Transcript of s Work: Fair Hiring Employer Summit · Supervisor Keith arson -District 5 Fall 2017 Newsletter...
Supervisor Carson convened the Let’s Work Summit to educate employers
about the benefits of fair hiring, and adopting policies that reduce barriers to
employment for people with conviction histories. Did you know that
employment is the number one way to
reduce reoffending? Helping people
get jobs increases public safety and
makes our communities stronger.
At the summit, we heard from legal
experts at Root & Rebound, a panel of people
with lived experience turned social justice
activists, and a panel of employers with great
hiring policies. Over 100 people were present to
learn how to make their organizations more inclusive.
“Hello District 5. We’ve had a wonderful fall in my office, with many opportunities to get out into the community and meet you! Take a minute to read about our work.
If there’s anything else I can do for you, don’t hesitate to reach out. Serving you is my privilege.”
Let’s Work: Fair Hiring Employer Summit / September
The employer panel featured Road Twenty-Two, Uber, Red Bay Coffee, and Rubicon Programs.
The lived experience panel included Asian Prisoner Support Committee, Legal Services for
Prisoners with Children, and Building Opportunities for Self Sufficiency.
Supervisor Carson is currently the President of the California State
Association of Counties (CSAC), and he invited CSAC’s staff for a visit. It was
important to Supervisor Carson to show our strengths and our challenges. He
made the theme of the visit “Homelessness in Alameda County.” CSAC met
with staff from the County and cities to learn
about our efforts to combat homelessness.
They went on a bus tour to see
encampments and meet with people
experiencing homelessness. It’s important for people who work in the capital to
see this dire issue — and to see some solutions in action. The trip included visits to
Roots Community Health Center and the Henry Robinson Center, with a
presentation from Bay Area Community Services (BACS). Housing is one of the
most important issues we face and must be at the forefront of everything we do.
Supervisor Carson oversees Alameda County’s
Fifth District, which includes Albany, Berkeley,
Emeryville, Piedmont, and portions of Oakland.

Early Child Care & Education Initiative/ November
In November, we
hosted a listening
session about a
proposed ballot
initiative that would
create funds to
increase access to
quality child care and early education, as well as
increase pay for child care providers.
This proposal is part of Alameda County’s Child Care &
Early Education Crisis Solution, which addresses the fact
that thousands of Alameda County children are unable
to access such care. This initiative is important because
research has shown that the first five years of a child’s
brain development are a critical period of growth.
