a solution, on how to meet the desire of most of us to have children back at school and teachers doing what they are trained for, in a welcoming, supportive and conducive to learning environment.

One of Canada’s greats is crossing the B.C. Rugby Union sidelines this weekend.

Winston Stanley has returned to the Velox Valhallians and will lead the club’s top men’s rugby team. The first game is Saturday against the UVic Vikes, sparking the 2014 Barnard Cup premier men’s Island championship.

Kickoff is Saturday at 2:45 p.m. at UVic’s Wallace Field.

Stanley, an Oak Bay High grad, initially joined Velox following his retirement from pro rugby in 2003, which included 66 caps for Canada and two Rugby World Cup appearances. He was also part of the Leicester Tigers team that won the 2001 Heineken Cup European club championship, a rare feat for a Canadian.

His experience is a welcome respite to Velox, which is without the national players it boasted during Stanley’s time as player-coach from 2004 to 2008.

“It’s nearly 10 years to the day since I started coaching Velox the first time,” Stanley said. “The game’s changed a bit, but not too drastically. Really, coaching is about getting guys to buy in to your message. The players still want to win, to compete and to enjoy themselves.”

Stanley’s is also a familiar face during a time of transition as Velox RFC is set to relocate to Colwood permanently following the 2014-15 winter season. Mike Holmes and Mary Wyatt, prominent Velox players from the 1990s, have also come on as president and vice-president.

“Holmes and Wyatt approached me with what I feel like is a great vision for the club. This is a really good opportunity to build and grow a local team, another premiership team, hopefully in a year or two. And there’s

some challenges to that. I look forward to the chance to run this program and to steer it in a positive direction,” Stanley said.

Coach and squad have run a month’s worth of practices so far and it’s certainly a younger roster than the one Stanley came through with following his international career.

During Stanley’s time away from Velox he’s watched his daughters grow to ages six and seven, and built and led a strong single-A boys rugby program at Glenlyon Norfolk School to city championships.

Last year marked Stanley’s first stint back in the BCRU as he coached the first division UVic Norsemen. While the Norse-men are the Vikes’ second team, they’re also one of Canada’s top feeder programs, as the Vikes run a factory up to 100 players deep under respected coaches Doug Tate and Rick Farrally.

“Coaching with Tate was tre-mendous, he has a great mind I respect a whole lot,” Stanley said.

Meanwhile, it’s been an oscil-lating six years since Stanley was last with the Valhallians, and competed for the B.C. cham-pionship in 2007.

Velox came close to reaching the B.C. premier final again in 2009, but lost in extra time of the semifinal round to the Bays.

Then came relegation to B.C.’s first division, a tier below, which is where the club stands now.

It’s made it hard to recruit the promising talents who move here each season, committed to earning notice by the big cheese of Langford-based Rugby Canada.

As it stands, Velox will begin the Barnard Cup Island championship playing against the premier sides of the Castaway Wanderers, James Bay and Vikes, before jumping into the Cowichan Cup first division Island schedule.

If Velox can win the Island championship, it will earn a spot in the B.C. semifinal and chance at promotion to the top flight Canadian Direct Insurance Premier League along side CW, JBAA and UVic.

“Our focus will be to win the Island’s first division, make the B.C. playoffs, and get a chance to be promoted. We need to be at the next level,” Stanley said.

The Yukon is GMC Yukon territoryIt’s hard to believe but GMC has never held a vehicle launch for the Yukon full-sized SUV in the Yukon Territory, until now. Media from across Canada landed in Whitehorse and travelled around the territory recently in the all-new 2015 GMC Yukon model, ending up in the famous gold rush time capsule of Dawson City. From the wooden sidewalks to the gravel covered streets, this preserved part of history looks and feels much the way it would when gold was first discovered in 1896. The Yukon is also a great test for this big truck because of the immense stretches of unpopulated roads with smooth sections, potholes and loose gravel. The Yukon has it all, including spectacular vistas, wide-open space and spectacular scenery. Spending three days behind the wheel made me realize what a good job GMC has done with this truck, from fuel economy to creature comforts.

LooksLast year, GM introduced the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickup trucks. In fact, the Silver-ado won the North American Truck of the Year and the GMC Sierra won the AJAC truck of the year. With a solid basis, the engineers then went about building the full-sized SUVs based on the truck chassis. They include the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, the GMC Yukon and Denali, plus the Cadillac Escalade. These represent a huge profit centre for General Motors and they needed to get them right. The GMC Yukon is the most popular of the bunch with one-in-three full-sized SUV buyers choosing the Yukon, which is opposite to the United States where the Chevrolet trucks dominate. The top Yukon Denali model traditionally represents about 35 per cent of all Yukon sales but in the first few months of sales, it has captured more than 60 per cent.

Inside The long wheelbase model is an im-posing truck and a favourite of large families that need the third row of seating, plus a functional cargo area. The more popular short wheelbase offers a lot of room as well but when the third row of seats is employed the cargo area is diminished. On all but the base model, the second and third row of seats can be folded and store electronically. The Denali is exceptionally well equipped and shows great attention to detail, with the aluminum trim around the radio and heat controls, leather seating with French stitching. What the GMC Yukon offers over the Cadillac cousin is a simpler dashboard layout with traditional rotary knobs and buttons,

whereas the Cadillac has moved to touch sensitive panels that take time to master.

DriveThe Yukon is offered with two engine choices, the 5.3L 355hp V8 in the base SLE and middle SLT Yukon models and the 6.2L V8 in the Denali. This 6.2L engine is also used in the Escalade. There are several reasons to consider the Denali over the base 5.3L engine. The first is the inclusion of the magnetic ride control system that is also available in the Escalade. This sys-tem adapts the suspension up to 100 times per second and performed well on a variety of road surfaces in the Yukon. The second is a noise cancelling system that pumps sound waves through the Denali’s stereo system to help eliminate unwanted road and engine noise. The third reason is the mighty 6.2L engine with 420hp and 460 lb.-ft. of torque. Because this engine and the 5.3L have direct injection, variable value tim-ing and most importantly, cylinder management, the

V8 can switch off half of the eight cylinders and lean off the fuel mixture to reduce fuel consumption. With more than 1,000 km driven at a range of speeds, the real world consumption was 12L/100 km, close to the 11.4L/100 km official highway rating with the 6.2L engine. All the current Yukon models are equipped with a 6-speed automatic but the 6.2L engines will get an 8-speed this fall, with the 5.3L following next year. AWD is standard on all but the base model and these trucks can tow up to 3856 kg.VerdictThe Yukon is winner on all trim levels. I could find no fault but it is pricey. Starting at $51,800 for the SLE or $60,960 for the SLT and $75,540 for the Denali, this isn’t a cheap prospect. However, the Denali offers most of the same features as the more expensive Cadillac Escalade but is more use-friendly and less expensive.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – If you’re driving to Hell, what kind of car would you want to be in?An SUV? A sports car? One that if you never come back, at least your missing person’s report would list you last seen: “in something fast, flashy and awesome?”When my driving partner and I stumbled upon Hell, Michigan, or at least the sign that directed us that way, we were in the all-new, 2015 Hyundai Sonata, a sedan that is now seven generations strong.We had air conditioning in case it got really hot and directions via the navigation system in case we went to Hell and lost our way back. And comfort-able seats in case the crossing of the River Styx was long and arduous. Furthermore, we had the power to get us out of there if we needed to leave in a hurry.Okay, enough about Hell and back in the car… for 2015, the Sonata gives you two engine options; both of which have been revised for the seventh generation.The first is a peppy 2.4L, 4-cylinder with 185 horse-power and 178 lb-ft of torque.Then there’s the spirited, optional, 2.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engine variants are linked with a 6-speed automatic transmission.There’s a lot going on with Hyundai’s mid-size sedan. It’s built with an all-new chassis, which equates to a more comfortable ride, better handling and an overall improvement in NVH (Noise, Vibra-tions, Harshness.) To test that out, we took it to the streets of Ann Arbor in Michigan, as well as the

backcountry roads that have sweeping corners and tight turns.The first thing I noticed was how much better the handling was, especially when you have it in Sport mode. The 2015 Sonata gives the driver a choice of three drive modes. These modes work together with the sedan’s engine, transmission, and Motor-Driv-en Power Steering (MDPS) to suit different driver preferences. In Sport, powertrain responsiveness and heavier steering weight are both increased. The steering weight definitely comes in handy on the twisty parts of the road. In Normal mode, steering isn’t as responsive but better suited for urban environ-ments. And if you’re in a fuel saving mood, pop the

car into Eco mode. This softens throttle response and recalibrates transmission response so you get the most out of your tank. Speaking of steering, Hyundai mentions, “The 2015 Sonata’s steering wheel features an irregular shape with increased rim thickness and ergonomic grip rests. These subtle changes ensure more of the steering wheel surface remains in contact with the driver’s hands. In turn, the vehicle offers enhanced steering system feel, especially at high speed.”I’d agree with this. My fingers were comfortably placed at 9 and 3 o’clock and felt pretty good there.But it’s not just the driving modes and steering wheel that make the Sonata as popular as it is. The 2015 comes with all new styling inside and outside.

Let’s start with the cabin, since the driver will spend more time looking at a centre stack than they will the front, hexagonal grille.Featuring even higher quality materials than before, it’s softer to the touch and the layout is optimized for the driver. On the outside, you’ll see a family resemblance to the Sonata’s big broth-er, the Genesis. The character line is more pronounced, yet the cumulative look is more sophisticated and mature.It’s a tough segment to be in. When you have frontrunners like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Mazda6 and more, it can get pretty heated. But the Sonata remains cool and collected and has the goods to keep up with the best of them. The 2015 Hyundai Sonata has a starting MSRP of $23,999. GENERAL LOCAL ELECTION 2014

PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given to the electors of School District No. 61 (Greater Victoria) that nominations for the offices of nine (9) Trustees will be received at the offices of School District No. 61 (Greater Victoria), 556 Boleskine Road, Victoria, B.C. between the hours of 9:00 A.M. on Tuesday, the thirtieth (30th) day of September 2014 and 4:00 P.M. on Friday, the tenth (10th) day of October 2014 and during that period the nomination documents shall only be received on regular office days and hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). ber of a School District if they are a Canadian citizen, 18 years of age or older on general voting day (November 15th, 2014), a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before the day of nomination papers are filed, and not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other en-actment from being nominated for, being elected to or holding office, or to be otherwise disqualified by law.

Candidates shall be nominated in writing by two duly qualified electors of School District No. 61 (Greater Victoria). The nomination documents shall be in the form prescribed in the Local Government Act and School Act and shall state the name and residence of the person nominated in such a manner as to sufficiently identify such candidate. The nomination documents shall be subscribed to by the candidate. At the time of filing the nomination documents, the candidate shall also file

with the Chief Election Officer or a person designated by the Chief Election Officer a written disclosure, as required under the Financial Disclosure Act.

Moon festat Lambrick Park

The fourth annual Moon Festival Lantern Celebration takes place Saturday (Sept. 6) at the Gordon Head Recreation Centre.

The festival marks the Harvest Moon and is a cultural practice celebrated by many Asian cultures around

the world. Organizers aim to

foster understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity by sharing Asian cultural traditions in music, arts, dance and performance.

Children’s lantern making ($5) and a sampling of moon cakes and traditional green teas is also available.

The event culminates with outdoor large-scale lantern installations and an illuminated

lantern procession through the park.

This free event is open to all ages. Runs 3 to 7:30 p.m.

New choirneeds voices

Local musician Dale Rasmussen is seeking voices to join a startup jazz and contemporary choir.

The 19-and-older mixed group will rehearse Monday nights starting with Sept. 15, 7:30 p.m. at the Gordon Head United Church.

The choir will focus on jazz, swing, blues, soulful pop, gospel, and latin jazz, with music from The Great American Songbook and The Real Books.

The choir will offer opportunities for solo features and small ensemble work in duos, trios and quar-tets.

Previous group or solo singing experi-ence is required, as well as some reading ability and a good ear for harmony parts.

Mann Cup in sight for Shamrocks

After winning the Western Lacrosse Association championship by eliminating the Maple Ridge Burrards in five games last week, the Shamrocks are now in Ontario to compete for the Mann Cup national lacrosse championship.

It marks the second straight WLA championship for the Shamrocks, who dropped just one game in the playoffs, sweeping the New Westminster Salmonbellies in four games and losing just once to the Burrards.

The team is led by WLA playoff MVP and defender Tyler Hass. The title is a testament not just to Hass’ game but a tip of the hat to the Shamrocks’ core of fast, athletic defencemen.

The team hopes to win the Mann Cup on foreign turf against defending champs Six Nations Chiefs, who took the cup from them last year.

Reporting to the Lead Maintenance Operator, you will have an electrical background and assist in all aspects of operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs of the Kokish hydro generating station near Port McNeill, BC. While the primary skill set requirement is electrical, the position is multi-disciplinary. An interest and aptitude for mechanical and physical labour will be required. Other tasks include, but are not limited to: inspection, maintenance and repair of turbine and generators, high voltage switchyard, remote dams, and intake and control gates. The candidate will work on systems used in electronics, programming and electrical networks, such as, but not limited to, PLC, substation equipment, electrical lines, electrical protection, meters, communication links, SCADA systems and technical drawings. Duties also include standby and emergency call out, on a rotating basis and consequently, you must reside within a 30-minute drive from the Kokish hydro generating station.Candidate Pro le • Electrical trade certi cation and 5+ years of related experience. • Excellent working knowledge of PLCs, electronic and communication

Saanich’s waterfront prop-erties are among the most sought-after in the real estate market these days. And once acquired, a buyer often wants to invest in building or landscape projects that involve developing or reno-vating the property.

To dig or not to dig – that is the question that weighs heavily on waterfront prop-erty owners all over the southern tip of the Island.

Over the years people have discovered, or rather uncovered, artifacts and other vestiges that show this land is archaeologically sen-sitive.

These are links to the province’s past, so before any renovation or property development gets under way, the first step for the owner is to find out if their property contains an archae-ological site.

The province’s Archaeol-ogy Branch advises property owners to start by going to their municipality or regional district, who can access pro-vincial records of known archaeological site locations within their jurisdiction.

Municipalities will often have a map of known archae-ological sites, though they are typically not available to

the public.Then, if the owner finds

out that their property may contain an archaeological site, they must contact the provincial government’s Archaeology Branch, and hire a qualified archaeolo-gist who will confirm the site location and assess the risks that may be incurred by car-rying out the proposed proj-ect.

The discovery of any arti-

fact on a piece of property leads to calling in other ser-vices.

In the case of human remains being found, the Archaeology Branch would notify the Island Coroner’s Office and Saanich PD to determine if the remains are of concern.

If a cultural affiliation can be determined, the appropri-ate organization is contacted as well. As many remains

and artifacts are of aboriginal ancestry, this is often one or several First Nations.

An example of this occurred in 1996, when the skeletal remains of an aborig-inal woman were found dur-ing some excavation work at a private home in Oak Bay.

The archeological discov-ery lead to the coroner, the local police, members of the Songhees Nation, the munici-pality’s building department

and the province’s archaeol-ogy branch, who gathered to assess the next course of action.

Although archaeological digs can be costly and add unforeseen costs to your home improvement project, they can also provide valu-able insight into the history of our province. When in doubt, make the call to the B.C. Archaology Branch.

A Fair day in SaanichtonThousands of people took in the fun at the Saanich Fairground last weekend during the 147th annual Saanich Fair. The event caused traffic backups along the Pat Bay Highway for most of the weekend, but the event was another success. There were plenty of carnival rides, food vendors and even a cow milking demonstration.
