DETECT BREAST CANCER EARLY

BY NORA HESTON TARTE

One in eight women in the Unit-ed States will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some

point in their life, and in 2016 an estimated 307,660 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in U.S. women (according to BreastCancer.org). In many cases, pre-venting breast cancer isn’t possible, how-ever, early detection is your best defense. “Early detection is the best weapon in the fight against breast cancer,” says Pris-cilla Wong, MD, at St. Joseph’s Women’s Imaging Center in Stockton. “Breast can-cer can often be treated successfully when detected early.” For many women, monthly self-exams are one way to detect breast cancer. By completing them on a regular basis, it be-comes easier to notice when something feels different or off. Annual physical ex-aminations by a doctor are also a good way to detect breast cancer early, especially for average-risk patients under the age of 40. However, mammograms remain the best

bet for a reliable early diagnosis of breast cancer for women over 40. “A mammogram can find breast cancer before it starts causing symptoms, so wom-en should never wait until they suspect symptoms of cancer before talking to their doctor,” Dr. Wong says. Mammograms have been known to find cancerous tissue up to three years before it can be physically felt. That’s why the American Cancer Society recommends annual mammography screening for all healthy women beginning at age 40. How-ever, if you are at higher risk for developing breast cancer (likely because of personal medical history, a family history of breast cancer, genetic factors, or a physical attri-bute such as dense breast tissue or obesi-ty), start earlier. “A mammogram remains the gold stan-dard for breast cancer detection,” Dr. Wong says. “It is the best way of detecting small cancers even before they can be felt or start to cause symptoms.”

Mammograms work because they find breast cancer before it has spread outside of the breast or grown large in size (size and spread are two of the main factors used in predicting prognosis). The proof is in the numbers. Since 1990, mammograms have helped cut the mortali-ty rate by nearly one-third, and 40 percent of the years saved by mammography were for women in their 40s. Five out of every 1,000 women who get a mammogram are diagnosed with breast cancer as a result.
