Leaving behind a life of crime

Travis PatersonNews staff

For the better part of the last decade, Laura was a prolific thief, regularly dodging security and retail staff in various Greater Victoria malls.

But it wasn’t until Saanich police officers caught her red-handed earlier this year that the 19-year-old decided to begin changing her life.

“I had been stealing since I was 11,” says Laura, using a pseudonym to protect her identity. “It started as a means to live. I did it out of survival and then it became habit. That’s not an excuse, that’s how it felt. If I needed something, I had to get it and keep my substance-abusing mother from being abusive.”

Laura told her story to the Saanich News sur-rounded by supporters at SaanichPD this week as part of the nationwide Restorative Justice week, which wraps up Sunday.

Since her arrest, Laura has nearly completed the restorative justice program, a co-initiative run by the John Howard Society of Victoria and Saanich Police Department.

“I knew I’d get caught one day,” she says. “You’re not a good thief if you don’t think you’ll get caught.”

As she entered her teenage years, Laura became a skilled thief, she says, referring to her criminal life in the past tense.

Continued from Page A1

“I see it now as perfect timing. I’d stolen from pretty much every store at Tillicum,” Laura says.

Still, Laura was frustrated at her treatment when she was arrested by three Saanich police officers. She was put in handcuffs and taken into custody while her friend, 18, was queried but eventually let go.

Through the restorative justice process, Laura came face to face with the arresting officers, where she learned what they were doing is normal, she says.

“It was jail time or the restorative justice program, but I (still) came into it with a mistaken perception of cops,“ she says. “The people I used to be around talked about the police as the enemy. You would hear bad stories about police and their abuse, how rough they are for no reason.”

The restorative justice pro-cess starts with a mediating case worker, in this case Nathalie Down

of the John Howard Society. Down first gathers the offender (and/or victim) with the arresting police officer(s) for a round table discus-sion.  A set of conditions for the offender are then agreed on. Once those conditions are met, the pro-cess is concluded.

In Laura’s case, it was the first time she’d been held accountable for her actions, a crucial element which leads to personal growth, self respect, respect for others and forgiving, Down says.

“I was caught at a store a few years ago, but there was no accountabil-ity. When my mom came to pick me up, she only laughed it off and said ‘You can’t get caught,’” Laura says.

There are a few requirements remaining for Laura before she completes the program. The main one is an upcoming session where she’ll present a lecture to police officers so they can gain insight into Laura’s situation and her mindset at the time of her crimes.

The other requirement is to meet

with a mentor, which in Laura’s case is not a problem.

“I love hanging out with my men-tor. It’s great,” she says.

Victims, too, play a key role in the restorative justice program. Nicole, a 40-year-old nurse, was assaulted in Saanich last January. She chose to have the assailant complete the restorative justice program rather than press charges.

“I chose it [restorative justice] because I didn’t want to see them repeat the behaviour that caused the assault,” Nicole said. “I wanted to see personal accountability and acknowledgement and a sense of retribution, to see them taking steps to correct the behaviour.”

It meant coming face to face with her attacker during the meet-up with police officers and Down, though victims can send a surro-gate to read their statement or sit in the next room and listen, Down says.

Saanich police anti-graffiti man-ager Const. Mark Pamminger has

worked with three different offend-ers to clean up graffiti around Saa-nich in other restorative justice cases this year,

“I wear plain clothes,” Pam-minger says. “It’s on a first name basis and they sit in the front seat, not the back, so there’s no intimi-dation. The sessions start with me doing 90 per cent of the talking and end with them doing 90 per cent of the talking. The community sees them as the people who come to help out, not as offenders.”

POLICENEWSIN BRIEF

Brazen theftscares shopper

An 80-year-old woman was shaken but not physically harmed when a thief opened her passenger door and stole a wallet as the woman unlocked her car last Thursday at Uptown Shopping Centre.

The thief quickly ran away with the wallet, which contained credit cards, ID and a small quantity of cash.

“This type of theft is very bold, and thankfully uncommon,” said Saanich police Sgt. Steve Eassie.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, in his late 20s to early 30s with a medium build. At the time of the theft, he was wearing a black jacket and dark pants. CCTV footage unfortunately did not capture the incident, Eassie said.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to call Saanich police at 250-475-4321 or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Laptop scamshorts man $800

A Saanich man is short a Macbook Air laptop, worth about $800, after an online buyer scammed him by paying with a fraudulent bank draft.

“People selling used items should always make attempts to confirm the method of payment, either by only accepting cash, or by attending a financial institution to confirm that a method of payment is legitimate,” said Saanich police Sgt. Harry Schamhart with the Financial Crimes Section.

The buyer is described as an Asian female, about five-foot-six and 100 pounds. She went by the name of Meggi.

The teen is now in the final stages of the restorative justice process, a joint partnership between SaanichPD and the John Howard Society that serves as an alternative to formal criminal charges.

Did you know?n Restorative justice deals with crime by promoting accountably, meaningful reparation, and addressing root causes of harmful behaviour.

n Based on aboriginal beliefs, the Saanich Police have used restorative justice for 12 years.

Sitting chair of SD61 calls for united voice in addressing ‘‘chronic underfunding’ of schoolsDan EbenalNews Staff

Three new trustees could bring a major shift to the Greater Victoria board of education.

“I think the [election result] is going to change the direction of the board,” said current board chair Peg Orcherton.

Ann Whiteaker topped the polls with 20,252 votes. She will be joined by fellow newcomers Rob Paynter (18,926 votes) and Jordan Watters (16,658).

Orcherton (20,083 votes), will be joined by five other incumbents when the new board is sworn in Dec. 1: Deborah Nohr (20,177), Diane McNally (20,057), Elaine Leonard (17,855), Edith Loring-Kuhanga (17,389) and Tom Ferris (16,940).

“What I’d like to see is the board moving in the same direction, focusing on what benefits stu-

dents, but I’m not sure that’s going to happen,” said Orcherton,

She expects the three new trustees will side with three others currently at the table, something she fears will put “the benefit of the teachers’ union before the benefit of the students.”

Orcherton also expects the new balance of power will bring an end to her term as board chair.

“I don’t think that’s going to be in the cards. I think with a new majority will likely shift. We’ll have to see on [Dec. 1].”

Orcherton plans to call on the other trustees to present a united voice to advocate for the proper funding models so students the education they deserve.

“With the chronic underfunding of education, we need to work together with one voice, not fighting amongst ourselves and with stakeholders group, which allows the government to continue to abrogate their responsibilities,” she said.

Bev Horsman just missed out on her bid to become a trustee with 16,351 votes. Nicole Duncan (14,247), John Rizzuti (12,458) and Ruth MacIntosh (12,222) also fell short of gaining a spot on the nine-member board.

OUR VIEW

Restorative justice works

A simple step back to reflect on the federal Conservatives’ push for harsher punishments and longer sentences in the criminal justice system is beneficial.

First, it doesn’t take long to find evidence that harsher sentencing does little, if anything,

to curtail crime. The deterrent of years in prison isn’t typically contemplated by most who find themselves churning

in a life of cyclical crime.Second, the average federal prisoner in

Canada costs upwards of $117,000 to house each year. B.C. taxpayers each shell out $51 per year to house pre-trial and convicted prisoners in B.C. correctional facilities, accounting for a budget of $227.7-million (2013 numbers).

So, prisons aren’t working the vast majority of situations. Where to turn? Enter restorative justice, a process that humanizes victim, perpetrator and police officers. Restorative justice is relatively new, though the Saanich Police Department has been accessing the service through the John Howard Society of Victoria for the past 12 years.

As mentioned in our Page A1 story, victims often find solace in knowing their perpetrator has come to understand the impact of their crime, while criminals can have epiphanies that help them chart a productive course in future.

Police, too, find the process beneficial for understanding the mindset behind crime, and officers are able to build personal connections with those that usually live on the other side of the law.

Greater Victoria is fortunate to have several non-profit organizations involved in restorative justice initiatives. Google it and consider getting involved or donating to the cause today. Crime prevention is all about building community, and restorative justice is a great place to begin.

Don’t make endowment a guessing game

It’s become a cliché to say that out of crisis comes opportunity. But there’s no denying that when faced with crises, we have choices. The opportunity depends on what we decide to do.

What choices will we make when confronted with the fact that 2014 will likely be the hottest year on record? According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, global land and sea temperatures up to September’s end tie this year with 1998 as the warmest since record keeping began in 1880.

The world’s warmest 10 years have all been since 1998, and last year carbon dioxide levels rose by the highest amount in 30 years.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Fifth Assessment Synthesis Report, released Nov. 2, summarizes three reports released over the past year on the physical science; impacts, adaptation and vulnerability; and mitigation. It offers a stark choice: Unless we quickly curtail our fossil fuel dependence, we face “further warming and long-lasting changes in all components of the climate system, increasing the likelihood of severe, pervasive and irreversible impacts for people and ecosystems.”

As a broadcaster, I’ve interviewed

hundreds of scientists over the years, but I’ve never heard so many speak so forcefully and urgently as climatologists today. It’s a measure of the seriousness of the crisis.

What choices will we make? Will politicians close their eyes while fossil fuel industry executives

shovel money at them and enlist propagandists to spread misinformation and lies? Will we listen to those who, in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence, continue to say the global warming they once claimed never existed stopped 18 years ago, or that human activity doesn’t contribute to climate change?

Or will we heed scientists from around the world who offer

evidence that we still have time to do something about this very real crisis – and that confronting the challenge presents more opportunities than pitfalls?

Believing our only choice is between a strong economy and a healthy environment is absurd.

Yet that’s the false option many political leaders and fossil fuel industry proponents present. Never mind the insanity of thinking we can survive and be healthy if we destroy the natural systems on which we depend; research shows taking measured steps to address global warming would have few negative

economic effects and would offer numerous benefits. Failing to act would be disastrous for the economy and environment.

Energy conservation and clean fuels offer the greatest opportunities. Conserving energy makes precious, non-renewable resources last longer, reduces pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, saves consumers money and offers many economic benefits.

More than 100,000 Canadians are directly employed in improving energy efficiency, with total wages estimated at $8.27 billion for 2014.

The fast-growing clean-energy and clean-technology sectors offer similar benefits. Improved performance and cost reductions make large-scale deployment for many clean-energy technologies increasingly feasible. By focusing on fossil fuels, Canada is clearly missing out. Worldwide spending on clean energy last year was $207 billion. Canada spent $6.5 billion — a start, but we could do much better.

People around the world want leadership from elected representatives on climate change and pollution. Business leaders are getting on board. Will we take advantage of the numerous benefits of energy conservation and clean energy or remain stuck in the old way of just blindly burning our way through?

The choice is clear.

We must clean up our act

Author connects history of sustainability with modern ecological capitalism Travis Paterson News staff

Jeremy Caradonna’s already busy life has jerked forward at a rate few could survive.

The fast-talking Fernwoodite (who grows food, not grass) is an adjunct associate professor in environmental sciences at the Uni-versity of Victoria who recently released the book, Sustainability: A History, through Oxford Univer-sity Press.

He’ll speak tonight (Nov. 21) at the Belfry Theatre, connecting topics from the book to move-ments in Greater Victoria.

“The idea of the book is to con-nect the past, present and future

of sustainability,” said Caradonna, a trained historian who grew up in Seattle and completed a PhD at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland before moving to Victo-ria.

“Sustainability as a concept didn’t show up in the 1980s, which a lot of people believe, it showed up in 1700s lit-erature as a reaction to

industrialization.”Susta inabi l i ty

has already sold 2,000 copies and is well received in the academic community. It was recently included in Atlantic Magazine and Oxford believes it will be a non-fiction best-seller.

Caradonna crafted the book with Oxford while hold-ing down a packed sched-ule as a hands-on father to daughters three and five, a fly-in associate professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and, as a co-owner of Share Organics local food

delivery com-pany with wife Hannah, a prac-tising pyscho-therapist.

“What’s fas-cinating about sustainability is talked about by political par-ties, such as the U.K., without being attached to anyone,” he said.

On a histori-cal level, Sus-tainability car-ries a heavy

theme of re-examination, pulling out past academics, philosophers and ecological economists from the last three centuries.

Many of them are well known for other work, such as John Stu-art Mill, the 19th century British philosopher and economist, but not for theories about sustainabil-ity and ecological values in capi-talism.

“The book charts the reaction to industrialization over the last two centuries. Aspects of sustain-

ability were there all along but on the fringe. Stuart Mill, for example, also talked about sustainability but was appropriated by neo-clas-sical philosophers for his other ideas.”

At the highest levels, Sustain-ability is about qualitative capital-ism versus quantitative. Econo-mist Simon Kuznets’ work is cred-ited as forming the Gross National Product.

But he said bigger is not better, that the GDP doesn’t measure the ability to live sustainably, Cara-donna said.

“Constant growth is not solving the world’s problems. The Exxon Valdez oil spill of 1989 boosted the U.S. economy by $2 billion in clean up efforts and the 2010 Gulf spill must be near or have surpassed that by now. Sadly, these contrib-ute to the GDP, a wrongly used number.”

Tonight’s lecture is part of Fern-wood NRG’s Fernwood Univer-sity series, 7 p.m. at the Belfry. Entrance is free, and Caradonna will be selling the book. The book is also available at jeremycara-donna.com through amazon.com.

Grade school educator Tiffany Poirier spoke about “big questions” at the 2013 TEDxVictoria event, along with the importance of investigating what we don’t know, no matter our age.

Local inspire, share stories at TEDx Victoria

Eighteen speakers, artists and per-formers will overwhelm Greater Vic-toria with fresh ideas all in the name of the “Pursuit of Knowledge” this weekend.

This year’s TEDxVictoria event on Nov. 22 promises to be the most intense showcase yet of visionaries, scientists, acclaimed TED Fellows and renowned artists.

Jeff Hopkins will talk about radi-cal education, Garry Gray will speak about research ethics and Colin Gold-blatt will discuss life on exoplanets (yes, exoplanets). Cameron McCro-dan will bring a neuro-optometrist’s view on vision problems; Bianca Bodley will discuss her nature-built structures. Ashli Akins will weave a tale about textile revitalization in the Peruvian Quechua communities. Asha de Vos will strut her TED Senior Fellow knowledge on blue whales. Singer Adam Kittredge will share his new project from Jets Overhead. The Cause & Effect Juggling Troupe will shock with their blend of acrobat-ics and juggling. And that’s just the beginning.

“To me, every talk is a possibility

— a window into a new world,” says Genevieve von Petzinger, TEDxVicto-ria speaker curator.

“I love having the chance to learn about something that fascinates me as well as an opportunity to have my mind opened to a new perspective. You can’t replicate that energy in the room when an idea is heard for the first time.”

The McPherson Mezzanine will be turned into the Conversation Space, a lounge built for the free flow of ideas. Keep an eye out for the Royal Roads University Soap Box Sessions and speakers and performers will be available in the Conversation Space for those interested in pursuing more knowledge. This year, tickets also include access to a specialsecond venue, The Active Space, filled with interactive and engaging art projects, live music and performances, all at Atomique HQ (1501 Douglas Street).

TEDx Victoria runs 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets run between $80 and $120.

Safety Tip:Even if you make the sensible choice and install winter tires on your vehicle, it’s just as important that your tires are in good condition, are properly

infl ated and have a minimum tread depth of 3.5 mm.

Question of the WeekBob McHugh offers tips this week about buying 2014 model year vehicles. Do you plan to take advantage of the end-of-year bargains? If so, tell us what you bought and how much you paid.

Good time to make a deal on 2014 modelsIf price is more important than a specific colour and you can compromise on content, there are some good deals out there on brand new 2014 model year vehicles. While most auto makers have had a successful sales year, it’s clear-out time on remaining 2014 models and the push is on to achieve or exceed those end-of-year sales goals. Before we jump into vehicles, a couple of consumer tips that will help make you a savvy new vehicle bargain hunter: If you plan to finance your vehicle purchase, it’s best to first check on loan (or line of credit) interest rates offered by your bank or credit union. An automaker “cash credit” option may be a better choice than low or even “0%” financing, if the informational APR (annual percentage rate) calculation is higher than the interest rate offered by your financial institution. The devil is in the details (as they say) when it comes to end of model year clear-out offers. Not only may that great offer be restricted to a specific model, it may only be for a specific trim level. It’s usually a limited time offer and there may be regional restrictions and/or local availability issues. So, here are some good 2014 model year vehicle choices with attractive (limited time) special offer pricing: Small Cars: Toyota is offering $1,500 to $2,500 off the list price of a Matrix. It’s the last

production year for this generation Matrix, a super reliable 5-door compact hatchback based on the Corolla. Discounted prices start at $16,395, but my pick would be a nicely outfitted Touring edition ($19,710 – including a $2,500 discount) with lots the convenience and power features.A $4,635 discount is offered on the Hyundai Elantra L, which drops the price of this stylish compact sedan to an amazing $12,995. Elantra is also a good reliable car, but this is the base edition with a manual transmission. The list price for the 2015 version of Elantra L has also been reduced to $15,999.

Minivans: The top selling and seeming perpetually discounted

Dodge Grand Caravan simply can’t be ignored in this category and the special offers come with a choice of two option packages. The list price is slashed by $8,100 with a Canadian Value Package and it sells for $19,995. With an Ultimate Family Package its discounted price is $27,888, which is a $10,330 saving. Selected editions of the Kia Sedona ($28,695 to $40,095) may also be a good buy. The cash discount can be as high as $7,000 or you can get $6,000 price cut plus 2.99 per cent financing.

Wagon/Utility: Trendy exterior styling separates the Ford Flex from its people-mover

competitors and right now, you can get up to $6,000 in rebates, plus an additional $1,000 off for qualified customers, off selected new 2014 models. There’s a practical side to its design as the Flex can provide seating for seven and still has 566 litres (20 cu ft) of cargo space in the back. List prices range from $24,499 to $38,399. Introduced in 2013, the Encore is a utility vehicle with modest external proportions and a small fuel-efficient four cylinder engine, but it’s still a quiet and comfortable riding Buick. The clear-out offer on select 2014 models is “0%” financing for up to 84 months or a $2,000 cash credit. List prices for the Encore are $27,835 to $36,895.

Sporty Cars: In addition to great looking return-to-roots styling, the Chevrolet Camaro has a sophisticated rear-drive chassis, powerful engine choices and it’s loaded with advanced technology engineering. A $4,500 cash credit is offered on the base 1LS trim level version or you can get “0%” financing for up to 84 months. Camaro list prices for MY2014 range from $28,495 to $77,400.Hyundai has slashed $7,000 off the 2014 list price for its Veloster Turbo with a manual transmission and $3,500 of the automatic version. The turbo engine gives the compact Veloster a much needed power boost to match its edgy, go-faster sporty styling.

It’s all about gaining traction for Subaru, not just on the pavement but also in terms of sales. For Subaru, traction and sales are related. The Okanagan was chosen for the wonderful twisting roads through wine country but also snow-on-demand at Big White Ski Resort and the setting was perfect.

InsideThe Okanagan is one of those spots that is defined by summer; it’s all about the hot, dry lakeside vaca-tion. But after three days, in and around Kelowna, experiencing the first blast of arctic air, the place is just as magical at this time of year. Stories of the wine pickers getting ready for the ice-wine harvest makes it as appealing and delicious as ever. The Impreza had a similar one-dimensional attitude before this new model arrived. Yes, it is one of the most practical designs, with big doors that make getting in and out a breeze, the huge windows make out-ward visibility impressive but the car lacked sophisti-

cation. For 2015 Subaru has done a good job of remedy-ing the situation. The radio head unit now looks like a polished, integrated feature, replacing what looked like an afterthought. There is a standard 6.2-inch unit or a larger 7-inch model for cars equipped with navigation. A backup camera is now stan-dard equipment along with Bluetooth connectivity and heated seats are standard on all but the base model.

DriveDriving over ice covered roads on the way to Big White Ski Resort and then getting to push the Impreza as hard as it would allow on a snow covered handling course, gives a great sense of confidence in the cars AWD system. For ultimate bite, a good set of winter tires along with the AWD system is impressive. The 148hp 2.0L 4-cylinder engine is carried over from the last car but now it is a Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (PZEV), and the Environmental Protection Agency in the United States claims it is the “cleanest gas car on the market”, helping to reduce smog-forming pollutants.

Other changes include a re-worked suspension and steering. The springs and dampening have been ad-justed to reduce bouncing over big bumps and the steering ratio is quicker. This along with the much quieter interior makes this a good cruising car but the steering lacks feedback and under hard cornering, the car tends to under steer.

VerdictThe continuously variable transmission (CVT) now has a thicker casing for quieter operation and it now features pre-set steps to help mimic a convention-al automatic. And manual transmission owners will be pleased to know that all trim levels can be equipped with a stick, but it is only a 5-speed. On the top two trim levels the Impreza can

be equipped with EyeSight, Subaru’s collision mitiga-tion system that can detect objects and pedestrians and will brake the car to a stop if the drive takes no action. This has proven to be popular with drivers and is something typically found in more expensive cars. What Subaru has not changed is the price. Start-ing at $19,995 and topping out at $30,295, there is a trim and price for many Canadian buyers. The added backup camera, improved interior and the bonus of a PZEV engine is all just an added benefit that should help

An electric luxury car designed to avert range anxiety

By Alexandra Straub

Honda has had a big year. Not only did it bring back the popular VFR800F (which I’ll get to in a bit), they released some all-new products. But the fun isn’t stopping there. With more motorcycles on the way for 2015, I thought now would be a good time to look back at some great bikes I rode in 2014.Besides, we might be deep into fall – with the accompanying frigid temperatures – but on sunny days, the roads aren’t without motorcycles. That’s definitely a warming thought.

CBR650FDon’t let the “CBR” designation - followed by the 650 – intimidate you. This all-new middleweight bike has the sporty flair that you’re used to but with a twist. With a curb weight of 211kg (465 lbs.) and a seat height is 810mm (31.8-inches), complete with a narrow middle profile, it allows a range of riders to feel comfortable atop its seat. What I really liked about this bike is that yes, you have the sport bike styling, but without the wrist and backache that can sometimes be experienced. The ergonomics are more upright so I was comfortable for much longer when I decided to go for an extended ride.Honda mentions that the development team included many engineers in their 20s.That’s a good thing, considering they want to attract a younger customer with the CBR650F.Furthermore, engineers decided early on that chasing peak power at redline was off their agenda. Strong acceleration from a standing start, low/mid range torque and mid-gear roll-on throttle response were targeted as the essential elements.Speaking of which, it’s powered by a liq-uid-cooled, 4-stroke, DOHC, inline-4 engine. It comes in great colours like Sword Silver Metallic, and my test bike, which happened to be the eye-catching Candy Tahitian BlueThe CBR650F has an MSRP of $8,999.

VFR800FThe wait is over and 2014 saw the re-intro-duction of the VFR800F.The legendary motorcycle is completely updated with a modern look, a brand new telescopic fork, Pro-arm swingarm, wheels and bodywork. Not to mention, there’s an adjustable seat height, standard-fit Traction Control System, ABS, heated grips and Honda’s unique new self-cancelling turn signals. In the process, it sheds 10kg from the previ-ous model, and has an engine re-tuned for greater low and mid-range torque.

The V4 engine configuration, which powers this sport-touring machine is unique to Honda and dates back four decades. The 782cc, liquid-cooled, DOHC 90° V4-VTEC engine allows for some great low-end power, but rev it higher and you dig into the VTEC, which will really put a smile on your face.Much like the VTEC in Honda vehicles, VTEC valve timing still operates one pair of inlet/exhaust valves per cylinder at low rpm, and then switches to four as revs rise but the transition is now seamless. The seat is height adjustable (789mm/31-inches or 809mm/31.8-inches) using the tool provided and it weighs in at 239kg (527 lbs.) It’s not a svelte bike by any stretch, so urban riding wasn’t my favourite. But on the open road, it is just a treat. It has an MSRP of $13,499.

NC750XAAh, the NC750XA. A bike I’ve been dying to get on since the NC700s came out two years ago. It’s the more adventurous of two NC models (the S and X), with a taller ride height (830mm/32.6-inches in comparison to 790mm/31.1-inches) and a more upright seating position. This “different” breed of bike isn’t the high redlining sort Honda riders might be used to. It’s ideal for urban romping or a pleasure cruise. For 2014, an extra 75cc capacity was added to the liquid-cooled, SOHC 8-valve parallel twin- cylinder engine. With its engine mounted low to the ground, it naturally equates to a low centre of gravity and an easy-to-move-around type of riding dynamic. Furthermore, you can get upwards of 400km out of the 14L tank. Not bad.And it get’s better. With the fuel tank under the seat, you have that allows for a handy storage compart-ment in place of where you’d normally put in your gas; one of the coolest features of this bike.It has an MSRP of $8,199.

CB500XAOne member of the CB500 trifecta, the 500XA, is a charming little bike that fulfills the idea of owning an adventure-style bike but one that is more manageable for newer riders in the genre. It has a compact adjust-able windscreen, open riding accommoda-tions and large-capacity fuel tank.It has an MSRP of $6,049.

Leadership Victoria call for nomineesLeadership Victoria is calling

for nominations for its 11th annual Victoria Leadership Awards. The public has the chance to nominate local volunteers who demonstrate outstanding community leadership.

“It’s really about motivating and inspiring others by leading by example,” said Ivan Watson, Victoria Leadership Awards communications director.

“When you honour and celebrate the everyday heroes, you really hold them up as positive role models in our community.”

There are eight categories in

total, five of which are open for nomination from the public.

These five categories are: the University of Victoria Community Leadership Award; Rotary Community Leadership Award; United Way of Greater Victoria Award for Collaboration and Partnership; Vancity Youth

Award; Royal Roads University Leadership Excellence through Coaching and Mentoring Award.

The three awards not open to public nominations are: the Leadership Victoria Lifetime Achievement Award; the Leadership Victoria Alumni Award; the Victoria Foundation Community Leadership Award.

To nominate someone for one of the first five categories, go to leadershipvictoria.ca to fill out a nomination form.

Recipients of the awards will be announced on Feb. 19, 2015 at a ceremony at the Crystal Garden.

A local fish market will be selling thou-sands of pounds of fresh herring Nov. 29 to raise money for Fisher-men Helping Kids with Cancer.

Finest At Sea will have 20,000 lbs. of her-ring for sale for the third year in a row, in support of B.C. Chil-dren’s Hospital. The first year the James Bay business brought in 10,000 lbs. of her-ring, and sold out in the

first five hours of being open. The next year, it doubled the sup-ply and raised around $15,000.

The fish is sold in 20 lbs. bags for $20 and 10 lbs. bags for $15. Cus-tomers are asked to bring their own buck-

ets to take the fish home in.

This year, they hope to attract even more people and raise even more money.

“We want to raise as much money as pos-sible,” said Paul Chad-dock, Finest at Sea vice-

president. “That’s why we’re doing it; and to bring awareness to that specific organization.”

Customers can have their fish frozen, vac-uum-packed or smoked for an extra charge. All of those proceeds also get donated.

Last year, Chaddock said people started lining up at 5:30 a.m. to buy herring, even though they didn’t open until 7 a.m.

“It’s a fish that peo-ple can’t regularly get,” said Robert Fraumeni, owner of Finest at Sea.

Along with the fresh herring, Finest at Sea will also be selling cooked herring from its food truck outside all day. Those proceeds will also go to the char-ity.

The fundraiser started in Richmond

in 2011 with the inspi-ration of a 17-year-old girl’s battle with can-cer.

“[Cancer is] just something that will, if not already, touch all of us throughout our lives, whether it’s a child or a grandpar-ent,” said Chaddock. “We’ve got such an amazing hospital sys-tem here in B.C., it’s something worth fight-ing for.”

The herring sale runs from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., or until sell out at 27 Erie St. in James Bay.

Teamwork. It can be a powerful thing when the people and groups involved in a project or trying to achieve a common goal are all pulling in the same direction.

An initiative launched by Country Grocer, in partnership with the Royal LePage Shelter Foun-dation and Creekmore Coffee, sees these three groups working together to expand the reach of charity dollars provided to women’s shelters and transition houses on Vancouver Island.

The month-long fundraiser combines people’s love of coffee; a distribution method and an opportunity to help fund services for women on the Island. Now until Dec. 13, $3 from every bag of Creek-more’s Coffee Country Roaster blend will be directly shared between 10 facilities in Island communities from Courtenay to Ucluelet to Greater Victoria.

Bill Ethier, president and managing broker for Royal LePage Coast Capital Realty, says provid-ing financial assistance to transition houses is an extension of what agents do on a regular basis.

He describes that by way of offering the his-tory of the Foundation. That organization emerged from a national survey the company undertook with its agents in 1998, when it asked what types of charity or fundraising ideas realtors would be interested in contributing to as a group.

“Homelessness rose to the top and the company began looking at it on a national level,” Ethier says.

What came through in his conversations with agents on Vancouver Island was that the most important aspect of their job is to provide people with a home. Ideally, they hope those homes are filled with love and companionship, but that isn’t always the case, he says.

“If a home isn’t happy, if there’s intimidation or abuse happening, the home isn’t happy anymore.”

The prevalence of family violence and abuse, not just in areas of the world where women are oppressed, but close to home, can be an eye-opener for people not exposed to such issues, Ethier says.

“There is still that lack of respect for women, and the children are the innocent victims in all of this. They’re victims of a power struggle in the home,” he says. “This happens in our own back-yard, not just in other parts of the world.”

Greater Victoria Royal LeP-age agents and staff have worked with area transition houses for the past decade, via the Foundation. Looking at the scope of family violence and abuse, Ethier and other Royal LePage professionals pursued the idea of expand-ing the reach of their ongoing fundraising efforts.

“With the Royal LePage offices themselves being located on the South Island,

we’ve focused on four shelters. With the ability of Country Grocer to come on board, and Creekmore Coffee … we’re going to be able to raise more money as a group,” he says.

“It’s an Island thing, it’s a national thing, it’s not just a Victoria thing.”

Tammy Averill, marketing manager for Country Grocer, says it’s very rare to have three Island orga-nizations come together working for one cause.

“This is a new avenue for community involve-ment for Country Grocer,” she says. The chain had worked with Ethier on a previous unrelated campaign and didn’t hesitate when he asked them to get on board again, Averill says.

Dave Creekmore, whose company has supplied Country Grocer for many years and does a lot of work within its community of Coombs and Parks-ville, is pleased Royal LePage would want to part-ner up with them on a local initiative.

“This is a project that is good for everybody,” he says. “It’s nice to work Island-wide and do things on a grassroots level.”

LOCAL UPDATE

Services available for women in crisisGreater Victoria is serviced by a variety of transition houses and

emergency shelters for women who may be escaping abusive or vio-lent situations.

The Royal LePage Foundation works with four of those organiza-tions: the Cridge Centre for the Family’s Cridge Transition House for Women, Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, Sooke Transition House Society, and Margaret Laurence House, which is operated by the Greater Victoria Women’s Shelter Society.

The Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, founded in 1974, temporarily housed 129 women and 59 children in 2013, and its volunteers answered 2,037 calls to its 24-hour crisis line. Hundreds more women were helped through programs operated or supported by the society. Among those are the Stopping the Violence counsel-ling, Spousal Assault Victim Support program and specialized senior women’s programs.

The Cridge Transition House, formerly Hill House, offers a safe emergency shelter, supportive counselling, connections to commu-nity supports, support designed to meet the needs of children, and provides opportunities to support and be supported by other women experiencing similar situations.

The Sooke Transition House Society, at Annie’s Place, provides emergency shelter for women and children in crisis resulting from family violence. It also offers counselling programs including Stop-ping the Violence, and Children Who Witness Abuse, in Sooke and Port Renfrew.

Saanich cyclistshead to nationalsDon DescoteauBlack Press

It’s near freezing out-side and four teenaged track cyclists dressed in riding spandex are doing their best to keep warm inside a heated training tent.

The group, includ-ing 15-year-old Saanich residents Erik Diertens and Erin Attwell, who compete this week-end at the 2014 Junior National Track Cycling Championships in Burnaby, are on bikes attached to wind train-ers that allow them to ride in place.

At one point, the frigid wind gusting out-side threatens to carry the tents away, leav-ing Diertens and fellow junior rider Riley Pick-rell, 13, to reach up and hang on while continu-ing to ride.

Ah, the joys of win-ter training in Victoria.

While only the most hardy are here on this day, Triple Shot Rac-ing club coach Lister Farrar says the Victo-ria Velodrome Associa-tion’s member clubs have upwards of 60 young riders in various stages of development.

“The next stage for us is to get local com-petition for them,” he says.

Farrar, who was named Cycling B.C.’s Youth Coach of the Year this summer for his work promoting the sport and help-ing train area youth, says some riders make their way up the com-petitive ladder rather quickly, while others are content to ride for exercise and the social aspects of club riding.

Diertens, a member of the ProCity Racing club, and Attwell, who rides for Tripleshot, are among 11 riders from Vancouver Island who are part of Team B.C. competing in Burnaby. Illustrating the youth movement in Greater Victoria, the pair will be among the youngest riders in the under-17 categories.

Others riders from Capital Region clubs who will be compet-ing this weekend (with club listed) include Saanich residents Clara Mackenzie (Local Ride) and Eloi Battista

(Pacific Cycling Cen-tre), Victoria’s Trevor Stothart (Red Truck), Esquimalt’s John Wil-cox (ProCity) and Oak Bay’s Rachel Carey (Vancouver Island Youth Performance Racing Squad).

Former University of Victoria student-ath-lete Laura Brown, who won a silver medal in the team pursuit event at the 2014 UCI Track Cycling World Cham-pionships in Colombia earlier this year, was on hand last weekend to speak at the Greater Victoria Velodrome Association’s annual general meeting with fellow national teamer Gillian Carleton.

She also led a spin class for junior riders and was at the velo-drome Saturday morn-

ing to offer her guid-ance to the young rid-ers. The native of Cal-gary is impressed with the number of teens taking up track riding and other disciplines.

“The more kids on bikes, the better,” she says. “It creates a fun training atmosphere.”

The weekend com-petition, held on the steeply banked track at the Burnaby Velo-drome, will include an omnium. Track cycling’s version of the heptathlon, the omnium is designed to create generalists among developing rac-ers, Farrar says. The weekend also includes events for match sprints, Keirin sprint, team sprints and team pursuit.

Travino on grounds of old Royal Oak schoolTravis PatersonNews staff

The biggest residential development underway in Saanich, the Travino, is about to open the doors to its first building in January.

Once completed, Travino will be a community unto itself on seven acres of former Royal Oak school grounds.

The first phase is two buildings which will be ready for occupancy in January. One is a 30-unit set of condos and the second is a 32-unit complex with 26 for rent and six for sale.

The building offers a mixture of one bedroom suites with a den, two bedroom suites and two bedroom suites with a dens, starting at $289,000, most at around 800 square feet.

However, as the final three phases of Travino will be built over the next four years, the prices of the first building will reflect that, said Ed Geric of Travino development firm Mike Geric Construc-tion.

“We priced it to take into consideration that there’ll be some construction going on, it’s priced competitively. Keep in mind, the first buildings are on a road that’s contained, landscaped, and there will be no direct contact with the other construction.”

The first two penthouses sold fast, $850,000 for the three bedroom, with 1,900 square foot and a 1,000 square-foot balcony, and $600,000 for the smaller, 1,300 square-foot suite with a balcony around 800 square feet.

Mike Geric Construction isn’t new to the area, as its been developing homes in Royal Oak since 1968. Most recently it built two major projects in Royal Oak, the Duval in 2012, a single building condo, and the 45-unit Heatherdale in 2010.

“It’s our biggest project when you combine each phase but we’re not intimidated because we’ve done larger single phases than this before,” Geric said.

“The amenities here are first rate. We have a common area with a gym, library and a theatre that seats up to 50 people that anyone within the srata can book free,” Geric said.

He anticipates the strata will likely arrange a

weekly movie night. There’s also: a community garden area for the

residents, up to 60 plots, which will go on a first-come-first-serve basis; a strata owned 10-passen-ger van which will commute down town in the morning; 10 strata-owned bikes to use free of charge; and a grocery pull cart supplied to every unit by Country Grocer (the nearest grocery store). A long list of green features includes solar assisted hot water heating and air conditioning and a heat pump system in every unit.

There’s secured underground parking and plenty of visitor above and below.

Overseeing the use of the theatre and the other amenities is an onsite caretaker who will live there full time, offering security.

At the heart of the property, once completed, is a pond which will be well landscaped with two bridges crossing to an island and gazebo. A planned natural feature, the pond will actually be

used for storm water retention. “Water will channel to the pond where it will

build up and release slowly, and the gazebo is not just for strata, it has an easement onto it for pub-lic access,” Geric said.

Large green spaces, community areas and walk-ing trails will connect Travino to the surrounding neighbourhood.

Rowing Canada says they will add a new para-rowing cen-ter to the Elk Lake rowing complex as of Jan 2.

In the past, ath-letes trained in their hometowns and were then united multiple times a year at training camps in various locations. But all of that is set to change, said Paul Hawksworth, pro-gram manager for the Canadian para-rowing team.

“This will be the first time operations will be centralized year round in one location.”

Para-rowing is not new in Canada. Rowing clubs across the country have been offering oppor-tunities to athletes with disabilities for decades.

Elsa Lalonde wins a heat at the Elk Lake national championships, Nov. 9.

Welcome to the inaugural edi-tion of Jock Talk, a weekly look at upcoming Saanich sports.

The Saanich Junior Braves are away this weekend, traveling to Camp-bell River tonight (Nov. 21) to take on the Campbell River Storm, before returning to town Saturday to face the Westshore Wolves at the Q Centre in Colwood. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

The Braves wel-come fans for home action at Pearkes Arena Wednesday (Nov. 26), when the team squares off at 7:30 p.m. against the Oceans-ide Generals. It will be a good warm-up for the Braves’ Nov. 28 tilt versus cross-town rivals the Victoria Cougars, 7:30 p.m. at Pearkes.

Saanich Braves Midget AA hockey team battles the Nanaimo Clippers AAA squad Sunday Nov. 23 at Pearkes Rec Centre – come cheer on the home team at 4 p.m. on the Gold Rink.

Following this week’s road trip to Saskatchewan, the UVic Vikes basketball teams return home to McKinnon Gym next weekend to

face the Alberta Golden Bears & Pandas. Women’s action gets under way at 6 p.m. Nov. 28, fol-

lowed by the men at 8 p.m. Game time starts an hour earlier Nov. 29.

UVic’s men’s rugby squad is home at Wal-lace Field this Saturday against the Vancou-ver Rowers; the game begins at 2:30 p.m. The Velox Valkyries and Vikes premier women’s sides are playing an exhibition match at Velox on Saturday, starting at 11:30 a.m. On Sunday

Velox’s U18 boys are in the B.C. Plate Final in Burnaby, and the U16 boys host a B.C. semifinal against Capilano at noon.

Camosun Chargers women’s volleyball team squares off against the Capilano Blues at 6 p.m. Friday at PISE, with the men’s teams at 8 p.m. The teams repeat with Saturday matinee games at 1 and 3 p.m. respec-tively.

In soccer action, Saanich Fusion U18 boys gold visits Cowichan Valley U17 while Saa-nich’s U17s host Cowichan’s U18s. On the girls side Sunday, the Gold schedule has Saanich Fusion U17 visiting Juan de Fuca

U18, Prospect Lake U18 hosting Cowichan Valley U18 at Layritz and Lake Hill U17 hosting Bays United U18 at Reynolds.

It’s a slow weekend for high school sports, as several teams head out of town for champi-onships. St. Michael’s Univer-sity School celebrates a day of hoops Saturday. Following middle school games earlier in the day, SMUS senior girls play an alumni game at 3 p.m., fol-lowed by the senior boys versus alumni at 4:30 p.m.

And lastly, the gridiron is hot this weekend as the Mount Douglas Rams seek a trip to their fourth straight B.C. AAA Subway Bowl. The Rams host Kelowna today (Nov. 21) at Westhills, 1 p.m. kickoff. The winner earns a spot in the semifinals, Nov. 29 at UBC.

Meanwhile it’s been a long test for the league-less Victoria Ren-egades junior bantam football team. The ’Gades qualified for the provincial playoffs despite being barred from the Island Co-Operative league earlier this year. They’ll host the Abbotsford Falcons, 5:30 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 22) at Westhills.
