“Choosing not to read Choosing not to read is never discussed. It is never discussed. It is simply not an is simply not an option…I want my option…I want my students to know that students to know that I see each of them as I see each of them as a reader.”a reader.”

Thematic Paired Reading

Page 29: S uccessful  T esters  A re  A cademic  R eaders

Objective: Follow current candidates in regards to campaign platforms / promises.After the elections, evaluate winner positions

and predict effects of those positions on local, federal, global economies / societies

ELECTIONS and THEIR AFTERMATHELECTIONS and THEIR AFTERMATH

Page 30: S uccessful  T esters  A re  A cademic  R eaders

FALL SEMESTER:•Students are required to follow the Presidential campaigns

and any other positions, from local to federal, that are up for election or re-election this year.

•Students will read current periodicals and internet news sites, listen to local / national / international television news reports, noting the policies and promises of the

candidates (defense, space exploration, economics, poverty, education, environment, oil drilling, etc.)

•Students will be required to take notes from TV, magazines, internet news sites, etc.

•Notes will be turned in periodically over the course of the fall semester, ie. “current events.”

Page 31: S uccessful  T esters  A re  A cademic  R eaders

SPRING SEMESTER (after STAAR):

•Students will be divided into groups of 2-3.

•Students will choose one of the positions / policies of the winning candidates.

•Students will take the vision or idea that they heard during the campaign and extrapolate it from where we are now, predicting how things might change locally, federally, globally under the re-elected or new leadership.

Page 32: S uccessful  T esters  A re  A cademic  R eaders

The project would require students to:

• Become familiar with local and national candidates;

• Read current, authentic materials – magazines, journals, newspapers, internet news sites, and watch the evening news all fall semester;

• Evaluate the objectiveness / bias of the reporting entities (could lead to a great propaganda discussion);

• Discuss speeches, ideas, promises of the candidates.

Page 33: S uccessful  T esters  A re  A cademic  R eaders

TECHNOLOGY:• If you wanted to let kids collaborate across disciplines,

then they could use Google Docs or a Wiki for notes / research.

• If they collaborated between classes / disciplines, presentations could be made together in the

library or cafeteria.

• Presentations could be Power Points, videos, or live.

Page 34: S uccessful  T esters  A re  A cademic  R eaders

EVALUATION:•Rubrics for notes in the Fall and presentation in the spring

•English could teach/grade the writing part; SS could teach / manage the research part, but the discussions could happen in any class. Science could weigh in on the environmental issues.

That way, no one has to do it all.

Page 35: S uccessful  T esters  A re  A cademic  R eaders

LIBRARY CONNECTION:•Collaborate w/ teachers for desired materials and grading

rubric

•Provide website evaluation of most viewed news sites• Team teach discussion - bias / objectivity of news sources

•Create a webpage of links to on-line periodicals and candidate webpages

•Provide print materials: current magazines, newspapers
