Music that sounds to be a cross between Appalachian fiddle music and contempo-rary two-step pumps from the speakers at Colwood Commu-nity Hall.

Pairs of women in hoop skirts and men in slick, embroidered shirts work with three other couples – their inward-facing start formation puts the ‘square’ in square dancing. The groups listen closely and move to instruc-tions called out by an equally festively dressed man with a microphone high on the stage.

The age group is mostly 50-over, although a few younger couples are here, twirling each other along with the rest.

“It’s been tough to generate new members over the years,” admits Saanich resident San-dra Rowan, president of the Victoria Country Cousins square dance club based in Royal Oak.

She is encouraged lately, however, having spotted an ad a while back about a workshop for recruitment and retention for dance clubs. Gaining new insight into how to bring in newcomers and keep them interested has helped boost the numbers of late.

“We’re starting to see younger people coming in,” says Rowan’s husband, Gor-don, who notes he and Sandra started dancing at age 50.

Another way clubs work to keep this social and health-promoting activity alive is to take groups to other clubs’ home halls, Sandra says.

When one club visits another with at least two full squares – eight couples – it enables them to “steal the banner” of the other and

forces the host club to recip-rocate the next time the first club hosts a dance.

Part of the reason for the gathering in Colwood this day was to celebrate the 40th anniversary of involvement in square and round dancing – the ballroom-style variant of

square dancing – for Denis and Sharon Kirkpatrick of Saa-nich. The couple are also part of the Country Cousins, which sent a number of people to the April 6 afternoon dance.

In the first two weeks of Saanich’s new garbage collection program, approximately 181 tons of kitchen and yard waste was diverted from the landfill. That equates to a 38 per cent diversion rate, which is right

on target with where Saanich public works hoped it would be when the program started the first week of April.

Dave McAra, manager of solid waste services, said the 181 tons was roughly 31 per cent kitchen scraps, while yard

waste made up the remaining 69 per cent.

He anticipates the diversion rate could rise, as Saanich residents become more accustomed to what organics can be recycled.

People with heads bowed and fingers slid-ing over a smartphone screen while walking, drinking coffee or wait-ing for a cab. At least one group in Victo-ria wonders and wor-ries that technology is beginning to promote exclusion.

“The idea is to pro-mote the mindful use of your handheld device,” said Mena Westhaver, one of five delegates from Leadership Vic-toria who created the project. “We know it’s out there so why not, instead of kibosh-ing technology … say ‘OK lets use it in a fun way, look up and take a photo of what you’re seeing.”

Look Up BC encour-ages people of all ages to reconnect with the local community, sur-roundings and the environment. The first Look Up BC Campaign (#LookUpBC) launched Feb. 15 and the photo contest runs to April 30 with a windup party May 9 at Uptown’s main plaza.

The concept is to reconnect people and their community, the Saanich woman said. “It’s to really bring back that engagement of talking and looking people eye to eye,” she said.

Participate by enter-ing photos of what you see when you look up. Share your view of the world through your handheld device and enter to win prizes. The grand prize is an Ultimate WildPlayer Package including a Monkido Aerial Adven-ture and Bungy Jump-ing donated by Wild-Play Element Parks.

The Look Up BC campaign is a partner-ship between a group of Leadership Victoria participants and the Saanich Youth Team.

“Youth are living and breathing the new wave of handheld devices. It’s just their third hand, they know no life with-out it, so they’re a great vehicle for us to get the voice out to that popu-lation,” Westhaver said. “Many are able to put it down. There is still a balance out there.”

Hockey loyalty is up for grabs

It’s playoff time in the NHL and hockey fans in two of Canada’s three largest cities are on the outside looking in.

Both the Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Maple Leafs could not squeeze into the postseason. For the Leafs, a colossal collapse in March spelled their demise. For the Canucks, a good first couple of months disintegrated into a season of poor play.

Both have quickly turned to big names in the game to help turn around their fortunes.

The Canucks have brought iconic former captain Trevor Linden back into the fold after he spent six years in the hockey wilderness. The Leafs have secured Brendan Shanahan from the league office, a hall-of-famer.

The big question now is whether these two greats on the ice, with grey hair sprinkling their former mullets, can turn around the fortunes of these franchises.

Linden’s task looks larger than that of Shanahan’s. The game has passed the Canucks. It’s all about speed and size now, and the Canucks’ core players, specifically the Sedin brothers, have never been known for fleetness of foot. They are smart, skilled and tougher than they are given credit for – they are not, however, fast.

One could argue neither of these big announcements from the Canucks or Leafs amount to a hill of beans. Even someone with a smidgeon of hockey sense could tell you the Leafs need reliable defencemen. Shanny going to play D? Does Linden have a time machine to get the speedy Pavel Bure back on the ice?

These announcements are window dressing, at best.

So, for whom do we cheer? The last remaining Canadian-based team, Les Habitants? No thanks. We will scour the rosters, find the team with the highest percentage of B.C. and Canadian-born players, and go that route.

This is the second of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the B.C. environment in our lifetime.

The Alberta oil industry’s Northern Gateway plan is to export bitumen to Asia via tankers from the B.C. coast. Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen.

A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years.

My first column discussed the light oil spill by the Exxon Valdez and the terrible toll it took on the Alaskan habitat and fishery. It also gave proof that a bitumen spill would be far worse. A bitumen spill would be almost completely unrecoverable because it would sink and stay on the bottom of our seabed.

The solution best for Canada is to build a refinery in Kitimat. I am promoting and financially backing this solution. It will convert the bitumen to very light fuels that would float and evaporate if ever spilled. There are other enormous benefits:

• There will be a major reduction in greenhouse gases. We will use new cutting-edge Canadian technology in our refinery. It will be so clean that in combination with oilsands extraction there will be less CO2 than in the huge conventional oilfields and refineries of Iraq and Nigeria. In other words, the Kitimat refinery will neutralize the extra greenhouse gases generated in Canada’s oilsands.

This refinery will be built in Asia if not in Kitimat, and if so it will emit

double the CO2 of our new design. This is the reason that Andrew Weaver of the B.C. Green Party is in favour of a Canadian refinery.

• An Asian refinery will also generate 100 train cars a day of dirty coke (much fouler than B.C. coal)

which will be subsequently burnt in the atmosphere to create power. The Kitimat refinery will not result in the production of any coke. As we all live on one planet, it is far better for the global environment to build this refinery in Canada.

• Construction will create 6,000 jobs in B.C. for five years. Operations at the refinery will result in more permanent jobs

than any project has ever created in B.C. with approximately 3,000 direct jobs. These will be highly paid permanent jobs. These jobs will be available for the life of the refinery which should be in excess of 50 years. In addition there will be thousands of other jobs created in spinoff local petrochemical companies and in indirect employment throughout the province.

• The Canadian and provincial governments, local regional districts and municipalities, and many First Nations will share in billions of new tax dollars each year.

Unfortunately, our Canadian oil companies are not interested in building a new major refinery. They are focused on extraction which is more profitable than refining. One of them challenged me to spearhead the refinery myself, so I am doing that.

We have a solid business plan and

as a consequence, Chinese banks and other institutions are prepared to lend most of the funds required to build the greenest and most efficient refinery in the world. We are moving ahead with engineering design and environmental work. We will also build a safe pipeline from Alberta to the refinery, with the active participation of First Nations.

Modern pipelines can be built and operated safely. Leak data is available for everyone to see on Canadian and U.S. government websites and it proves recently constructed pipelines are not leaking. Furthermore some of the best pipeline companies in the world are based in Canada.

In addition we will build a fleet of new tankers, powered by LNG rather than Bunker C oil, to transport the refined products to Asia. This way we know the tankers will be state-of-the-art and as safe as possible. The fleet will be owned by a company based in B.C. so it cannot shirk its legal liability if there ever is a spill at sea.

Let me be up front about my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in B.C. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers.

If you agree that we should not put bitumen in tankers please contact your local MP and say so. The Canadian government makes a decision on Northern Gateway next month.

he Craigflower Bridge Replacement Project is nearing completion and the community of

View Royal is ready to celebrate!Admirals Road, from the Island

Highway in View Royal to Gorge Road in Saanich, will be re-opened to vehicular traffic in early to mid-May.

Prior to the opening of Admirals Road and the bridge, the two communities are hosting a modest ceremony this Saturday, April 26th, at 10 a.m., with representatives from the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

The community is invited to join the ceremony. It will take place on the

sidewalk on the east side of the new bridge. Parking is available along Gorge Road, west of Admirals Road, as well as in the perimeter areas of the Canadian Tire parking lot, located at the corner of Island Highway and Admirals Road.

Replacement of the 80-year-old bridge was necessary due to safety concerns for bridge users, including drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.

The bridge project includes construction of new sidewalks, bike lanes, safety features, improved lighting and new road surface on Admirals Road from Island Highway to Gorge Road, plus installation of storm water

treatment facilities, rain gardens, replacement of the sanitary sewer, storm drains and water mains, and boulevard landscaping.

The new Craigflower Bridge will have a projected lifespan of 75 years and is designed as a “lifeline” structure meaning it will remain usable following a major earthquake.

HISTORY

While the previous Craigflower Bridge had been dutifully serving local residents for 80 years, it wasn’t the first bridge that spanned that section of the picturesque Gorge Waterway.

In fact, the first Craigflower Bridge opened in 1855, connecting the historic Craigflower Manor to the south and the Craigflower Schoolhouse to the north.

Replacement wooden bridges were constructed as time went on and two instances were reported over the following years of vehicles falling through as the bridges deteriorated. The last instance occurred in 1932 and the bridge at that time was demolished.

Passengers were ferried across the

Waterway until the next timber bridge opened in 1933, featuring overhead street lights that came on automatically at sunset. The provincial government had jurisdiction over the bridge and was responsible for maintenance and repair until May 1998, when ownership was transferred jointly to the municipalities of Saanich and View Royal.

The bridge remained substantially unchanged until recent years, when it was deemed no longer safe for excessive vehicle loads. It also had very narrow sidewalks on each side, no provision for bicycles, and the railings and deck were in very poor condition.

WHO KNEW?

▶ The Craigflower Bridge is approximately 120 metres long and connects the municipalities of Saanich and View Royal. It carries about 15,000 vehicles per day, including almost 1,500 trucks.

▶ The new Craigflower Bridge and Admirals Road upgrades include:

▷ One lane northbound into Saanich, and two lanes southbound into View Royal;

▷ Wide sidewalks and bike lanes on the bridge and approach roads;

▷ Stormwater treatment for the bridge and approaches;

▷ Improved street lighting and safety features;

▷ Provision for herring fishers on the bridge; and

▷ Approach road upgrades from Island Highway to Gorge Road.

▶ The new Craigflower Bridge is a “lifeline” structure meaning it will remain operational following a major earthquake.

▶ Environmental considerations of the project included: protection of herring and salmon; bird nesting and breeding; rehabilitation of salt marsh; and relocation of native Olympia Oysters.

▶ The Craigflower Bridge Replacement Project involved working on land on the traditional territory of the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations. At the north end of the Craigflower Bridge is Kosapsum Park, the location of an important village and ceremonial site occupied for thousands of years.

Splashes of radiant orchid, faux fur and wallpaper are all on the agenda, though per-haps not all at once, for the Home Expo at West Shore rec.

Danisha Drury and Amy McGeachy, known individually for their design talents and together for appear-ances on CHEK TV’s Design District, will make homeowners feel safe delving into these trends of 2014.

The duo hosts Kitchen and Bathroom Design and Design Trends for 2014 talks during this year’s April 25 to 27 Home Expo.

“We’ll talk a lot about design in gen-eral and accessories,” says McGeachy of the second presentation. “That’s where people

really spend the major-ity of their money in renovations. It has to be functional and have good form, but then you do want it to look

nice and have style.” Wallpaper is a top

trend they’ll hit on dur-ing presentations at the show.

“Some of the paper they’re making now, it’s so beautiful, easy to apply and easy to remove and they’re gorgeous. I don’t see it ever going back out of style again. It’s come way too far. It’s not your grandmother’s wallpaper,” Drury says.

Hues come in the deepest plums and teals to gold banana leaf, with thick sound proofing material and murals that make you think you’re in Mar-rakech, or on Madison Avenue in New York.

The hottest colour this year is radiant orchid (a fuchsia).

“We’ll be giving people tips and ideas for incorporating that colour without going out and buying a radi-ant orchid couch. My take is choose trends that work for you, not just choosing it because it’s a trend.”

These design pro-fessionals will outline ways to select accesso-ries that can be easily remedied if need be.

“Try it out and seeing how it works for you,” McGeachy says. “A lot of people have to think resale as well. Things that are your decor, that’s fine if it appeals to the masses.”

Poor layout and design waste money so they’ll help audiences look at where to go high-end and where to save a nickel.

Many would think faux fur should be lim-ited to toss cushions, but a chair, or perhaps even a larger piece (which could show up at the Expo) make a statement, and it’s a good one in 2014. After all, as Drury says, “faux fur is huge.”

New Golf family offers quality at the right priceThe new seventh generation VW Golf arrives later this spring with a 2015 model designation.I have already had a chance to drive three examples of the new edition in Europe so I can offer you a sneak peek at what this very popular VW has going for it before it arrives here. The all-new car might look like the previous Golf but it is built on a platform that is shared across the VW group and represents a massive investment for the German manufacturer. This new platform, called MQB, enables the engineers to build all kinds of new products, be they bigger, smaller, wider or taller. What went into the design of the Golf represents a big step forward for Volkswagen as the latest model is 100kg lighter than the outgoing car but it is bigger, stiffer and safer than before. LooksIt could be argued that the new Golf looks too much like the older model but interacting with this new product quickly displays a level of refinement and finish that might be found in an upmarket Audi product. (This MQB platform is shared with the all-new Audi A3). Starting at $18,995, the base Golf is priced right in the heart of the compact market but this car sports a fully independent suspension, direct injection turbocharged engine and more power than much of the competition, at 170hp. The Golf GTI is my personal favourite due to the bad-boy looks, bigger wheels and improved engine and suspension. It starts at $27,995. The hot-hatch Golf R will arrive about a year after

the Golf and GTI and will come in at roughly the same price as the last R, right around $40,000 but fully loaded.InsideThe upside to having a slightly bigger platform is interior space and the cabin of the latest Golf does feel bigger, especially side-to-side. The centre console is wider and the dash is fitted with all-new switches and dials. Once again, the feel and look is almost Audi quality. Having a chance to drive the base car all the way up to the Golf R showed just how good the base car is. The only difference is the sportier seats

and splashier trim on the more expensive cars, but the overall design is the same from car to car and all exemplify the simple, yet elegant approach VW takes with all its interiors. DriveGone is the old 2.5-litre. 5-cylinder, replaced by an all-new 1.8-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder base engine. This engine too produces 170 but is more efficient, responsive and features state of the art technology. In the compact set, this kind of technology is unheard of at the roughly $19,000 asking price. Taking it up a notch is the legendary Golf GTI, now with 210hp from a new 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder. I had a shot driving this last year in Austria and I can say without question, this combination is fantastic. The Golf R is the ultimate Golf with roughly 300hp and an all wheel drive system. The same system is used in the all-new Audi S3 but this car comes fully loaded and will be roughly $4,000 less than the starting price of

the S3. A smart shopper might want to wait for the R over the S.

Verdict

This new Golf family is set to take on some very established players in the compact segment. With a hatchback design, this car has always been a more practical design than sedans like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. With superb road manners, advanced engines and German engineering, the starting price looks like a winner. A big reason for this is the Golf is assembled in Mexico and these cars come into Canada without duty, (Thanks NAFTA) so VW added more content and kept the price low. The good news for diesel lovers is that the TDI en-gine will be available right out of the gate and now represents about 50 percent of Golf sales. This engine too has been modified to make it as fuel efficient as possible. All told, the Golf is more polished car than much of the competition and offers a trim level and price for all types of buyers, from basic to flat-out performance.

Imports provide most sizzle in New YorkThere was more sizzle in my New York steak dinner than on the show floor at the Big Apple’s international auto show.It seems the Big Four shot their lightning bolts at the preceding Detroit and Los Angeles auto extravaganzas and left it to the import manufacturers to dazzle here.Nissan did not disappoint with the unveiling of a classy looking crossover in the shape of the all-wheel drive 2015 Nissan Murano. The mid-size model first showed up in 2002 and this new model marks the birth of the third-gener-ation. The Nissan-named V-Motion nose and boomerang-shaped tail lights ensure it makes an impression on the observer, coming and going, and distinguishes itself from its rivals.Inside, up to five passen-gers can expect more of a luxury ride than they might have enjoyed in the outgoing version – heated and cooled front seats will impress those upfront. A production mod-el version is expected later in the year, which suggests the L.A. show might benefit from that timetable.Any new Toyota Camry is an instant hit, especially in North America where it’s been the best selling car

for 12 years. Despite that, the Japanese manufacturer launched an all-new 2015 model, just three years after introducing a redesign.It incorporates design touches now appearing in sibling models, including a deeper grille that more resembles an upmarket Lexus. Interior materials are upgraded and a large central display matches the design trend of its compet-itors. Two trims are added; a sporty XSE with some luxury touches and a Hybrid SE. Toyota sticks with its 2.5-litre, four-cylinder, and 3.5-litre, six-cylinder engines plus its Hybrid Synergy Drive.Hyundai would like to put a serious dent in the Toyota Camry success story with its own mid-size sedan – the redesigned Sonata. It’s likely the introduction of a sharp looking Sonata in 2011 helped prompt Toyota into taking a serious look at upping the ante in the Camry. Other compet-itors have also risen to the challenge. Now the seventh-generation, newly styled, sharper looking 2015 Sonata raises the bar again with improved ride and handling plus advanced driver assistance and safety

equipment. Unlike the Camry, the Sonata stays with purely four-cylinder engines. Stan-dard is a 2.4-litre power

plant and a turbocharged 2.0 is an option.The one domestic man-ufacturer that did show up with something more

exciting than the rest was Jeep, which introduced the compact Renegade. It is the iconic brand’s first foray into the small SUV segment.Its funky looks and fuel efficiency should make it an urban dweller hit but it also boasts best-in-class off-road capability, which may just bring in buyers from the growing outdoor adventure seekers.Two engine choices: a

2.4-litre Tigershark engine with MultiAir2 paired to the segment’s first nine-speed automatic transmission, or a 1.4-litre MultiAir Turbo engine with six-speed man-ual transmission.Prices for all of the above closer to launch when pencils have been sharp-ened and each figure out how they can undercut competitors.

Safe on two wheels Like education, the motorcycle gear you wear is vital to your safety. Just ask someone who has had a spill. Here’s an example. A colleague of mine caught gravel around a bend while riding in the States. She hit the guardrail then passed out. She was then airlifted to hospital where she suffered a minor concus-sion, and a few bruises and scrapes. Even the doctors were amazed at her condition.It was said to her that her gear likely saved her life. She was wearing leathers, gloves, protective boots, and a helmet. Granted, not everyone is as lucky, but you get my point. Those who have experi-enced an accident weren’t thinking, “Gee, I really wish I wore my shorts and flip flops.”When I ride, I’m in full garb. Depending on what type of riding I’m taking on that day, I’ll dress appropriately. I’m an advocate of riding gear. All of it. Helmet: The government in British Columbia only enforces one piece of safety equipment when riding on the road. That’s a helmet. If you’re not going to invest any money in anything else, protect your noggin. I’m not suggesting buying the most expensive and fanciest lid out there because most of us don’t have thousands of dollars for a carbon fibre helmet. Make sure it fits properly. Local motorcycle shops generally have trained staff in fitting helmets. They’re supposed to fit snugly. I’ve been told that even the cheapest helmet that fits perfectly will do more for you than an expensive one that’s just not right for you.You only have one head. Use it and protect it.Jackets: There are a couple of common materials used in jackets: leather and textile. There are more, but the two listed are quite prominent. Each have their own benefits. Textile jackets tend to be more breathable, while leather has been said to be better protection. You can argue each case.Some jackets come with armor (added protection in the back, elbows, and shoulders.) Some don’t. I suggest armor only because it protects you that much more. However, there are accessories you can purchase if your jacket you choose doesn’t come with it built in. Pants: Leather, textile and

Kevlar jeans are common riding pants. Kevlar jeans are getting better and better as more research and development is conducted. I say, if you’re going for the “cool” look, spend a little more for the added protection. Boots: Not everyone will want heavily reinforced boots. That’s fine. But if you’re going to ride, get leather footwear that at least covers your ankle-bone.What’s great about the in-dustry now is the availabil-ity of cool riding shoes that have reinforced heels and ankle protection. You can look good and be protect-ed. Bonus.Gloves: There are a few styles of gloves. There are ones that cover just your hands/fingers and ones called gauntlet gloves that cover past your wrists. Some gloves also have re-inforced points with carbon fibre to prevent further damage. Like with a helmet, and the rest of your gear, get gloves that fit you, like, a glove. Too much room can cause blisters. Too little

room cuts off circulation.Off-Road: If you’re an adventure-touring rider – or would like to be – textile is the way to go. This mate-rial is much better for the changing weather you’ll encounter on the road less travelled. It’s breathable and generally has a few layers. So you can take them off or put them on when needed.Dirt Biking: Just because you fall in dirt doesn’t mean it can’t hurt. Wearing elbow and knee pads are recommended. A lot of dirt riders will also add a chest protector/breastplate, gloves, boots and goggles. Along with their helmet.Accessories: If you want added peace of mind, that’s available, too. I ride with a back protector with built-in kidney protectors that I put on under my jacket. I look like a Ninja Turtle, but I don’t care. A full chest protector is also available.These are the basics to getting started. Bottom line, you won’t regret being fully suited on the road.

“I’d knocked off 200,000 km. Hopefully, she’s too naïve to notice”

I surprised my family with a trip to Hawaii. They didn’t have a clue how I paid for it. But they thought I was the best dad in the world. While we were away, I bought a car on eBay. It had over 350,000 km on it. No one will want to buy this piece of junk, I thought.Unless. I could just lower the mileage on it a little bit. And it won’t hurt anybody, right?One problem – I had no idea how to change an odometer*. But as it turns out, it’s much easier than I’d expected. With an odometer tool, I changed the reading to 164,500 km. Still a lot, but less than half the real clicks. My ad: “Minivan – old but in great condition! Only 164,500kms - it sat in my garage for the last 5 years. Must sell. If you’re looking for an older, but reliable and safe vehicle, call my cell and we’ll negotiate.”Looking back, I realized I’d knocked almost 200,000 km off the vehicle. But I shined it up and put some newer used tires on it so they wouldn’t give away its true condition.Will this get me in trouble? I wondered. I wasn’t doing anything wrong, really – this just gives me a chance to make some more money on the vehicle. I got a phone call from a young single mom who could only afford an older vehicle. We decided to meet at her son’s school. As I was showing her the car, I noticed the carpet, the door handles and the pedals kind of gave away its true condition. Hopefully she’s too naïve to notice, I thought.

Forty minutes later, our exchange was complete. I probably made an extra $2,000 because of the odometer! If I’d only done this to all the other cars I sold!Suddenly, my mind began processing the implications. That minivan was pretty much at the end of its life. That young mom is expecting the vehicle to last her for a few more years. At best, I see it lasting one more.Parts will start failing, calling for expensive repairs. I’m certain she doesn’t have the money for that. All I’m hoping is that it doesn’t break down on the highway. Maybe there was a reason I never did it before. Maybe, just maybe, I had a conscience up until now.

Confessions of a Curber

Camping is fun and most of us have done it at one time or another. Of course, it can be miserable without

a decent tent that is easy to set up and keeps you dry and comfortable. One of the hottest products

on the market today is a “truck tent.” Napier Enter-prises developed it and it makes sense for those peo-

ple that like to go camping, but do not like to sleep on the ground. The truck tent is exactly as it sounds: a

tent for your truck. Vintage games and associated memorabilia to the coolest new bits of technology will lure hobby fans from kids to high-end collectors and those just out for a drool at Victoria’s 13th Ultimate Hobby & Toy Fair on Sunday.

Naturally there will be those who show up at Pearkes recreation in costume for the affair designed for families.

“It’s a selling show,” said B Woodward of Cherry Bomb Toys, which hosts the event twice a year. “We run a charity carnival in the back and we run a silent auction for the MS Society. We wanted to have the community involved … Everybody feels good about what they’re doing.”

Even the food vendors donate a portion of proceeds back to the charity of their choice.

“We want to do things to show that the collecting community does care. We’re happy to help any way we can,” Woodward said. “It’s a family oriented fun show. There’s a lot of conventions out there … if you want to go buy some toys, get some great deals. Ours is the mom-and-pop show and we have all kinds of goodies for everybody.”

The hobby show is April 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. general admission for $5 for those 13 and older. Early bird admission from 8 to 9 a.m. is $15 at the door.

The shows have raised $23,000 charities over the last six years.

In the latest Saanich instalment of the Vancou-ver Island Pro Wrestling storyline, Lak Siddartha will fight tooth and nail to retain his title at Velox Rugby Club this week

The pro wrestler earned the VIPW champion-ship belt last fall, defeating B.J. Laredo at the same venue. He’s fended off a few different attempts to topple him since, including a gimmick match against Laredo in Duncan. “I still retained the title even though I was left in a bloody mess,” he says.

A Feb. 14 event against No. 1 contender Creator Von Slasher saw him retain the title when both wrestlers were down and the match was thrown out with no winner.

Siddartha faces Scott Steele tonight.“He’s a high-flier. He’s got the speed advantage

that’s for sure,” Siddartha said. “But I’ve got power and size.”

About 12 to 15 wrestlers are expected to hit the ring for a hard-core battle royale where all compet-itors, with the exception of the two main fighters, will fight to be the last man standing, and become No. 1 contender. Other matches will feature Krof-ton, Eddie Osbourne, Riea Von Slasher, Cremator, Laredo and more.

The fledgling VIPW launched last September and organizers plan to hold more events as a greater following develops in Victoria.

The event is tonight, April 25 in the Velox club-house (3957 Gordon Head Rd.). Doors open at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15 at the door.

With the benefit of time and life experience, most adults can remember at least one teacher who impacted their life for the better. Mine were in music (thank you, Keith Fraser) and phys-ed (likewise, Ed Ashmore), who laid the groundwork for life-long interests in both areas.

In our Great Teachers series, offered with partners Staples and Thrifty Foods, we encour-age readers to nominate their favourite teachers for special recognition. Today we’ve asked community leaders to share e x p e r i e n c e s with educators from their past.

Frank Leonard, mayor of Saa-nich – I attended nine schools in 12 school years since my father’s employer transferred us around B.C. I often didn’t get involved in school activi-ties since I hardly knew any-one. However, my senior high school years at Mount View High on Carey Road in Saan-ich were terrific and I attribute that to principal Don Smyth and vice-principal Ken Brown. They ‘recruited’ me into activities like student council, refereeing the student/teacher soccer game, reading the morning announce-ments and running the Miss Mount View pageant. I loved being active, yet it was the sup-port of Don and Ken that made it happen. I credit them with the experiences that gave me

the confidence to later become involved in our community.

Tania Miller, music director, Victoria Symphony Orchestra – I grew up in a farming com-munity of 1,000 people (Foam Lake, Sask.). In high school I had a social studies teacher named Ian Cooper who had an incred-ible passion for people and his-tory. He had a big impact on me for the way he taught us about being a member of society and passionately following our dreams,. He also started a band at school and taught everybody how to play guitar. There was that side of him that embraced the arts, which appealed to me, but he taught us to be passion-ate in a variety of different ways. I think the profound thing that he did was he made us want to be the best we could be. As a result of his impact and others’, I’d say probably 80 per cent of our class went to university.

Guy Dauncey, Victoria author, sustainable futurist – I was at a boarding school in Eng-land (from age 13 to 18), and the music master there, his name was Tony Brown, was by far the greatest inspiration to me. Not only did he give us the great-est musical education, on Friday evenings he would invite us over for tea and talk philosophy with us. He would ask things like, ‘Do we have free will?’ and however we would answer, he’d proceed to point out precisely why the opposite was true. The lesson was, you’ve got to think things out for yourselves. We didn’t have any other classes that went remotely near (talking about) philosophy or the big questions

of life, and the realization that the big questions of life don’t have black and white answers.

Lillian Szpak, City of Lang-ford councillor – I was an Air Force brat and we moved around every two to three years. My Grade 7 teacher at RCAF Centra-lia (Ontario) was Mr. Heimrich. He stands out for me because he encouraged me to write cre-atively and to write poetry. He treated me like an adult, as if I had something to say that could affect others. He really shaped me that way. He was very candid and would share his own experi-ence and joke about what was going on at home, so he was real to me. Teachers in my era were authoritative, but he was so dif-ferent. Having the freedom to write what you want and how you want, and to share that with-out being judged, was really out-side of the box.

Adam Olsen, interim B.C. Green Party leader – I was only ever in one of his classes, Grade 11 math at Stelly’s, but the example set by Peter Mason has always resonated with me. I remember him saying, ‘One year I’m going to take a class of students to Mount Everest’ and I remember it reverberated through the school. People had to think about ‘what is Everest?’ It’s the highest peak of human achievement. And they went. I remember he came back and said ‘I’m going to build a climb-ing wall,’ and he was one of the people responsible for the devel-opment of Boulders Climbing Gym, which continues to have a huge impact on our commu-nity and on our kids in Central Saanich. It’s always had a very, very significant impact on me. It’s about setting a goal, no mat-ter how impossible it may seem to be, then going out and getting it. It’s a great analogy for life.

Just two races in, Bill Okell of Saanich is off to a good start in his bid to qualify for the Sports Car Club of America’s national champion-ships.

Driving a modified MG Midget in the F production class, Okell posted fifth- and sixth-place finishes in the

events held at Thun-derhill Raceway Park road course near Sac-ramento, Calif. The results left him sitting fifth in the point stand-ings for the SCCA’s Western Conference, heading into this week-end’s races in Los Angeles.

“Every time we went

out we just got faster and better,” said Okell, who was invited to drive a car owned by fellow racer Chuck Hor-ton. Both are under the umbrella of the San Francisco-based Huf-faker Engineering team.

“I think they were content that I could be competitive and

brought the car back in one piece and didn’t wreck it,” Okell said.

The conference schedule lists six race weekends with two races each. Drivers need a minimum of four race starts to be eligible for nationals – known as the run-offs – and the top 10 in the standings qualify. The run-offs happen Oct. 7 to 12 at Mazda Race-way Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif.

Okell hopes to get his third and fourth races in this weekend, but will be in tough com-petitively, as the L.A. races tend to attract the largest number of drivers in his cate-gory. Regardless of his results, he plans to run at Seattle International Raceway next month and possibly Portland in July.

With the run-offs being held on the West Coast for the first time in 45 years, many driv-ers from California, Oregon and Washing-ton, and a few from B.C., have put together ambitious race sched-ules for 2014, Okell said.

On a bright April afternoon, Shel Suzuki and Brooklyn the bulldog soak in the sun on the deck of their Fisherman’s Wharf float home.

A harbour taxi packed with pas-sengers cruises by and just up the dock, tourists hold up iPads and cameras to take a piece of this scene home.

Inside Suzuki’s kitchen, a two-man work crew is in the final stages of installing the kitchen cabinets back around the hot water heater – that unexpectedly gave out earlier in the day – because today they learned that the cabinets were actually built around the tank. Just another exam-ple of how float home life, particu-larly life in Suzuki’s ultra compact, 347 square-foot floating “hobbit house” is just like life on land, with a twist.

“It’s like any other home,” Suzuki says. “It’s just maintenance. But you can’t find people who’ve worked on float homes before, so this is their first time working on a really small space.”

Suzuki was drawn to the close community following a 2010 visit to Victoria, when along with friends, they spotted the float home, which happened to be for sale, and posed for a photo in front of it. Suzuki was living in Winnipeg at the time and was taken by the copper-roofed float home, dubbed Ziggaratus by previ-ous owners.

“Within two months I bought the place and moved out here – with-out seeing the inside at all. It was just a gut feeling. I saw the front and thought: ‘I think I could live here.’”

Suzuki’s story is a common one

among the 33-home community. One Edmonton import made a deal to purchase his home from the park-ing lot when he learned it was up for sale during a visit to Victoria. Before Suzuki would experience the warm-weather joys that generally attract new residents to the lifestyle: kayak-ing off the deck and riding the water taxi downtown with Brooklyn – they had to experience a winter on the water without adequate weather-proofing.

“Because I came in January and didn’t know what the weather was like, I didn’t have a fireplace. I had single pane windows that weren’t great. I had doors that didn’t fit. It was a very cold winter – so cold I had to sleep with a pillow case on my head.”

The following month came a tsu-nami warning from the earthquake in Japan. The float homes were evacuated within five minutes in the middle of the night. Last Febru-

ary, a homeowner to the community couldn’t sleep through the sound of their wind chimes, and when he got out of bed to silence the noise, he spotted his neighbour’s home floating towards the Inner Harbour, secured by just one rope.

Eventually, the residents woke up, heeded the advice to stay inside, and with the help of several neigh-bours, secured the home once more.

Suzuki simply laughs at the few close calls they’ve been through and reiterates the need to check and tighten lines regularly. Maintenance costs, such as regular upkeep of the float on which the home is built, are in line with those of living on land. The cost of moorage, paid by square-footage, of the base is comparable to strata fees for condo owners.

Guy Crozier, president elect of the Victoria Real Estate Board sold float homes at Westbay Marine Village in Esquimalt when the community launched in the early 2000s.

The homes have always had a romantic appeal, the Sleepless in Seattle effect, Crozier says.

“A lot of float homes, you can park your car in a covered parking lot, walk down the dock to your float home and jump on your pad-dle board or in your canoe and go out right from your back door. I think that’s a pretty cool thing to have.”

Since Fisherman’s Wharf isn’t gated like Westbay, residents are in constant contact with tourists drawn to the lifestyle.

“Sometimes in the summer, we’ll leave chalk out here and people will write where they’re from. You’ll come home and see a hundred dif-ferent places in the world,” Suzuki says. “Advice I give people, that if you want to live down here and it’s your gut to live down here, then you should do it.”

A trio of massive rocks on Rog-ers Avenue resurfaced for spring as volunteers ripped, sawed and stripped away the invasive plants that grew around them at Bruce Hutchison Park.

“At the beginning of the day you couldn’t see any of the rocks behind us. It was covered in complete bushes,” said Kee-gen Payne, one of five interna-tional Pearson College students who volunteered for the intense clean-up.

The five students from the Metchosin international school hail from the Northwest Terri-tories, Botswana, Venezuela, Senegal and Vanuatu. They were completing their man-dated “project week” in part-nership with the North Quadra Residents’ Association and Saa-nich parks department to help restore the Quadra-area park’s Garry oak ecosystem.

“We’ve organized a week of volunteering every day … that’s our service project for the year,” Payne said.

Bruce Hutchison Park, between Rogers and Lily ave-nues, is a small remnant Garry Oak area overgrown with inva-sive species such as English ivy, Daphne laureolas and Scotch broom.

“It’s totally enveloped with invasive species,” said resident’s

association member Lauraine Derman, as her husband, Coun. Vic Derman, sweatily fought with a root system nearby. “(This partnership with Pearson College) is a one-off, but we’re hoping to repeat this each year.”

The neighbourhood volun-teers were also joined by mem-bers of the 1st Cedar Hill and 1st Douglas Cub scouts.

“Pearson students are trained in environmental stewardship. They come sort of certified,” Lauraine said.

“It’s a lot of work; some of these weeds don’t want to come out so it’s a struggle, but it’s defi-nitely good work and it’s good exercise,” Payne said. “We’re having a great time.”
